Crime Scene Kitchen
Chapter 7, Competition Continued Round 5
Friday Evening, Round Four Wrap Up Party at The Dirty Robber
Penny, Shea and Lisa walked into the Dirty Robber and headed to the backroom. Once they entered the backroom Penny said, "So, I guess the Drug Unit is picking up our bar tab tonight?"
Gen laughed and said, "Penny, you wish my dear. They will buy your team their first round, not flip for your whole bar tab. Although Dr. Rizzoli-Isles did cover the first night's bar tab, but there is no way we would let her do that every night."
"Oh well, it was worth a try." Penny said as Gen gave her a hug and said hello.
"You have been here almost every week so you know it is just one drink." Gen said as they walked over to Jane and Maura's table to say hello.
"Congratulations Team Drug Unit!" Penny said as Jane, Maura, Frost, Susie, Angela and Riley rose to offer hugs and accept her congratulations. The tables had already been merged together so they sat down. Riley was sitting the furthest away from Jane and Maura as possible and Angela was right next to her to make sure she didn't give them any crap. Of course, Frost was sitting next to Susie.
"Thank you, Penny, Shea and Lisa." Riley said as they all sat back down. Riley was trying her best to be civil. She knew what was at stake.
Sergeant Korsak walked in and joined the group sitting down beside Jane. After a few minutes he stood up and said, "I would like to make an announcement. The beer is on the house tonight."
"How did you get the owner to swing that?" Jane asked.
"I'm the new owner." Korsak stated.
"Sweet! We get free drinks from now on at the Robber." Frost said.
"Not quite, Frost, but definitely a reduced rate." Korsak said. "Doc, can you help me choose a selection of wines to have available."
"I would be more than happy too." Maura said as Korsak smiled at her.
"Does that mean the music selections will improve?" Jane asked.
"I am up for suggestions." Korsak told the group.
Pitchers of beer were then delivered to the backroom and a picture of water for Maura.
"Maura sweetie, you're not having wine?" Angela asked.
Maura looked at Jane and Jane said, "Look ma, Maura and I have something to tell you." Gen took out her phone and started filming as Jane continued, "We're going to have a baby."
Angela didn't say a word, she couldn't, the tears were rolling down her cheeks. She was so happy. "I … I'm so happy. So very happy. My girls are going to have a baby."
"Ya ma, we are." Jane said as she gave Maura a quick kiss on the cheek.
"How come I seem to be the last to know?" Angela asked.
"Well, they sorta found out by accident. We hadn't planned to tell anybody until she was in her second trimester." Jane offered as a way of explanation.
They spent another two hours before the party broke up and everyone went home.
Thursday Night, BCU
Everyone had arrived by 5 PM so Sharon started the final round of the competition on time. She thanked everyone for coming and then called Team 3 to the Crime Scene Kitchen. Their 3-minute timer started as soon as they entered the kitchen. After a 2-minute reset Team 5 went in for the last time. Both teams were emotional about this being their last time in the Crime Scene Kitchen. All six teams expressed that they had enjoyed the competition.
What Will We Be Cookin'
Both of the teams had looked very carefully and had found the following clues in the Crime Scene Kitchen: almond flour, toothpicks with shades of pink, flowers, circle templates, isomalt and various baking tools.
Team 3, Homicide
"With the ingredients I spotted, I'm so happy we practiced making macaroons." Jane said as they walked back into their kitchen after viewing the Crime Scene Kitchen.
"So, you're thinking that the clues are from macaroons?" Frost asked.
Maura smiled and added, "Yes, I agree with Jane. I believe we will be baking macaroons tonight."
"Okay, let's get this party started." Frost stated and they did just that. Maura flagged their student leader over and told her that they wanted a macaroon recipe. Maura was handed three recipes and selected one and then ordered their ingredients. As soon as their ingredients arrived, they set out a plan of action and got busy.
Jane was so happy, she loved macaroons and knew she would get to have some after the competition was over, even if she had to sneak one off of the plate before it was judged. Jane wondered how much trouble she would get in from Maura if she were to do that after they finished their baking.
