Authoress Note: Welcome to Chapter 4 of Always. Thank you to those who have stuck with this story. It really does mean a lot to me and I hope that everything will be falling into place for this story even though it has taken me a while to write for this story. But I kind of figured that it would just be due to the fact that I have kind of lost the muse and it came back and it comes and goes in spurts which is kind of irritating in a way, but oh well. I hope that you enjoy this next chapter. Without further ado Chapter 4 of Always. Enjoy!

Chapter 4

Dorothy looked out the window as the front seat while Steve and Peggy sat together in the back seat. She watched kids scramble out of the street as they passed by.

"I know this neighborhood. I got beat up in that alley...and that vacant lot...and behind that diner." Steve said as he looked out the window letting out a soft breath.

Dorothy shook her head lightly in thought wondering why Steve didn't try to get away from things that caused more trouble.

"Did you have something against running away?" Peggy asked, voicing Dorothy's question that she had been thinking.

"You start running, they'll never let you stop. You stand up, you push back...they can only tell you "no" for so long, right?"

"I know a bit what that's like. To have every door shut in your face. Miss Stark has the same problem." Peggy admitted softly knowing that they were probably the only two women that actually did something to better the world and it was in a male dominant field.

"Who'd shut a door on you? I figure guys would be climbing over each other to hold them open."

"Depends which door you're trying to go through." Dorothy said as she turned a little in the front seat her black hair bouncing slightly as she moved.

"I guess I don't know why a beautiful...agent...why would she want to join the army anyhow? She

could do whatever she wanted." Steve said as he looked at the two of them. "And the sister of Howard Stark…"

Dorothy let out a soft laugh shaking her head thinking of how Howard was so upset that she had joined the army.

"You don't know an awful lot about women, do you?" Peggy questioned her brow raised as she looked at the small man that sat next to her.

"You got me all wrong, Agent Carter. I don't know anything about women. This is probably the longest conversation I've ever had with one."

Peggy laughed just a tiny bit thinking of what Steve was saying.

"I wish I were kidding. Think about it; I don't have any money, so I can't take them to dinner. I'm... kinda short. That doesn't help. Ever. And I don't dance, so that's off the table."

"You must have at least danced."

"Standing on my mom's feet when I was seven. I don't know. Asking a girl to dance seemed so terrifying, and then in the last few years it didn't seem so important. I figure I might as well wait."

"For what?"

Steve shrugged before looking out the window. "The right partner."

The car came to a stop.

"This is it."

Dorothy got out of the car fairly easily and slowly walked towards the doors.

Steve climbed out of the car confused. "Why did we stop here?"

"I love a bargain." Peggy mused with a smile as the three of them walked into the building.

The bell over the door rang.

The antique store owner nodded her head at the three of them. "Lovely weather this morning, isn't it?"

"Yes, but I always carry an umbrella."

"I suppose you can't be too careful."

"Best to be prepared for a shift in the wind."

The code being exchanged, the woman pressed a button under a counter, where a submachine gun was hidden.

Peggy and Dorothy led Steve through a door in the back.

They find a marine guarding a huge metal door. As the door opened the marine salutes.

Steve stepped out onto a raised platform and gaped at what he saw. There is a huge, ultra-modern rebirth lab stretching beneath them. Far larger than the store that was outside. His eyes land on the rebirth device.

Dr. Erskine scurried about in the center of all the prepping.

Steve took a breath taking it all in.

Dorothy moved down towards the ramp towards where her brother was.

Howard turned his head and saw his sister. "Hey you made it."

Dorothy let out a chuckle as he brought her into a hug. "I told you that I would be here."

Howard smiled and saw her turn her attention to project rebirth. "So what do you think?"

"It's big… and something big."

Howard let out a soft chuckle patting her arm. "Go join Agent Carter and I'll see you soon."

Dorothy nodded her head and headed towards Peggy.
