AN: Just wanted to say that this is something I wrote a few years ago, so the writing isn't as good as I'd like it to be. I'm working on polishing it up so it might take a few days to get the next chapter out (plus it's Christmas). Also, for context, chapter 1 is 5 years after the prologue, so Ezra is 14 and Elsa is 12. Enjoy chapter 1!
*Five Years Later*
I followed my brother at a distance through the city, trying to look like a normal citizen, just like everyone else. Of course, it's not easy to do when you have hair so blonde it sticks out in a crowd. But hey, I can't help it. That's what Ezra says, at least.
As I walked, I kept an eye on my brother, who had a knack for sneaking off. Sure enough, he turned left instead of right. I sighed, then jogged towards the corner. I peeked around the side of the building, watching as Ezra easily swipes an officer's comm while pretending to ask for food.
As he turns the corner at the other end of the street, I follow, walking past the officers as if I was a normal, law-abiding citizen. Suddenly, I hear a voice emit from one of their comms, saying, "All officers to the main square – this is a code red emergency."
"It's your lucky day," a tall officer said to a citizen they were trying to arrest before motioning for his partner and two storm-troopers to follow him.
"Repeat, this is a code red." Ezra had returned, and was standing next to the citizen he had just saved.
"Thank you," he said, offering him a jogan. Ezra took it, then saw me standing nearby. He motioned for me to come over, and started to load his satchel with the purple fruits.
"Hey, what are you doing?" the citizen asked, astonished as I helped myself to as many jogans I could fit in my own satchel.
"Hey, kids gotta eat," I replied with a grin, following Ezra up onto the rooftops.
"Who are those kids?" I heard the citizen mutter as we climbed onto the roof of a building.
Ezra and I walked over to the other side of the roof and crouched down, watching an officer trying to explain that he didn't call the code red.
"My orders are to get these crates loaded," he explained.
"Well, get them loaded then!" the tall officer commanded.
"I almost feel bad for them," Ezra said with a small smile. "Almost." Suddenly he got a strange look on his face. "That was weird..." he muttered.
"Ezra?"
"It was almost like..." he sat up and looked at the streets on the other side of the building. I followed his gaze to a man dressed in green, with brown hair pulled back into a short ponytail. Strange... I thought. Just then, the man turned around, and Ezra pushed me down.
"Ow! What was that for?" I complained.
"I... didn't want him to see us."
"Hmm..." I replied. "Is it that feeling thing again?" For as long as I could remember, Ezra had had some kind of sixth sense, as I liked to call it. For example, he was able to tell when someone was about to shoot a split second before they actually did, which gave him time to get out of the way. Other times, he'd known we had to get out of places right before something bad happened.
Ezra nodded in reply.
"Do you think he's bad?"
"No... maybe? I'm not sure yet," he said. "C'mere." We slipped to the other side of the roof, watching as the green man – my new name for him – walked past a house, stopping to pat his leg twice. Once he did, a large purple creature left a doorway and stood in the middle of the street. Green Man kept walking, stopping again to pat his leg twice next to a girl in colorful armor. She patted her gun holster three times, then walked away towards a speeder near where the officer was getting the crates ready to leave.
"Interesting..." Ezra whispered. We watched curiously as the girl threw a small bomb onto the speeder, calmly walking away as it blew up a few seconds later.
"Get those crates out of here! Keep them secure at all costs!" the officer yelled.
"All costs, huh?" I looked at Ezra, who had a mischievous look on his face. "You thinking what I'm thinking?" I nodded, grinning. We waited until Green Man and the purple creature cleared the troopers, then swung down from the roof, both of us landing on the same speeder. It was too risky to take more than one.
"Thanks for doing the heavy lifting!" Ezra said jauntily as he pulled back on the controls. We turned around and headed off through the city, Green Man and Purple Guy – yes, I know, my names are very creative – chasing after us on the remaining bikes.
As we sped down one of the streets, I heard a thump on the crates behind us. The girl in the colorful armor had jumped from the roof and landed on one of the crates. Ezra tried zig-zagging back and forth to knock her off, but she remained steady.
