It was Duel Monster Spirit Day at Duel Academy, and everyone was celebrating, including the duel spirits. Mindy and Jasmine were sitting at a table and the waiter had just brought them their drinks.
Waiter: Here's your Happy Lover Latte and your Chthonian Chai Tea. Enjoy.
Mindy: What a cutie.
Jasmine: Don't fall in love just yet Mindy. It's Duel Monster Spirit Day, and we have a whole day of flirting ahead of us.
At the Slifer Dorm, Syrus was drawing the outline for a duel field. He was going so fast he didn't notice the cans of paint blocking his way until he ran into them and fell over. He dusted himself off and saw Chumley next to the paint cans.
Syrus: Chumley, you're messing up my duel arena.
Chumley: Art has its price.
Syrus: What do you mean?
Chumley: I mean I'm drawing up posters to promote your costume duel today, pretty cool huh?
Syrus: That's really good. Of course if you want to draw in a big crowd, there's one more you should make. A big glam shot of the Dark Magician Girl.
Chumley: Guess I could put her in the corner.
Syrus: No way! She deserves the whole poster!
Chumley: But what about Des Kangaroo and Des Koala?
Syrus: Hello, they're not even real.
Chumley: Neither is Dark Magician Girl.
Syrus: Don't you ever say that again, ever!
Chumley: Okay, sorry.
Spirit: A costume duel? That's perfect!
Meanwhile, everyone else was sitting on the balcony for the Slifer Dorm talking about Banner, who had been missing since Alexis' duel with Titan.
Michael: I think we've been beating around the bush here. It seems pretty possible that Banner is working with the Shadow Riders.
Jaden: Don't say that! There's no way Banner could be working for them.
Lily: Calm down Jaden.
Zane: Jaden, I understand how you feel, but surely you must realize Michael has a point. Banner's the one who lured Atticus to the abandoned dorm where he became Nightshroud, and once his memories returned, Banner disappeared.
Bastion: Even I must admit, it's rather suspicious.
Jaden: I guess you have a point. Uh, what is Chazz doing?
They all turned their attention to Chazz, who was waving around a cat toy and calling for something.
Jaden: Uh, what's he looking for?
Bastion: His mind Jaden. Clearly, he's lost it.
Chazz: Actually, I'm looking for Banner's cat, because if we find it, we find him, duh.
Syrus: I haven't seen Pharaoh around the dorm in a while.
Jaden: What's up Sy?
Syrus: Come check it out.
He led them to the duel arena he set up, showing off Chumley's poster, which now showed Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl on it wearing duel disks.
Jaden: Sweet poster.
Syrus: Yeah. Even with the Dark Magician in it, Chum did a pretty good job.
Michael: Impressive work Chumley.
Chumley: Thanks.
Atticus: So it's a costume duel?
Jaden: Tight idea.
Zane: So who's dressing up as Dark Magician Girl?
Atticus: You do have someone in mind, right?
Syrus: Uh, not really. But I'm sure no one will mind. I'm just using her to sell the duel. You know, advertising.
Bastion: Uh, false advertising maybe.
Syrus: Wow, I really didn't think of that. Guess I'll need to find someone to play the part then. What about you Alexis?
Bastion: I think it's a fine idea.
Jaden: You'd make a great Dark Magician Girl Lex.
Alexis: Sorry guys, I already had a costume planned. I do have another idea who could be her though.
A few minutes later, they were standing in front of Ms. Dorothy who was wearing a Dark Magician Girl Costume.
Syrus: On what demented planet is this a good idea?
Chumley: Planet Chumley. Don't you think she pulls it off Syrus?
Syrus: Pulls it off? Please don't put that image in my head Chumley.
Dorothy: Excuse me, but I make a great Dark Magician Girl and have for ten years. That's how long I've owned this costume.
She struck a pose but some of the seams on her costume ripped.
Dorothy: I thought it was feeling tight in a few places. Would one of you mind sewing it up?
Everyone declined while Syrus freaked out.
Syrus: My costume duel is going to be a bust!
