CHAPTER 7: And?
"Your mate's brother helped destroy your family!" Sora growled, his own eyes flashing red for a moment as he battled his anger.
Kagome looked down feeling shaky as faces flashed in her mind. "I, I have, had older brothers" Kagome's ears flattened against her head as tears started to burn in her eyes.
Inuyasha felt her tremble and tightened his arms around her slightly trying to comfort his mate as he glared at the tall youkai who was pacing around them. "This is insane...No way this isn't bullshit." Inuyasha's nose twitched as Kagome's scent continued to shift. "Why is her scent changing all over the place?"
Sora exhaled, regaining his composure. "This is no the time to push her. Her blood isn't settled, she doesn't remember everything yet, but so help me..." Sora refused to meet the male hanyou in the eyes. "Those damn golden eyes bring out the worst in me."
Kagome took a staggered breath as she tucked herself into Inuyasha's embrace before she set her jaw. "Tell me... Please tell me everything."
Sora crossed his arms as he began to slowly pace. "If you can remain calm." With a resentful glance at the red clad hanyou, Sora began. "You may not know this but long ago there was a great war between a tribe of Panther Youkai and the Lord of the West. At great cost, The West forced the Panther Tribe to splinter into several remnants and flee."
"Feh, We've run into some of em... twice." Inuyasha muttered.
"Wait, You, I... We are from The South right?" Kagome questioned.
Sora nodded, uncrossing his arms as he began to gesture with his hands as he continued. "Some of the Panthers fled right into My lands." Sora stole another look at the male before turning away and beginning to pace again. "Their numbers were not many, and it took them a few years, but they managed to gain support from my enemies in the land. The cowards would never openly meet my army in battle. No, instead they used The South as a base to strike at The West."
Inuyasha watched the youkai gesture with his hands as his temper flared. "Kagome's mother is always so calm... so, This is where she gets her temper."
"The Lord of the West, Sesshomaru..." Sora spoke the name and title like it was a bitter taste in his mouth. "...accused me of aiding them. He would not listen to reason. The Bastard..." Sora clinched his teeth and hands.
"That's what I call him." Inuyasha dryly commented, his arms wrapped around Kagome as he breathed in her new scent getting used to the changes. "It isn't that different..."
Sora turned to the two again looking up and down the male hanyou. "You two are at odds?" Sora's rage subsided slightly as his face returned to a somewhat stoic expression. "Next in line to the West... and at odds with the current ruler... perhaps this mutt is not a merit-less find for my Kagome."
"13 years ago the panthers drew in allies from the Eastern Panther and Wolf Tribes and attacked us, while at the same time Sesshomaru marched on us. Your brothers marched a force to delay the West, and I marched an army against the panthers." Sora spoke slowly as he looked at his daughter.
"And?" Kagome whispered.
"We lost on both fronts... Sesshomaru's forces slaughtered those set against him, and the panthers won the eastern front. I made it back to the capital, but with only enough time to take you and your mother and flee. After you and your mother were safe, and Sesshomaru had won his little war with the panthers, I returned."
The air around the group became cold, frost left on the ground in the wake of Sora's every step.
"The Southern Lands are in disorder... every youkai with two friends and a blade is still fighting for power there. I've been the favorite target for those trying to gain power since then, and if I hadn't hidden you... you would have been too. In the last few years, thanks to a low class hanyou by the name Naraku, the Western and Northern wolf tribes have been decimated."
Both Kagome and Inuyasha gritted their teeth, images of every horrid event Naraku put them through dancing quickly through their minds.
"A year ago I took a chance. I paid a dear price pup..." Sora paused a grim smile on his face. With a slow motion he opened the upper part of his Kimono revealing a dark red wound that strikingly contrasted with his pale skin.
"Are... are you alright? " Kagome asked in a hushed whisper.
"As alright as I'll ever be pup. But more importantly, I secured a way forward for our bloodline. I pulled the southern Inu clan back together, and with help of eastern allies I..." Sora tilted his head with a grin. "Reminded the wolves who they used to kneel to." Sora held his breath as he stiffly fixed his Kimono back into place.
"Does... it hurt." Kagome asked.
Pacing away while looking up at the trees that surrounded them, The Lord of the Southern Lands turned walking away from the two hanyous.
"Where are you going?" Kagome called.
Sora smiled as he walked. "To see your mother... while I'm gone see if that western bastard you call your mate can help you remember how to be who you really are. If he fails to keep you safe I'll take it as a sign he is truly not worthy of you." Sora shot a cold glare over his shoulder at Inuyasha.
Kagome stepped away from Inuyasha as she watched her father walking away. "Hey... I said to not insult him!"
Sora turned walking backwards as he spoke. "Then let him train you and I'll see if he has any merits... and have the fool find you something to put on that a whore wouldn't blush to wear." With that Sora turned from them, keeping his slow pace. "She married the brother of the youkai that destroyed my life... Father said daughters were troublesome... The old dog was a prophet."
