Chapter 15
Author's note: So sorry it has taken so long to post this my beta and I have been very busy with life and then her computer died. Also there are a lot of muggle medical things going on in this chapter. I find it more interesting and I get to torture the character more that way. If you have a problem with it please just ignore it or don't read the story because I enjoy writing it that way and I am not going to change that. Please forgive us and please continue to comment I love reading them. Also if you have any suggestions or things you want just ask. As Poppy began to examine Harry she realized that he was not breathing. She then grabbed an Endotrachel tube, an IV needle and a drip. She also grabbed a heart monitor. She then walked back over to Harry. Poppy put the tube down Harry's throat, attached the heart monitor pads to Harry's chest, turned on the machine, and put the IV in Harry's arm. She attached the IV tube to the drip to help keep Harry from getting dehydrated. By the time she had finished Severus and Remus arrived. Remus said, very out of breath since they had pretty much ran through the castle,
"I overheard Albus telling Pomona (Sprout) that he was heading down here to talk to you. We need to hide Harry." Without saying a word Poppy pulled out her wand and made Harry disappear. She then turned around and walked over to the cabinet. She grabbed a glass, two vials and a syringe. She then put some of each liquid into the glass mixed it up and then inserted the syringe into the glass. She then grabbed the full syringe, a glass of water, an alcohol swab, and some gauze and walked over to an empty bed. As she set the stuff down, she told Remus to sit on the bed. He gave her a funny look but stupidly did it anyway. Poppy then grabbed Remus' left arm and began to wipe it down with the alcohol swab. Remus tried to pull away saying, "Whoa What is going on here?" Poppy replied while tightening her grip on his arm,
"I am giving you and Severus a reason to be down here when Albus arrives." She finished wiping his arm and picked up the syringe then continued talking, " This is a mixture of a dizziness drought and a fatiguing infusion. It will make you appear to have no color in your face and look like you feel like crap thus Albus will not question why you two are down here. It will take effect in about a minute after the mixture enters your body. Now brace yourself cause this is going to hurt like hell." Severus placed his hand on Remus' shoulder and Poppy inserted the needle into Remus' arm. He covered his mouth to avoid screaming. Poppy finished injecting the meds and removed the needle. She placed some gauze over the injection site and had Severus hold it for her. Remus moved his hand and took a couple of deep breaths. She then disposed of the needle. She walked back over to the bed and took the gauze from Severus. She then placed a bandage on Remus' arm and handed him the glass of water and told him to drink some. After about 3 sips, Remus felt the potions begin to take effect. He handed the glass to Severus, closed his eyes and lay down on the bed. Just then the hospital door opened and in walked Albus.
"Hello Severus, Remus, and Poppy! Remus are you okay you don't look too good?" Remus sat up briefly, took the glass form Severus, took a sip and said,
" I am okay. I was walking back to my office after dinner when I suddenly got dizzy and almost fell down the stairs. It was a good thing Severus was there to catch me or who knows how many flights I would have fallen down." Remus then lay back down on the bed. Albus smiled saying,
"See I knew you had a heart Severus, well Poppy will get you felling better in no time. Lemon Drop anyone?" Everyone shook his or her heads. Albus then turned to Poppy and said,
"May I please speak to you in private for a minute please." They walked to her office and closed the door. It was then that Severus noticed his arm was slightly burning. As soon as the office door closed, Minerva walked in followed by George, Fred, Draco, Ginny, Luna, Neville and Hermione walked in. Before anyone could say anything Severus put his finger up to his lips to signal them to be quiet. He set the glass down on the table and walked out of the hospital wing signaling for the group to follow him. Once they were clear of the door, Minerva said,
