Chapter 52: Sins of Arcadia – Part 2
Goodwin and I were on our way home to the mansion in the late evening. I was driving ahead on my Duel Runner while my adoptive father sat in the back of the limousine that was several meter behind me. I had been busy the entire day in the Missing People division. I joined the team that drove to the alleyway where Sly was last seen to document and gather any piece of evidence and leads. Then, back at the HQ, I looked through the footage of every surveillance camera in a room alone for better concentration. I checked every single angle to get a better picture of the trench coat man's face to try confirming it was Sayer.
Sadly, the man had cleverly covered his face with that hat of his.
I let out a tired sigh as I drove down the streets. I was ready to get to bed after a nice dinner. My brain was exhausted and needed a break after today's work.
I looked down on the display on my Runner to check the back camera. The limousine was still behind me. I smiled softly and looked up, only to spot two dark figures up ahead on the road. It looked like they were just standing in the middle of the street and had no intention to step aside.
As I got closer, I pushed the honk bottom to make the duo get out of the way. "Get off the road!" I yelled as I slowly decelerated the Runner.
Next thing I knew, two Duel Monsters appeared in front of me and fired two black and purple energy spheres towards me. I had to skid to a halt and tilt my Duel Runner to dodge the spheres, the tires screeching on the concrete. I looked to my left and saw the spheres hit the concrete with an explosion, creating a middle-large crater. The limousine braked suddenly and seemed to lose control as it spun around on the road. Luckily, it didn't hit any pedestrians or other vehicles as it skidded to a halt.
The citizens cried in fear and panic as they ran away from the street. I quickly removed my helmet to get a better look at the two who just tried to harm me. My eyes widened as I saw the duo was dressed in the "grunt" uniform of the Arcadia Movement! Both of them had Duel Disks on their arms, so obviously they hadn't come in peace.
"You two are from the Arcadia Movement!" I concluded.
"You are half-correct and half-wrong", the female grunt said in a monotone voice.
"We are Nino and Kawasaki…from Neo Arcadia Movement", the male grunt spoke in the same voice as his partner-in-crime. "And we are here on a mission."
I got off my Runner and steadied it before I opened the seat compartment and grabbed my Duel Disk. At the same time, I heard quick footsteps approaching. I looked over my shoulder and saw Goodwin standing right next to me. He had his usual poker face, but his aura was radiating tension, while he had a silver Duel Disk with one blue and one orange jewel strapped on his left arm.
"If I may inquire, what exactly is your mission?" my adoptive father asked.
"That is confidential information, Director Goodwin", Kawasaki replied.
"You must earn it by defeating us in a Tag Duel", Nino added, raising her left arm with the green and white colored Duel Disk.
"Are you up for it? Or will you run?" Kawasaki finished, adjusting his blue and white Duel Disk.
I turned to Goodwin as the two of us made eye contact. "I guess we have to defeat them if we want to take them into custody and for interrogation, Goodwin", I said seriously.
"I agree, Estelle", Goodwin nodded. "Let us have our first Tag Duel together, daughter."
We held up our Duel Disks and activated them along with the two Neo Arcadia Movement grunts. The four of us inserted our Decks and allowed the devices to shuffle them. The truth was I had built a new Deck with my Blue-Eyes White Dragon cards and supportive cards, and even added a few Fusion Monsters. This was going to be the first time I was using this Deck, so this was a bit of a prototype.
"DUEL!"
Nino + Kawasaki: 8000 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 8000 LP
I drew the first five cards of my Deck. I got Protector with Eyes of Blue, Dragon Spirit of White, Polymerization, Dragon Spirit of White, and Negate Attack.
"I shall go first. Draw", Nino called, drawing her sixth card. "I summon Doctor Cranium in defense mode."
Doctor Cranium, Level 1: DEF 100
"I then shall play Terraforming, allowing me to search for a Field Spell card in my Deck and add it to my hand. I choose the Field Spell card Yami, and activate it."
The whole street got enveloped in an eerie and chilly aura. Black and dark magenta colors painted the buildings and the ground. Magenta lightning crackled among the dark clouds in the sky. The whole field made the hair on my body stand up by both the cold air and the high tension of the lightning.
