I have gotten a few questions in reviews. I will answer one of them here and one in this chapter. I have also gotten other reviews, which I appreciate so much.
First question: Is this a Katherine/Elijah story? This is a bit of a spoiler so if you don't want that skip ahead to the paragraph after the next or just go ahead into the chapter.
So this story obviously focuses on Caroline and Klaus, with some Caroline and Tyler detours because Caroline is being overly considerate to the point of repressing her feelings. Then another major character is Katerina, she is one of this story's namesakes, who will eventually get together with Elijah and stay with him. I hope you like this explanation but didn't want it to be too easy to see for anyone who didn't want spoilers.
The next question: Who is Alvia?
I'll be answering this with a flashback and that will start the chapter.
Please leave any questions that you have, and I will answer them if they don't give too much of the plot away.
Thank you for reading!
Early 999
Esther had gathered Niklaus and Elijah, she needed to speak with them alone. As babes they had been so close despite Elijah's additional years. Now, she had seen them fighting over the same girl for the third time this week. Niklaus had also come home with bruises that, even if not by Elijah, she suspected Tatia was related to. "I need the two of you to stop fighting," she calmly but firmly told the two of her children.
"Yes, mother, may we go now?" Niklaus asked, looking up at her impatiently.
"No, you may not. I have been led to understand that that girl in the village, Tatia, is to blame for the loss of your brotherly compassion."
"Well, if you could simply tell Niklaus to stop bothering her, I am sure we could put our differences aside, mother," Elijah stated, believing he was being magnanimous.
Klaus stared at Elijah, she could tell that she would have to respond quickly to stop another altercation that harmed her precious Niklaus.
"I will. Niklaus, you are not to see Tatia. Elijah, that goes for you as well. In fact, I think I will find some girls for you to marry. I want you to be happy, my sons."
Niklaus and Elijah were so speechless they hardly spoke until supper, then it went along as if they had forgotten entirely.
Summer 999
This time she would speak to her sons one at a time. She had found two wonderful girls that were new to town, they could make her sons remember their love of the area all over again she hoped. "Elijah, I would like to introduce you to your future wife, Alvia Evansdottir. She is new to the village, I am not sure if you have met her yet but I believe you will come to be happy with her which is all I wish for. You will try to like her, won't you?"
"I can try, mother," Elijah stated dryly, not hiding his displeasure of the situation.
2010
"What are you doing, Elijah?" Rebekah broke him from his concentration.
"It appears I was lost in thought. How kind of you to pull me out."
"Well?" Rebekah asked, wanting an answer to a question he did not know the direction of.
"Well… what?"
"Well, what are you thinking about? Honestly, this is not important enough to have a conversation about, my apologies for trying to barge my way into your life. I'll just leave you alone," Rebekah stated petulantly.
As she was leaving, he began responding. Once he began answering, she turned around and sat on the sofa across from him.
"I was thinking about Niklaus' coffins and my coffin."
"Ah, so that is why you were distracted. Thinking about the wife you haven't seen in over nine hundred years," Rebekah realized, speaking to him with a knowing look with implications he didn't want to deal with directly at the moment.
"No. The, we really should name them, Elena and her friends have the coffins. They are no doubt trying to open hers."
"I believe I once overheard Nik calling them the 'Mystic Falls Gang,' but that was entirely sarcastic."
"And if they awaken Alvia?" Elijah asked his sister, for once wanting her opinion.
"Well, I suppose we do have the cure now. I just wonder about her reaction to Caroline."
"I suppose you are right. I will handle it if they open it."
"You're so damn cryptic, 'You'll handle it.' Honestly, why does everyone in this family have so many issues with group planning? We haven't gone all backstabby since we staked Finn a few decades after Alvia."
"Nik still carries around coffins for each of us, you really want me to trust him with plans I don't think he'd appreciate? I suppose you have a greater sense of self-preservation than you think."
"Even Kol knows that he just carries those around as a shield because he doesn't have Kára."