"Where is Harry and why does Remus, I mean Professor Lupin, look like he saw a ghost." Severus explained,
"Professor Dumbledore is in the office talking with Madame Pomfrey. She made Harry vanish because Professor Lupin and I overheard Professor Dumbledore telling Professor Sprout that he was on his way to talk to Madame Pomfrey. She also gave Professor Lupin a mixture of a dizziness drought and a fatiguing intrusion so we would have an excuse to be in there. Stay here and stay hidden until I come get you. We don't need Professor Dumbledore finding all of you guys together." With that Severus walked back into the hospital wing as the group slipped into the shadows. A few minutes later Poppy and Albus emerged. Albus looked at Remus and said,
"Feel better and Severus you are a good friend." With that he left the hospital wing. Poppy walked back over to the cabinet and grabbed a vial, a syringe, an alcohol swab, some gauze, and tape then walked back over to the bed. She set the stuff down Remus opened his eyes and looked her. Then she grabbed his left arm and began to wipe it with the alcohol swab. Remus looked at Severus and said,
"Oh Shit not again!" Poppy looked at Severus and said,
"Do me a favor and place a silencing spell on the hospital wing." Severus pulled out his wand and cast Silencio on the hospital wing. Poppy then said,
"First thanks Sev, Second Remus this will get you feeling back to normal faster than just letting it work it way out of your system which would be sometime tomorrow. Third Sev, you may want to hold him down he is not going to like this one bit." Severus nodded and gently placed his hand on Remus' wrist pressing them to the bed. Remus took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Poppy held his arm and slowly inserted the needle into Remus' arm. Remus screamed in pain as he felt the needle going into his arm. Poppy then looked at Severus who gently tightened his grip on Remus. Poppy then began to inject the potion. Remus tried not to scream but he couldn't help it. The potion was racing through his body and just as Poppy was about done injecting the meds he felt like his arm was on fire and it began to swell up turning red. He then hollered,
"F***! That F***ing hurts!" Poppy and Severus both noticed his arm beginning to swell up. Poppy removed the needle and looked at it.
"Shit" She grabbed some gauze and handed it to Severus who placed it on Remus' arm. By this point Remus was breathing very hard. Poppy went over to the cabinet and pulled out another syringe, held it up to the light, and then filled it with a pink liquid know to muggles as Benadryl. She then quickly walked back over to Remus and said,
"Severus remove the gauze and hold him." Severus removed the gauze and Poppy inserted the needle into Remus' red and swollen arm. He screamed in pain she then injected the meds and removed the needle. Remus continued to scream. She removed the needle and wrapped his arm with gauze and tape. She then threw both needles away and came back over to the bed. Severus helped Remus into a sitting position and gave him the water. Remus' breathing slowed down and he glared at Poppy. She then said,
"Sorry about that I accidently grabbed a silver tipped needle. Feeling better?" Remus continued to glare but nodded. Poppy then made Harry reappear and checked his pulse. It was there but barley. She went over to the cabinet and grabbed some meds filled a syringe and put it into Harry's IV. Remus walked over to the bed, sat down in a chair, placed his head on the bed and held his son's hand. Severus went outside and grabbed the group and led them into the hospital wing. They came in just as Poppy was injecting the meds into Harry's IV. Minerva pulled Severus aside and asked,
"Where did you guys find him?"
"Filius found him unconscious down in the dungeon. He found us on the steps and told us he was in the hospital wing." Minerva sighed and said,
"Do you know what's wrong with him other than him being unconscious?" Severus shook his head then said,
"Hey Poppy what all is wrong this time?"
