Hybrids
Tenor flew through the fog on his way to Dragon Island. He had just finished a solo night fishing trip. He soon spotted the volcano and went in for landing. He spotted his rider Serenity waiting for him on the balcony adjacent to her and Chris's room. Tenor landed on the balcony.
"Morning Tenor," Serenity said happily.
"Hello," Tenor said, folding his great black wings. "What brings you out here?"
"I was hoping for a morning ride before you head into the arena," said Serenity. Tenor beamed.
"We're doing aerial combat today," he said. "But all right." Serenity go to her feet and went over to the saddle rack at the back of the balcony. She picked up her saddle and put it on Tenor's back. Once everything was secure, she mounted up. Tenor took back off into the fog. He ascended high above the cloud cover.
They soared over the ocean. Tenor flew erratically for a few minuets, then leveled off. Serenity liked spending time alone with him. Tenor was so durable and reliable. He had an instinct to protect. Serenity felt privileged to have him as her dragon. Unfortunately Tenor had many other responsibilities; such as his family, and to the Isle of Berk. Serenity hugged him around his neck.
"I wish we could go flying more often," she said dreamily. Tenor smiled again.
"Yeah, me too," he said. "But like you, the others feel safer having me around." He chuckled. Serenity patted his neck.
By now the fog had lifted and the ocean could be seen. Tenor glided down and skimmed the surface as he turned and headed back towards Dragon Island. Half way there a loud roar came from above, followed by a few bolts of lightning.
"That must our old friend Flash," Tenor said. Serenity looked up to see a titan Skrill flying towards them. His dark grey and purple scales had turned into a shimmering gold.
"He reached titan level," Serenity said. Flash pulled along side them.
"Hey Flash," Tenor said.
"Morning," Flash answered. Lightning crackled along his spines.
"You look great," Serenity said.
"Thanks," said Flash. He followed them to Dragon Island. "Hey Tenor, you think they're other dragon hybrids in the world?"
"I haven't seen any except for Black Widow and myself," Tenor said. "And Edelweiss was born half dragon. It'd be cool if there were though."
The two dragons soon landed on Dragon Island. The other Draconians were waiting near the Red Death skeleton.
"Hello Flash," said Aurora. "Nice to have you back in the neighborhood."
"Thank you my lady," said Flash politely. Edelweiss ran up to the Skrill.
"Hi Flash," she said.
"Hello young Dragonborn," Flash said, nuzzling her. Edelweiss hugged his snout. At that moment Chris went over to Tenor's side. Serenity absentmindedly gripped the front of the saddle tighter.
"How was your morning flight?" Chris asked.
"Too short," Serenity said. "Sometimes I wish we could just keep on going."
"Yeah, I understand that," Chris said. He then helped her down from Tenor's back. Very recently Chris insisted to always help his wife down from her dragon, even though she didn't need it. She slid down into his arms. Tenor walked over to Windwalker and Black Widow. Edelweiss was still scratching Flash behind his horns.
"Well we better get going," Re said. "Hiccup's waiting for us." Chris and Edelweiss mounted their dragons. All the dragons took off except for Flash. Serenity watched them go, her arms wrapped around her torso. Flash came up beside her, and she stroked his snout.
Tenor flew over the ocean after the others. They met up with the Berkians high up in the clouds.
"You're a bit late," Hiccup said.
"Sorry, Serenity and I were on our morning flight and we met up with Flash the Skrill," Tenor explained.
"Well, I plan to have us practice bringing down a hostile dragon without killing it," Hiccup explained.
"I can play the roll of the hostile dragon," Tenor volunteered. The Berkian riders exchanged a glance.
"Um, Tenor You're a hybrid," said Fishlegs. "We've never gone up against a hybrid before."
"Well now's a good time to start then isn't it," Tenor said. "You've all flown in battle with me, you've seen me fight, you know how I work. Shouldn't be too difficult."
"Go ahead Tenor," Hiccup said. "Eret has his ship west of here, we'll give you a head start." Tenor nodded. He then turned and headed west as fast as he could.
The sky was quiet as he looked around for the trapping vessel. But then he got a feeling that he wasn't alone. He looked around, but saw nothing. He flipped over in case someone was above him, there wasn't. So he shrugged and went back to looking for the ship. Soon he spotted it in the open. He flew down and landed on the deck. Skullcrusher was longing in the sun and Eret was steering the ship.
