Jaune Arc was confused.

Very Confused.

This was nothing new to Jaune, he got confused quite often. He knew full well that he wasn't the smartest kid in beacon, not even close in fact. He really lacked common sense though. This is the same kid that thought it would be a good idea to bullshit his way into a school designed to teach already trained warriors how to further their abilities, despite the fact that he has zero training, no skills whatsoever, and not even having his Aura unlocked. So...yeah.

But while Jaune Arc may be an idiot, he was not stupid.

...ok maybe he was stupid too.

'Rustle Rustle'

Jaune was awoken, but remained perfectly still and quiet as the foreign body entered his bed. It was obvious what was happening. He was no stranger to having to comfort his younger sisters in the dead of night after they were awoken by a nightmare or decided to watch a scary movie and couldn't sleep. He had little problem sharing a bed in order to make his sisters feel better.

Jaune allowed the body to get comfortable next to him, he even relaxed his grip on the blanket so his sister could wrap herself up. After all movement ceased, Jaune finally allowed himself to relax as he started to drift off peacefully into dreamland.

His snuggle buddy was far from peaceful however. Jaune quickly realized that his sister was trembling quite badly.

"Must've been a pretty bad nightmare", Jaune thought.

Jaune rolled over onto his side and wrapped his sister in a warm comforting embrace, still pretending to be asleep. The trembling quickly slowed down and eventually came to a complete stop. Jaune could practically feel his sisters red cheeks on his chest.

"Must be embarrassed about needing me to comfort her".

With a calm sister and an early day in the morning, Jaune started to quickly return to unconsciousness.

...

...

...wait.

His sisters weren't anywhere near him right now.

He was in Beacon.

...

...

So who was in his bed?

Jaune barley opened his eyes in order to identify the culprit. His whole team was still sleeping peacefully, the body in his bed was quite small so it wasn't Yang, the hair on their head was dark so that ruled out Weiss, and there were no cat ears on the crown of the head so that eliminated Blake. Which only left one option remaining.

His best friend in Beacon, Ruby Rose.

Jaune Arc was confused.

Why would Ruby sneak into team JNPR's room and into his bed despite her sister sleeping in the same room as her? Surely she could offer more comfort than he ever could. Jaune wasn't strong, or fast, or smart, or agile, or anything good really. So why would Ruby seek him out of all people for comfort?

A quick and subtle glance downward revealed that Ruby was still awake, her cheeks blazing red and her arms wrapped around Jaune's torso. Should he talk to her, try to get answers? Or should he just let her peacefully fall asleep next to him?

After a moments debate, Jaune decided the best course of action would be to keep his mouth shut. Ruby was obviously embarrassed and he didn't want to make this situation any worse for the poor girl.

...

Wow she's cute.

Ruby was easily the cutest girl in Beacon and the cutest girl he'd ever seen by a landslide, it wasn't even close. If his sisters heard him say this then they would skin his ass alive so he wisely decided to keep that thought to himself. But her perfect beautiful silver eyes and the way the moon gently reflected it's light onto them was captivating. The blush still present on her cheeks made her look even more beautiful, if such a thing was even possible.

She wasn't as mature as Yang, or as doll like as Weiss, or as Mysterious as Blake, but she really didn't need to be. Because she was perfect. Just looking at her had Jaune's cheeks heating up quite badly.

Jaune made a mistake. He was so captivated by her beauty that he neglected that he was supposed to be pretending to be asleep.

Ruby looked up directly into Jaune's eyes. The standoff couldn't have lasted more than 3 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. Steam quickly erupted from Ruby's ears as she attempted to form words with her gaping mouth. All that came out however were whimpers.

Before Ruby could say anything that would likely wake up the rest of his team, Jaune quickly pulled her closer to his chest to muffle her words. He wanted her to feel safe and comfortable. She obviously climbed into his bed for a reason so he wasn't about to force the poor girl to leave.

He wanted her to stay.

After a few moments, when he was sure Ruby wouldn't wake up his team with her apologies, Jaune relaxed his grip on the girl and spoke to her.

"Nightmare?" Jaune quietly asked.