"He has a shattered wrist, bruised stomach, several broken ribs, high fever of 105.2, a major concussion, and a large bump on his head. I gave him Skelegrow to heal his ribs and his wrist. I also put some bruise cream on his stomach. Hopefully it will help we will have to wait and see. How long was he down in the dungeon unconscious before Professor Flitwick brought him in here about an hour ago?" Severus answered,
"He was not in first period this morning so my guess would be all day." Poppy sighed and said,
"I don't know how long he will be out for this time." Minerva then said,
"Fred, George please make sure that Miss Lovegood and Mr. Malfoy get safely back to their houses and keep the your sister, Miss Granger, and Mr. Longbottom in the Gryffindor Tower." Fred and George nodded and left the hospital wing. This left Minerva, Severus, Poppy, Remus, and an unconscious Harry alone in the hospital wing. Once the adults were sure that the students were out of earshot, Severus said,
"What are the chances of him actually waking up Poppy?" Poppy sighed and said,
"Given the fact that he was not breathing and unconscious when Filius brought him in and he was missing for most of the day and his fever has not dropped since his arrival, which means he probably woke up with it this morning, and he barley has a pulse and his hear rate keeps dropping…" Just then the heart monitor began to beep. Poppy ran and grabbed the AED machine and Severus began CPR. Remus picked up his head and began to rub Harry's head. Poppy attached the pads and turned on the machine and yelled 'Clear'. Nothing happened. Severus began CPR again while Poppy reset the machine. The machine shocked Harry a second time and still nothing. It took four shocks to bring Harry's heart rate back. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Poppy took the pads off and placed the AED under the cart by Harry's bed. She then placed the back of her hand on Harry's forehead. It was still burning up. It wasn't time for more meds so all she could do was get a cold rag to put on his head. Just then Tonks walked in and said,
"Hey Poppy have you seen my…" She stopped mid sentence when she saw her oldest son unconscious with a tube down his throat, a rag on his head and her husband with his arm wrapped. She looked at Remus and said, "What the Hell is going on?" Remus got up and went over to his wife kissed her and explained,
"Well for starters Harry was missing all day. He didn't show up in Potions, which was his first class of the day, and then Filius found him after dinner in the dungeons unconscious and not breathing and brought him here. He has a shattered wrist, several broken ribs, a bruised stomach, a high fever of 105.2, a major concussion and a bump on the back of his head. Poppy gave him Skelegrow to help heal the bones, bruise cream on his stomach and has given him a fever reducer to help his fever. Remus took a breath and Tonks said,
" Our poor baby! He will be okay he has to be okay. Now what the Hell happened to you?"
"Severus and I were on our way down here after Filius told us Harry was here and I overhead Albus talking with Pomona saying he was on his way to talk to Poppy. Long story short Poppy injected me with a mixture of a dizziness drought and a fatiguing infusion so we would have a reason to be in the hospital wing that Albus would believe. Well after Albus left Poppy injected the counter potion to what she gave me but she accidently grabbed a silver tipped needle. So when my arm started to swell up and I started having trouble breathing and she realized it she grabbed another one and injected Benadryl into my arm." Tonks hugged Remus and gave Poppy a death glare. Then the two of them walked over to the bed. Tonks saw her son up close and began to tear up so she buried her head in Remus' shoulder.
Meanwhile in the Gryffindor Common room Fred, George, Ginny, Hermione, and Neville all sat around talking. Hermione sat between the Weasley Twins crying. For a while no one said anything then Ginny spoke,
"Who would beat the crap out of Harry like that?" Fred and George looked at each other and before they could say anything Neville said,
"I bet Ron has something to do with this." Ginny got a puzzled look on her face and said,
" What makes you think cousin Ron has anything to do with this?" Fred spoke next,
"Gin Ron has been beating Harry up since first year. He is not a nice guy despite what he seems." Ginny sighed and Fred put his arm around his cousin. George wrapped Hermione in a hug and said,
"Harry will be alright Granger!"
Back in the hospital wing, everyone just stood around Harry's bed not saying a word. Severus made some chairs appear so everyone could sit. By this time it was around 11:00. Remus looked at Tonks and said,
"Did you stop and check on our other son before coming here?" Tonks nodded and said,
"Yes I did. He is doing just fine with Molly. She said that she enjoys having a little one in the house again." All four Professor stayed by Harry's side all night. Severus and Poppy stayed up all night to monitor Harry. Around 5:00 in the morning the heart monitor began to beep waking everyone up. Severus began CPR while Poppy grabbed the AED machine and attached the pads. It took 4 shocks to bring Harry's heartbeat back. Poppy removed the pads and placed the machine back under the cart. Severus picked up Harry's wrist. It had healed. He gently sent it back down. Then he placed his hands on his on Harry's sides and gently pushed down. His ribs were healed. He then lifted up Harry's shirt to check on the bruise.
