Jaden and Syrus were having a practice duel in their room to prepare for the promotional exams, but Jaden was so worried that Syrus beat him easily.
Jaden: Oh man, if I don't get my nerves in check I'm gonna flunk the test for sure.
Syrus: Maybe you should get some tips from Chumley. He looks pretty relaxed.
Jaden looked up at his other roommate, who was still asleep.
Jaden: That's weird. Even Chumley doesn't sleep in this late.
Syrus: He was up all night studying.
Jaden: That's an awful lot of studying, especially for Chumley.
Syrus: He needed the studying. He's already failed the exams twice. If he fails this year, he'll have to leave Duel Academy.
Little did either of them know that Chumley was actually awake and that he had heard their conversation.
Chumley: And with my dueling skills, that's exactly what's gonna happen.
That afternoon, the three of them where in art class. Syrus had painted Dark Magician Girl and Jaden painted what he said was supposed to be Elemental Hero Sparkman, but no matter how hard Syrus tried, he couldn't see it.
Jaden: What'd you draw Chumley?
He showed his roommates his artwork and they were stunned by how great it looked.
Syrus: Wow, if I didn't know better, I'd swear I was looking at an actual picture of Ayers Rock.
Jaden: What's Ayer's Rock?
Chumley: It's a famous landmark in Australia. My dad took me camping there last year.
Everyone around them began complementing Chumley on his work when Crowler appeared on the monitor.
Crowler: Chumley Huffington, please report to Chancellor Sheppard's office.
Chumley made his way to Sheppard's office and found the Chancellor and Crowler waiting for him.
Chumley: Did I do something wrong?
Sheppard: Not at all. In fact, I called you in for some good news.
Chumley: Really?
Sheppard: Look at this.
He handed Chumley a card, and he couldn't believe what it was.
Chumley: This is the card I submitted to the Industrial Illusions Create a Card Contest.
Sheppard: Indeed it is. Your card won the contest and is now an official Duel Monsters card.
Chumley: But who chose-
?: I did.
Chumley turned to the side and saw the owner of Industrial Illusions, Maximillion Pegasus himself, on Sheppard's video screen.
Chumley: Mr. Pegasus, it's an honor.
Pegasus: Actually, I'd say the honor is mine. The honor to finally meet the winner of our contest. There were many cards submitted, but once I saw yours, I knew it was the winner.
Chumley: Thank you sir.
Pegasus: That's not the best part. I want you to work for me at Industrial Illusions, as long as your teachers give me their recommendations.
The call ended and Chumley turned back to Sheppard and Crowler.
Sheppard: This is certainly an amazing opportunity. You have my recommendation.
Crowler: While it is impressive that Pegasus himself has offered him a job at Industrial Illusions, Chumley has not yet passed him exam.
Sheppard: Come now Crowler, give the boy a break.
Crowler: Alright. Chumley Huffington, if you can defeat me in a duel, I'll recommend you for the position. However if you lose, I'm afraid you'll be expelled from the academy. Do you accept these terms?
Chumley: Alright, I'll do it.
Crowler: Very good. You have until tomorrow to prepare.
Chumley left Sheppard's office and the weight of the situation finally hit him.
Chumley: Oh man. How am I gonna beat Crowler in a duel?!
Jaden: What do you need to do that for?
Chumley looked over and saw Jaden and Syrus walking up to him.
Chumley: What are you guys doing here?
Syrus: We wanted to check on you. So what were you called for?
Chumley: Well, you see-
Jaden: Wait a minute, isn't that the card you submitted to the Industrial Illusions contest?
Chumley: It is, but-
Syrus: Does that mean you won? Congratulations Chumley.
Chumley: Thanks guys, but-
Jaden: But what? You won, you should be ecstatic.
Chumley: I would be, except there's more.
Syrus: What is it Chum?
Chumley: If I can beat Dr. Crowler in a duel tomorrow, Pegasus will give me a job at Industrial Illusions.
Jaden: Are you serious? That's amazing Chumley. In that case, we're gonna do everything we can to help make sure you win tomorrow.