Later on, Syrus was sulking about his costume duel when he heard Chumley shout.
Chumley: Help! Duel monster!
Alexis: Calm down Chumley, it's just me. I'm going dressed as Harpie Lady, so what do you think?
Chumley: I think I'm majorly relieved.
Jaden: Cool costume Lex. So what are Jasmine and Mindy going as?
Alexis: Same thing. That way when we're together we'll be the Harpie Lady Sisters. So what are you gonna be Jaden?
Jaden: I'm not sure. I think I'll go with this.
He put on his costume, but no one knew what he was dressed up as.
Syrus: Jaden, what exactly is that?
Jaden: Well, there were a few monsters I wanted to be, so I took a few parts from each of them.
Alexis: Well, at least it's safe to say no one will have the same costume as you.
They heard a metallic clanking and turned to see Chazz walking up to them in his costume.
Jaden: Woah, Chazz dressed up XYZ Dragon Cannon.
Chazz: Now this is a costume.
Alexis: It's the best one I've seen.
Chazz: Uh, thanks Alexis. Purple hair and pointy ears, my big weakness.
Syrus: That's funny Chazz, I don't remember XYZ Dragon Cannon ever blushing.
Chazz: Shut up! Let's get down to business and start this costume duel. Who's it gonna be? Jaden, since no one has volunteered, I'm volunteering for you.
Jaden: Fine by me. Get your game on Chazz.
Chazz: Are you kidding, I can't duel in this costume, I can barely walk.
Jaden: Darn. What about you Chumley?
Chumley: Sorry, just ate.
Jaden: Syrus?
Syrus: Sorry, but I'm the Master of Ceremonies. I'm also doing the play by play.
Before Jaden could ask Alexis, a camera flash grabbed their attention. When they turned to the side, they saw Atticus with a camera in hand.
Alexis: What are you doing?
Atticus: Oh you know, just big brother stuff like taking embarrassing photos of you to show mom and dad.
Alexis: Uh, no you will not.
Atticus: And uncle Doug, aunt Gale, and cousin Alana.
Alexis: You're not showing anyone anything, now give me that camera!
Atticus: You'll have to catch me first!
Jaden: Ah man, now I've got no one to duel.
?: That's not true. I'll duel you.
Jaden turned to face the one who spoke and saw a girl who looked exactly like Dark Magician Girl. But it was more than a resemblance, it was actually the spirit of Dark Magician Girl. All the boys in the crowd began to fawn over her.
DMG: So can I?
Chazz: What, duel? For sure. As organizer of this event, I say yes.
Syrus: But I'm the one who organized it. The answer is still yes though.
Just then, Michael, Bastion, Lily, and Zane walked up, Michael dressed as Zure, Lily as Queen's Knight, and Bastion as Amazoness Tiger.
Michael: Looks like Syrus' duel attracted a big crowd after all.
Lily: Anyone see who's dueling?
Bastion: It looks like Jaden and the Dark Magician Girl.
Zane: That's an impressive costume. If I didn't know better, I'd swear that was the real Dark Magician Girl.
Chazz: Syrus, where are you?
Syrus: Okay Sy, play it cool, don't be too obvious. Gotta let her know you're interested, but not desperate.
Chazz: Syrus! Quit going gaga over Dark Magician Girl and come to the commentator booth!
Syrus: I'm coming! Okay then, introducing today's main event.
Chazz: Hello, it's our only event.
Syrus: Yeah, that sounds much better. Today's one and only event, the Duel Monsters Costume Duel! Hosting will be Mr. "Chazz it up" Princeton,
Chazz: Hi.
Syrus: And myself, Syrus Truesdale. How ya doing?
Student: Just get on with it ya bozos.
Syrus: Fair enough. The duelists have just entered the arena.
Chazz: What do you mean? They've been there for ten minutes now.
Syrus: At my right, dressed more as a duel montage than a duel monster, give it up for Jaden Yuki!
Student 1: What a doofus.
Student 2: Yeah, no joke.
Student 3: No, he is a joke.
Jaden: Grr, that's it. You try and show some creativity, and this is the thanks you get.