Ruby's subtle nod was all he needed. Jaune had nightmares too. These days they mostly revolved around him not being able to protect those that he cared about and failing as a huntsman, a leader, and a friend. After years of nightmares, Jaune just got used to them, he knew the life of a huntsman was dangerous, he accepted that risk because he wanted to be a hero.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Whispered Jaune. He never talked about his nightmares to anyone. He never wanted to bother anyone with something as silly as a dumb hallucination while he was sleeping. But maybe Ruby would feel better if she got it off her chest.

After a few seconds, the young huntress spoke up trembling once again. "Grimm." She spoke softly. With that one word, Jaune understood completely. It wasn't too far fetched either. In their line of work, they would be facing Grimm every day, and the possibility of death by Grimm was quite high. "Hundreds of Grimm." She continued. "Me and you f-fighting for our lives." She pulled herself closer to Jaune as if she was afraid he was just an hallucination.

Jaune felt a dampness on his bare chest and quickly realized that his friend was crying. He kept quiet though, not wanting to interrupt her.

"Y-You, pushed me out of the way of a claw m-meant for me." Ruby was now audibly sobbing into her friend. "Y-You...You took the hit instead of me. You saved my life, and I got away." Jaune didn't need to hear anymore to know what happened next. "Y-You didn't."

Jaune hugged Ruby tighter to his chest to assure her that his heart was still beating. His friend was scared and she needed him now. He had to be a fearless leader after all.

"I'm here, I'm not going anywhere." Jaune assured his terrified friend.

"P-Please, d-don't leave me. Don't make me go." Ruby pleaded to her friend.

Jaune maneuvered himself so he was laying eye level with his friend. Her eyes were bloodshot with fat tears pouring down her cheeks. "I won't, I promise." Jaune gently brushed Ruby's hair out of her face and placed a gentle kiss on Ruby's temple. Pulling away and looking the red faced huntress in the eyes he added, "And an Arc never goes back on their word."

All was silent, no words needed to be spoken between the two friends. But for the first time that night, there was no fear in Ruby's eyes. All that remained was a small smile on her lips. "Thank you Jaune, you're a great friend."

Ruby stared deep into Jaune's eyes with hesitation clear on her face, after a moment she slowly started to lean forward.

...no way...was she?

Jaune was not prepared for this, not even close. He had no idea how to do this, he didn't even know where to start. His heart was like a jackhammer in his chest, threatening to explode at any second, his face felt like it was on fire. "What should I do? How should I do it? HELP ME!"

While Jaune was having a mental breakdown and on the verge of passing out, he remembered the wise words of his father that he had never acted upon. "Remember son, all a man needs is confidence." His fathers voice echoed in his head.

For the first time ever, Jaune listened to those words and started to lean forward to the girl.

When their noses bumped he knew there was no going back, not that he wanted to anyway, this was a dream come true for him, he'd had a crush on Ruby for a long time. After one more moment, their lips met. Jaune always imagined how his first kiss would go. He would read stories where a couple would kiss and they would be overcome with lust, but there was very little of that here. All he felt was pure unbridled happiness. The kind of happiness that could last for hours but feel like it was over in one second. As such, Jaune decided to savor every moment of it.

"Mm!" Ruby's face was redder than ever but that didn't stop her from leaning further into his embrace. Their kiss was gentle and clumsy, both of them having zero experience with romance. But she didn't mind one bit, as clumsy as it was, she loved every moment of it.

Both of them remembered that they had to breath and reluctantly pulled away from each other gasping for air. Their cheeks were both blazing red but their smiles wider than ever. Ruby still had tears streaming down her cheeks, but these were no longer the tears that were caused by a terrible nightmare, but rather tears that were caused by being truly happy for the first time since her mother passed.

Jaune decided that it was now or never, if he didn't say it now then he might never work up the nerve to try again. He slowly opened his mouth and spoke.

"I love you."

Ruby's eyes and smile grew impossibly wide, she was beautiful. With less hesitation she leaned forward along with Jaune for another kiss. This time was much less clumsy than the first, both of them quickly falling into a rhythm. Jaune pulled Ruby closer to his chest to embrace the young huntress.

"Mm!" Ruby leaned even deeper into the kiss wanting to feel even closer to the blond knight. Jaune happily allowed this, wanting to savor every single second.

"Hahhh! hahhh!" All good things must come to an end. The two separated and gasping for air, breathing heavily with a red tint still clearly present on both of their cheeks.

Ruby snuggled close to her new lover and for the first time ever, conveyed her feelings to the blond.

