Fear is a funny thing. You name something and there's a phobia for it. Water? Hydrophobia. Blood? Hemophobia. Tight spaces? Claustrophobia.
Everybody is afraid of something. But for people like me, for Shadowchasers, our fears tend to be more... real.

Tyler followed his Duel Runner's radar down the dark streets, passing by several familiar stores. His parents still lived in downtown River City, and he had too, growing up. But these memories did little to comfort him now.
As he turned onto Congo Street, he couldn't help but remember a story kids would constantly tell when he was younger. The Princess Clean Laundromat had been abandoned for ten years, after the original owner died and his family moved back to the mainland. George Argall, the owner of Princess Clean, was a drug smuggler with ties to River City's human mafia, and had been shot and killed in the middle of the night after he did something to anger his supplier. Many locals claimed to see his ghost wandering around the building, trying to clean the blood off his clothes.
Tyler was terrified of ghosts. Always had been. And while he knew for a fact that monsters, magic and multiple gods and afterlives existed, ghosts were a whole different question. No one was really sure if they existed, even the few necromancers who worked with the Shadowchasers.
Naturally, his Duel Runner's negative energy detector started going off right when he drove past the actual laundromat. Tyler sighed and pulled over, parking in front of the creepy building. "I hate this job sometimes..." He muttered to himself. The eerie green light pouring out from the windows did nothing to help his nerves.
Kicking the door open, the muscular Shadowchaser was surprised to find someone waiting for him. A petite girl, sitting on top of a washing machine. She was pretty weird looking, to say the least. Her skin and hair were both bleach white, and she wore a sparkling black sequined outfit, with heavy dark glasses covering her eyes. She waved to him. "Yoo hoo, looking for me?" Around her neck was the black sun pendant the Shadowchasers had been seeing everywhere.
"Probably..." Tyler said, stepping forward and strapping on his Duel Disk. "So, what are you? A vampire? A new type of elf I haven't heard of before? Fallen angel? Some kind of space monster that looks like a little girl for some reason?"
"I'm just as human as you are." She smiled. "My name is Black Velvet, or at least, it is now. I'm one of the five generals of the Ebon Sun, and I'm here to test you. It's Tyler, right? You don't really look like a Tyler." The strange girl held out her arm, and a solid black Duel Disk appeared on it.
"You got me, it's actually Tadeo. But everybody calls me Tyler, because it's easier." He shrugged. "And what kind of test?" Tyler had never been a fan of tests. He quickly took his deck out of his Duel Disk and swapped it with another one he'd been keeping in his jacket. He'd never used this deck in the field before, he hoped it was good enough.
"A test of strength, better known as a Shadow Duel." Velvet explained. She grabbed her pendant, and a ring of purple fire surrounded them, preventing either duelist from escaping. "My boss thinks the four of you are a threat, but I don't agree. That's why we're going to take you all out, one by one!"
(Velvet LP 8000) - (Tyler LP 8000)
"My turn! Draw!" Velvet drew six cards, and fanned them out in front of her. Her face was unreadable due to the darkness and heavy glasses, but Tyler caught a smile in the light of the purple flames. "I activate Dark Shuffle! So I take five Dark attribute monsters from my deck, and place them on top, in any order I want. Buuut," She dragged out the but, "When I draw them, I can't do anything with them."
"So what's the point?" Tyler asked, watching the pale girl rearrange her deck. She shuffled her cards with the skill of a Vegas dealer, before putting them back.
"You'll see~" Velvet said, in a sing-songy voice. She quickly set a monster and two other cards. "That'll have to do for my turn. Your move, big boy."
Tyler drew a card, but was immediately interrupted. "Are you serious? I haven't even played anything yet!"
"Don't yell at me, I didn't write the rules." She scrunched up her face, suddenly looking a lot less cute. "I activate Needlebug Nest, sending the top 5 cards of my deck to the graveyard! And that triggers two more effects."
