After Dante left the diner, the twins were granted some free time to 'explore the human realm at their own leisure' as the demon hunter had put it.
Personally she thought the idea itself almost ludicrous but had obliged her brother's whim to find out more about their temporary home. Whether they were allowed to stay in it or not was a n undecided matter.
From what she could gather, Dante wasn't the type to ask for permission from others, but after the last accident involving the twins and their return after Vergil had gone on another humanity antihalation spree only earlier the very same year.
Apparently the humans hadn't been all too happy with demons roaming the streets, taking what they pleased. She didn't quite understand why. In the underworld it was considered a common sport amongst the lower classes.
In retrospect, she assumed that the amount of deaths and all that had something to do with it, considering that Vergil had given the demons free-reign to do what they pleased. How Mundus hadn't gotten involved at the time was beyond her. It was the perfect M.O. for him, as the humans put it.
The fact that Vergil had sought to purge his human from his demon self truly had to be an ordeal she would have revelled in being a fly at. Half-human, half-demon races were rare enough as it was but to actually witness one separating themselves from their two halves…well, wonders never cease.
She already made it a point of interest to herself that if she were to ever meet the elusive Vergil, that she would interrogate him about his knowledge of separating himself into two entities. The weaker and the stronger.
"What do you think they plan on making us do once we really join them?"
Ares's question caught her by such surprise that Aspasia nearly tripped over her own feet. Frowning to herself, she looked behind herself to find her brother hunkered in front of a clothing store, his arms resting on his knees.
To anyone else, especially a human, he looked like nothing more than an above average teenage male that had paused for some window shopping, but she knew what he really was. Under that relaxed demeanour lay a truly fearsome beast, one that with one single word from his sister, would tear anything and anyone apart that stood in their way.
As demonic twins, the two of them shared a level of equal power. At least that's how demon genetics worked for the demonic beings. It was rare for one twin to possess more power than the other, but not all that uncommon. Even siblings were a regular case study for the differences in demonic powers.
When demons mated, or procreated as the humans put it, the stronger parent's DNA would usually determine the abilities the children were believed to be born with, thus even if the one parent were far weaker than the other, their children would possess a chance to rival the stronger parent for a better sense of authority. Thus why demons constantly feared the possibility of their offspring claiming their powers for themselves.
Normally she would have shrugged her brother's question off as his mind simply wondering, but this time she couldn't. As much as she didn't want to admit it, his question was valid in its own way.
She did shrug, however not for the reason she would have preferred doing the action for. "They will probably ask us to hunt our own kind. They are demon hunters after all."
She didn't need to look at her brother to know that he had pushed his bottom lip out in a pout. He was no stranger to violence, in fact, he sometimes welcomed it, but to a naturally born demon, the thought of killing others of their kind simply because they were feared by the lesser of two beings? Now that she could understand, better than he realised.
As a female demon, Aspasia had often been at the receiving end of males that thought too highly of themselves suggesting that if she agreed to bend over for them, they could give her everything she desired: a manor, servants and a child to clutch to her breast whilst the father was never around. Honestly half the time her sole wish was simply for them to leave her alone for at least five minutes.
Her mother often advised that she keep Ares by her side whenever she came into contact with males seeking more than a simple conversation. 'To keep them in line,' her mother had advised. She herself had nearly burst into laughter at the thought of using her younger brother as a guard. Half the time she spent chasing both male and female demons away from him.
She would have been offended by the times he received more attention than her, but to be frank, she found it rather amusing how far some demons were willing to go to gain the attention of a member of the Sanguinem family. One had even claimed pregnancy by Ares when Ares had been far too young to even know what to do with the limb between his legs. He had been the equivalent to a human four year old at the time.
Her mother had only told them how their father had laughed at the claim, saying that if his barely toddler son was able to impregnate a demon strong enough to snap his neck at the time, then he would personally approve the claim and provide for both the demon and child they claimed to carry. The best part of the story? There hadn't been a babe in the womb in the first place.
Some poor idiot had only been told that the Sanguinem family had a male heir. No one had opted to inform said demon of how old the boy had been.
As the two aged, more and more such claims had been made against her brother to the point where when they attended social gatherings, he stuck close to her side the entire time. Not to save her from suitors, but rather to have her save him instead.
At first she had thought the motion ridiculous, but the two of them had quickly learned how to turn the other's presence to their advantage. It was because of this that the two of them had formed a stronger bond as twins, always knowing that no matter what, they would have their twin at their back, ready to fight fang and claw for the other.
It also made choosing a potential mate for one far harder on their parents. If the twin didn't approve the match, they would drive the suitor away for their sibling, using any means necessary. She still remembered the time she had claimed that if her brother left her for someone, then she would have no one's shoulder to weep on when attending human opera nights.
She still remembered the pure horror on their mother's face. To think her daughter claimed to enjoy human music. She ended up receiving a worse scolding for her false claim rather than keeping someone from warming her brother's bed.
"I guess you're right," Ares sighed, pushing himself up by his knees. For some reason she found herself smiling at the sight of her brother standing at his full height. There was just something soothing about seeing him carry himself with an air of pride around him.
He was indeed a proud, high-level demon, but he was always going to be her brother, no matter his status or appearance, and that was what she was most proud of.
She set her hand on top of his head, which earned her a confused arched brow, that she simply returned with a playful grin of her own.
" Let's show them what we're capable of."
