Ch. 66- The Warning

Author's Note: Okay, I really don't have a good excuse except... life and a severe lack of motivation, plus some other things. I thought that with One Piece going the way it was, my stories would never be able to measure up and I wouldn't be able to make them sense, anymore... but after a while and some words from a friend, I decided "Hey, you know what? No matter what, it's still One Piece, even if it does change".

So... here's the newest chapter of The Fire Within. Can I promise that I'll be able to update regularly? I can't really say for sure... but I will see this through to the end. I hope you'll all be patient enough... but if not, that's okay, too.

I'll just be glad that I'll be able to keep writing this.

"Okay," Nami said, growing more and more nervous ever since she saw the ship's graveyard. "Is anybody else kinda starting to freak out, now, or is it just me?"

"No, I'm kinda starting to freak out, too," Usopp replied.

"That really big galleon," said Zoro. "The one with the red arrows behind the skull... it looked like the oldest one out of all those ships."

"You're right," Robin said. "The question is... what was it doing there?"

"And what are all those other ships doing there, too?" Sanji asked.

"...I don't think I like where this is going," Aika said, worriedly. "When I looked at that really big ship... it was like... I dunno... it was like seeing a ghost or something."

"Oh, don't say ghost," Kumi muttered, fearfully. "I'm already scared enough, as is!"

"But still... what is this place?" Aika asked. "It's so full of sorrow and evil... and it makes me sick...!"

"I'm afraid there's only one way to know," Brook said, "and that's to keep watching."

As soon as he said this, the memory returned, showing Past Luffy and Past Chopper spitting up water.

"Ugh... I thought I was a goner..." Past Luffy groaned.

"Thanks for saving me, Luffy..." Past Chopper said, hoarsely.

"Nah... don't worry about it," Past Luffy replied.

"Hey, I'm the one who saved you guys!" Past Sanji pointed out.

"Hey, Sanji," said Past Nami. "What were you doing in the water in the first place?"

"Err... well..." Past Sanji muttered, smiling meekly while Muchigoro was heard sobbing as he sat on his knees beside the Baron, who glared at the crew.

"At any rate, you guys," Past Luffy said as he stood up, his usual cocky grin on his face as he gripped the rim of his hat, "this means... we win!"

"WE WIN!" the Past Straw Hats cheered. However, they didn't seem to notice that the Baron was glaring at them... bitterly... almost hatefully. Aika's eyes widened as she stared at the man, a sickening feeling twisting in her stomach.

"The Baron," she said. "He looks... so angry."

"Well, he looked angry before, kiddo," said Franky.

"No, I mean really angry," Aika said. "The way he's looking at all of you... it's like... he's jealous."

"Jealous?" Chopper repeated.

"Why would he be jealous of us?" asked Sanji.

"I don't know," Aika answered, sadly. "I just can't help but think that something might have happened to him... something that made him like this."

"Like what?" Blizzard asked.

"I'm not sure," Aika replied.

"Hmm..." Robin hummed, thoughtfully.

"You have an idea, Robin?" asked Nami.

"Just theorizing for right now," Robin answered.

"HOLD IT!" shouted the Baron, causing the Past Straw Hats to look back at him. "The contest is not over yet!"

"But we just finished it," Past Zoro countered.

"You must undertake the next Ordeal of Hell!" the Baron declared. "I will not allow this travesty to go unpunished! You will pay for making Muchigoro cry!"

"Talk about a sore loser," Franky muttered.

"Yeah, tell me about it," Sanji agreed.

"Hold on a minute!" Past Nami shouted. "You didn't say anything about this!"

"Yeah, the guy lost," Past Zoro agreed. "Just accept it."

"Silence!" barked the Baron. "The matter is not yet settled! You will do as I order you to do!"

"What the hell are you talking about?" asked Past Sanji, now bored and irritated by the Baron's tone.

"You're taking this sore loser thing a little too far," Past Usopp added.

"Another ordeal, huh?!" Past Luffy asked, excitedly. "Sounds like fun! Count us in!"

Unfortunately, the others didn't agree with his plan, and the memory soon faded right there.

"Well, that was weird," Sanji said.

"Not to mention scary," Aika added. "Especially after seeing all those sunken ships."

"...Maybe it's just me," Robin began, "but I can't help thinking that the Baron is hiding something."

