AnnaBeth couldn't believe what was going on. They were trapped in the ED where a grenade had just gone off. Kelly had pushed the man from the chair but had suffered a lot of the blast. He was lay unconscious on the ground. She knew Lemon would have been there meeting Jonah but had thankfully changed her plans to visit. AnnaBeth's ears were still ringing and it was taking her a moment to situate herself with her mind racing a million miles an hour. What if Lemon had been there, was Gabby ok, what if they had all been infected by some deadly disease and were all going to die anyway.
"AB" Mills said putting a hand on her arm and looking at the cut on her head "Are you ok?"
"I'm fine" She nodded putting a hand to her head "Really I'm fine"
"Black tag"
Mills looked up at the doctor who had declared Kelly was a black tag. AnnaBeth wasn't even sure she took in the whole argument that broke out between Mills and the Doctor. She felt her heart break.
"I've got him" Jonah said putting a hand on her shoulder "I'll need you two to assist though, can you do that"
AnnaBeth nodded standing up as Peter and Jonah get Kelly onto a stretcher. Mills spoke into his radio updating Chief Boden to the situation.
Jonah handed her a Bag Valve Mask. She took a breath and pretended it was anyone but Kelly as she checked that she was in. Jonah said there had been severe trauma to his chest. She heard talk about blood or a lack of available blood. She just kept counting while Peter helped Jonah.
"AB are you sure you're ok?" Peter asked her again.
"It's just a scratch" She told him.
She honestly thought on this job she would be lost without her partner. Peter was always there for her. He was one of the best friends she had. He had been the first person to really make her feel welcome. She'd met a few other paramedics and she knew she was lucky to have had two amazing partners.
"That's not what I meant" He said handing Jonah a scalpel.
"We've been through worse and come out the other side, right?" She asked trying to be brave.
"Right" He agreed giving her that smile she had grown to love so much.
AnnaBeth had never known Jonah be so silent. It was amazing to see him really at work. He was so professional. She knew he had to be, but it was hard to imagine flirtatious playful Jonah so serious with a life in his hands.
The rest of the day felt like it passed on a blur until Jonah had announced that they were done. It was just a waiting game. Herrmann had announced that the virus was negative so the doors were able to be opened and more doctors and nurses could get in. There had been a fire in the ceiling, more of the team had come inside and she hadn't realised any of it.
"Thank you" She said to Jonah throwing her arms around him.
"Just doing my job" Jonah told her hugging her back "I'm glad you're ok though"
"Thanks Doctor Breeland" Peter said shaking his hand "If he'd just been…"
"He's going to be fine" Jonah told them "He had these miracle hands working on him"
AnnaBeth rolled her eyes. Hearing Jonah sound like his normal self though made her feel instantly safer, they couldn't still be in danger if he were back to cracking jokes. She felt exhausted.
"Come on partner" Peter said putting an arm around her and walking her outside.
"Do you think Chief would let me stay?" She asked looking up at him "I don't like that thought of him waking up all alone"
"Go ask him" Peter told her putting a hand on her shoulders and giving them a squeeze "I'm sure he'd prefer that than waking up to Capp's face"
AnnaBeth grinned as Capp looked overhearing his name being said. She squeezed Peter's hand and walked over to Chief Boden. Who she was over the moon was back at work.
"Chief can I…." She started.
"Go ahead" He nodded "I want regular updates"
"Yes Sir" She told him.
She ran over to hug Gabby and told her she would see her later before heading back inside. The place was a mess. Everyone had stepped in to help put the place back together.
"You can't be in…" A nurse started.
Jonah looked up from a file he had in his hand and raised an eyebrow at AnnaBeth.
"She's ok Janet" He told the nurse.
'Thank you' AnnaBeth mouthed before walking into the room Kelly was still set up in. She pulled up a chair and took his hand. There were so few people in Chicago who really meant something to her, but Kelly was one of them. She couldn't stand the thought of anything happening to him. It hurt her to see him like that. His eyes were still closed.
"You know you really were stupid for jumping in like that" She said softly wiping a tear away "You're not Superman you know"
"The aim wasn't to get blasted" He croaked opening an eye.