Maura assigned the tasks and they laughed and joked as they made their macaroons. This was the last night of the competition and Jane was determined that win or lose they would have fun. Maura and Frost just went along with her. After all it wasn't interfering with their baking so why not have some fun.
Team 5, Drug Unit
When Angela, Riley and Susie got back to their kitchen she said, "Hey ladies, I believe we will be making macaroons, what do you think?"
"I agree." Susie stated and Riley just nodded in agreement. She didn't say anything just nodded. Angela motioned for their student leader to come over and when Angela informed her that she wanted macaroon recipes the student leader handed her three recipes and Angela selected a recipe and order their needed ingredients.
Things were so serious in their kitchen. Riley was not saying anything just performing whatever task Angela asked her to do. She said nothing, just continued to nod. Angela didn't like it at all. She was used to Riley raising chaos all the time. She was wondering what was going on with her. Angela engaged in a conversation with Susie, she needed the interaction, it was too quiet for her liking.
They finished baking their macaroons and stacked them nicely on their presentation plate. They knew that the presentation of the dessert was part of the overall grade and they wanted to make sure they received as many points as possible. Each of the two remaining teams had won twice so tonight was winner take all.
Judgement Time
The three-hour timer went off for Team 5 and Sharon called time. She asked Team 3 to bring up their dessert.
Team 3, Homicide had made macaroons. Jane carried the plate of macaroons to the judging table. She placed it on the lazy Susan and took a step back to stand with her team. Sharon slowly spun the lazy Susan around to observe the presentation of the macaroons. They looked absolutely beautiful. They all were the same size. She couldn't wait to try one.
She picked up one of the macaroons and bit into it and a huge smile appeared on her face. It tasted so wonderful. She took another one before her assistant picked up the plate and took it to the student judging table, so they could judge them. The students judged the macaroons following the scoresheet as Sharon called up Team 5.
Susie brought up Team 5's plate of macaroons. They were very pleased with their macaroons. Angela pulled a play out of Jane's playbook and had slipped one of their macaroons off of the plate before time was called. She ate it and thought it tasted perfect. Once Susie placed the plate on the lazy Susan, Sharon looked them over and thought they looked great. She picked one up and bit into it. It was delicious. Her assistant took the plate away so the students could judge them.
The students were very meticulous in their judging. They knew the importance of this particular judging, they followed the scoresheet carefully and took their time scoring each of the team's macaroons.
Sharon looked at the crowd and said, "This is going to be a close call. I don't think I should have to say this as I think you all know, but tonight's mystery dessert is macaroons." Everybody laughed including Sharon. She wasn't trying to be funny it was just both teams had made macaroons and it would have been terrible if they both were wrong.
"Both team's macaroons were delicious. I happen to love macaroons. As soon as the students finish scoring the macaroons, I will let you know which team has won this event. I want to take this opportunity to let you know that I have enjoyed hosting this event for you. My students have also enjoyed working with you. Many of them have said that this is the best experience in their academic career." Sharon's assistant walked up with the results.
Sharon nervously looked over the scoresheets and concurred with the students' results. She knew this was going to be close and once again only one-point separated the two teams. She took a few extra minutes to review the scoresheets and make sure that everything was accurate.
Once she finished her review she announced, "Once again only one-point separated the two teams. Both of the macaroons were exceptional. This was a close competition. I am pleased to announce the winner of BPD's Crime Scene Kitchen is Team 3, Homicide. Congratulations! I would like to thank all of the participants for making this a successful event for my students. I have a survey that I would like for all of the participants to complete and return to me by the end of next week. It is part of my students' overall grade so your participation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and this concludes our Crime Scene Kitchen competition. Lt. Booker would like to address you at this time."
Gen stood up and walked up to stand beside Sharon. She started by saying, "Congratulations to Homicide for winning BPD's Crime Scene Kitchen competition. Tomorrow night you are all invited to the Dirty Robber for the final wrap up party. The party will begin at 5:30 in the backroom. I hope to see you all there. Thank you!"