"You might be right about that, Robin," Zoro concurred.

"There's still something I don't understand," Nami said. "What happened here that made us lose our memories of this place?"

Before anyone could offer a response, the memories returned, this time showing the Past Straw Hats wandering through the jungle with Past Nami leading them and holding a map. However, judging by the look of frustration on the navigator's face and how much everyone was arguing about how to leave the island, it seemed that the group had had no success in finding a way out. Past Luffy was insistent on doing the next ordeal, but no one was even listening to him at this point.

"This is strange," Brook said. "It's not like you to get lost, Nami."

"Ugh... suddenly, I feel like Zoro," Nami groaned.

"I heard that," Zoro groused.

"But still," Robin began, "Nami shouldn't have that much trouble finding the way back to shore."

"Why do you think that is, Nami?" asked Blizzard.

"I wouldn't know," Nami replied.

"You know, call me crazy," Sanji began, "but maybe... something on this island was trying to prevent us from leaving."

"I don't know why, but somehow, I can't help but think that that makes sense," Robin concurred.

Soon, after wandering around for several more minutes, somehow, the Past Straw Hats found themselves standing before a stage in the middle of the jungle, and sure enough, there was the Baron, who laughed almost mockingly at them.

"I've been expecting you, courageous pirates!" he declared.

"Oh, Flower Pops!" Past Luffy exclaimed.

"That's creepy, how he showed up like that," Aika said, holding her arm nervously. "It's like he knew that you guys would get lost."

"Yeah, that is weird," Kumi replied, just as disturbed as she was.

"What I wanna know is who would go putting a stage in the middle of the freaking jungle!" Blizzard added.

"W-what?!" Past Nami stuttered in shock and disbelief. "How did you-?!"

"We don't get to enjoy our vacation," Past Sanji sighed in dismay.

"And we can't get off this island," Past Zoro grumbled in irritation.

"I suppose the only thing to do is..." Past Robin started to say with her usual amused smile.

"The Ordeal of Hell!" Past Luffy exclaimed in excitement.

"Part two!" the Baron announced as lights flashed on the stage and the same dancers with the feather fans appeared. "Ladies and gentlemen, I shall now announce the next ordeal: the Ring Toss!"

"Ring Toss?" Franky repeated. "Is this guy serious?"

"Remember what happened with Goldfish Catching?" Robin pointed out.

"Oh, yeah..." Franky recalled.

"Each team has two boats with two people on-board!" the Baron explained. "The first team to ensnare all their opponents in rings wins! Now, let me introduce my confidants, the Four Wise Men!"

Soon, four pillars arose, revealing the Wise Men... which were really just a family of four frog-like people. Not only that, but one of them was a female.

"Wait a minute," said Chopper. "How can they be the Four Wise Men if one of them is a lady?"

"Talk about misleading," Brook added.

"They don't even look like men," said Blizzard. "They look like frogs to me."

"You have the leader, Keroji!" the Baron announced, causing the crowd to cheer. "The main striker, Keroshot! The repair extraordinaire, Kerodeek! And finally, the youngest, as well as the only female, Keroko!"

Soon after the introductions, Keroko and Past Nami began to exchange insults to each other, and while Past Nami didn't really deny the fact that she had a bit of a temper, she still didn't take the insults lightly. She even pushed Past Luffy out of the way when she insisted on taking on the ordeal. Soon, she decided to enter the competition with Past Usopp as her partner. Zoro and Sanji ended up playing on another team, leaving Past Luffy, Past Chopper, and Past Robin by themselves.

"What do you mean, I can't join this time?!" asked Past Luffy.

"Sorry, but no Devil Fruit users allowed in this ordeal," Baron said. "But please, do enjoy your stay!"

"It's probably for the best," Franky said. "Luffy would just fall overboard, anyway!"

"And Chopper, too," Usopp added.

"Hey! I'm not that bad, am I?!" Chopper asked.

"I gotta admit, though," Zoro began, "Nami, I know you can have a bit of a bad temper, but don't you think you went just a little too far, hitting Luffy in the face like that?"

"Now that I look at it," Nami began, "I guess I did hit him a little too hard, there."

