The Little Mermaid (Mako Mermaid style)

Chapter Four: Return to Mako

Ariel and Zac were taking a swim, and Ariel began teaching Zac the ways of the merpeople.

"We can make ourselves invisible if we are worried that humans will see us" Ariel explained. She demonstrated by becoming invisible.

"Do you think that I can do that?" Zac asked.

"Probably" Ariel replied. "Concentrate really hard, and think about what you want" Zac closed his eyes and concentrated. Suddenly he faded out of view.

"Awesome" Ariel said, "you did it" Zac faded back into view.

"Cool" He grinned. he turned to Ariel. "I actually wanted to ask you something"

"Go ahead" Ariel said.

"Well, we don't really know how this happened to me" Zac replied. "I was hoping to go back to Mako and try to figure it out, and I was hoping that you would come with me"

"Well, "Ariel sighed, she knew it was time to tell Zac that this had all happened before. "This has happened before, Zac, and I couldn't figure it out then, I don't know if this time will be any different" Zac raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean, this has happened before?" he asked. Ariel sighed.

"It was about five years ago, three girls got trapped in the cave and used the moon pool to swim out. it was the full moon, same as the night you got your tail. I never approached them, I had no need to, but I did keep an eye on them while trying to figure out what happened"

"Well, maybe this time we will" Zac said. Ariel smiled at Zac's determination.

"Ok, I will go with you" she said. Zac grinned. "Come to Rita's when you are ready to go." Zac nodded and they parted ways. Ariel went to see Rita.

"So he wants to go back to the cave and see if he can figure out how he became a merman" Ariel explained to her aunt.

"You know, that might not be a bad idea" Rita said. "The Trident could be on Mako, maybe even in that very cave" Ariel nodded.

"That's what I was thinking, but it's not a full moon tonight, do you think that will affect the entrance of the cave?" Ariel asked. Rita thought for a moment.

"If it does, you should be able to use mermagic to create synthetic moonlight" Rita replied. Ariel nodded.

"I will tell you how it goes" Ariel promised. Later that evening, Zac met up with Ariel and they headed to the beach and then swam towards mako. once on land, Zac looked around.

"Looks pretty spooky, even in daylight" he said. Ariel raised an eyebrow.

"Why do you camp here, then?" she asked. Zac shrugged.

"Well, I never thought that before the weird stuff that changed me" Ariel laughed.

"I guess I can see your point" she said. They walked the way Zac remembered.

"Hey, I think this is the spot" Zac said. Ariel looked around. there was no cave.

"So, where's the cave that you went into?" she asked.

"I don't know" Zac said confused. "Maybe it wasn't here"

"Let me try something" Ariel said. She raised her hands and focused all of her energy. blue moon light appeared from her hands and shone brightly. Suddenly an entrance appeared in what had originally been a huge chunk of rock. Ariel and Zac entered and suddenly the blue light vanished and the cave entrance closed. try as she might, Ariel could not recreate the moonlight, and she had a feeling it was because they were inside a cave and not outside.

"Sorry. I guess I got us into a pretty tight spot" Ariel said, looking around.

"No, it's... it's my fault" Zac replied. "I was the one who wanted to come back here"

"There's no way out" Ariel replied. "What is that?"

"I've seen it before... but it was glowing like this bright light was behind it" Zac explained. "When I touched it, the floor must have opened up and I fell" Suddenly a portal appeared and Zac walked forward. Ariel grabbed his arm and the two of them got sucked in. Where ever they were, it was underwater. Suddenly Ariel gasped.

"The trident" she said. Zac looked and saw a large golden trident floating in the water. Ariel swam forward and grasped the trident with both hands. Thunder clapped and suddenly Ariel and Zac were outside of the cave.

"You found it" Zac said, smiling. "Now you can save your family"

While Ariel and Zac had been searching for the cave on Mako, they were unaware that they were being followed. Cam and Evie had noticed Zac heading to Rita's. when they saw Zac with Ariel they followed the two, until they jumped in the water. Cam and Evie were shocked to see both Ariel and Zac with fish tails and Cam figured they were headed to Mako so they took Cam's boat to Mako. they followed the footsteps until they came to a solid rock wall.

"That's weird, the footsteps stop at this wall" Cam said.

"Well, Well, Well, what do we have here?" a voice from behind them said. They whirled around.

after Ariel and Zac exited the cave, Ariel was excited to finally have the abiity to save her family.

"Not so fast, my darling niece" A voice said, causing shivers down Ariel's spine. Ariel whirled around and pointed the Trident at her aunt.

"Nothing will stop me from saving my family and my home" Ariel said fiercely. Ursula laughed.

"You really think you can use that against me?" she asked.

"Do you want to find out?" Ariel asked. Ursula laughed again.

"In about five minutes you will willingly give me the trident" she replied.

"Over my dead body" Ariel said.

"Hmm, how about over their dead bodies" Ursula snapped her fingers and Evie and Cam appeared bound in ropes.

"NO!" Zac exclaimed. Ariel wanted to refuse, but she knew that Evie and Cam were very important to Zac.

"I'm sorry" she whispered. "I have failed my family" she slowly handed the trident to Ursula and watched as the ropes released the two teens. Ariel expected Ursula to leave, but the witch had one last cruel trick up her sleeve.

"and now, to ensure that you can never return home!" Ursula pointed to trident at Ariel and a blue glow surrounded her. "Now you are human, forever" she vanished and Ariel fell to the ground in tears. Zac knelt beside Ariel and put his arm around her.

"I am so sorry" he said. "I know how much getting that trident meant to you" Ariel just shook her head.

"I couldn't let her hurt your friends" she said.

the trip home was silent, as all four of them traveled back by boat. Ariel didn't speak to anyone and when they reached the shore, she got up and walked home. After Ariel was gone, Zac turned to his friends.

"How did Ursula get you?" he asked. he suspected he already knew but he was hoping he was wrong. Evie cringed under his glare.

"We followed you and Ariel to Mako" she whispered. Zac's eyes narrowed.

"Why?" he asked.

"we were worried about you, mate" Cam said. "You haven't been the same since our camping trip"

"You've been spending a lot of time with Ariel, and we wanted to know why" Evie said. Zac shook his head.

"The bottom line is, I have been helping Ariel try to save her family and she has been helping me try to figure out why I have become a merman" Zac said. "and now, not only has she lost the only object capable of defeating that witch, she has also lost the ability to ever go home. she will never be able to save and see her family again. That is the price she has to pay for saving your lives" with that said, Zac stormed away leaving Cam and Evie feeling really guilty and wondering how they could make it up to both Ariel and Zac.