"I love you too."

Ruby had no more nightmares that night.

Beep Beep Beep Beep

Jaune hated waking up to an alarm. There was no worse way to start your day then a loud noise blasting into your ear. Team JNPR decided that Ren should be in charge of setting the alarm every night, they didn't need an alarm set for everyone in the room, so they only set one and trusted it to wake everyone up.

Ren reached over and silenced the loud device, earning a tired groan from everyone in the room. Jaune had long since learned that he only had about 30 minutes of peace and quiet in the morning until Nora ate her sugary breakfast and got a sugar rush that lasted all damn day.

Everyone slowly got up and got their morning routines underway. Jaune's morning routine consisted of laying in bed until someone forced him to get up and get dressed. This time it happened to be Nora.

"Wakey Wakey fearless leader, we're gonna do some morning training after breakfast so you better be ready to get whipped into shape!" Nora rocked Jaune back and forth to annoy him enough to get out of bed. It was quite effective actually.

"Alright, alright I'm up, I'm up..." Jaune miserably forced his sore body out of bed only to discover a weight laying on his chest that prevented him from sitting up. "Hm?" "Thats strange, why does my chest feel so heavy?" Removing the blankets from his bare chest he quickly discovered the reason that he was unable to sit up.

"Oh no!"

Jaune had completely forgotten about last night! There Ruby was, clinging to him like a child would hug a stuffed animal, in her adorable pajamas with her hair an absolute mess. "How am I gonna explain this to my team?!"

Ruby groaned on top of the blond, clearly annoyed about the noise and the shaking. "Ugh, five more minutes Yang." Ruby complained while hugging Jaune tighter. Mumbling incoherently in her half asleep state.

"Ruby?" Jaune said with fear.

"Hm?" Ruby prettily fluttered her eyes open as her vision adjusted to the bright lights in the room. "Jaune?" She asked innocently. "What're yo-" another four seconds passed as Ruby's memories started to catch up with her as to the events of the previous night. After coming to terms with what was happening her entire face, up to the tips of her ears flooded with the deepest red he had ever seen.

Flash

Oh dear god no

Nora had taken advantage of the distraction and snapped a picture of the two lovers with their faces mere inches apart. The smile that was plastered over her face was the most soul crushing thing he had ever seen, because he knew full well what Nora would do with that picture.

Ruby blasted towards Nora with semblance enhanced speed that had the side effect of launching Jaune off the other side of the bed. Nora quickly moved the scroll out of the short huntresses reach before she could remove the evidence.

"Nora! It's not what you think I swear! Please delete that picture!" Ruby pleaded on her hands and knees with her cheeks blazing red. "Please! Yang will tease me until I die if you show that to her!"

While Yang would be keen on teasing Ruby about this for the rest of her life. Jaune wouldn't even live to see it if Yang got a hold of that picture. His only saving grace was that Ruby was in his bed and not the other way around. If Yang had discovered Jaune sleeping in Ruby's bed then she would kill first and ask questions never.

The normally stoic Ren had a look of surprise on his face at seeing the situation unfold before him, with Ruby pleading to the ginger girl. Pyrrha had a look of sadness visible on her face, no doubt feeling sorry for Jaune due to what fate he was doomed to meet at the hands of the blond brawler.

Ping

All color drained from both Jaune and Ruby's face as the familiar noise of a message being sent came from Nora's scroll. There was no doubt in their mind about what she had just done.

If there was any doubt, the loud crash that came from across the hall left no room for debate. Jaune only had one chance at surviving. Lucky in order to survive he had to do what he does best. So Jaune quickly got up and hauled ass out of the dorm room, running as fast as his untrained body could carry him. On the plus side, this might just be the best morning workout he ever got. Running for your life would do that to you.

So in the span of 5 hours he managed to get a girlfriend, have his first kiss, sleep with a girl for the first time, unintentionally give someone the worst blackmail on him possible, and summon the wrath of someone who could and would kill him so easily it wasn't even funny. Where did he go wrong?

Jaune Arc was confused.

AN: I was bored and decided to write something. I've never written before so please let me know how I did. This was actually inspired by another story called "Ocean" by "Imyoshi" but I wanted to focus on Ruby because I like her :P

Update: I intend for this to be a one shot but if I get some overwhelming support then I might just add a second chapter. Please let me know.