Syrus: Is that what that was? I guess that's good to know for next time.
Chazz: Yeah, so we can stop him. My dog back home has more style and he's colorblind.
Syrus: Back on topic though, at my left, I'm thrilled to present the Dark Magician Girl! Isn't she just the absolute cutest?
Chazz: Nice job. Real professional.
Syrus: Like you weren't thinking it.
DMG: Hi you guys. Hope you'll all cheer me on.
Syrus: Go Dark Magician Girl!
Chazz: You know we're supposed to be neutral Syrus.
Syrus: Sorry, but I've shifted into high gear.
Chazz: You've lost it.
Syrus: Gentleman and lady, start your duel disks!
Jaden: I don't know who you are, but good luck.
DMG: You too.
Jaden: Now get your game on!
DMG: 4000 LP
Jaden: 4000 LP
DMG: Alright, I draw! I'll place one monster face-down and end my turn.
Crowd: Go Dark Magician Girl, we're rooting for you!
Jaden: So much for home field advantage. I summon Elemental Hero Bubbleman in attack mode!

Jaden: And due to his special ability, since he was summoned when I controlled no cards, I can draw 2 more from my deck. Next I play Polymerization to fuse Bubbleman and Burstinatrix to create Elemental Hero Steam Healer in attack mode!

Syrus: He looks tough.
Chazz: Guess we'll see.
Jaden: Now Steam Healer, attack that face-down!
Steam Healer charged Magician Girl's monster, revealing a little girl wearing a black dress.
Syrus: Check out Dark Magician Girl's monster, it's Fire Sorcerer.
Chazz: This should be interesting.
DMG: I play my Sorcer's special ability. Do your thing sweetie.
Syrus: What's her thing?
Chazz: By banishing two cards in Dark Magician Girl's hand, Fire Sorcerer can deal 800 points of damage to Jaden.
Syrus: Sounds like a plan. You go Dark Magician Girl!
Fire Sorcerer launched a stream of flames at Jaden, forcing him to cover his face.
Jaden: 3200 LP
Jaden: I'm not the only one getting burnt. I use Steam Healer's special ability!
Syrus: That's one scalding special ability.
Chazz: Yeah. It lets Jaden regain life points equal to the attack points of the monster he just destroyed.
Jaden: 4200 LP
The crowd began to boo Jaden.
Syrus: Seems the crowd is made at Jaden for, fighting back?
Bastion: What would they have him do? Surrender?
Michael: Probably.
Lily: Typical boys.
Zane: She's playing the crowd better than Jaden's playing his deck.
Jaden: I end my turn.
DMG: My move, I draw! And I summon Magician's Valkyria in attack mode!
Level 4/Light/Spellcaster

Syrus: That was a good move. As long as she's in play, Jaden won't be able to attack any other Spellcasters Dark Magician Girl has.
Chazz: Can I get a word in?
Syrus: Uh, maybe next time.
DMG: Now I play the spell Dimension Fusion. By paying 2000 life points, we can both summon as many of our banished monsters as possible.
DMG: 2000 LP
Jaden: Except I don't have any monsters banished.
Syrus: Tough brake Jay.
DMG: I summon another Magician's Valkyria and Dark Magician Girl!
Level 6/Dark/Spellcaster

Bastion: Strange. It was my understanding that only Yugi Moto possessed the Dark Magician Girl.
Zane: Mine too. Just who is this girl?
Lily: Are you thinking what I'm thinking Michael?
Michael: Yeah. I think she's the real Dark Magician Girl.
DMG: Go Dark Magician Girl! Trounce that Steam Healer with Dark Burning Attack!
Her monster fired a ball of purple energy from her staff at Steam Healer, tearing right through him.
Jaden: 4000 LP
Jaden: No more healing for him.
DMG: And now my two Valkyrias will attack you directly. Go, Double Mystic Scepter Blast!
Jaden: 800 LP
DMG: I end my turn.