Soon, Past Robin and Past Chopper wandered off to do who knows what, leaving Past Luffy to stand alone in the middle of the resort. The captain was a bit dismayed at not being able to play ring toss with the others, but Past Robin reassured him that it was for the best. As Past Luffy just stood there, staring, a rock suddenly hit his head, but he didn't seem to notice due to his rubber body.

"Hey, did you see that?" Aika asked. "Someone threw a rock!"

"Where'd it come from?" Zoro asked, and suddenly, another rock hit Past Luffy in the head, this one being a bit bigger than the last. It wasn't really big enough to do any damage (not that it could), but that time, Past Luffy actually did feel it as he rubbed at his head.

"What was that?" he asked as he looked around, only for another rock, this one even bigger than the last, to hit him on the head, causing him to look around again. "Huh? What hit me?"

"Who keeps throwing rocks at him?" Franky asked, just as another one, one that was about as big as Past Luffy's head, hit the rubber boy right smack in his skull, causing him to cry out as he looked around, finally getting irritated.

"Alright, who keeps doing that?!" Past Luffy questioned. "Where are you?! Come out and show yourself!"

"Look!" Nami exclaimed as she pointed to a shadowy figure behind Past Luffy, holding a much larger and heavier rock this time, but by then, the Straw Hat Captain finally noticed him.

"Aha! There you are!" Past Luffy exclaimed, causing the stranger to yelp as he dropped the rock and fled, but Past Luffy was soon hot on his tail. "Hold it! Get back here!"

Soon, he chased the mysterious person throughout the resort, running through a maze of hallways, passages, corridors, and stairways.

"...I feel like I'm watching a cartoon," Nami said.

"Yeah, all that's missing is the silly music," Usopp added.

"Yohohohoho!" Brook laughed.

Soon, Past Luffy and the strange man soon found themselves standing across from each other in a room with a large circular pool in the middle. It was then that the crew finally got a good look at the mysterious man: he was short and stocky with a toothbrush mustache under his nose, and he was wearing what could only be described as a stereotypical explorer's outfit, complete with a safari helmet.

"Hey, wait a second!" Sanji exclaimed. "We met that guy!"

"You did?" Franky asked.

"Oh, yeah!" Usopp exclaimed. "What was his name, again? I think it was Brief, wasn't it?"

"Yeah, it's Brief!" Chopper agreed.

"Wait a minute," said Aika. "You said you don't remember what happened on this island."

"That's true, we don't," Robin said, "but we remember Brief, clearly. We saw him, along with a few other people, sitting around Luffy, who was injured at the time."

"Yeah, that's right," Zoro concurred. "But I still don't remember what happened before then."

"Well, this is only getting more confusing the more this goes on!" Blizzard replied.

"Well, this is Luffy's memory, after all," Sanji said. "The only thing we can do is keep watching and fill in the blanks as we go."

"Who the hell are you?!" Past Luffy questioned. "What the hell are you doing?!"

"I'm glad that you could join me," Brief answered.

"That doesn't really answer the question," Aika pointed out.

"I braved many dangers to reach this place and make you a wonderful proposal," Brief offered.

"Huh? Many dangers?" Past Luffy repeated.

"Permit me to introduce myself!" Brief announced. "I am Brief, Captain of the Toothbrush Mustache Pirates!"

"Toothbrush Mustache Pirates?" asked Franky, incredulously. "Please tell me this guy isn't for real."

"I think he is," Zoro muttered.

"That has got to be one of the lamest names for a pirate crew that I've ever heard," Blizzard groaned.

"Yeah, I agree with that..." Kumi whined, her ears lowering in disdain.

"I am a brave man who has organized a resistance movement against Baron Omatsuri's tyranny!" Brief declared.

"Tyranny?" Usopp repeated. "What is he talking about?"

"Yeah, aside from the wacky ordeals, this just looked like a regular resort to me," Nami said.

"No... he's right," Aika said. "Remember what I said? That this island seems off?"

"Aika's right," Robin said. "She, out of all of us, knows better than to be fooled by appearances since she's usually so in tune with people's feelings. If she's able to see right through the Baron, then obviously that means that something's not right... and frankly, I feel the same." She then put a hand to her chin in thought. "Now that I think about it... I think I do recall something about this place. I remember wandering around, wanting to find information..."

"What did you find?" asked Zoro.