"The Field Spell will give all fiend and spellcaster Monsters a little boost of 200 attack and defense points, but the fairy Monsters will lose the same amount of points", Nino explained. "I place two cards facedown and end my turn."
"I'll go next! Draw!" I called, drawing Dragon's Gunfire. "I start my turn by activating Polymerization! I fuse my two Dragon Spirit of White, which are treated as Normal Monsters in my hand, to call forth the origin of all dragons! I Fusion summon First of the Dragons!"
First of the Dragons, Level 9: ATK 2700
"First of the Dragons cannot be destroyed by battle, except by battle with a Normal Monster, and is unaffected by other Monsters' effects", I explained. "I may not be able to attack this turn, so I play Dragon's Gunfire! I can only activate this Spell card if I control a dragon Monster. I can choose to inflict 800 points of direct damage or destroy a Monster with 800 or less defense points. I choose to inflict damage!"
First of the Dragons screeched as he opened his fiery mouth to shoot a sphere of fire. The fire ball headed towards Nino and Kawasaki, but none of them panicked.
"I activate one of my Trap cards; Energy-Absorbing Monolith!" Nino called. "I can chain this card to an opponent's card effect that would inflict damage to us. The damage is negated and we gain Life Points equal to the same amount we would have taken."
The Trap card transformed into a stone tablet before it floated in front of the two grunts. The fire ball hit the tablet, but it was absorbed instead of causing damage. The remaining energy came out at the other side of the tablet and showered Nino and Kawasaki with Life Points instead.

I held back a small growl in my throat before grabbing my Trap card. "I place one card facedown and end my turn."
"Stay calm, Estelle", Goodwin told me. "These two seems to know what they are doing."
I just nodded with a soft hum.
"My turn. Draw", Kawasaki called. "I summon Healing Wave Generator in defense mode."
Healing Wave Generator, Level 4: DEF 1600
"Healing Wave Generator's effect! I choose another face-up Monster we control and we gain Life Points equal to that Monster's Level times 100. I choose Doctor Cranium."
Healing Wave Generator floated above Doctor Cranium and flashed a spotlight at the psychic-type Monster, as if it was scanning its companion. The mirror Monster then released a cloud of green particles that enveloped Kawasaki and Nino.

"I place two cards facedown and end my turn."
Now they had four facedown cards all together. We had to be very careful and try getting rid of them before the grunts could activate them.
"My turn. Draw!" Goodwin called. "I discard one card from my hand to the Graveyard to Special summon Supay, Duskwalker from my hand in defense mode!"
Supay, Duskwalker, Level 5: DEF 1900 – DEF 2100
"Supay, Duskwalker's effect! I Special summon Supay from my Deck."
Supay, Level 1, Tuner: ATK 300
Goodwin got my Incan cards after I had rebuilt my Deck. He said he felt a connection to the Incan Monsters due to his past as a Dark Signer, so I respected his wishes and gave him the cards related to Sun Dragon Inti and Moon Dragon Quilla.
"I tune Level 1 Supay with Level 5 Supay, Duskwalker! When the moon is full in the darkness, the whispering of the Devil will be heard! Entice them over to death! Synchro summon! Show yourself, Moon Dragon Quilla!"
Moon Dragon Quilla, Level 6: ATK 2500
"Moon Dragon Quilla, destroy Healing Wave Generator with Moonlight Blaster! First of the Dragons, destroy Doctor Cranium with Dragonbreath!"
The moon dragon opened her mouth mouths and shot four light blue energy beams at Healing Wave Generator, melting the mirror Monster into a mass of iron before it shattered into pieces. First of the Dragons fired a multi-colored fire that was in the shape a dragon, highly similar to the attack in the Pokémon anime. The fire dragon shrieked before it hit Doctor Cranium and shattered him into pieces.
"Doctor Cranium's effect!" Nino declared. "When he's destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, I can pay 800 Life Points to add one psychic-type Monster from my Deck to my hand. I choose my second Doctor Cranium."

"I place one card facedown and end my turn", Goodwin finished his turn.
"My turn. Draw", Nino called. "I play Dark Magical Veil! I pay 1000 Life Points to Special summon a spellcaster Monster from my hand. Come forth, Mutant Mindmaster!"