Jaden: Well, when the dueling gets tough, the tough get dueling. My move! And I play the spell Fusion Recovery! With I'll return Polymerization and Burstinatrix from my graveyard to my hand. But they won't be there for long because I'm using Polymerization to fuse Burstinatrix and Avian to summon Elemental Hero Flame Wingman in attack mode!
Level 6/Wind/Warrior
ATK 2100/DEF 1200
Crowd: You're nothing but a bully, picking on girls.
Syrus: What is he doing? It's like Jaden doesn't want her to win or something.
Chazz: Take a chill pill Syrus. It's still the Dark Magician Girl who has the edge in this duel. Since she has two copies of Magician's Valkyria on the field, Jaden can't attack any of her monsters.
Jaden: Guess I'll just throw down two face-downs and call it a turn.
DMG: Here goes! I play the equip spell Magic Formula on my Dark Magician Girl! This will raise her attack points by 700.
DMG: 2000-2700 ATK
Syrus: With that boost, she'll beat the Flame Wingman easily!
Bastion: Jaden's lost?
Chazz: She's won?
Crowd: Finish him!
DMG: Dark Magician Girl, attack Flame Wingman!
Jaden: I play the trap Staunch Defender!
Alexis: Strange choice. That'll force all her monsters to attack Flame Wingman.
DMG: What gives? Why would you want me to attack with all my monsters?
Jaden: Because I also have the trap Invincible Hero. This card will make Flame Wingman unable to be destroyed in battle this turn.
Jaden: 200 LP
DMG: Oh well, you got me good there.
Syrus: Chazz, care to explain what's going on?
Chazz: Since Flame Wingman wasn't destroyed, she has to attack it with her Valkyrias due to the effect of Staunch Defender.
Syrus: But the Flame Wingman is way stronger.
Crowd: Don't do it, we beg you!
Jaden: Sorry, but I play to win. Flame Wingman, get ready.
One of Dark Magician Girl's Valkyrias fired an energy blast at Flame Wingman, but he shot a jet of flames at her, overpowering her attack and destroying her.
DMG: 1500 LP
Syrus: It doesn't look good for her, does it?
Chazz: Let me put it this way: no.
Jaden: And now due to Flame Wingman's special ability, you take damage equal to your destroyed monster's attack points.
DMG: 0 LP
Winner: Jaden
DMG: Thanks for the fun match. Even though I lost, it was great to meet so many of my fans. Thank you all for cheering me on.
Crowd: It was our pleasure!
Syrus: So many of her fans? Could she be?
Jaden: Boy, it's not easy being the bad guy.
Alexis: Sometimes the girls like the bad guys. Or so I've heard.
Jaden: Thanks Lex.
Bastion: Now the only question is, who was that girl?
Zane: You'd think we would've seen her around.
Jaden: Yeah, you would think.
Michael: Think we should tell them?
Lily: Nah, let 'em keep wondering.
That night, the party was still going, and Syrus was trying to find the Dark Magician Girl.
Syrus: I have to find her. I have to know if that was really her.
Mindy: Check us out. Harpie Lady Sisters in the house.
Jasmine: But no pictures, Lexi won't allow it.
Alexis: You wouldn't either if you had a brother like mine.
Syrus: Oh well, I guess she's gone. I just wanna say, you made me remember how much fun dueling can be. I won't forget you Dark Magician Girl.
He sat down and stared up at the night sky. Jaden turned and saw Syrus sitting and was going to go over to him, but he saw Dark Magician Girl appear next to him.
DMG: I won't forget you either Sy, and I'm sure one day we'll meet up again.
She leaned over and planted a kiss on his cheek before disappearing.
Syrus: Okay, time for bed. I'm starting to hallucinate.
Jaden: Well then that makes two of us, because I saw her too Syrus.
Syrus: Saw who? There's no one here, don't be ridiculous Jaden.
Jaden: Yeah okay, you're right. There's no one here. But I think that no one has a crush on ya Sy.
Syrus: So you really did see it, and it really was her. And you know what that means? I really got my first kiss.
Jaden couldn't help himself and began laughing.
Syrus: Stop laughing, it counts.