"Hmm..." Robin hummed before shaking her head. "Sorry... it's still a bit of a blur to me. It might come to me, though."

"Hey," Past Luffy spoke up. "You got some snot hanging from your nose. You should wipe it."

"This is my toothbrush mustache, you fool!" Brief shouted. "In fact, we actually have a special greeting among our crew. Watch this!" He then put his finger under his nose. "Mustache!"

"That just looks like he's sniffing it," Brook pointed out.

"The pirate world sure is full of weirdos," Franky muttered.

"You're one to talk, Franky," Nami snarked.

"Well, since you put it that way!" Franky grinned.

"That's not really a compliment!" Nami added.

"Well? Don't you wanna try it out?" asked Brief, but Past Luffy wasn't convinced.

"What do you want, anyway?" he asked, getting straight to the point for once.

"Ah, yes, that's right!" Brief remembered. "You have six crewmates with you, don't you?"

"Yeah," Past Luffy answered.

"I watched them, along with you," Brief said. "You make a very superb team."

"Shishishi!" Past Luffy chuckled, proudly. "Thanks, mister!"

"And they are very wonderful friends, too," Brief added.

"Well, duh!" Past Luffy replied. "Of course, they are! They wouldn't be part of my crew otherwise!"

"Aww, Luffy!" Nami cooed while the other Straw Hats smiled, touched by the fact that he was always so proud of them.

"Your teamwork is practically perfect," Brief pointed out.

"Ha! That's nothing!" Past Luffy declared with his hands on his hips.

"That's the thing," said Brief. "Listen to me. Will you join me?"

"Wait, what?" Past Luffy asked, taken back by the question.

"Yeah, what?" Usopp asked, just as bewildered.

"Will join the Toothbrush Mustache Pirates?" asked Brief... but he got no answer. "Hey! Didn't you hear me? I said, I want you to-"

Before he could finish, Past Luffy stretched his arm and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, then pulled him closer across the pool before he was standing in front of him.

"Wait! Please! No violence!" Brief pleaded.

"No way," said Past Luffy with his usual serious look. "Why would we wanna join you?"

"Heheh," Brief chuckled. "You're not the first to have that attitude... but trust me, the longer you and your crew stay on this land, the sooner you'll take my offer! Listen very carefully... your friends are in grave danger if you don't join me. Watch out for the Baron... he'll tear your crew apart before you know it."

Past Luffy blinked at Brief while the Straw Hats glanced at each other, wondering what he meant by that, and before they knew it, the memory ended right there.

"What did he mean by that?" Sanji asked.

"Tear us apart...?" Nami whispered, growing even more worried and nervous.

"I don't like the sound of this," Aika said, her suspicions mounting more and more. "What did he mean by that?"

"I don't know," Zoro began, "but I think we're about to find out."

Soon, the memories returned. It was sunset by now, and the sky was growing dark. The Past Straw Hats were standing around outside the resort... but for some reason, Past Chopper wasn't there. Not only that, but something was different among the remaining members, which caused Aika to shudder as she stepped back, holding her stomach. As for the rest of the Straw Hats, they hadn't seen tension like this since what happened in Water 7, after Usopp left.

Past Zoro and Past Sanji were glaring bitterly at each other, something that instantly told the Straw Hats that something was wrong. Sure, the two would bicker now and then, but they still got along... but this? It was like two sworn enemies staring each other down, almost hatefully at each other. It almost felt as if the two were getting ready to kill each other if one looked at the other the wrong way.

Past Nami and Past Usopp weren't much better, themselves. For some reason, whenever Past Usopp even tried to open his mouth, Past Nami would either ignore or just snap at him without provocation, telling him to shut his mouth. Not only that, but the navigator gave him a piercing glare, too, and that made the Straw Hats even more nervous. Sure, Nami would get mad, but she never got THIS angry, especially at the people she cared about. Past Usopp even went as for to ignore Nami.

"Sheesh..." Franky muttered. "You could cut the tension with a knife!"

"What happened here?" asked Blizzard, worriedly.

As the group kept watching, Aika whimpered as she clutched at her stomach like it was aching.

"Aika, what's the matter, honey?" Robin asked in concern, squatting down beside her and putting a hand on her back as a means of comfort.

"...All this anger...!" Aika answered. "Just watching you guys act like this... it makes me sick!"

