Chapter 1: The Haunted Ship
Two Years. It's been two years since the end of war with the Galra and losing Allura. The universe had finally started to settle into a routine. Shiro was finally dating and stepped down as commander of the Atlas. That was really a temporary thing anyway. Hunk had officially gone to culinary school and brought Shay along with him. They were pretty much inseparable. Pidge had been welcome back at the Garrison but not as a Cadet. None of them were really cadets anymore. No, she was a scientist experimenting with bridging Alien tech with Earth tech. She had already made some incredible discoveries. Lance, well, without Allura he changed a lot. He withdrew from everyone only to appear every year at her memorial. He ran a small farm which mainly grew Juniberry Flowers. In fact he was Earths largest supplier of them; Even larger than Altea itself. Speaking of Altea, Coran had been spending all of his time there of course getting the refugees from Lotor's colony settled and integrated into the citizens that reappeared when the planet did. Yes, it seemed that the universe was finally at peace. There were just a few things left to wrap up.
Keith sighed. He had a long road in front of him. Since Kolavan and Krolia, Keith's Galra mother, had been appointed the representatives of the Galactic Coalition he was named the leader of the Blades of Mamora. It was time for him to transition the Blades into something different, something more. But, The Blades still had a few things to tie up. Sendak still had ships that needed decommissioning. Not only did he enslave the citizens of Earth but, he also took some to experiment on. Sendak's scientists found human woman particularly interesting. Keith's and The Blades current mission: To find the missing one hundred and eight women and forty-five men that had been taken by Sendak's research team. He was on probably the sixth research vessel Keith figured. Hey had recovered less than half of the missing people. They still had a long way to go. Keith often thought if it would ever end.
Cold, dark and silent, just like the other ships. As Keith and his team of Blades walked and scouted the ship they quickly found that this one was abandoned too. Luckily the sentries were still working. That meant air, food and water to the prisoners. There were very few causalities with the missing humans so far. It was a good thing. Though, many of them would not recover for a very long time if at all. There were even some instances where they had to be sedated. Some had even gone mad and some were broken. Keith figured that as long as they were alive, they could be saved in one way or another. He wouldn't give up on them.
Upon reaching the bridge of the cruiser starship, his team immediately started to hack into the ships systems to locate the prisoners upon the ship as well as beginning the sequences to permanently shut down and decommission the ship. Once the prisoners were located Keith sends a team to rescue them. It all seemed like a routine now: board the ship, hack the systems, locate the missing, rescue and shut down. Then they go and decommission the ship by taking it apart. Nothing seemed different until the computer screen suddenly turns red as an alarm sounds. Immediately, Keith's attention went from delegating to the HUD. What's going on?
"Report" he stated
"There seems to be a massive power drain in one small section of the ship. I can't seem to access that area remotely. Nor can I shut down the power. I'm completely cut off." The Blade tech commented while still typing to try to get around any firewalls.
Keith stares at the console and sighs. He narrows his eyes. The screen was locked out. The Blade couldn't access any information having to do with that section of the ship. It'll have to be shut down at the location. He'd have to check it out.
"Where is that located?" Keith asked, pointing to the screen
"It's near one of the science labs in the rear of the ship. I can send you the location to your wrist terminal." The Blade replied. Keith only nodded as his suspicions grew. He looked down at his wrist and brought up the Holomap.
"It doesn't seem that far, I'll go myself. Just continue to shut down the systems one by one. Don't worry about that part until I get back." Keith stated as he began to run in that direction. Something gave him haste and pause at the same time. He felt something strange, different and dangerous was in this ship; but it was also familiar and warm. He had felt this before in his past during a dark time he'd almost rather forget. But it was impossible, this warmth; she had died. He had a bad feeling.
This thought quickened his steps as he approached the bulk head. The lights in the hall flickered as if the power was being siphoned. There weren't even sentries stationed to guard the place. What needed so little security yet was kept separate from the entire ship? For the first time in a long time, chills ran down his spine. Was it him, or was this corridor a lot creepier than the entire ship. He felt like Hunk used to feel in these situations. Was something wrong with him? What was giving off this terrifying feeling? He wasn't one to usually have these sorts of feelings. He tried to shake it off. The feeling faded but was still present, making him more cautious.
Upon checking his location to confirm the coordinates, he lets the rest of The Blades know and proceeds to attempt to open the bulkhead. His time with The Blades of Marmora had taught him a great deal about Galra tech and how to bypass simple systems. When he would be successful he'd be filled with pride and accomplishment; and he wondered if that's how Pidge felt whenever she encountered a difficult problem and was able to solve it. He had a real issue connecting to people still. He had even attempted to date Axca another half Galra like himself. It didn't end well of course, mostly due to his duties with The Blades.