"Still, I'll keep my plans close to my chest for a bit longer."
"Of course, you will," Rebekah answered impatiently.
Elena was meeting up with Bonnie for a get-together with the girls. It was at Caroline's house because Liz would be working late tonight as always and Jenna tried to be 'one of the girls.'
"I think I'll be able to open the mystery coffin on the next full moon," Bonnie told her.
"Any predictions for what's inside?" She asked her oldest friend.
"Someone that Elijah either hates or loves."
"Why not both?" Caroline asked as she entered the room. "But seriously, I have snacks," Caroline told them before showing the evening's snack selection, Caroline's words, not hers.
"How long has it been since we've had a night with just the three of us?" she asked after everyone had grabbed a snack.
"Too long," Caroline responded simply. Bonnie smiled in agreement.
"Why don't we have another one on the full moon? The three of us over a coffin, Bonnie doing witchy things, and Caroline can bring more snacks. And since it's the full moon, you can't use your boyfriend as an excuse."
"Actually, since Tyler isn't bound by the moon since he became a hybrid, we were going to have a full moon appreciation thing."
"Enjoy your date, Caroline. It'll just be Elena and I together like always," Bonnie stated, trying to make Caroline feel a little guilty but not where she would be upset. Caroline rolled her eyes, but she was a bit more hurt than she let on, she could tell.
July 26, 2010
It was the night of the full moon. Caroline was on her way to see Tyler for their 'date.' In all actuality, they hadn't been on any dates, Tyler would suggest something and she would distract him with hybrid-vampire sex. She didn't think that would work tonight though. Who knows, maybe he would still be influenced enough by the moon to be distracted. She should break up with him, she had admitted to herself that she liked Klaus, but hadn't gained the courage to do anything else.
"Caroline! Are you ready for our date?" Tyler looked like a gentleman, sounded like one too. It was odd since he always seemed to rebel against the socialite personality he had to show at his parents' parties.
"Who wouldn't be ready for a date with a man such as yourself? Especially one who looks so handsome tonight."
"I don't know, but not my girlfriend. Not sure why I asked. And, thank you. You always look stunning, I could never tell you enough." God, he sounded like he was in love with her. So Romeo-esque. Anyone that would stab themselves over my thought-to-be dead body should not be with me. At least enact some vengeance first!
She kissed him, he responded with a sweet peck that she attempted to deepen.
"If you keep this up, we won't be going on our date," Tyler stared intensely, meeting her eyes.
"I am insatiable."
"You think that's going to help?"
"I don't want to help, I want you," and as she said it, the lie broke her. She stepped away.
Tyler waited a moment to see if she would explain her sudden change in demeanor. "Caroline, what's wrong?"
"We have to break up," she said emotionlessly, though her eyes betrayed a hint of sadness.
"We don't have to do anything. Caroline, I- … I love you. Please give me one more chance."
"I wish I could, Tyler, but I can't be in a relationship with you."
"You can't? Or you don't want to? I've finally become someone who cares more about the person than sex when you go and do the exact opposite. Is that it?"
"Tyler," she protested.
"What did I do to mess this up? I've done right by you, I haven't betrayed you or cheated on you. I've become a great boyfriend, for you. I need a reason." She could tell that his temper was starting to grow. She needed to get out of here quickly.
"There isn't one, I'm just not in a place where I can be in a committed relationship right now. I hardly see Bonnie and Elena anymore, I just don't want to hurt you by keeping this relationship going on longer than it should. I'll be leaving, I'm sorry, Tyler, truly."
"You're sorry? You break up with me when I tell you that I love you and you're sorry?"
She couldn't respond before Tyler bit her shoulder.
He hadn't meant to, really he hadn't. It was the full moon, he hoped that is what had caused it.
He took a moment before the dread set in, he would have to get Klaus. What if the blood of any hybrid could cure a werewolf bite? His subconscious knew that it wouldn't work, but he would take every opportunity to delay going to Klaus.
So he gave her some of his blood.