A small skeleton dressed like European royalty appeared behind Velvet, cackling madly before vanishing. "Like my Wightprince? He's much friendlier than he looks! When he goes to the graveyard, I have to send in a Lady in Wight and a Skull Servant, just to keep him company." She quickly discarded two cards from her deck.
"Then there's my Wight Baking." A new monster manifested where Wightprince had been. It looked like Skull Servant, but it was holding two skewered sweet potatoes in its hands. "I get to take two Wight monsters from my deck, but then I have to discard one card. Which leads to our third effect."
Tyler groaned, as Wight Baking was replaced by a new skeleton, this one wearing purple wizards robes covered in moons and stars. "Wight Magician's effect activates when he goes to the graveyard. I can add one spell or trap card to my hand that specifically mentions Skull Servant in its text."
"Can I take my turn now?" The Shadowchaser asked. Velvet nodded. "Great. I'll start with Fire Formation Tenki. I search out one level 4 or lower Beast Warrior. Next, Fire Formation Domei." Two Continuous Spells appeared in front of him, followed by an enormous stone slab, which rose out of the floor. Six candles sat on top of the slab, arranged in a circle around the edge.
"I tribute my Fire Fist Leopard and Elephant, and Ritual Summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Eland!" Two small balls of fire crashed into the ritual table, lighting the candles, which burst into flames themselves. The fire shaped itself into an antelope, which parted to reveal a human looking warrior. He was effeminate, but handsome, with long hair tied into a ponytail, and wearing fancy Japanese armor. He wielded a crossbow in both hands (ATK 2400)
"Oooh, what a cutie!" Velvet whistled at the Ritual Monster. "There's a criminal lack of cards in this game that look like cute guys! If they can put every single Harpie Lady in a bikini, why can't we get some beefy dudes in crop top armor?"
Tyler pretended he didn't hear that. "I summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear!" A fireball shaped like a bear burst onto the field, before turning into another warrior. This one was much more muscular than Eland, and wore a helmet that obscured his face. (ATK 1600)
"Hope you weren't too attached to that facedown monster, because Bear's effect lets me destroy a card, as long as I tribute a Fire Formation." Domei was enveloped in blue flames, which leapt into the air and crashed down on Velvet's monster (Pyramid Turtle). She groaned, the light being reflected in her glasses.
"When Domei goes to the graveyard, I get to bring back a Fire Fist monster. I think I'll choose Leopard." A fiery cat jumped onto the battlefield, before it became a caped warrior with a long, braided ponytail. (ATK 0) "But he's not staying for long. Because I can tribute him and set another Fire Formation from my deck."
"Now, everybody attack!" Bear ran forward, fists raised, and Eland fired an arrow made out of flames. But Velvet simply discarded a car from her hand. A tiny skeleton with long blonde hair, wearing a pink night dress, appeared in front of her, halting their attacks.
"Wightprincess' effect, all monsters lose 300 attack and defense points for each of their levels." She explained, flippantly playing with her hair. "So I'm still here."
Tyler looked over his remaining cards before nodding, signifying the end of his turn.
(VLP 6800) - (TLP 8000)
Velvet drew, and her pendant began to shine. "Time for a change of scenery. I activate Mausoleum of Wight!" The laundromat transformed into a mausoleum made of pure white stone, with wall carvings depicting King of the Skull Servants and various Wight monsters. "As long as this card is on the field, you can't banish cards from my graveyard. It has a few other effects, but we'll get to those."
"I summon the one, the only, King of the Skull Servants!" A pile of bones started to emerge from the floor, and out of it rose a skeleton wearing tattered purple robes, giving off an aura of dark energy. "And his attack points are equal to the number of Skull Servants in my graveyard times 1000!" (ATK 9000)
"Attack, Eldritch Blast!" King of the Skull Servants gathered necrotic energy into his hands, before firing a massive beam at Eland. "And the best part is, because of my field spell, you can't chain to his attacks!"
There was an explosion, and smoke covered the field. When it parted, Tyler was kneeling, hands on the ground, his body shaking as black lightning crackled around him. Taking such a massive hit during a Shadow Duel was almost too much for his mortal body. "The shadows aren't forgiving, there's no room for weakness. A lot like the light, but the shadows are less subtle about it."