Nino + Kawasaki: 8100 LP – 7100 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 8000 LP
A magic circle appeared on Nino and Kawasaki's side of the field. It was glowing in pink and purple colors along with the mist. Mutant Mindmaster ascended from the magic circle as it received a boost-up by the Field Spell.
Mutant Mindmaster, Level 6: DEF 2500 – DEF 2700
"Next I summon Doctor Cranium in defense mode and end my turn", Nino called.
Doctor Cranium, Level 1: DEF 100
"My turn. Draw!" I called, drawing Dragon's Rage. "First of the Dragons, attack Mutant Mindmaster!"
First of the Dragons roared before he charged forward to tackle the spellcaster on the torso. Mutant Mindmaster braced himself and grabbed my dragon's horns to hold him back. Both of them were struggling against each other, refusing to give up.
"What are you thinking?" Nino said monotonic. "You will knock both our Monsters out."
I felt a tiny smirk grow on my lips. "Did you forget First of the Dragons' effect? He cannot be destroyed in battle, unless his opponent is a Normal Monster, so he survives this battle."
My dragon pushed himself through Mutant Mindmaster's grip and stabbed him through the armor with the horn on top of his nostrils. The spellcaster Monster cried in pain before he dispersed into pieces.
"Moon Dragon Quilla, destroy Doctor Cranium!" I continued.
The moon dragon decided to show some amount of mercy as she tackled the tiny doctor Monster with one of her heads. The psychic Monster shrieked in pain before shattering into pieces.
"Doctor Cranium's effect!" Nino declared. "I play additional 800 Life Points to add a psychic-type Monster from my Deck to my hand. This time, I choose Destructotron."
Nino + Kawasaki: 7100 LP – 6300 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 8000 LP
"I place one card facedown and end my turn", I called, setting Dragon's Rage.
"My turn. Draw!" Kawasaki called. "I begin my turn by playing Card Destruction. Each one of us must discard our entire hand and then draw the same amount of cards from our Decks."
I discarded my two Tuner Monsters from my hand and drew Dragon's Mirror and Maiden with Eyes of Blue.
"Now, by removing one LIGHT Monster and one DARK Monster from my Graveyard, I can Special summon Chaos Sorcerer!"
Chaos Sorcerer, Level 6: ATK 2300 – ATK 2500
"I equip Sword of Dark Destruction to Chaos Sorcerer, increasing his attack points by 400", Kawasaki continued. "However, his defense points are decreased by 200."
A sword with a sharp red blade and an ominous handle appeared in front of Chaos Sorcerer. He grabbed it without hesitation as he was enveloped in a dark aura coming from his new weapon.
Chaos Sorcerer, Level 6: ATK 2500 – ATK 2900
"Battle! Chaos Sorcerer, destroy Moon Dragon Quilla!" Kawasaki commanded.
The spellcaster grunted before he ran towards Moon Dragon Quilla while raising the sword in the air.
"Moon Dragon Quilla's effect!" Goodwin quickly declared. "When she is targeted for an attack, we will gain equal to half the attacking monster's attack points."
The moon dragon began glowing in a soft blue light that she shone upon the opponent. Chaos Sorcerer didn't flinch as blue particles floated from him and surrounded me and Goodwin, causing our hair to flow like water as our Life Points increased.
Nino + Kawasaki: 6300 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 8000 LP – 9450 LP
The gentle moment was broken when Chaos Sorcerer slashed Moon Dragon Quilla right in the middle of her body. Her four heads cried in pain before she shattered into pieces. The pieces blew towards me and Goodwin. I shielded my face with the Duel Disk from the pieces, feeling they were sharp due to the Neo Arcadia Movement grunts' psychic powers.
Nino + Kawasaki: 6300 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 9450 LP – 9050 LP
"I end my turn", Kawasaki said.
"My turn. Draw!" Goodwin called. "I believe it is time to end this. I discard one card from my hand to the Graveyard to Special summon Ascator, Dawnwalker."
Ascator, Dawnwalker, Level 5: DEF 1500 – DEF 1700
"His effect is the same as Supay, Duskwalker, allowing me to Special summon Fire Ant Ascator from my Deck in attack mode."