"That was really really stupid" She said looking up at him feeling relief wash over her.
"You said that" He pointed out managing a half smile.
"Don't talk you need to rest" She said "I'll get a Doctor"
AnnaBeth got up to leave but he kept hold of her hand. He would normally put on a brave face, but he knew how close he really had come to dying.
"Can you just sit with me?" He asked.
AnnaBeth picked up his call button and used that instead. Kelly had to stay overnight. He slept most of the time. AnnaBeth had stepped out to call Chief Boden but then had gone right back into the room.
She woke up with a tap on her shoulder. She felt an ache in her neck. She sat up rubbing it and realised she had fallen asleep leaning forward in the chair with her head on the bed next to Kelly's hand.
She blinked a few times looking around. Kelly was sat up looking at her with an amused smile on his face, which she was glad to see was a little less pained.
"Are you alright?" She asked.
"Are you?" He asked "I woke up and you were still here, you didn't have to stay all night"
"What time is it?" She asked confused self consciously patting her hair.
"7 am" Jonah said stepping in from the doorway "I have to say you look like you were the one blasted by a grenade"
"Some bedside manner" She muttered.
"You're not the patient" Jonah pointed out.
"So, when can I get out of here Doc?" Kelly asked smiling at AnnaBeth who had pulled out her hair tie and was redoing her hair smoothing down the birds nest that had formed on top of her head.
"A few days yet at least" Jonah told him.
"I could just rest at home" He suggested "Save taking up a bed"
"Do you live alone?" Jonah asked.
"No, I live with another firefighter, paramedic trained" He told him.
"I can check in as well" She said.
She hated hospitals as well. She understood not wanting to stay in for longer than necessary, but she was worried that he'd leave, and something might happen.
Jonah gave Kelly a list of symptoms that if he had that he would need to come straight back in. AnnaBeth promised to stop in and check his blood pressure and his dressing.
"You don't have to do that" He insisted.
"Do you want to get out of here?" She asked raising an eyebrow.
"Right" He nodded "Like AB said, I've got plenty of care"
"Uh huh" Jonah said not seeming overly impressed but not arguing either "You need to get someone to pick you both up"
AnnaBeth called Casey. At least going through a traumatic experience made her be a little less mad at him. They both helped Kelly into the apartment and into his bedroom despite his protests.
Casey went to get Kelly a bottle of water to take his painkillers with as AnnaBeth sat on the edge of his bed. She hadn't been in there since the night her apartment was broken into.
"You should go and get some sleep" He told her.
"I'm fine really" She told him "I need to check your dressing soon, so I'll stay awhile if that's ok, but don't worry I'll let you rest"
"You don't have to go" He told her "Thank you for staying with me, I don't like to admit it, but it was scary there for a minute"
"It was" She nodded.
"If you want you can use the shower" He said "I think Gabby still has some clothes here you can borrow"
"Are you trying to tell me I stink?" She teased "A shower sounds like heaven"
AnnaBeth showered and borrowed an old t-shirt of Kelly's and some sweatpants of Gabby's because it was all she could find. She towel dried off her hair. She looked in the mirror. She looked exhausted.
Kelly didn't seem to want to go to sleep. AnnaBeth had never nearly died but she could imagine that you might be wary to close your eyes.
"Pick a movie" She said walking over to his collection.
"You know you don't have to…" He started.
"Kelly Severide, I said pick a movie" She said with a hand on her hip "Friends stay with friends, it's me or Capp"
"Ok ok" He winced as he laughed "You're all intimidating when you're being bossy, what happened to the sweet AB"
"She'll be back with chicken soup when you pick a movie and stop acting like you're a burden" She retorted.
Kelly settled on a movie but insisted her wasn't hungry. He patted the space beside him on the bed. AnnaBeth sat on his good side just in case she knocked into him. Part way through the film she changed his dressing. They were both falling asleep by the end too weary to take any of it in. AnnaBeth went to get up to go home when Kelly put his good arm around her.
"Stay" He said softly still half asleep and they drifted off again.