"Did something happen between you guys during that last ordeal?" asked Chopper.

"I... I don't really know!" Nami answered. "At least... maybe I..." Suddenly, her eyes went wide as she seemed to recall something... and slowly, her eyes went to surprised to horrified. She then glanced over at Usopp, who was practically wearing the same expression as she was.

"...N... Nami..." Usopp whispered.

"Usopp... did I... did I slap you?" Nami asked, horrified.

"Yeah... I think you did," Usopp answered. "Twice, actually... and now that I think about it... I said something really uncalled for... and I also left you hanging for a bit, too!"

"...Oh, god...!" Nami whispered as she suddenly went up and hugged Usopp, tears threatening to leak out of her eyes. "I'm sorry, Usopp! I'm sorry!"

"If anyone's sorry, it's me!" Usopp replied as he hugged her back.

"Hey, hold up a minute," Sanji said. "I think... I might remember a few things, too."

"Yeah, same here," Zoro agreed. "I think the cook and I were too busy fighting to actually focus on what was happening."

"Yeah," Sanji replied. "I mean... I know that Moss-head and I don't get along, but during that race... it was like the worst in us came out and we just lashed out at each other!"

"So you guys are finally starting to remember what happened here?!" Franky asked.

"Little by little," Zoro answered.

By now, the Past Straw Hats were asking where Past Chopper, which was pretty much Past Usopp was asking the whole time, but no one seemed to hear him, and Past Nami only responded with a harsh "Who the hell asked you, anyway?!"

"C'mon, Nami," Past Usopp said, genuinely hurt by her response. "How long do you plan on staying mad at me?"

"Captain, please do something about this," said Past Robin, actually sounding annoyed for once. "They've been like this for hours, now!"

"They have?" Past Luffy asked, but before anybody could answer him, there was the sound of pounding drums, and as everyone looked up, there was the Baron again... with a smug, mocking grin.

"What's this?" asked the Baron. "I thought that pirate crews got along well!"

"That creep...!" Kumi growled, her fur bristling.

"Spare us your wisecracks," Past Sanji unknowingly agreed.

"Hahahaha!" the Baron laughed. "As you wish. I shall now entertain you all with a private dinner!"

"A private dinner?" Past Nami repeated.

"Tch!" Sanji sucked his teeth. "Knowing him, he probably laced the food with laxative or something."

"What about Chopper, though?" asked Blizzard, realizing that the little reindeer's past counterpart was still nowhere to be seen, and once the Baron appeared, it was like he had been completely forgotten.

Soon, the pool water in front of the group drained, and a metal platform rose from the bottom, along with a tall, stout man wearing a chef's outfit, obviously the Baron's cook. He appeared to be standing on a giant flat grill, too.

"I present to you the iron griddle outdoor restaurant!" the Baron declared as the grill was soon lit on fire with the cook still standing on top of it. It was soon revealed that he was using iron skates to stand on the surface without getting burned. Soon, he began to skate along the grill, spreading what could only be cooking oil.

"So it's like a performance, then?" asked Past Sanji, not at all impressed by this. In fact, he looked even more annoyed than usual.

"He's actually not bad," Brook said.

"Yeah," Sanji replied. "I don't really care for cooks that show off like that... but... even I'm not this annoyed by them."

Soon, the cook was doing several tricks and using his knives to chop up and cook the seafood on the grill. Past Usopp was quick to note how fast he was, but Past Sanji still didn't look interested. However... it was what Past Luffy said next that got to him.

"That looks so yummy!" he exclaimed... and suddenly, the Straw Hat Cook just couldn't hold back, any longer. He shed his jacket, revealing the blue pinstriped underneath, loosened his tie, grabbed a pair of skates, and jumped onto the grill, himself.

"Hey, kid!" the chef shouted, displeased at having someone else on the grill. "You're in the way! Get lost!"

"Luffy," said Past Sanji, ignoring his adversary. "I'm about to make you a shitty meal 100 times better than what this fat-ass is gonna make!"

Sanji's eyes went wide in disbelief at his past self. He never, ever insulted another cook like that, before!

"...What is up with this island?!" Franky asked.

"Yeah! It's like it's bringing out the worst in us!" Usopp agreed.

"...I haven't shown up, yet," said Chopper, still wondering why his past counterpart was still missing.