"Pretty gutsy move, kids," she said, holding up one of her blasters. I gasped as she pointed it straight at me. Then she shot at the last crate, separating it from the other. "If the big guy catches you, he'll end you – good luck!" she said with a wave.
"Good news: we lost Painter," I said.
"Painter?" Ezra replied, dodging a few citizens.
"Yeah, the girl in colorful armor. Anyways, bad news is, she took one of the crates. But the good news is we can go faster than Green Man and Purple Guy!" My brother sighed and shook his head at the names I'd come up with for those people. "Look out!" I screamed as we suddenly found ourselves speeding straight at four storm-troopers. Ezra got low, pressing on the controls, and just as they started to shoot, I saw Green Man shoot them down. "That was nice of him," I muttered suspiciously.
"Eh, he was saving himself too," my brother replied.
Just then, Ezra gasped as we ran into the marketplace, almost running into a crowd of people. Somehow, we managed to not hit anyone and make it onto the speedway.
"Who are these guys?" I heard Ezra mutter. A few seconds later, I glanced back and saw that two Imperial speeders had joined the chase and were shooting at Green Man and Purple Guy. One of the lasers hit our speeder, and Ezra cried, "That's never good!" before managing to jump into the opposite lane. We swerved around a few other vehicles before entering the clear.
"Think we're gonna make it?" I shouted nervously over the wind.
"Uhh... good question!" Just as I rolled my eyes in annoyance, the man in green managed to switch to our lane as well, and even worse, he was in front of us. Apparently he had dropped his crates and left them with Purple Guy.
The sparks that flew from the back of his speeder-bike flew straight for our faces, and by the time our vision was clear, we almost ran into the strange man, who had blocked our path. Ezra swerved around, pulling the bike to a stop next to him.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"I'm the guy who's stealing those crates."
"Hey, we stole... whatever this is fair and square," Ezra retaliated.
"Sorry, kids, but today's not your day. Hand over the crate." I managed to keep my mouth shut, remembering my promise to Ezra: if we got in a mess, he did all the talking. Supposedly it was for my safety, considering I was younger and had magical powers. Still, I desperately wanted to make a comeback. Luckily my brother had one in mind.
"Well, the day's not over," he replied with a smirk, pressing on the controls and zooming around the speeder. Barely a few seconds later, a TIE fighter appeared and shot at the man's bike. Somehow, he managed to not die – unfortunately.
"Have a good one!" Ezra said, waving as we took off. I gave my signature two fingered salute, grinning as Green Man watched us leave.
"So, what exactly are we gonna do with this crate?" I asked as we sped down the speedway.
"Good question, I'll figure it out when we… uh oh." I turned as the tell-tale sound of a TIE fighter sounded from behind us.
"Whatever is in this crate had better be worth it!" I cried as it started shooting at us. Ezra started maneuvering the speeder in a zig-zag pattern, trying to avoid being shot. Unfortunately, he failed, and the TIE managed to hit the back of the speeder, pitching us both into the tall grass.
"Ow…" I muttered as I laid on the ground, contemplating every choice I'd made in my life that had led to this moment.
"Um, Elsa, we need to move, NOW!" Ezra yelled, grabbing my hand and pulling me - still getting up from the ground - to the side as the TIE circled back around. I pushed myself up and ran with him, but we both knew that there was no way to outrun a TIE. Just as it was about to shoot, another ship swooped in, blasting the TIE right before it was about to hit us.
Ezra and I looked up to see that the ramp of the ship was extended, and standing on the ramp was none other than the Green Man himself.
"Hey, want a ride?" he asked casually. I glanced at Ezra, who's eyes were fixed on the horizon behind the ship, where four more TIE's were closing in.
"Kid, you got a better option?"
"Elsa, get to the ship; I'm getting that crate." I nodded, knowing that there was no time to argue. I leaped onto the ramp, followed seconds later by Ezra, who'd managed to jump up while holding the crate. Green Man helped push the crate into the ship, and the ramp closed as we flew off into the sky.