Tyler groaned and struggled to pull himself up. Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear reached out a hand, helping his duelist stand. "I'm not... dead... yet." He said, breathing heavily. "I activated Fire Formation - Kaiyo before you attacked, so all my Beast Warriors get 300 more attack points. And I'm gonna activate Shard of Greed, so in two turns I get to draw two cards." The Pot of Greed briefly appeared, before shattering.
"I use Bear's effect, and tribute Fire Formation - Tenki to destroy your King." The Continuous Spell transformed into another fireball, launching itself at King of the Skull Servants. But it stopped in the middle of the field, blocked by a glowing barrier. "Oh come on!"
"Little Wight Lie is a counter trap that negates any effect that targets a Wight monster, as long as I discard another one from my hand." Velvet explained, discarding a Skull Servant. King's attack points rose to 10,000, and the shadows around it grew more intense.
"Urgh... I set this monster, and switch Bear to defense mode. Sorry, big guy, better luck next time." Tyler sighed.
(VLP 6800) - (TLP 1800)
"My draw!" Velvet immediately played a card. "I summon Shutendoji!" The monster was a burly red demon with long blonde hair, carrying a gourd. (ATK 1500)
"I've got both Shield Crush and Opti Camouflage Armor in my deck, all I have to do is draw one and you're finished. So I'm going to use Shutendoji's effect and banish two zombies from my graveyard to draw 1 card." She explained. The oni took a swig of whatever was in its gourd, as Velvet pocketed two cards and drew a third. "Hm... Not great. Time for battle."
Shutendoji destroyed Bear with its fiery breath, and King blasted Tyler's face down monster. "That was Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Hawk! And when he's destroyed, I can set a Fire Formation from my deck." There was a burst of orange flames shaped like a bird, which died down and formed into a card.
Tyler drew. "Shard of Greed gains a counter." Half of the Pot of Greed pieced itself together. "And I summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Spirit!" The new monster didn't look anything like Tyler's other cards. It was made entirely of blue flames, in a vaguely humanoid shape, and wore white and gold armor. (ATK 800)
"How is that a Beast Warrior?" Velvet objected. "That's clearly a Pyro, it's literally just fire!"
"How does a human end up working for a cult that wants eternal darkness?" Tyler replied. "We can't see in the dark! What do you even get out of this?"
"You really want to know? I'll tell you." Velvet took off her glasses, revealing that the area around her eyes was heavily scarred. Her eyes themselves were a dull grey color, like poached eggs, with no visible iris or pupils. "A few years ago, I was in an accident that almost completely destroyed my eyesight. I can't tolerate light at all without wearing these ugly glasses, and I can barely see anything."
"Eternal night would be a blessing for me. No more sunburns, no more glasses when I go outside, and the Ebon Sun promised to give me new eyes! Better ones, made out of magic and stardust. I could finally see colors again." Velvet seemed to be telling the truth, but Tyler could sense there was more to the story.
"That's sad and all, but... you didn't have to become a bad guy just to get your eyes fixed." He pointed out. When she didn't respond, he continued his turn. "Spirit lets me Special Summon a level 3 monster from my graveyard, as long as it only has 200 defense points." Leopard reappeared, nodding at Spirit and then at Tyler.
"Now I tune them together! I Synchro Summon my level 6 Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Horse Prince!" The two monsters collapsed into flames, which shaped themselves into a stallion. It reared back on its hind legs and neighed, before transforming into another armored soldier. He had long, flowing hair that looked like blue fire, and wore the same armor as Spirit, over purple pantaloons and a black shirt, of all things. (ATK 2200)
"With his effect, I can summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Rooster from my deck!" Another feminine looking warrior joined the fight, accompanied by a rooster made of purple flames. (ATK 1500) "Now Rooster's effect lets me search out Fire Fist Caribou. But I'm not gonna keep him for long, because I activate Fire Formation Yoko!" Tyler's set card lifted up. "All I have to do is discard a Beast Warrior, and Skeletor over there is history!"
