CHAPTER 3: Blood at War?

Kagome felt like she was spinning, everything seemed to be shifting around her and she felt sick. She only managed to look up and utter one word before darkness fell around her.

"Father..."

Kagome jolted awake as if waking from a nightmare. Her hand came up to hold her head which was still throbbing. She looked around noticing she was in the woods, everything seemed much brighter than she thought it should be. The babbling of a small stream that flowed just in front of her was nearly deafening. "Where am I? Why am I so thirsty."

She managed to crawl the few feet to the stream and reach her hands down to bring cool water to her mouth to drink. She had barely finished wiping her mouth when she doubled over in pain, Her arms clutching her stomach. Kagome groaned as she heard dirt shuffle behind her. She barely managed to keep her eyes open as she noticed the blue eyed youkai standing nearby watching her. "Make it stop."

"I will not." The youkai's voice was steady and calm.

Kagome's eyes closed in pain as she clenched her teeth, not caring that she was biting her lip.

"Your blood is at war, Kagome. It has been bound up far too long and your mother having spiritual powers will complicate things. It may take a very long time for your blood to become stable." The youkai walked next to Kagome, kneeling to place his hand on her back. "Breath... holding your breath will not help."

Kagome sucked in a breath as she opened her eyes to glare at the youkai, a snarl forming in her throat.

The Youkai smiled as blazing red eyes bore into him. "It would seem your blood is rather unhappy."

Minutes felt like hours, but as time passed the pain seemed to ebb away as if a great force pressed upon it until it was submerged under the surface of a vast ocean. Just as the last of the pain drowned, Kagome felt her whole body pulse and the stream suddenly seemed even noisier.

Kagome leaned forward to take another handful of water only to stop when she looked at her hands. "My nails..." Her nails were like razors, but the pointed claws that extended from her fingertips distracted her for only a moment. The surface of the brook was calm enough for her to gazed at the eyes that greeted back from her own reflection. Bright blue eyes that held the hint of an otherworldly glow.

"You've grown up well." There was a hint of pride in the youkai's voice.

Kagomes stared at her own blue eyes for a moment before a twitch in the reflection caught her attention. "No way..." Kagome's hand reached to the top of her head, hesitantly touching the two soft fluffy black dog ears that stuck out from under her black hair. Kagome jumped to her feet as something next to her shifted. She spun trying to look at it only to freeze as she heard laughter. "What so funny!" Kagome snapped, clenching her hands into fist at her sides, only to flinch at the volume of her own voice. She winced as her own claws dug into the palms of her hands."Ow... This is too weird..."

"I think you are a little old to be chasing your own tale, Daughter."

"You are NOT my fa... wait." Kagome blinked a few times before craning her neck to look over her shoulder. Sure enough, awkwardly interfering with where her skirt started, began a long bushy black tail with straight smooth hair. "No way..."

"You do not remember your true form?"

Kagome arched her back as she figured out how to tuck her tail around the side of her leg to see it better. "I don't." Kagome let out a soft half hearted scoff. "I don't even remember your name. Mom told me you had died in a car accident." Kagome flinched as the youkai walked up to her.

"Your father's name is Sora, and he is very much alive." Sora placed his hand on top of Kagome's head.

Kagome couldn't help but lean forward into the hand. "This is too much. Where have you been? What happened?"

"There was an uprising in the Southern Lands. It was my duty to put it down. Things became complicated beyond measure, so for your own safety I was forced to have your youkai blood and all of your memories sealed away. I hid them inside that pearl in your eye and sent you and your mother to that other world. I knew you would be safe from the threats of this world at least." Sora shifted his hand, letting his thumb brush one of Kagome's soft dog ears. "I'm sorry I was away for so long, too long... but the south has been unstable. There has been no peace there for many years... and in the meantime you have grown as a human... I've missed so much. If I had returned you to my lands before now though, you'd have been killed... I'd have likely been killed as well. Recently though, things have changed and the Southern Inu have returned to power."

Kagome stepped forward, throwing her arms around him and tucking her face into the soft Kimono he wore. "So I'm an Inu-hanyou?" Kagome asked, her voice muffled by the kimono she had her face pressed into.

"Yes of course. Would you prefer to have been a fox?" Sora laughed. "Now come I wish to see your mother."

Kagome took a step back. "Wait... I umm... I want to see someone else first." Kagome shifted as she looked for her yellow backpack. Spotting it at the base of a tree, she rushed over grabbing it and lifting it onto her back. She paused, shocked at how nearly weightless it felt. "It is so light!" Kagome smiled, moving it up and down, showing off how easy she could lift it as she looked to her father, her tail swishing back and forth. "This is too weird..." Kagome said, glancing down at her own tail that now waged independent of her will.

"And where is this person you wish to see?" Sora asked. "We are exposed, far from allies here... we should not linger."

"In the village near the well. I think you need to meet him." Kagome said, as a small blush came across her face.

"Him... Why would I need to meet him?" Sora's face was suddenly serious. "What has she gone and done?" Sora crossed his arms staring at Kagome as she walked up to him. "Very well, we shall go see this person." Sora turned walking towards the village. "With my luck the child went and found a mate not knowing she was already betrothed..."