Soon, Past Sanji was skating around on the grill, stealing the chef's ingredients, and it soon turned into an all-out hockey match. Past Luffy was cheering his cook on, but Past Zoro just watched lazily on a lounge chair before he eventually fell asleep. Not just that, but Past Robin walked away at some point, but no one even noticed where she had gone. Past Usopp and Past Nami were still bickering with each other like children before eventually, the former just stormed off in a huff.

Worst of all, Past Chopper still hadn't shown up during this time, but even now, none of the Past Straw Hats had even acknowledged his absence anymore. It was as if they were so busy being angry at each other, they didn't notice that one of their members was missing... and it actually made the current Straw Hats disgusted with their past selves.

After a while, the cooking battle came to an end, and Past Sanji had made an incredibly huge okonomiyaki.

"Robin... did you see me?" he asked. "I've proven mastery over-" He stopped when he realized she was nowhere to be found. "What the?! She's gone!"

"Way to go, Sanji!" Past Luffy cheered, but the cook obviously showed that he didn't care anymore at that point. When he tried to call to Past Nami, he saw her sitting at a table with Muchigoro, having a drink with him... and that only caused Past Sanji to growl before he walked off the grill in frustration.

"FOOD!" Past Luffy cheered as he leapt into the giant okonomiyaki and began to dig in, only to immediately pop back out with bulging cheeks. "AGH! IT'S HOT!"

The Straw Hats just watched silently, still disgusted by their increasing lack of maturity during this whole ordeal... but it only got worse. Past Zoro attempted to come and eat, but Past Sanji denied him even a single bite, saying that anybody who didn't cheer for him did not deserve to have any food.

"...You didn't really say that, did you, Sanji?!" Nami asked.

"I... I...!" Sanji stammered, unable to come up with any words to say.

"Sanji, you would never, EVER deny anyone food!" Aika cried.

"...What is happening to you all?!" Brook questioned, just as shocked as the others.

As the memory continued, Past Luffy was still stuffing his face for several more minutes... but then, he heard the sound of Past Sanji calling out to him.

"Hey! Luffy!" Past Sanji called. "Quit stuffing your face for a minute! I can't find Robin anywhere!"

"What?!" Past Luffy asked with his mouth full. "What do you mean, Robin's gone?!"

"She said something about going to look for a flower," Past Zoro spoke as he approached the others.

"A flower?" Past Nami repeated. "What kind of flower?"

For some reason, everyone noticed that Past Nami looked rather nervous... actually, she was shaken, like something had spooked her.

"When did she say that?" Past Luffy asked.

"Why the hell would it take her this long to find a stupid flower?!" Past Sanji questioned, though no one could actually tell if him raising his voice was out of worry or anger... or maybe both.

"Hey," Past Luffy said as he looked around. "Where's Usopp?"

"I... I dunno," Past Nami replied as she realized that the sniper was gone, too. "He was here a minute ago!"

"Now Usopp is missing?!" Past Sanji questioned.

"Now that I think about it," Past Zoro began, "where's Chopper? I haven't seen him since that ring toss game!"

"Dammit! DAMMIT!" Past Sanji cursed.

"...I don't like this..." Aika said, growing more and more frightened.

"I got a bad feeling about this," Past Zoro said, actually showing genuine concern for his missing crewmates.

"Oh, don't act like you care all of a sudden!" Past Sanji barked. "I thought I told you to keep an eye on 'em!"

"Hey, I'm not a damn babysitter, okay?!" Past Zoro questioned. "I can't keep tabs on everybody!"

"Three members of our crew just disappear and no one even notices?!" Past Sanji yelled.

"But..." Past Nami started, only to trail off.

"And what about you Luffy?!" Past Sanji asked. "What do you plan on doing about all of this?!"

"W-what do you mean?" Past Luffy asked.

"You're the one who got us into this mess," Past Sanji said.

"Sanji," Past Nami said, trying to stop him.

"You're the one who said we should come here!" Past Sanji snapped.

"Sanji, stop it!" Past Nami urged. "Please, this isn't the time!"

"That's what caused all of this!" Past Sanji yelled as he glared at Past Luffy with bitterness... and it was the next words he said that made everyone's blood run cold.

"Luffy... this is all YOUR fault!"
