The streets of Japan were nothing short of lively. Life bustled by as people bumped elbows, hurrying to work or home. A group teenagers loitered by a fountain, rushing through the bursts of water with squealing laughs. Cael watched them all through the window of the quaint café she had found herself in. She had decided on wandering the city that morning, to acquaint herself with the area. That was hours ago, and eventually her nose had led her here - a tiny family run cafe that smelled of coffee and cinnamon. Despite the wide open windows, the scent was intoxicating, almost pungent, but Cael adored it.
While placing the orders, she had struck up conversation with the elderly man behind the counter, who was happy to chat with the friendly foreigner, and had even tried to set her up with his grandson- a rather handsome and shy young man whose head was cradled in his palms from embarrassment.
She flicked through the photographs on her camera while she waited for the young man to finish her large order. She had texted Watari wondering about who would be on watch when she got back, and how they took their coffees. The last few days had been tense, to say the least. They were completely convinced that she was only there for L's... Pleasure, Cael grimaced.
They didn't believe her to be qualified at all, and treated her coolly. She wasn't the type to let this bother her, so she decided she'd try smooth things over a little bit. Build a bridge, so to say
The grandson filled the seventh travel cup, apologising for both his grandfather and how long he took with the order with a hesitant smile. Cael grinned back and counted out the full price as well as a hefty tip. "Thank you!" She called out with a wave as she balanced the cardboard carriers in her arms.
The walk to the hotel was short, five minutes at the most. As she pushed into the gaudy lobby, she double checked the drinks. Chai latte for Himura, double espresso for Aizawa, americano with cream and three sugars for Mogi, another americano with six sugars (and a few extra in her pocket) for L, and a mocha for Matsuda. Watari had insisted he didn't want anything - was trying to reduce his caffeine intake apparently.
With a deep breath, she plastered a cheery smile on her face and pushed into the rooms.
She set the cups on the table with a grin, and started passing them out, ignoring how Aizawa suspiciously sniffed the drink before taking a slow sip. The rest nodded their thanks tiredly, and Cael's grin grew. It was a start.
Her brows furrowed as Mogi finished updating her on the case. A lot had happened in the week since L had handed her the Kira case file, it seems. No rest for the wicked, apparently, Cael thought with a smirk, which was quickly wiped away when Aizawa shot her an odd look. The gravity of the situation made her head whirl and with an uncomfortable gulp she turned back to the updated case files. All twelve of the FBI agents L had brought into the country were dead, and L had narrowed down Kira to belonging to two families- the Kitamura's and the Yagami's. The investigation seemed to be drawing to a close soon, so Cael wondered why L hadn't just called her and told her she wasn't needed anymore. She glanced to the detective in question. He was completely engrossed in the domestic comings and goings of Light Yagami - who, yet again, appeared to be studying. Does that boy do anything else when he's at home? Jesus...
Cael shook her head, she'd never understand what went on in an 'intellectual's' mind, whether it be L's or Light's. Which would probably explain why she dropped out of that criminal psychology course a while back.
She paused abruptly, her eyes sliding back up a few lines, to a name that was bolded and underlined in pen, with a question mark scribbled beside it.
Naomi Misora.
Her brows pulled together as she frowned and her gaze snapped up to L, who was already staring evenly back at her. She leaned forwards.
"Ryuzaki," Cael spoke evenly. She could feel evenly, hoping he didn't notice the tremor in her voice. "Has there been any progress in locating Naomi Misora?"
"None so far."
"Its been a week since she went missing, aren't you actively investigating it?" Her brows knitted together.
"I've made some inquiries, but there's been more important matters."
"What inquiries?"
"Well, mainly family, friends, her work, that sort of thing."
"But she said she had important information on Kira, you really aren't doing more to search for her? This could be a major lead!"
"Or it could just be a nosy investigator who realised their information was useless and didn't want to admit it.
I know Misora is a capable investigator, but grief can warp your views, make you see things that simply aren't there."
