THE QUEEN OF THE UNDERWORLD

Persephone was angry, no, she was furious! And if there were any other words for furious, she would be those too!

It hadn't been enough for Hades to have not one, but two illegitimate children with the same woman. No, Hades had decided to bring one of his brats to the underworld, their home!

She had come to the Underworld after Summer ended, expecting to see a very lonely Hades awaiting her return. She had not expected to see a small child running around the palace, playing with a hellhound plushy.

"HADES?"

A moment later, Hades burst in looking frantic and exhausted at the same time.

"Uh... Hello?"

Persephone exploded, "WHAT IS THIS THING?" she yelled gesturing at the little boy who had stopped playing and was gazing at her curiously.

Hades fidgeted, "This is my son Ni-"

"YOUR SON?"

"Wait! Before you get mad, I can explain. You see, that bastard Zeus killed Maria and Bianca! He had nowhere to go!"

Persephone was till unimpressed, "So? You could have sent him to an orphanage, or literally anywhere else except here! Mortal children don't belong in the Underworld."

Hades gave her the 'Fearsome King of the Underworld' version of puppy dog eyes.

"Please Persephone! You don't need to take care of him at all, if you don't want to! I even hired a skeletal babysitter!"

Persephone sighed and massaged her forehead, despite his cold exterior, the Lord of the Underworld was really just a huge softy. Why did she have to be the mature one?

"Fine. Just keep it out of my sight."

Hades frowned, "He's not an it. His name is Nico."

Persephone rolled her eyes, wondering why people would ever consider the Lord of the Underworld to be scary.

*************2 months later*************

Persephone flopped onto her bed and groaned.

That child was an absolute menace! He left his toys lying around, and... well technically that was all that he did, but it was still annoying!

At first she had thought of sending the child somewhere in the world where her husband wouldn't find him. Like Alaska maybe.

But whenever she got close to executing one of her plans to get rid of the little menace, she froze. Nico looked almost exactly like his father. The same deep, probing eyes and sharp cheekbones. No matter how many times she tried, she couldn't bring herself to hurt the adorable little boy.

She could tell that Hades needed a little bit of joy in his life right about now. He hadn't seen his other daughter, a roman demigod whose name had something to do with nuts, in years. The girl's mother, Marie Levesque had taken advantage of her husbands love and tried to make herself a queen. As if someone like her could possibly become a queen! Persephone wasn't sure which one of them she hated more, Maria di Angelo, who had won her husbands heart and had given birth to two demigod children, or Marie Levesque, whose greed had forced Hades to indirectly curse his own daughter.

She couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor girl. The two of them had never met, but she couldn't imagine what Marie's daughter was going through. It made her wonder why Hades hadn't brought her down here as well. Her husband adored all of his children, so why did he save one, but not the other? She shook her head, it was really none of her concern. If anything, she should be glad that she only had one brat to deal with.

Before she could decide on whether or not she should try to dispose of the boy again, she heard someone knock on the door.

"Come in!" she called.

A tiny boy stepped shyly into the room. Persephone would have cooed if she hadn't been so confused. For a 3 year old boy, Nico was quite smart, and had enough common sense to see that Persephone didn't like him. Why would he voluntarily seek her out?

"Hi Miss Persephone" he said quietly.

Persephone just nodded and beckoned the boy forward.

He held out a messy flower crown made of poppies.

"I made this for you." he said nervously, shifting from foot to foot.

Persephone raised an eyebrow. It was obvious that Nico had put a lot of effort into it, but why?

"Who put you up to this boy?" she demanded harshly.

"I noticed that you looked really grumpy this morning." He mumbled, "Papa said that you like flowers, so I tried to make a flower crown."

Persephone opened her mouth to say something, but Nico pressed on, a lot quicker now.

"Bianca showed me how to do it once! She thought I wasn't listening, but I was. It's not very good though."

Persephone gaped, "You did this... for me? Without anyone telling you to?"

She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that the brat was actually doing something nice for her.

Nico nodded, "You were sad. I thought that flowers might make you smile."

Persephone felt like laughing, was Nico really trying to make friends with her? As laughable as it was, she could tell that the boy was being sincere.

She smiled at the little boy in front of him.

"Thank you Nico."

Nico beamed, "You called me Nico! And you're smiling! The flowers worked!"

Persephone chuckled in spite of herself, it was refreshing to see such a lively and cheerful child running around the Underworld, which was always cold, dark and full of dead people.

It would take a long time for her to get to the point where she could look at Nico without the seeing a bitter reminder that of the fact that she wasn't his mother, that Hades had fallen for another woman. But today Nico had somehow managed to break through her icy exterior and had made her laugh. It wasn't much, but it was a start.

A.N:

Hey guys! Sorry about the short chapter! I wanted to write a few chapters about Nico's life in the Underworld before moving on to the whole joining the Hunters thing, so the next few chapters will probably just be a lot of family fluff between Nico, Hades and Persephone. I'll try to update again soon!

Please review!