"So you're going to be the hostile dragon?" Eret asked calmly.
"Yeah, should be interesting," said Tenor. "They've fought alongside a hybrid dragon, but never against one." He flexed his wings.
"It'd be cool if there were more hybrid dragons," said Skullcrusher. Just then Tenor heard the other dragons approaching. He smirked and took off. He headed up into the cloud cover.
He circled around and soon spotted the other dragons and riders. They flew in battle formation.
"Okay guys, keep your eyes peeled," Hiccup said. "And stay alert." Fishlegs was fidgeting nervously.
"Um do we know Tenor's attack pattern?" He asked.
"Tenor doesn't have one," said Re. "He does things randomly."
"I'm not so sure this is a good idea," said Fishlegs. "Tenor knows all our dragons' strengths and weaknesses."
"If you're so scared Fishface, why'd you even come?" said Snotlout. Fishlegs glared at him. Suddenly Tenor shot from the sky like a crossbow bolt and slammed into the top of Meatlug at full force. The Gronckle spun out of control, Fishlegs hung on for dear life. They splashed down into the water. Skullcrusher took off from the ship to retrieve them. Tenor headed back up into the clouds.
"After him," Hiccup ordered. They all headed after Tenor, and split up. They all tried to take him down, but he managed to evade them. Then one by one he managed to throw them into the water. Soon the only ones remaining were the two Night Furies, and the dragonets.
"We'll have to team up cousin," Toothless said to Windwalker. She looked surprised, no one called her cousin.
"What did you have in mind?" She asked. The two of them coordinated a plan, Chris relayed it to Hiccup. They all agreed and headed into the clouds. They stayed within sight of each other as using sonar would give them away to Tenor. They soon spotted him. Then, before he realized they were there, they shot forward and sandwiched him between them. Tenor roared in outrage, but then Hiccup fired a bola with his shield and it bound his jaws. He struggled but he was squashed pretty tight, his wings were pinned to his sides. All three dragons headed for the water below. Tenor struggled but it was hopeless. But then he spotted the line that connected Hiccup's stirrup to the tail fin. Thinking fast he used his back talons to cut the line. This caused the red tail fin to close and Toothless lost control. Once his wings were free Tenor took off again, cutting Windwalker's saddle straps as he passed. Toothless was now down and Windwalker was delayed. Tenor vanished into the clouds again. The younger dragons were circling.
"Looks like is up to us now," said Avalon.
"I think I know how to take him down," Edelweiss said. "It'll be crazy." She ran her idea through her friends. They all agreed and split up. Edelweiss and Black Widow sped after Tenor. Black Widow used her sonar and soon found him below her. She dived silently and crashed into his tail. Tenor roared in surprise. Edelweiss jumped on his tail fins, and hung on with all her might. Black Widow took off and started dive bombing Tenor's head. This distracted him from Edelweiss. She grabbed his left tail fin and pinned it closed. Tenor suddenly found himself falling towards the water again. He tried to throw Edelweiss off his tail, but it was very difficult. She had a strong grip and the younger dragons were not all dive bombing him. Tenor could do nothing but roar and struggle as he fell towards the water. The other riders and dragons watched from Eret's ship. Tenor soon splashed down into the water, defeated. Everyone on the deck cheered. Skullcrusher retrieved Tenor from the water and set him down on the deck Edelweiss and her friends joined them.
"Well Tenor, downed by children," Snotlout boasted. "That can't feel good." He laughed. Tenor glared, then slammed his tail into Snotlout's leg knocking him over.
"Yeah, children could take me down," Tenor boasted back. "How come you couldn't?" Snotlout glared.
"Nice job Edelweiss," Hiccup said. "Going for the fins, that was smart."
"I got the idea from you Hiccup," said Edelweiss. "Whenever Toothless's tail fin closes he becomes unbalanced and falls." She looked at Tenor. "I hope I didn't hurt you too bad."
"Don't worry about it Edel," Tenor said. "It was pretty clever. I'm surprised no one's tried that on me before. However it won't work so easily next time. I'm a very adaptive fighter." He sat down. Eret turned the ship back towards Berk. All the dragons rested on the deck. Stormfly, Meatlug, and Hookfang all had a dislocated wing. Aurora summoned a great wind that blew into the sails and sent them speeding towards Berk and Dragon Island. They were unknowingly being watched the whole time by a pair of giant icy blue eyes.
