Chapter 7: Plastered Hearts
Jane opened the front door to their house for Maura then moved out of her way so she, her fractured ankle and crutches could all get through the door.
Jane put Maura's purse and heels down on the table near the entrance then watched as Maura made her way to the couch.
There was no delicate way for her to sit so she just kind of flopped down. Jane took off the hospital issued shoe they gave Maura, then carefully lifted both her legs up onto the couch. She then took one of the throw pillows and gingerly lifted Maura's ankle with the cast and slid the pillow under it before setting it back down.
"Do you need anything?" Jane asked her.
"Can I have some water and the remote please?"
Jane handed her the remote then went to get her a glass of water. She put the glass down on a coaster on the coffee table close to Maura then sat down on the couch by her feet.
"I told you those heels would get you into trouble." Jane told her as Maura flipped through the channels on the TV.
"I thought you meant I'd get hit on more not fracture my ankle slipping in fluid on the floor of my morgue." Maura said to her, "I'm surprised I don't have more injuries."
Jane got up from the couch and went into the kitchen, "A fractured ankle and a mild concussion aren't enough for you?" She asked as she dug through a couple of the drawers before coming back to sit down by Maura's feet.
Maura settled on a movie and was so focused on it she didn't see what Jane had been doing.
She had pulled out two Sharpie pens, a red and black one and was using them to draw on her cast. A few strands of Jane's hair brushed against Maura's exposed toes and made her jump.
She looked at Jane, "What are you doing?"
"Huh? What, nothing." Jane said as she capped the red Sharpie.
Maura sat up a little and looked down at her cast, "Did you do something to my cast?"
"I might have." Jane told her.
Maura lifted her leg slightly, "Are those hearts? Did you draw hearts on me?"
Jane gave Maura her best dimpled smile as she admired her handiwork. There were hearts of all sizes on her cast, some had faces, some with an arrow through them, and Maura was pretty sure one had sunglasses and a badge and it seemed to be holding hands with another heart that was wearing high heels.
"What do you think?" Jane asked.
Maura gave it some thought then looked up at her and smiled, "I love it."
Jane gave her a kiss then sat back on the couch and Maura just admired her very proud of herself girlfriend.