"So you're just going to disregard a possible lead?"
L gazed at her stoically. It was always difficult to tell what he was thinking. But even if you thought you did know, you were probably wrong. Even when they were younger, L liked to be viewed as an enigma. Cael had always thought it was a part of his detective persona - It seems she thought wrong.
"Alright." She sighed, waving away L's gaze. She'll drop it for now. She already had an idea on where to start her own investigation.
...
"I can't believe even Light reads those magazines." Hearing Matsuda's whisper, Cael leaned back, looking into the monitors, only to choke back laughter. Right in front of his horrified fathers face, Light was flipping through the pages of a porno. She raised a brow, his legs were hooked up in the air behind him and he looked positively bored, as if the activity took precious time out of his day. No one else seemed to notice this oddity, instead seemingly wrestling with whether they should look away or not. L ,however, was completely enraptured - and Yagami was uncomfortably aware. Cael bit into her knuckles, desperately trying to squash down laughter. Shaking her head, she slipped into the next room.
Fanning her warm face, she set to work making a fresh pot of tea. She scooped a pair of battered earbuds from her pocket, stuffing them into her ears. Hearing heavy footsteps behind her, she bopped her head along rhythmically. A throat cleared behind her so she stepped to the side, pouring the the brewed tea into a mug.
Hmm hm.
With a sigh, she plucked the earbuds from her ears, slinging them over her shoulder while turning to on her heel. Aizawa shuffled awkwardly, straightening his tie with a cough.
"Honey?"
"I- what?"
"Honey in your tea? For that cough you have? It sounds pretty nasty." She quirked a brow, a wry smile pulling at her mouth.
"Oh... right," he forced a chuckle. "I actually want to talk to you about something."
She leaned against the counter, nodding at him with an attentive smile.
"I want to apologise for how I acted yesterday. It was unprofessional and uncalled for-"
"I completely forgive you," she said, throwing him a friendly grin. "Everyone's on edge, L, eh-Ryuzaki always seems to have that effect on people." She laughed, and Aizawa joined hesitantly. The two faded into a silence, glancing about awkwardly.
As he turned to leave, Aizawas gaze flicked down, seeing the very loose, unplugged opposite end of the earbuds.
He left with a scowl, Cael grinning sheepishly after him.
"You shouldn't antagonise the officers, Cael."
"Oh come now, Watari, its all in good fun!"
"You're not here to have fun." He fixed her with an amused smile as she flicked her eyes heavenwards.
"Ryuzaki doesn't seem to have gotten the same memo." She watched him as the man typed away on his laptop, lazily plopping a strawberry onto his tongue. His eyes glinted as the code on the screen shifted. He was having the time of life.
Sensing eyes on him, L leaned back to cock his head at them. "Would you like to do something, Cael?" He droned, sweeping a folder from the pile beside him.
She quirked a brow as she approached, nabbing the file and collapsing into a chair, one leg slung over the arm. Her brows hiked as she read through the pages.
"This is Lind L. Tailor's autopsy report, I want you to read it and then carry out your own on one f Kira's victims."
"You want me to compare them?"
"Yes."
"Why don't you do it?"
"Just because I have the physical capabilities to do so, doesn't mean I will particularly enjoy it," he handed her a plate of chocolate cake. "This is your expertise, I know my limitations, and believe you would do a better job of it much quicker."
C flushed- she had gotten her medical degree at the tender age of seventeen and had spent two years working in the morgue under Britain's top forensic pathologist. It was truly fascinating work, and C had adored her co-workers, but she had grown disenchanted with it- the grief families had shown while she explained the report made her uncomfortable. She was very well adjusted to society and the intricacies of human emotion,- more so than some of her siblings- but to comfort these people who had suffered such a loss? It had made her palms sweat and her throat tight. She was much better at working on her own, with very little emotional interaction.
"Alright, sounds like a plan." She grinned cheerily, and he responded with a blank nod, turning his attention back to his laptop.
