Chapter 1:
Beep. Beep. Beep. Tommy smacked the alarm clock on his bedside table and rolled back over. He had just begun to drift off to sleep when he heard a knock on his bedroom door.
"Tommy, are you awake?" Tommy groaned in response to his mother's wake-up call. "It's a big day today. We have to leave soon to make it to the Professor's Lab." Tommy sat up suddenly. How could he have forgotten? Today was his thirteenth birthday, the day he would finally get his first pokémon.
Tommy nearly jumped out of bed in excitement and hurried to get ready. After a quick shower Tommy put on his khaki cargo pants and a black t-shirt. On top of his t-shirt he put on a light green jacket with a white Pokemon league logo at his chest. Finally he pulled on running shoes. Tommy then moved over to his dresser, grabbed a blue hat, and threw it over his curly brown hair.
"Tommy! It's time to go!" His mom yelled from downstairs. Tommy grabbed his backpack from the foot of his bed and hustled down the stairs. He then grabbed a protein bar from the kitchen and followed his Mom out the door. Tommy was so excited he was shaking. "Have you thought about which Pokemon you'll choose from Professor Oak?" His mom asked as they pulled out of the driveway.
"I fink I defided…" Tommy mumbled, his mouth full of granola. Clearing his throat, he continued. "I think I've decided, sorry. But I'm not 100% sure yet." Tommy gazed out at the towering buildings of Vermillion city as they drove towards the far-away Pallet Town, his legs bouncing up and down in a nervous jitter. He had only left his home a few times, but even then, he had only been visiting relatives or on a school field trip. Tommy could hardly contain his excitement any longer; not only would he get his very own pokemon, but he'd be able to begin his journey to take on the Kanto Pokemon Gyms. That was the plan anyway. Soon enough, he'd be on his way to the Indigo league. And then, he'd win it all.
As they continued driving, Tommy began to walk through each of his choices one last time.
I choose…Squirtle! The tiny turtle Pokemon sprung from it's pokéball and landed in front of Tommy. Use Water Gun!
The car sprung up as it hit a bump, jolting Tommy out of his daydream. Or, I could choose Charmander he thought. Bright lights shined in his eyes. And now, the announcer's voice boomed, from Vermillion City, Tommy and his Charizard! Tommy stepped onto the battlefield in front of him, pokéball in hand. Charizard, I choose you! The fire and flying Pokemon soared from its pokéball and landed with a loud thud on the battlefield. ROOOOAAAAARRRR! Charizard boomed.
"Sorry, sorry!" Tommy's Mom said as they hit a pothole, once again jarring Tommy from his imagination.
"It's okay Mom. How close are we?"
"We've already passed Viridian City, so we're getting pretty close." There was only one more choice Tommy could make, and that was Bulbasaur. Tommy had always found the seed Pokémon cute, but he wasn't sure if choosing a grass type as his starter was the best decision. He would definitely be able to find grass types pretty easily during his travels, but, then again, Venasaur was a great defensive pokémon, and a Venasaur would probably be one of the best grass types he could get.
"Ugh," he sighed. There were just too many decisions to be made. Truthfully, Tommy was extremely worried he'd make the wrong choice. But, soon enough, he had made up his mind.
"We're finally here!" His Mom exclaimed excitedly. Tommy exhaled and wiped his sweaty palms on his pants. He was ready. "The professor's lab is just on the other side of town, we'll be there soon." Tommy looked out the car window at Pallet Town. It was a small, quaint town, but it was very homely. It looked like a nice place to live, but it was a bit too rural for Tommy's liking. As they continued driving Tommy noticed a small house with a white picket fence a few blocks over. For some reason he liked this house better than all the rest. Tommy got one last glimpse of the house before it was out of his vision; a Mr. Mime carrying grocery bags stood outside of it, and Tommy could've sworn he saw the Pokémon turn its head to look at him. He must have imagined it though.
