I think the best PM I got about the last chapter was on how I wrote Ironwood wrong and that his reaction should have been to shoot everyone in the room XD
"No no no, the best part was his face!" Glynda then burst out laughing. "He was just so confused!" She, Ozpin, and Jaune were back in the headmaster's office, going over a job well done.
"Yes, a shame no one had a camera at the time," Ozpin said. "Still, great work, you too Jaune."
"Arf!"
"Now then, as promised, Jaune, every assignment you get for the next 7 days will automatically get top marks, no work needed."
"Woof," his tail wagged.
"Except for my combat class," Glynda said. Jaune's tail stopped wagging. "No, don't you dare give me that look." Jaune continued to give her the look. Glynda turned her head away to resist… but still gave in and gave him some ear scratches. "Ok, maybe I'll only call on you once or twice."
"Arf!"
Ozpin chuckled. "And before I forget, Glynda," Ozpin pulled out the brown folder Ironwood gave him before he left. Jaune was wondering what that was. "As bargained, 10%." He then took out 2,000 lien and handed it to Glynda.
Wait… this game had a money prize? Why didn't they say so?! Jaune walked up next to and sat next to Ozpin, tail wagging at his expected share of the profits. Ozpin instead put it away.
"...Aro?"
"Our deal was you do this for grades, not for money. Should you have rejected the offer for grades, I would offer you a cut of the bet money."
Jaune's jaw dropped. He had been cheated!
"Take it as a lesson: never take the first offer, there's always something better."
After a quiet moment, Jaune slammed his front paws in anger and grumbled under his breath as he headed back to the elevator.
Ozpin waited for the door to close. "As I recall, James doesn't know Jaune's true nature, so as far as he knows, you still owe him a favor."
"Oh… right," Glynda sighed.
"Maybe he'll use the favor to get you on a date."
"Ozpin, no."
"A night in Vale after watching a little puppy. How romantic."
"I'll throw you out the window."
"Then who will sign your paychecks?"
Ironwood walked out of the sandwich shop, bag in hand. He always liked getting something local before leaving.
His mind was preoccupied with the day's events, mainly concerning Jaune. He didn't feel as humiliated as he was earlier. In fact, a young dog like Jaune able to understand and do the complicated tasks that he did was really impressive. Dogs really were intelligent and impressive animals.
It reminded him of the K-9 units the army used before going mechanized with droids, though some police units still used dogs. Droids had their advantages over dogs, but then again there were some things dogs could do that droids couldn't. In addition, Jaune seemed to have a very positive effect on his soldiers' morale, something that was important when fighting against the Grimm.
There have been some pushes to bring back K-9 units but he helped decline them all. Though, after today…
He was drawn out of his thoughts when out of nowhere, a dog grabbed the bag from his hands and darted into a nearby alleyway. Eye twitching, he pursued. But the moment he rounded the corner into the alley, he paused.
He now had a good look at the dog. The dog was severely malnourished, had an ETPA tag on its ear, had filthy fur, and its defensive stance was more out of fear. Behind it, there were at least one dozen, if not more, small puppies that looked similar to the adult dog. They had taken a few bites out of the sandwich but stopped to hide behind their mom when he arrived.
Winter and the other soldiers were a little worried when Ironwood summoned them. After hearing that they have lost the wargame to Ozpin, they were afraid that they would be punished. Instead, when they arrived at the training room, they were met with the sight of the General petting a large dog as they watched a large group of puppies eating a pile of chopped meat off a large plate.
It was several moments before one soldier spoke up. "Sir?"
The large dog seemed startled by the new voice, but Ironwood patted her to calm her down. "Relax, they're friends. Trooper, get over here." The soldier did and stood still as the dog sniffed him over before becoming visibly relaxed. "See, friends."
"Sir, what is…" Winter looked down to see one of the puppies by her feet. It looked up at her in a way that she couldn't help but pick it up. She let out a squeak when it sniffed and licked the tip of her nose. She hugged it close caringly.
Seeing this, the other puppies started to curiously walk up to the other soldiers.
The mother dog was nervous at first as the rest of her babies approached the soldiers, but soon relaxed when she saw how welcoming they were. Some immediately picked them up, others were more cautious at first but sat down so the puppies could get more familiar with them.
Ironwood could tell the mom was happy because her wagging tail was hitting his back.
"After much consideration, it has been decided that the military will readopt K-9 units within its ranks," the General said.
Today, Ironwood's HellHound Battalion was born.
Got inspired to write this to show the effect Jaune is having.