Chumley: Huh?
Syrus: Jaden's right. We won't let you miss out on an opportunity like this.
They spent the night helping Chumley prepare for his duel with Crowler. The next day came, and everyone was in the arena to cheer Chumley on.
Jaden: You can do it Chumley!
Syrus: Show Crowler what for!
Alexis: We're all rooting for you Chumley!
Michael: Show Crowler what you can do!
Lily: And that you deserve the job!
Crowler: Are you ready?
Chumley: You'd better believe it.
Both: Let's duel!
Chumley: 4000 LP
Crowler: 4000 LP
Chumley: My move. I set a monster face-down and end my turn.
Crowler: That all? I play the spell Magnet Circle LV 2. This card allows me to special summon a level 2 or lower machine type monster from my hand, so I summon Ancient Gear in attack mode.
Level 2/Earth/Machine
ATK 100/DEF 800
Chazz: Chumley is in for it now.
Crowler: Due to the effect of Ancient Gear, while it's on the field, I can special summon any other copies of it I have in my hand, and I just so happen to have a second one in my hand.
Bastion: He has two monsters out and hasn't normal summoned yet.
Michael: Which can only mean one thing.
Crowler: I sacrifice my monsters to summon Ancient Gear Golem in attack mode.
Level 8/Earth/Machine
ATK & DEF 3000
Syrus: Not good.
Crowler: Now Gear Golem, attack with Mechanized Melee!
His monster punched Chumley's, revealing his Des Koala.
Chumley: Due to Des Koala's special ability, it inflicts 400 points of damage to you for every card in your hand when it's flipped face-up.
Crowler: Maybe so, but due to my Golem's special ability, when it attacks a monster in defense mode, it inflicts piercing damage.
Crowler: 3200 LP
Chumley: 2800 LP
Michael: Even though he took damage, he took away almost 1000 of Crowler's life points.
Lily: Chumley seems like a completely different duelist today.
Crowler: It's your move.
Chumley: Thanks. I draw! And I summon Eucalyptus Mole in defense mode.
Level 3/Earth/Plant
ATK 300/DEF 1300
Chumley: I place one card face-down and end my turn.
Crowler: Very well, I draw. And I summon Ancient Gear Soldier in attack mode.
Level 4/Earth/Machine
ATK & DEF 1300
Crowler: Now Ancient Gear Golem, destroy that mole!
Chumley: 1100 LP
Alexis: Chumley's wide open!
Bastion: And since Soldier prevents him from using spells or traps when it attacks, he's done for!
Chumley: Not yet I'm not. I activate Eucalyptus Mole's special ability! When it's destroyed in battle, I can summon a koala monster from my deck, so I summon Big Koala in attack mode!
Level 7/Earth/Beast
ATK 2700/DEF 2000
Crowler: Not bad. I equip my Gear Soldier with Axe of Despair and end my turn.
Soldier: 1300-2300 ATK
Chumley: I draw! Just the card I needed. I play the spell Wild Nature's Release! This card pumps up the attack points of a beast or beast-warrior type monster by the same amount as its defense points, and I choose Big Koala!
Koala: 2700-4700 ATK
Chumley: Now destroy Ancient Gear Golem with Takedown from Down Under!
Big Koala tackled Ancient Gear Golem, sending him to the scrap heap.
Crowler: 1500 LP
Crowler: Impressive, but you've made one fatal mistake. Using Wild Nature's Release will cause your monster to be destroyed as soon as your turn ends, which will leave you open to an attack from my soldier.
Chazz: Guess Chumley forgot about that.
Chumley: Wrong. I play the trap Beast Soul Swap! This card lets me return Big Koala to my hand and summon a beast type monster with the same level, so I'll bring my Koala right back.
Lily: That was a great move. Since his trap removed it from the field and then brought it back, it counts as a different monster, meaning it won't be destroyed when Chumley ends his turn.
Alexis: And since it was summoned during the battle phase, Chumley can attack with it.
Chumley: Which is just what I'm gonna do. Big Koala, destroy that Gear Soldier!