After a few minutes everyone had left and Sharon and Matt turned off the lights and locked up the building. Matt was very happy that he had approved BPD participating in the Crime Scene Kitchen competition. It was because of this competition that he met Sharon who he was now dating.
Friday Night Event Wrap Up Party
Gen made sure to have a 'Congratulations, Team Homicide!' banner hanging up in the backroom of the Dirty Robber. She was excited because she was silently routing for Homicide to win. She liked Angela and Susie but she didn't want Riley to win. She found out quite a few of the other teams were rooting for Homicide also, simply because they didn't want Riley to win.
Most everyone had arrived by 5:30. Korsak had a keg set up in the back of the room. He knew this was the last wrap up party. He was very happy that Team Homicide had won. He had been rooting for them all along.
The room was set up so that all the tables were pulled together. Team 3 and Team 5 were sitting with each other. Before Jane, Maura and Frost had sat down Riley walked up to them. Everyone was hesitant, but Riley simply said, "Congratulations Team Homicide. I enjoyed this competition and I am happy that my team made it to the finals." She then sat down with her team.
Jane turned to Maura and Frost and smiled and said, "That was unexpected maybe there is hope for her after all." Maura and Frost just smiled back at her. For over an hour everyone laughed and joked and enjoyed themselves.
Wednesday before the Final Round
Wednesday morning Riley requested a meeting with Chief Bradford. Penny told Riley, "The Chief can see you at 9 AM on Thursday morning. Will that day and time be okay with you?"
Riley replied, "Yes, thank you. I will be there tomorrow morning at 9 AM." Penny disconnected the call. She wondered why Riley wanted to talk to the Chief again. She knew he wouldn't be too happy when he saw her name on his agenda for the day. That is why she made the appointment for 9 AM instead of 8 AM, at least he would have one nice hour at work before the Riley show began.
Thursday Morning before the Final Round
Riley appeared at Chief Bradford's office precisely at 9 AM for her appointment. She wasn't a fan of what she was about to do, but she knew she needed to do it.
Penny instructed her that she could go in. She opened the door and greeted the Chief. "Thank you for seeing me Chief Bradford." Riley said as the Chief instructed her to have a seat. Riley sat down and then he sat.
"What can I do for you Detective Cooper?" The Chief said curios as to why she was in his office so soon after their last chat.
"Sir, I have been doing a great deal of thinking since we last talked and I would like to request a transfer to another location in BPD while I wait for my assignment orders to come through with the NYPD. Would you grant me a transfer out of Headquarters until my orders come through?"
"I believe you have leave coming." The Chief stepped away and called Penny to have Lisa come into his office. "I am going to have Sergeant Detective Lisa Carter come in for this part of our meeting. She is my aide and assists me in all personnel matters. Are you comfortable with Sgt. Carter participating in our discussion?"
"Yes Chief." Riley replied, she really didn't have a choice this is how the Chief conducted personnel matters and she knew it coming into this meeting. Sgt. Carter entered the room and the Chief asked for her to pull up Det. Cooper's personnel folder and verify how much leave she had on the books. Sgt. Carter did as she was asked and informed the Chief that Det. Cooper had two and a half weeks of leave accrued. The Chief thanked Sgt. Carter and she left the meeting.
"I would rather you take your accrued leave until your orders come in, I am just offering alternatives. I will honor your request. I do have one stipulation though, I would like for you to sit down with Det. and Dr. Rizzoli-Isles and myself and explain why you have been acting the way she had been towards them."
"I accept stipulation and I will submit a leave request to begin Monday morning provided I still have the weekend off after the competition ends." Riley ascertained.
"Yes, you have the weekend off. I would like for this conversation to happen Friday morning, let me check my schedule." The Chief called Penny to confirm that he had an opening Friday morning. "It seems 9 AM Friday is available. You can bring me your signed leave form at that time. Is there anything else you would like to discuss Detective Cooper?"
"No Sir." Riley replied.