Fire Ant Ascator, Level 3, Tuner: ATK 700
"I tune Level 3 Fire Ant Ascator with Level 5 Ascator, Dawnwalker! When the Sun arises, all darkness is dispelled. Light, shine brightly! Synchro summon! Show yourself, Sun Dragon Inti!"
Sun Dragon Inti, Level 8: ATK 3000
"Next I play Monster Reborn to Special summon my Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand from the Graveyard!" Goodwin continued.
Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand, Level 8: ATK 2800
"Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand's effect! When he's Special summoned from the Graveyard, I may banish a Monster my opponent controls or from their Graveyard and he will gain attack and defense points equal to that Monster's original Level times 100. I choose Chaos Sorcerer."
The golden dragon opened his wings and released a bright light that shone upon the spellcaster. Chaos Sorcerer cried as his body began burning by the strong light. The sword in his hand shattered into pieces before he vanished from the field.
Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand, Level 8: ATK 2800 – ATK 3400
Now the field was empty, so we could win this Tag Duel.
"I activate my Continuous Trap; Zoma the Spirit!" Kawasaki called.
"What?!" I shouted in disbelief.
"I summon this Trap card as an Effect DARK zombie Monster to the Monster Zone in defense mode", Kawasaki explained.
An eerie purple mist steamed out from the Trap card and shapeshifted into a purple Monster that was completely made of purple bones with wings, and white claws, teeth, and a horn on the front of its face.
Zoma the Spirit, Level 4: DEF 500
"I Chain with my own Continuous Trap card; Dragon's Rage!" I called as my Trap card flipped up. "Now, when a dragon-type Monster destroys a defense position Monster whose defense points is lower than the dragon's attack points, you will receive piercing damage."
"Excellent, Estelle", Goodwin nodded. "Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand, destroy Zoma the Spirit! Attack with Clara Amalgam!"
Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand roared as he once again opened his wings and emitted a bright light from the body. It scorched Zoma the Spirit and caused worse burn marks than before with Chaos Sorcerer. The Trap card Monster cried in pain as it transformed into ash. The golden dragon then flapped his wings and blew the ash on Nino and Kawasaki, causing them to cover their faces.
Nino + Kawasaki: 6300 LP – 3400 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 9050 LP
"Zoma the Spirit's effect!" Kawasaki coughed through the ash. "When it's destroyed by battle, it inflicts damage to you equal to the attack points of the Monster that destroyed it."
The remaining ashes that had stayed on the field flew up and shaped itself into the soul of Zoma the Spirit. It roared before it headed towards me and Goodwin. The two of us braced ourselves to feel pain, but Sun Dragon Inti and First of the Dragons quickly covered us as they took the effect damage.
I watched in horror as the two dragons strained themselves to hold out the effect damage until it was done. Both of them grunted through their gritted teeth, but they didn't show any signs of giving up.
Nino + Kawasaki: 3400 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 9050 LP – 5650 LP
When the effect of Zoma the Spirit ended, the two dragons straightened up and turned around to face the Neo Arcadia Movement grunts. I could see big burn marks on the scales of their backs. Just imagining what the effect damage could have done to me and Goodwin made me cold sweat a bit. These two grunts' psychic powers were extraordinary powerful, even stronger than Aki's powers used to be when she wasn't controlling them.
"First of the Dragons, attack directly with Dragonbreath!" Goodwin continued as if nothing had happened.
First of the Dragons growled as he breathed his fiery attack at our opponents. They shielded their faces once again as they were enveloped by the multi-colored fire.
Nino + Kawasaki: 3400 LP – 700 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 5650 LP
"Sun Dragon Inti, end the Duel with Sunlight Blaster!"
The sun dragon growled before the sun stone fired a fiery beam at the two minions. Nino and Kawasaki were engulfed by the fire as they screamed in terror. Goodwin and I watched the scene unfold until the attack was over with the duo collapsed to the ground.
Nino + Kawasaki: 700 LP – 0 LP
Estelle + Goodwin: 5650 LP
Nino and Kawasaki were lying on the concrete, so I rushed to them to see if they were okay. Both of them were unconscious, so I suspected they had knocked their heads on the hard ground after Hot Red Dragon Archfiend had attacked them.