Crowler: 1100 LP
Michael: Their life points are even.
Chumley: I place one card face-down and end my turn.
Crowler: Impressive Mr. Huffington. However, you still have a way to go before you defeat me. I draw. And since I drew Pot of Greed, I can draw an additional two cards. Next, I banish Pot of Greed, Axe of Despair, and Magnet Circle from my graveyard to activate Card of Burial Magic, meaning I draw 2 more cards.
Syrus: I don't like this.
Crowler: And now I play the spell Ancient Gear Factory. For starters, I reveal a level 5 or higher Ancient Gear monster in my hand, and it's one I believe you're familiar with. My Ancient Gear Golem.
Michael: This is bad. Crowler's about to summon his golem again.
Alexis: How? He's got nothing to sacrifice.
Sheppard: He doesn't need to with that factory of his.
Jaden: Chancellor Sheppard? What are you doing here?
Sheppard: I just love a good duel, but it doesn't look good for Chumley.
Crowler: Indeed. Due to the effect of my factory, by banishing Ancient Gear monsters from my graveyard whose total levels are twice that of the monster I showed you, I can summon that monster without a sacrifice this turn. So I banish all Ancient Gear monsters in my graveyard to once again summon the Ancient Gear Golem!
Bastion: Unbelievable!
Crowler: You have done well thus far Chumley, but I cannot go easy on you. Ancient Gear Golem, attack Big Koala with Mechanized Melee!
Chumley: 800 LP
Chumley: I play the trap Animal Trail! Since you destroyed Big Koala, I can add a beast type monster from my deck to my hand, like my Des Kangaroo!
Crowler: Very well. I play the spell Ancient Gear Drill. By discarding one card from my hand, I can select a spell card from my deck and place it face-down on my field. However, I can't activate that card this turn. This card will do nicely. It's your move.
Chumley: All right, here goes everything. I draw! Sorry Dr. C, but this duel is mine. I play the spell Ayers Rock Sunrise!
Jaden: That's the card Chumley made!
Michael: Well, I guess we get to find out what it does.
Chumley: First, I can summon a beast type monster from my graveyard, and then the attack points of Ancient Gear Golem will go down by 200 for every beast, plant, or winged beast type monster in my graveyard, so come on back Big Koala!
Golem: 3000-2600 ATK
Syrus: He's got more attack than Ancient Gear Golem now!
Chumley: And I'm not done yet. I play Polymerization to fuse Big Koala and Des Kangaroo to summon Master of Oz in attack mode!
Level 9/Earth/Beast
ATK 4200/DEF 3700
Crowler: Truly impressive. But I'm afraid it's not good enough. My face-down card is Limiter Removal, so if he attacks, he loses.
Chumley: You can't fool me with that face-down Crowler. If I had to guess, it's Limiter Removal!
Crowler: What?!
Chumley: I've learned a lot this year, and it's all thanks to my friends. You made a big mistake, because you're not just dueling me, you're dueling all of my friends as well. I play the equip spell Megamorph! This will double the attack of Master of Oz since I have less life points than you.
Oz: 4200-8400 ATK
Alexis: Way to go Chumley!
Jaden: Now take it home!
Chumley: You bet. This attack is for me and the all the people who believe in me. Master of Oz, go get Ancient Gear Golem with Outback Attack!
Master of Oz charged Ancient Gear Golem and drove his fist straight through the monster's chest, causing him to explode.
Crowler: 0 LP
Winner: Chumley
Chazz: He actually won?
Jaden: Way to go Chumley!
Crowler: Congratulations Mr. Huffington. You've earned my recommendation. I know you'll make Duel Academy proud.
Chumley: Thanks teach.
Syrus: I'm gonna miss him.
Jaden: Me too Sy, but Chumley has a chance to live his dream, so it's our job to be happy for him.
Syrus: You're right.
Soon, Chumley was on an airplane headed to his new job.
Jaden: Safe travels Chumley!
Chumley: Thanks for everything you guys. I'll never forget you.