"It looks just as bad as it did yesterday but it is a little more black." Poppy said looking over Severus' shoulder. He sighed and walked over to the cabinet grabbed, two pairs of gloves, a syringe, gauze and tape. He then walked back over to the bed. He set the stuff down on the table. He handed one pair of gloves to Poppy and put the other on himself. Poppy looked at Severus and he nodded. She then placed her hands on either side of the bruise. Severus placed the stack of gauze on Harry's chest. Tonks then said,
"Sev you don't think he is bleeding out again do you?" Severus looked at her and said,
"I hope not. I really hope not." With that Severus inserted the needle into the bruise. Remus buried his head in Tonks. Everyone held his or her breath as Severus began to pull up the syringe. The syringe began to fill with blood but it was thick and not runny like before. He breathed a sigh of relief and said,
"This is a normal bruise he is not bleeding out." He then removed the needle and Poppy placed some gauze on the bruise. Then Severus taped it down. Severus then threw the gloves and the needle away.
Two weeks later Remus walked into the hospital wing. He kissed Tonks and Harry. Poppy walked over to the bed and said,
"Remus glad you are here I need to talk to both of you. As you know Harry has been unconscious for two weeks now. At this point he is still not breathing on his own and his heart rate and his blood pressure keep dropping. He is stable for now but I am not sure how much longer he is going to keep fighting." Poppy sighed and said, "I know you guys don't want to hear this but you guys need to decide what to do as Harry's temporary guardians." Remus looked at Poppy then at Tonks and said,
"What are you saying?" Tonks sighed and said,
"She is saying that we need to decide if we want to keep him alive on the machines or if we want to pull the plug and put him out of his misery." Remus dropped his jaw looked at Poppy and said,
"Are you really asking us if we want to keep our son alive or not?" Poppy sighed and nodded. Remus then said, " Of course we are going to keep our son alive. I promised James and Lily that should anything happen to them I would protect our son. I refuse to let him die." Tonks then said,
"We are going to keep him on the machines." Another week went by and Harry's progress remained the same. Every day after classes Hermione would come and sit with Harry and tell him all about what happened in each of their classes. Some days she would even read to him from the textbooks. Some days Draco, Fred, George, Ginny and Neville would come with her. One evening after Hermione and Draco left Remus showed up and Poppy once again came over to talk to them. She said,
"It has been three weeks now since Harry was brought in. His body can't handle anymore. I hate to do this to you guys because I know this is a hard and unfair decision for you guys to make but I need you to decide what to do about Harry." Tonks began to tear up while Remus stood up and began to pace back and forth. He had failed James and Lily. How could he decide whether or not to kill his own son? This was his oldest cub. Severus and Minerva walked in to check on Harry. Minerva went over and sat next to her sister while Severus went to comfort his brother-in-law. Minerva held Tonks hand while she cried. Tonks looked at her twin sister with tears streaming down her face and said,
" I don't know what to do. He has been unconscious now for three weeks and Poppy has told us that we need to decide what we want to do about Harry. We have to decide if we want to keep him alive on the machines or pull the plug and …" She couldn't bring her self to say it. Minerva wrapped her arms around her sister and hugged her. She looked over at Severus who was hugging Remus who was crying as well. He just shrugged as he made eye contact with his wife. Minerva told Tonks that she would be right back. She went over to Poppy and motioned for her to follow her into her office. She closed the door. She then said in a whisper,
"What are the chances of Harry actually waking up?" Poppy sighed and said,
"Right now about as much of a chance as Sirius has of being proven guilty and being thrown back in Azkaban."
"Wow so not much of a chance."
"Yeah not much of one." Minerva thought for a minute then said,
" If he does wake up, by some miracle, what kind of shape will he be in?"
