Everyone scattered to find whatever they could in the apartment to take on the Inhumans, and they meant everything. Grant and Jewel had backup weapons stored in all of their hideouts but not enough to give to a whole team. They were only lucky that some of the agents were using their creative minds to think up new weapons. Everyone was in a rush to meet the five minute mark, bumping into each other and scrambling for things they could've sworn were in the building. It almost felt refreshing, if you didn't think back to the thought that they were going to go up against people with special abilities.
Grant felt as if he was moving in slow motion as he strapped on his bulletproof vest, hopefully for the last time on this mission. He removed from his pocket a picture of Jewel and Jasmine on a beach during Italy's Republic Day. A faint smile formed on his lips as he remembered how hard it was to get a spot on the beach but it ended up being worth it in the end. He promised himself that when they were done with all of this, he was going to take them to that beach once again.
"Ward" Grant heard Coulson.
"Sir?"
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" Coulson asked, "I got something to show you"
"Is it the layout of the fleet?" Ward walked over to Coulson who was holding up a tablet.
"Not really" he showed him, "This is the best I can do on such short notice, but I promise to clear off everything once I get access. It's a start"
Grant blinked in surprise, "Is this what I think it is?"
Coulson nodded, "Your record is cleaned off when it comes to SHIELD. Well, my SHIELD, that is. I'm not too sure if this new version solidified your record but I'll make sure to check. You're a free man, Ward"
Grant paused as he took in this moment, "Why are you doing this now? The mission's not done"
"Yes, but you and Jewel have someone waiting for you back home" Coulson explained, "I didn't think this through and I realize now that this job is too dangerous for both parents to be at risk. You've done enough, we can take it from here. You have my word that I will clear off everything once we get the upper hand. I think you've finally convinced me that you're a changed man"
Grant found it hard to swallow as he realized he felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment as he ran a hand over his face. He reached out and gripped onto Coulson's hand and shook it, almost as if the tablet was a diploma. His eyes watered but he beat them back as he gave Coulson a nod.
"Thank you, sir, you really don't know what this means to me" Grant then looked him square in the eye, "But we're not done with our mission yet"
"You don't have to complete it"
"No, but I want to," Grant said, "We want to. Jewel and I never left a job unfinished and we're not going to start today"
Coulson smiled as he liked hearing the sound of that. He was almost afraid that the pair was going to leave but knew Coulson had to give Grant the choice of staying or leaving.
"We could really use the bodies," Coulson confessed.
"Whenever you need us, we're always here to help," Grant said, "But I can't go back as an agent… my daughter-"
"I wasn't expecting you to strap on a badge anytime soon" Coulson huffed, "I saw the way you looked at your baby girl and… I understand, in a way. Let's just hope we're not too late"
"I think Skye will turn around" Grant nodded, "She has very high morales and wouldn't dream of annihilation"
"Okay… that's comforting" Coulson said, awkwardly, "But I see your point. If the need ever arises and we actually do need another agent, can I give you a call?"
"Of course" Grant smiled, "But I would have to ask my wife first"
Coulson looked surprised, "I never realized that you and Hansen were married"
"We aren't but I'm planning on asking now that we're not on the run" Grant sidenodded, "That was the only thing that was stopping us"
Coulson slowly nodded as he understood why they didn't get married; birth and marriage certificates pop up very quickly on their system.
"Well, now you finally have the chance to," Coulson said, "Any ideas?"
Grant looked out the door, "She's always liked Hawaii, maybe it'll be there"
"That's a good call," Coulson agreed, "But you can't beat where you live, right?"
"That place is heaven" Grant sighed, "I kind of think that I like being a farmer on my downtime"
"Oh, I wouldn't" Coulson said, "I'd be too impatient for the seeds to grow"
A gentle knock came at the door as both men turned to see Jewel Hansen at the ready by the doorframe. She had a loving but prepared look on her face as she took in the pair talking to each other in a separate room. Jewel wasn't on edge about the scene but was more prepared about what was to come. Still, she smiled and nodded, signaling that the rest of the team was ready to leave. Coulson turned and looked to Ward who rolled back his shoulders and turned into the agent he admired.
"We're ready, sir," Jewel announced.
"What's the plan?" Grant asked.
"Get to the main base and shut the launches" Coulson turned into the Director as they both walked out of the room, "Anyone attacking us, we attack back"
"What about Skye?" Simmons asked, "What if she attacks us?"
"Skye's not the enemy, it's her mother" Maye said, "When we left it looked like they were arguing with one another. She was very upset with her mother when she killed the Directors"
"Hopefully it stays that way" Coulson said, "We could use Skye's expertise on hacking and stopping a launch. I bet they already changed the codes"
"And what about the Inhumans?" Fitz asked, "Not all of them could be bad"
As much as Jewel wanted to believe that, she knew it was Fitz' wishful thinking that there was some sort of good in the Inhumans. Maybe he was right, but after secluding themselves out in a mountain with a manipulative woman as their leader, she highly doubts it. Jewel checked her icer as everyone just let the question hang in the air. Coulson, Maye, Simmons, and Jewel have heard this question before and didn't want to hurt the man's feelings once more.
"We'll do everything we can" Grant promised, "Let's just hope that they can be reasoned with enough to join our side"
Jewel nodded, "So we won't attack unless they throw the first punch"
"Are you serious?" Hunter asked.
"Hunter" Bobbi turned to him, "For Fitz"
Hunter blew a raspberry before he said, "Okay, fine, but I'm not going to hold back"
"Can we get this show on the road?" Coulson asked, "Cause we're kind of against the clock"