An alarm blares as he presses the enter button. Oops. Did he enter something incorrectly? He tried again and fails again and again. The Alarm sounds and the red flashing lockout lights flash with every failed attempt. Attempt after attempt fails. Finally, he growls in frustration, his Galra lineage coming through. He simply didn't know enough to get through this firewall. He's going to need Pidge.
Keith pulls her up on his video communicator. "Hey, I've got a problem. Any chance you're near my location? I could use your skills."
Pidge pops up on his screen and seemed rather preoccupied. She was typing away but looked up and saw Keith. She smiled a bit mischievously. "Why, can't "hack" it yourself?" she snickered. Keith only sighed and nodded looking a tad embarrassed. He explained the situation to her.
"So, do you think you can get me access?" He asked.
"Not remotely, I'll have to come there. I'm not that far from your location. I can be there in about two Vargas."
"Great, see you then."
"Hey Keith, You ok? You seem kinda creeped out." Pidge looked at him a bit worried.
"Yeah I'm fine. This ship is different from the rest like I said. Just hurry." With that the video communication ended. Keith shivered as what felt like a breeze waft through the corridor. Was it his imagination? He had heard rumors about haunted ships in the quadrant but he never believed them. He didn't believe in that sort of thing. He believed in what he could see in front of him and what he could hear. In that moment he heard a whisper. It sounded like it was right in his ear. He couldn't make out what it said though. It sounded garbled and well, it really freaked him out so he didn't really pay any attention to what was being said. This was uncharacteristic of Keith. He was normally never afraid. The only other time he was afraid like this was when they were all stranded in space on their way to earth. He hated thinking about that situation. It only made his phobia worse at the moment.
"Hurry it up Pidge!" he yelled. Keith pulled out his dagger which immediately transformed into his Blade. Looking around he saw nothing but the same dim and empty hall with the flickering lights. Power drain, that's what it was from; he kept telling himself. It wasn't until a white figure flickering in and out with the lights appeared part way down the hall that Keith finally started to believe in the possibility of ghosts.
"Who are you!? What do you want?" He called out in a battle stance ready to attack if need be. As if responding in kind to him the figure spoke. It sounded though as if it was a reversed echo and like they were talking backwards. He couldn't understand. The figure held out a hand as if reaching out for help to him. This presence felt familiar to him; again with this feeling. Did he know this person? A great sadness flowed into him as the ghost tried to speak once more. Again it was incomprehensible. As if almost in a daze he began to reach out towards the figure.
"Keith?" called a muffled voice. He ignored it. It called to him once more "Keith what are you doing? Snap out of it!" Pidge's voice brought him back. "What are you staring at? There's nothing there."
"I… there…." Keith blinked and shook his head to erase the daze. How long was he in a trance? Pidge stood in front of him her hands on her hips; her hair up in a messy bun. She was letting it grow out. She kept the glasses on even though she didn't need them and she stood a bit taller. He looked up and past her to where the figure should have been standing. There was nothing there. "…nothing. I'm just tired I guess" he finally replied.
"You need to take some time for yourself sometimes you know." Pidge remarked as she approached the sealed bulkhead. "So this is the problem?" Keith nodded only and looked at the bulkhead door then to Pidge.
"Can you figure it out?" He asked.
"Can you use a black hole for time travel? Wait… don't answer that… Of course I can. It's me Keith." Pidge Immediately connects her wrist terminal to the main terminal for the bulkhead door and starts typing on the holographic screen immediately. "How strange" the genius mutters as she keeps working. Eventually, Pidge smirks as the red screens turns green and a loud hissing sound his heard from the bulkhead door. The lights in the corridor suddenly just go out.
"Huh, that's probably due to the power needed to open the door. It's a lot more fortified than these sorts of doors are usually. Keith only said nothing as his focus was targeted on the room on the other side of the door. What they found on the inside not only shocked but disgusted them.
What they found were rows and rows of human sized tubes. They resembled the ones that held the clones of Takeshi Shirogani. Inside these tubes were mostly remains of humans. They held corpses and remnants of not just humans but other races as well. Most of the tubes were unlit. Mostly due to power failure noted Pidge. But there was one that was lit still. It gave off an eerie sky blue light and pulsated gently. It also gave off a slight humming sound.
"Huh, that's strange." Pidge chirped. "This pod is receiving the majority of the power. It's almost like they shut the others down to have the power to keep this one active. I wonder why…" Keith came upon the pod and his eyes widened. It couldn't be. There was no way! His eyes began to tear up slightly. It was her. But she died. How was she here? Next to the tube was a terminal with vital signs; and very much alive!
Chapter end.
