Prompt: A Fantastical Invention

From: V Tsuion

….

Delphine Andromeda Holmes, granddaughter to Cassiopeia Holmes and a cousin of the great Sherlock Holmes, was bright, mercurial, and highly passionate about animals- in short, typical for a Holmes child. She was also interested in science, namely chemistry, inspired by her famous cousin's great achievements.

Today, however, she was experimenting on a moderate level- she was endeavouring to find a serum to allow animals to communicate with her.

Her best friend, Poppy Watson, niece of Doctor John Watson, hovered nervously behind her, a hand dangling at her side, and a friendly basset hound licking her fingers reassuringly.

"Are you sure this'll work, Del?" She asked Delphine.

"Yes, of course it will!" Replied Delphine, in typical Holmesian fashion, waving her hand dismissively. "I know what I'm doing!"

"I didn't say you didn't." Mumbled Poppy, scratching Toby's head affectionately. "I just…"

"Shush!" Delphine exclaimed, as the serum bubbled. "It's ready!" She dipped her finger in the test tube, before offering it to Toby to lick. She then stood on tiptoe, which Poppy knew meant her friend was in suspense.

Then-

"Good afternoon, ladies," Said Toby, bowing his head. "What can I sniff out for you, today?"

"It worked!" The girls chorused in delight, hugging each other tightly. They decided to have Toby sniff out Mrs. Hudson's famed cookies and offered Toby some dog biscuits for his hard work.

The girls had a right lark of an afternoon, and thought it worth it when Mrs. Hudson and Doctor Watson later found about the biscuits.