"Fine, I will see you Friday morning at 9 AM then." Chief Bradford said as he dismissed Riley. Riley stood and left his office. She went back to her office and pull up a leave form on the computer and printed it out. She filled it out for two weeks and had her immediate supervisor sign it. She didn't explain to her supervisor why she was taking leave and he didn't ask. He just approved it and she went back working on the files she was working on. He knew she had some shit going on and didn't want to get involved in it. He had heard all the things she had done lately and was not pleased with her.
Chief Bradford had Sgt. Carter call Sgt. Korsak and let him know that Det. Rizzoli-Isles would need to be in the Chief's office at 9 AM on Friday but the Chief didn't want Jane to be told until Friday morning as he didn't want her worrying about what was going on. Sgt. Carter also checked in with Susie to make sure Dr. Isles schedule would be cleared. With her being pregnant he didn't want her to be upset either. He knew they would worry enough at 8 AM when they found out they needed to be in his office at 9 AM.
Friday Morning
Jane and Maura were quite surprised when they found out from Korsak that the Chief wanted to see them at 9 AM. They went to his office a few minutes before 9 and the Chief had them have a seat in his office while they waited for the meeting to start. They had no idea why there were called to his office. At 9 AM Lisa knocked and entered with Riley.
Jane and Maura looked at each other. The Chief looked at Riley and said, "Detective Cooper are you ready to speak now?"
"Yes, Chief." Riley responded as he motioned for her to take a seat.
"Okay, go ahead and begin. Sgt Carter and I will stay here and be witnesses to the conversation."
Riley began by saying, "Jane, I was upset with you because you had your brother and partner stop dating me. Once all of you discovered that I was a detective and was then assigned to Homicide our relationship changed."
"Can I interject into this?" Jane asked, she wanted to make a point. Maura was sitting right next to her holding her hand. Jane wouldn't be able to have this conversation with Riley without Maura at her side. Maura was her strength and her rock.
"Sure." Riley said.
"I never treated you differently. I was civil to you when you were assigned to Homicide. I didn't say anything to Frankie or Frost about dating you. I don't and won't tell my brother or partner who to date or not date." Jane said in a very even tone.
"Well, I guess the timing was just weird then because right at that time they both stopped dating me and only talked to me at work about work related material."
"Just for your information and normally I wouldn't share this information as it is none of anybody else's business, but under the circumstances I feel it is necessary. Lt Cavanaugh had ripped them a new one for not foreseeing the fact that you were a drug dealer. He questioned their detective skills. They decided on their own to cut all contact with you outside of work." Jane explained.
"I didn't know that." Riley stated.
"Did you ever try to talk to either one of them instead of just taking it out on me?" Jane asked.
"No, … well yes, neither one would give me the time of day. I asked if I could talk with them and they both said they had nothing to say to me. I didn't push it any further."
"What made you think I said something to them?" Jane questioned.
Riley responded by saying, "I guess the timing was just too close, so I thought you might have said something. They both admire and look up to you."
"Well, as I already stated, it was the conversation with Cavanaugh that shook them up, not me. I treated you just as I would have treated any new detective to the squad. I treated you fairly."
"I now realize that and I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the both of you. I haven't treated you fairly."
"That is nice of you Riley, thank you for your apology which I will accept." Maura stated as she turned to her wife. Jane looked at Maura and said, "Yes, I also accept your apology." Jane and Maura were excused from the meeting and promptly left the Chief's office.
"Thank you! Chief Bradford, I believe I have complied with your stipulation request." Riley told the Chief.
"Yes, Detective Riley you have and Sgt. Carter will process your leave request. I would like for you to turn in your badge and gun to me at the conclusion of your leave or when you accept your position with the NYPD.
End of the Friday Event Wrap Up Party
Before everybody left Riley addressed the group, "I would like to apologize to this group as a whole. I have enjoyed my time with BPD and I realize I have made some mistakes that I have learned valuable lessons from. Today is my last day with BPD as I have accepted a position with NYPD and start in two weeks."
Riley walked over to Jane and Maura and shook their hands before she walked out of the building. Two weeks later she turned her badge and gun into Chief Bradford and boarded a plane to New York to start her new life.
