"I am your ancestor, Harry. My name is Ignotus Peverell."
Harry stared at the man that had claimed to be his ancestor incredulously. Why had he come to meet him? Sure, one would want to meet his or her descendants. But, why him?
"What?"
James attempted to clarify it to him, "I know that you would find it disbelieving but he really is your ancestor. He has some important things to discuss with, he says. Well, we shall take our leave for now. We are gonna come back when your talk is over. Bye."
Before Harry could respond, his parents had already disappeared. Sighing, he turned towards the man and asked, "Well, what is it you wanted to talk about?"
Ignotus started, "Well, I have a lot of things to talk about. I would not want to fret from the topic. So, let me get directly to it. Have you ever heard of Deathly Hallows?"
Harry asked intrigued, "Deathly Hallows, what are they?"
"So, you have not. Very well then. The Invisibility Cloak you have is one. It is made by Death."
Harry was of disbelief. He asked puzzled, "'Made by Death?' What does that mean? And wait! How on earth do you know that I have an Invisibility Cloak?"
Ignotus chuckled, "Now, now, do not get impatient. I know about the Invisibility Cloak because I was the one who first got it. And yes, Death is a sentient being if you are thinking of that. Now, onto the story of the Deathly Hallows.
"My two elder brothers, Antioch and Cadmus along with me were on a journey to our hometown after graduating from Hogwarts. Yes, it was founded before our time. We did not know where we were going but we continued anyway. On our way, we reached a river. The other side of it was misty. We crafted a bridge with magic and were halfway crossing the river when a hooded figure stopped us.
It was Death. We had the same reaction as you when we saw it. It said that we had been successful in cheating it. The other side of the river was the land of the dead. The river was the limbo. We would have been the first people to die without dying. We believed it foolishly. It wanted vengeance in reality.
Antioch was combative man. He asked, 'Give me a wand whose power surpasses all others. Let it be known that I have been victorious against thee, Death.' And Death gave him a wand made from a branch of an elder tree.
Cadmus, however, was arrogant and demanded, 'Give me an object that allow me to bring back the ones who have left the mortal plane.' And Death gave him a stone from the riverside.
I asked for an invisibility cloak that hides me from anything, even Death. And Death was bound by his promise to give me his own Invisibility Cloak, the one you have.
We went our separate ways after reaching our hometown. Antioch had a score to settle with his old enemy. They dueled but Antioch easily defeated him and killed him. However, he bragged about it and was murdered in his sleep that night.
Cadmus however went to our old family house and summoned his lover from the dead. However, he did not get what he wished for and committed suicide.
I understood what were Death's true motive then. It was all a trick he played on us. I lived the rest of my life cautiously and hiding from Death. When I was really old, I revealed myself to it and died after giving the cloak to my son. This cloak was passed over generations and now, you are in possession of it."
Harry looked at his ancestor as if he was crazy. The tale was too weird to be true. It sounded so impossible. But, today, many impossible things were happening with him. So maybe, just maybe, it was true. After all, why would this man who was his ancestor lie to him for no apparent reason. He merely nodded.
Ignotus spoke to him in an amused voice, "You do not seem to wrap your head around everything I said, right? I see that you have a lot of questions to ask me."
Harry rambled out, " What the fuck! You mean to say that all of this you said is true. Where are other two? Why are you telling me this? And what did you mean when you said that your brother, Cadmus didn't get what he wanted?"
"Calm down! As for the other two, I do not know where they are exactly. What I do know is that the elder wand changes its ownership if another wizard defeats his previous master."
Harry interrupted him, "Wait a minute! If the elder wand is unbeatable, how come the wizard lose the duel."
Ignotus chuckled, "I had thought you would ask me this. Think about what Antioch actually asked Death. 'Give me a wand whose power surpasses all others.' Try to deduce it yourself."
Harry looked confused before his eyes widened upon understanding, "That-that means-"
"Yes Harry, he said that the wand is more powerful than any other wand. That means that a spell from the elder wand would be stronger than any other wand. However, a duel is not only based on power but also skill. So, it turns out one can actually beat the elder wand."
Harry asked, "B-but, who has it now?" It would be dangerous if it falls in Voldemort's hands.
Ignotus replied, "I myself do not know. Now, onto the Resurrection Stone, you would find it out yourself as well. Think about it."
Harry thought about it for a few moments but did not catch it, "What is it? He did bring back his lover, right? Wait. He did not say that the person had to come back a human. She must have come back as a ghost."
Ignotus spoke with a hint of pride, "Very good Harry, though unlike ghosts who would be trapped here forever, the resurrected people would go back as soon as the owner loses contact with the stone. Next, you asked why I have told you all this."
"Yeah, why? Do you want me to collect them or something?
"It is both yes and no. I want you to secure them. Tom Marvolo Riddle, or Lord Voldemort as he calls himself, must not know or get his hands on any of them."
"Why?"
"Immortality - this is why. Voldemort wants to be immortal. And this is the guaranteed way of immortality. These three are made of Death's power. So, if one is able to absorb their magical energy, they effectively gain power over Death. And there is no known way you can reverse it by taking away the magical energy."
Harry was speechless. Before he realised one thing. Voldemort was still alive. He asked, "Then how is he still alive?"
"He had made horcruxes. The knowledge of immortality through the Deathly Hallows is known to so few people that it can be counted on one hand. The next effective way is through horcruxes where you tear apart a piece of your soul."
"What! But-but wouldn't it make the soul, you know, sort of unstable?"
"It does. You would need to murder someone in cold blood and enjoy it to set up the conditions for creation of a horcrux. However, you can destroy one. I have to go now. Good luck."
He vanished. There was a silence for the next few moments. Harry thought about the things he came to know about. If Voldemort created horcruxes, then that would mean... the diary was a horcrux. It did not seem strange for a person like him to create a horcrux. But what about the tiny Voldemort creature. Was it also a horcrux? But why would he make him one? Maybe accidentally - but such things do not seem to be accidents.
"You have spent a lot of time here, Mr Potter. It is time for you to go back. Bring me the one who thinks himself over me," the last thing he saw was a hooded figure with a scythe.
Scene change
Harry woke up to find himself in the hospital wing. What was he doing here? He was in the Chamber of Secrets, right? Were they rescued? He would think of them late in the morning. He was feeling very sleepy at the moment. He shut his eyes and let sleep take over him not knowing what the future holds.
Next morning
It was quite late when he woke up the next day. He remembered everything that transpired yesterday. It seemed that there was a lot of work to do and questions to get answers.
"Harry, I see you haven woken up," he turned to see Albus Dumbledore standing in the doorway with a smile on his face.
Harry's eye became hard as he remembered that Dumbledore was responsible for sending him to the Dursleys. The Headmaster had a lot of questions to answer.
He said coldly, "You have a lot of questions to answer to, Professor Dumbledore."
And that's it for now. Harry has kinda lost trust and gained some animosity towards Dumbledore. Will he be able to regain Harry's trust? Will he be able to convince him that he was not a bad person? Or is their relationship severed forever?