It was then I heard the sirens from patrol cars in the distance. I looked up and saw a big squad of Sector Security vehicles and Duel Runners coming toward us. They must have been informed about the Tag Duel from terrified citizens. I also spotted a couple of ambulances, so Nino and Kawasaki were going to receive medical attention.
I just hoped they didn't get hurt badly because we needed information about Sayer's resurrected organization; Neo Arcadia Movement.
XXXXXXXXXX – Luna's POV
I was a bit on the edge now after Sly's kidnapping. Estelle had sent a message to our group chat, nicknamed "Signers & Co.", that she and Goodwin encountered two grunts from the revived Arcadia Movement. They managed to defeat the grunts, but the bad guys ended up unconscious after the Tag Duel, so Sector Security had no new information about Neo Arcadia Movement.
I was so worried about Sly, and scared too. I still remembered the day when Leo, Tanner, Yanagi, and I were tricked by Sayer and he hurt my brother with his psychic powers in a Duel.
That psychopathic man was very dangerous and scary. Was he treating Sly like a mindless soldier like at the time he took control over Aki in the Shadow Duel against Misty? I prayed deeply that Sly was doing okay and tried his best to run away from his father's grasp.
"Luna…? Luna!"
I snapped my head up after realizing I had almost dozed off. I rubbed my eyelids before turning to Leo, Dexter, and Miyuki who were standing next to my desk, all three of them carrying their school bags.
"Huh…? What's wrong, Leo? You're being so loud", I mumbled softly.
"The school has ended, Luna", Miyuki said.
"You fell asleep after Ms. Bartlet called you out to solve the math quiz", Dexter explained.
"You okay, Luna?" Leo asked, concerned. "You've been looking so tired lately."
"I'm fine…", I covered my mouth to hide a yawn before grabbing my school bag.
"You don't look fine", Dexter stated.
"Is it…about Sly?" Miyuki asked.
I stopped packing my books into the school bag when I heard that question. I stayed silent for a few seconds before nodding. "Yeah…"
"He's been missing for almost a week now", Dexter sighed. "I hope he's okay."
"I may not have liked him that much, but he's still our classmate", Leo said as he rested his hands on the hips.
I nodded slowly as I continued packing the school bag. Because the missing case was still active, Estelle had the follow the policy within Sector Security, so she couldn't tell me, Leo, and the other Signers everything about the ongoing investigation. All our friends knew was Sly had been kidnapped.
I looked up when I felt a hand on my shoulder. Miyuki was smiling softly at me. "Luna… I know Sly is okay. He is…a very headstrong boy."
"You don't say…", Leo muttered underneath his breath.
"Hey, speaking of, have you guys heard about the Cursed Spirit Forest?" Dexter brought up a new topic.
"The Cursed Spirit Forest?" my brother, Miyuki, and I repeated simultaneously.
Dexter nodded, "There's been a rumor about a forest outskirts of New Domino City. People have wandered into the forest, but no one has ever seen them again. Friends and families have searched for their missing loved ones, but they either ended up getting injured or lost into the woods. Some say there's a dark spirit resting there and it feeds on the people's souls-"
"STOP!" Leo cried out as he covered his ears in fear. "I don't want to hear it!"
The three of us stared at Leo in surprise as he crouched down on the floor, covering his ears while shaking like a leaf.
"Leo… Are you perhaps…scared of ghosts?" Miyuki asked shyly as she stood behind me.
"Huh? No! No, I'm not scared at all!" Leo laughed sheepishly as he quickly straightened up, rubbing the back of his head. "I… I'm just worried that Luna might get scared by ghost stories!"
I held back the urge to roll my eyes. "I'm fine, Leo."
"Anyway, I was thinking that perhaps those stories are fake and maybe Sly's kidnapper is there", Dexter explained. "The rumors began surfacing just recently."
Leo and I exchanged a glance. Dexter could have a point there. Ghosts and spirits couldn't exist in the mortal world, unless someone was using psychic powers to make Duel Monsters card effects real…
What if Sayer's hideout was in the forest?!
"Let's go then!" Leo declared.
"Huh?!" the rest of us gaped at him in surprise.