"He will probably be in rough shape. He will probably be on oxygen for a while. He may not be able to talk and may have to learn how to again and he may have to learn how to walk again. Of course that is the worst-case scenario. The best-case scenario is he wakes up and just has a massive headache. We will need to wait and see what happens." Just then they heard Severus scream for Poppy. Poppy and Minerva ran out of the office and over to the bed. The oxygen machine was beeping. Poppy turned off the machine and removed the tube from Harry's throat. Everyone held his or her breath waiting for Poppy to tell them what was going on. Poppy however was holding her breath waiting to see if the heart monitor would go off signaling that Harry was flat lining or if Harry would breath on his own and his heart rate and blood pressure would come up. After the longest five seconds of everyone's life. Harry took a breath and when he did his heart rate and blood pressure rose up to a normal level. Everyone let out a sigh of relief. He was still unconscious but he was breathing on his own again. Remus hugged Tonks and the two of them smiled. They had gotten out of making a very hard decision. Tonks sat down next to Harry and took his hand. After dinner Hermione came by and saw Tonks and Remus sitting by the bed asleep and Harry breathing on his own again. She kissed him on the cheek and left the hospital wing. Severus and Minerva smiled as they sat off to the side grading papers. About 6:30 Harry started to wake up. He opened his eyes and it took him a little bit to figure out where he was. He looked on his right and could make out Tonks' pink hair and looked to his right and he could smell Remus. Harry squeezed Tonks' hand, since the other side had his IV and he couldn't move it. Tonks pulled her head up form the bed to see Harry smiling at her. Tonks smiled back kissed Harry and began to gently shake Remus who asleep on the other side. Remus sat up to see his cub looking at him. He gently placed Harry's glasses on his face. Poppy who had came over just to check his vitals found him awake. Poppy then asked him,
" First off how are you feeling? And second can you remember who beat you up?"
Harry thought for a minute and then said,
"My head hurts and my stomach hurts. Ron and Percy." Tonks just looked at Remus and Severus. Severus then said,
"Are you sure it was Ron and Percy?" Harry nodded. Severus looked at Minerva and she nodded and left the hospital wing. Severus then asked Harry, "May I please check your stomach to see how the bruise is looking?" Harry nodded. Severus then grabbed two pairs of gloves. He gave one to Poppy and put one on himself. Severus moved the blanket down and lifted up Harry's shirt. The bruise was gone. Severus then began to gently push on Harry's abdomen. Things were looking really good until Severus pushed on Harry's lower abdomen just below his belly button. Severus pushed in and Harry winced in pain. Severus made eye contact with Poppy. She nodded and did a quick scan of Harry's abdomen. After a few minutes she said,
"There is something there I can't tell what it is though. It looks like a mass of some kind." Severus cursed under his breath. He then walked over to the cabinet and grabbed two syringes. One he filled with a clear liquid. He also grabbed some more gauze. He then walked back over to the bed and set the stuff down. He then said,
"I am going to give you some pain meds and then I need to check and see you are bleeding out again." Severus then picked up the syringe full of the clear liquid and inserted it into Harry's IV. Tonks walked around to behind Harry's head and Remus went around to the other side of the bed and grabbed Harry's hand. Poppy placed her hands on Harry's abdomen. Severus looked at Tonks and said, "Are you ready?" She nodded. Severus then said to Harry, " You are going to feel the needle going into your stomach. The pain meds will help just enough to take the edge off but it will still hurt a lot. I am not going to lie to you. You can squeeze Remus' hand as hard as you need to. I also need you to try and stay at still and calm as possible okay buddy." Harry nodded and swallowed. Severus then said, "Okay on the count of three I am going to insert the needle. 1…2…3." Severus then inserted the needle into Harry's stomach. He screamed in pain. Tonks quickly pulled her wand out and cast Silencio on the hospital wing. Harry squeezed Remus' hand so hard that he began to loose feeling in it. Before Severus even got a chance to see if he was bleeding out. Blood began to come out from under the needle. Severus grabbed the gauze and placed it next to the needle and pulled the needle out. Poppy moved her hands to hold the gauze. The blood was seeping through pretty quick. Severus sent the needle down and quickly grabbed more gauze. Severus then looked at Poppy, Tonks, and Remus and said, " I guess we figured out what the blockage is." Just then Harry began to loose consciousness and the heart monitor began to flat line.