They soon began to ascend a hill, and when they reached the top, an immensely large and scenic laboratory stood before them. There was even a windmill behind the lab the looked like it was generating some of the power the building relied on. As the car slowed Tommy looked out towards the fields and forests behind the lab and saw countless Pokémon. Herds of Tauros kicked up dust and dirt while water Pokémon splashed and frolicked in the small river that flowed through the trees. The car slowed to a stop and Tommy popped open his door, climbing out.
"Wow," Tommy breathed. "There's so many Pokémon!"
"There's even more that you can't see." Tommy spun his head in the direction of the new voice. A middle-aged man in a lab coat with dirty-blonde hair stood on the steps of the laboratory. He smiled at Tommy, and he wore a red shirt and khaki pants beneath his lab coat. "Welcome my boy, it's wonderful to meet you. My name is Professor Oak. I'm a Pokemon professor and researcher, and this," he said, waving his arms around him, "is my laboratory."
"Nice to meet you," Tommy said, moving over to the Professor and extending his arm. Oak grasped his outstretched hand and shook it firmly. "Are all these Pokémon yours?"
"Heavens no," Oak laughed. "Many of these Pokémon are wild Pokémon for my research, or who just live on the land. Others belong to the trainers that live in Pallet Town but have more than 6 pokémon. Rather than leaving them in the PC system, they send them here, so they can be free to roam around. And others, are simply Seaking a place to live." The professor moved his finger to his head to imitate a horn and puffed up his mouth, evidently trying to mirror the pokémon, Seaking. Tommy forced a chuckle out even though he found the Pokémon pun to be a bit lame. But, the Professor seemed nice enough.
"That's amazing," Tommy said, "the Pokémon I mean."
"Professor," Tommy's Mom said, exiting the car, "it's so good to see you!"
"You too, Vanessa, it's been quite some time. It's wonderful to meet Tommy as well. Shall we get started then, Tommy?" Tommy nodded, a huge smile appearing on his face.
"I'm ready." Tommy said, mustering all of his confidence.
"Oh dear," Tommy's Mom burst out, "I promised myself I wouldn't do this," she said, dabbing her eyes. "I'm going to miss you so much, Tommy!" Tommy's mother grabbed Tommy and pulled him into her embrace.
"MOM!" Tommy exclaimed, "You're embarrassing me! And why are you leaving already? Don't you want to meet my Pokémon?"
"I'll meet your Pokémon someday honey, but a trainer needs to start his journey on his own. I'll see you again once you reach Vermillion City. You'll have to stop by the house, and I'll make you and your Pokémon an amazing meal!"
"Thanks, mom." Tommy hugged his mom tight. Tommy's mom returned to their car and started the engine. Rolling down the window, she called out one last goodbye. "Bye Mom!" Tommy responded, waving as the car zoomed down the hill and away from the laboratory.
"Alright then," Professor Oak chimed, "shall we get started?" Tommy nodded and followed him inside. They walked through a few large rooms that looked specified for Pokémon research. They were filled with many machines and gadgets that Tommy didn't recognize along with a few researchers and lab assistants bumbling about. But eventually, they came to a smaller room without anyone else in it. There were three pokéballs sitting on a stainless steel table in front of him. Tommy's heart began to pound; he knew what would happen next. He would finally get his very first Pokémon; it was time. "Well, I'm sure you know lots about the Pokémon here in front of you, but nevertheless, how about we talk about these-"
The professor was interrupted by a sudden noise from behind them. "Saur? Bulbasaur!" Tommy was thrown to the ground by the force of a Pokémon landing on his back. Tommy began to thrash on the ground thinking he was being attacked, but the Pokémon didn't bite him. Instead, he felt a tongue licking his backside affectionately. Tommy rolled over and sat up to see a small green creature with a large bulb on its back sitting in front of him. He smiled back at the pokémon, but the Pokémon stopped smiling as soon as it saw his face. Instead, the Bulbasaur looked crestfallen.
"Hey buddy," Tommy said, patting the Bulbasaur's head. "Is this one of the three starter Pokémon, professor?"