XXXXXXXXXX
It was a bright and sunny day today, but as soon as we approached the rumored forest, we were immediately met by a dark forest. Crows cried from the trees and scared the wits out of Leo when they flew past us. They looked like shadows in the thin fog. The whole place smelled pretty damp and rotten too, like a swamp.
"P-Perhaps this was a bad idea!" Leo stuttered in fear.
"You were the one who said we should go exploring, Leo", Dexter pointed out before his lips turned into a smirk. "Don't tell me…you're afraid, are you?"
"I-I'm so not afraid!" Leo retorted. "I'm only hoping that Luna isn't scared, y'see!"
"I'm fine", I said.
"Then, so am I!" Leo smiled widely.
Miyuki whimpered as she hid behind me, holding onto my school bag. "B-But I'm scared… Perhaps this was a bad idea…"
"Don't worry, Miyuki!" Leo called as he dashed to her side and grabbed one of her hands. "I'm here to protect both you and Luna!"
I saw how hard Miyuki was blushing at the close contact. I had known for quite some time now how she had a crush on my brother. I wouldn't mind if she became Leo's girlfriend, but my brother was so dense that he couldn't see Miyuki's affections toward him. All he had in his mind was Duel Monsters.
We decided to look around for ten minutes and if we didn't find any clues about human presence in the forest, we would head back to the city.
Dexter walked first as Leo and Miyuki walked behind him. Leo was still shaking a bit, but he had never let go of Miyuki's hand. Miyuki was pretty quiet and had her eyes downward, trying to avoid eye contact with my brother as her cheeks were still a bit red.
I walked last as I looked around, making sure not to get my brother and friends out of my sight. A small black shadow rushed past me and very close that I almost felt its body against my hand. I jumped back a bit and watched the tiny shadow head deeper into the forest.
"What was that…?" I mumbled to myself. "I could have sworn I sensed something weird from that thing…"
It was then I realized I was all alone! Because of the distraction, I had been left behind! And the fog was suddenly getting thicker!
"Leo! Dexter! Miyuki!" I yelled as I stayed on the spot, knowing it would only get worse if I wandered deeper into the forest. "Where are you, guys?!"
I usually wasn't an easy person to get scared, but my heart was starting to pound faster in fear. I knew ghosts and spirits weren't real, but if this was Sayer's doing, then I was in big trouble!
"Kuri kuri!"
I snapped my head to the left and saw Kuribon's spirit floating next to me. She was looking really scared and whimpered softly.
"Kuribon? What is it?" I asked, concerned.
Regulus' spirit appeared next to Kuribon. "We sense a dark powerful force coming from the forest, and it's getting closer, Luna. You have to go back now!"
Just as he said that, an ominous wind blew around us. It had some kind of power that pushed the two Duel Spirits back to the Spirit World, leaving me all alone again. As soon as the wind calmed down, I opened my eyes and saw the fog had almost vanished, but it got darker as if the trees were purposely leaning in to block the sunlight.
I turned around as I heard light footsteps coming from the shadows. "Leo? Is that you? Dexter? Miyuki?"
I took a few steps back and raised my fists up. Estelle had taught me and Leo a few tricks of self-defense before, so I could hopefully beat down the stranger enough for me to then run away.
I saw a small shadow step through the fog as it slowly cleared up. The shadow was as big as Leo and Dexter, so I thought it was one of them. "Leo! Dexter! You found me!"
The fog cleared up, only to reveal someone I didn't expect to meet here.
"Sly!" I exclaimed in surprise and joy while lowering my fists. "You're safe! Leo, our friends and I were so worried about you!" I was about to run to him and give him a big hug, but two things stopped me.
One; Sly's eyes were hazy as if he was hypnotized.
Two; he was wearing a child-version of the Arcadia Movement outfit, the middle pattern having a dark purple color. His Duel Disk was black and purple and had a similar design as the ones the Dark Signers had used before.

"What…?" I mumbled in disbelief as Sly activated his Duel Disk. "But, Sly-"
"Duel me, Signer, if you wish to rescue your friend!" Sly demanded as the aura grew violent around him.
It must be the aura that was controlling Sly and/or Sayer had done something else to him. I held back a growl as I removed my school bag to grab the Duel Academy Duel Disk. I strapped it on my left arm before inserting my Deck that got shuffled by the device.