"Bring Yagami-san and Matsuda-san with you." He announced, catching the aforementioned men's attention. C's brows furrowed, but she nodded.
The drive to the city morgue was tense, she had looped the block thrice just in case they were being followed. From the way L had watched them as they left the room, C had a sneaking suspicion that he had wanted the two officers out of his hair for a few hours.
"So have you two ever seen a dead body?" She asked as she snapped the disposable gloves onto her hands and thanked the lab assistant as the cadaver was wheeled out.
The two men stood stiffly on the opposite side of the room, scrubs over their work clothes. Yagami nodded slowly. Matsuda clenched his jaw, his eyes roving over the room.
"I know it's nerve wracking, but it's really fascinating, and a natural part of death. Autopsies aren't a gross brutalisation of a loved one, like some people believe, but a respectful way of knowing how and why exactly someone died in the way they did. I can explain the process of it all as I go through it, if you would like?"
Yagami's mouth twitched under his moustache, and Matsuda, who was looking rather green, nodded. She smiled.
They emerged from the lab forty-five minutes later, C with a new voice recording, photographs, and lab report, and the two men with their lunch churning in their stomachs. They had done really well, in C's opinion, up until she had turned on the bone saw.
They staggered into C's car, and as she drove she couldn't help but take notice of the Police Chief's attention. "You're very young to be a pathologist."
"My education was a tad more intense than the regular persons." She said with a laugh, watching him from the corner of her eye. "I lived in a boarding school, of sorts, for highly gifted children. By the time I had turned eighteen I had quite a few degrees, and a lot of unfinished ones. I got bored often, you see, I have such a short attention span."
"Light used to be the exact same," Yagami chuckled, the side of his mouth quirking upwards. "He used to soak up information faster than a sponge, but would lose interest if he wasn't constantly stimulated."
"You must be very proud."
"I am, he will be sitting his university entrance exams soon- and I just know he'll blow us all out of the water. He always has." Yagami grinned fondly, the sparkle in his eye returning tenfold.
"What will he be studying?"
"Law." He grinned and she responded in kind.
"It's a tough degree to get through, but I'm sure he'll do wonderfully." She said carefully.
"Thank you." He held her eye for a moment longer than she was comfortable. Her gaze shifted to look in the mirror, her knuckles turning white on the wheel.
"What about you Matsuda, any kids to coo over?"
The young man's head shot up and he shook his head vigorously with an awkward laugh.
"Ah… no. Unfortunately, I live the life of a bachelor."
"Nothing wrong with that! Just means you have more important things to focus on." She threw him a friendly smile in the hope of easing his nerves. He returned it appreciatively.
She parked and waved a goodbye to the men as they parted at the door. Waking around a few blocks, she ducked through the door of a cute little bar and restaurant she had scoped out on her earlier exploration of the city. She collapsed into a booth with a sigh. The place was quaint, very comfortable, but totally dead, with only a handful of other customers.
"Hello! What can I get you tonight?" A young man appeared at her elbow, notepad held loftily.
"Sapporo, please." She said with a smile to the young waiter, waving away the offered menu. The young man inclined his head, and disappeared from view as he ducked into the kitchen.
From her bag, C lifted out her laptop and powered it up. Her gaze drifted to the window. Groups of young adults wandered past the bar, hooting and hollering with all the ego of youth.
A glass clinked onto her table. "Are you enjoying your trip?" Her surprised gaze met soft brown eyes, framed by a mop of auburn tinged hair. The waiter smiled widely.
"You speak English?" She asked, quirking a brow.
"Yes, I'm self taught." He replied as she handed him around 500 yen, waving him off as he went to get change.
"That's very impressive, and for someone so young!"
"I'll be going to university in a few months." He said bashfully.
C eyed the polished nametag across his chest. Raito. "Well, Light, it's still very impressive. And I am enjoying my stay, thank you." Her smile transformed into a smirk as the boy left to serve another customer. Interesting young man, she tapped her nose thoughtfully, bringing up her emails while watching him from the corner of her eye.
