Chapter 8: Time
Jane rolled on to her side and punched at her pillow a few times before resting her head on it. She kicked at her blanket as she tried freeing her foot from under it. Once free, she wiggled her toes then stopped when she realized she was probably teasing the monster under her bed.
She let out a sigh then threw her covers off her and rolled onto her back. She stared at the ceiling in frustration.
She grabbed her phone from the nightstand and called Maura.
"Jane? Is everything okay?" Maura asked sleepily.
"I can't sleep." Jane said to her.
"Why not?"
"Because I can't get comfortable, because it's too hot and cold, because I probably had too much coffee, because I have three cases I'm working through in my head at once." Jane rambled.
"Jane, why can't you sleep?" Maura asked again. She knew Jane all too well.
Jane sighed over the phone, "Because you're in Paris and not here with me."
"You know if I could be…."
Jane cut her off, "I know. I know your dad is sick and you want to be with him while he gets better."
There was a pause.
"I just miss you."
"And I miss you." Maura told her then yawned.
"Is my little crisis boring you?" Jane asked.
"No not at all." Maura told her, "Would you like me to read to you from one of my scientific journals? That should put you to sleep."
"I guess." Jane said as she covered herself back up.
"Okay." Maura said then Jane heard some rustling on the phone before she began to read to her about molecular biology.
In the morning Jane woke up and stretched in bed before searching for her phone. She found it on the floor and picked it up. When she checked it there was a text from Maura. 'I hope you slept well. I'll be home soon.'
Jane checked her phone log to see how long they were on the phone for last night. 2 hours. Then she noticed the time stamp of when she made the call and did the math.
She counted on her fingers then texted Maura, 'I'm sorry I called you at 4:08 in the morning and woke you up.'
'You can wake me any time and for anything.'
Jane smiled; she honestly didn't know how she managed to get so lucky.
'I might take you up on that.'
'I look forward to it. Love you, Jane.'
'Love you more.'