"Oh no," the professor replied. "I'm so sorry about this. This bulbasaur actually belongs to a trainer from Pallet Town. He's one of the trainers that keeps many of his extra Pokémon here. In fact, bulbasaur here" he said, now rubbing the seed on bulbasuar's back affectionately, "is a huge help. He's somewhat of a peacekeeper among the other pokémon at the lab, and has been for quite some time."
"Got it," Tommy said. "Why does it look so sad?" Oak spoke wistfully next.
"I'm afraid Bulbasaur thought you were its trainer and got a bit excited. His trainer hasn't…let's say been around in a long time, and to be honest, your outfit reminds me a lot of him at your age. From the back anyways." Tommy looked over the small seed pokémon sadly.
"I'm sorry buddy." Tommy walked over and petted the bulbasaur one more time, earning a quiet grunt. "Okay then," he said, standing up.
"Let's continue," Oak said, "Bulbasaur, if you wouldn't mind. I'm going to grab a few things." Oak moved towards one of the drawers beneath the countertop on the wall and removed a few items while the bulbasaur on the floor jumped onto the table. The bulbasaur then touched his paw to the buttons on all three pokéballs, and in a bright flash of red light three Pokémon emerged. On the far left was another Bulbasaur, but this one was slightly smaller and more playful than the other trainer's Bulbasaur. To the right, was a blue pokémon that resembled a tiny turtle. The squirtle looked around timidly, as if he was nervous to be in a room with a new person. Finally, in the middle, was a charmander. The lizard pokémon stood proudly and gazed at him with brightly shining eyes.
"Here you go," Professor Oak chimed, handing him a rectangular red object that resembled a phone. "This, is the newest model of the pokédex," the professor said. "The Pokédex is a sort of catalog with information about every pokémon that's been discovered." The device Tommy was holding had several buttons on the bottom of the device. There was a large circular button flanked on either side by arrows, as well as a bumper on the side of the device. "Go ahead and press the big circle in the middle while pointing it at a pokémon. Tommy held the Pokédex up and pressed the button. Bulbasaur, a voice chimed, the seed pokémon. A grass and poison type pokémon. There is a plant seed on its back right from the day this Pokémon is born. The seed slowly grows larger. "Try pressing the arrow to the right," Oak said. Tommy pressed the arrow and several new things appeared on the screen, including Bulbasaur's known moves, gender, and ability. Tommy then scanned the Squirtle. Squirtle, the tiny turtle pokémon. A water type pokémon. When it retracts its long neck into its shell, it squirts out water with vigorous force. This squirtle was also male, and had the ability torrent. Finally, he examined the charmander. Charmander, the Lizard pokémon. A fire type pokémon. It has a preference for hot things. When it rains, steam is said to spout from the tip of its tail. Tommy noted that the Charmander was male, and had the ability blaze.
"Wow, this is awesome. Thank you!" Tommy smiled.
"Of course! Any new trainer gets a Pokédex from the lab for their journey, as well as these." The professor handed him a small pouch. Tommy opened the pouch and peered inside.
"Pokéballs! Awesome!"
"Now, as a pokémon trainer, you're allowed to keep six pokémon with you at all times. If you catch any more, they must either be kept in the PC system, or, if you'd like, you can send them here." Tommy nodded and took off his backpack before placing the pokéballs inside. "Now then, are you ready to make your decision?" Tommy nodded, and took one last gaze at all three pokémon before him. Bulbasaur smiled, Charmander growled, and Squirtle looked down sheepishly.
"I choose…Charmander!"
"Char, charmander!" Charmander yelled excitingly, jumping up in the air. He then stuck out his tongue at Squirtle and Bulbasaur. Tommy laughed, and held out his arms towards charmander.
"Come here buddy." Charmander jumped up into his arms, smiling as Tommy petted his head. Tommy crouched down and set Charmander down. "You and me Charmander, we're gonna be the best team."
"Char!" Charmander said intensely, pumping his fist into the air.
"We're gonna train really hard, get super strong, and make it all the way to the Indigo league!"