The Continuous Spell fired off a blast of white hot flames, incinerating King of the Skull Servants. "Now, Rooster and Horse Prince, attack!" Rooster drew a pair of spears and skewered Shutendoji, while Horse Prince transformed back into a fiery stallion and rushed at Velvet, knocking her over.
"You still alive over there?" Tyler asked. Velvet let out a groan and slowly climbed back onto the washing machine. Her hair was scorched, and her glasses had a few hairline cracks in them, but she was still in one piece. "Great, I don't wanna kill you. Even if you are evil..."
"Anyways, I use Rooster's effect to get rid of Fire Formation Yoko, and set another one from my deck." The Spell vanished, replaced by a set card. Tyler grinned and hit a button on his duel disk. "I end my turn, but that triggers Caribou's effect. I get to summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Snake from my deck!"
A spiraling snake made of orange flames erupted from the card, parting to reveal a thin, lightly armored warrior with a ponytail and a spear. (ATK 1800)
(VLP 3800) - (TLP 1800)
Velvet patted her dress down, extinguishing it. "Okay, you want to play rough? I can play rough!" She drew a card, and played it immediately. "Allure of Darkness! I draw two cards, and banish my Lady in Wight."
"Now for the final effect of Mausoleum of Wight! If King of the Skull Servants is in my graveyard, I can bring him back by banishing another Zombie. So goodbye Wightprincess!" The royal skeleton reappeared, looking angrier than ever. (ATK 7000)
"I activate my trap card! Defensive Tactics of the Brotherhood!" Tyler's set card lifted, and a wall of fire sprung up to protect his monsters. "I can only activate this if the total attack of all your monsters is more than the total of all mine. Fire Fist monsters can't be destroyed by battle this turn, and I don't take any damage!"
Velvet stamped her foot and screamed like a child about to throw a tantrum. "You're taking all the fun out of this!"
"Out of sending people to the Shadow Realm?"
"Yes!" She huffed and set one card. "End turn."
Tyler rolled his eyes and drew. "Shard of Greed gets another counter, so I can send it to the graveyard and draw 2 cards." The Pot of Greed finally put itself back together, and then vanished in a puff of pink smoke.
"I activate Skill Prisoner!" Velvet snapped her fingers. King of the Skull Servants was surrounded by a white aura, which quickly faded into his usual dark one. "So any effect that would target my king this turn is negated."
"Not going to matter. I play Supremacy Berry, so I get 2000 more life points, since yours are higher than mine." Tyler glowed with golden light, and some of his injuries faded. "I use Rooster's effect to swap Fire Formation Kaiyo for another one from my deck, and then I'm gonna swap him for Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Caribou from my graveyard, using Circle of the Fire Kings!"
Kaiyo vanished, replaced by a set card, and then Rooster followed, exploding into flames that quickly parted to reveal a much more muscular warrior carrying a spiked club. (ATK 1000) "Wait, two level four monsters... you're going to Xyz Summon, aren't you?" Velvet asked.
"You got that right!" Tyler grinned and started spinning his arm like he was turning a crank. "Get ready! I overlay my level 4 Brotherhood of the Fire Fist Snake and Caribou, to Xyz Summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Cardinal!" The two Beast Warriors were swallowed up by the Overlay Network, which was bright red this time.
An enormous bird made of white and red fire soared over the field, before crashing down and transforming into a thick bodied man, with a bushy beard, wearing a white robe over armor. (ATK 1800) "He's not my strongest monster, but just look at his effect! I can detach both overlay units, then send 2 Fire Fist monsters from my graveyard back to my deck." Tyler explained. "And then I can send two of your monsters back to your deck!"
"No!" Velvet gasped as two Wightmares slid out of her discard slot. She begrudgingly shuffled them into her deck, as King of the Skull Servants' ATK dropped to 5000.
"Fire Formation - Tensen will help even the odds!" Tyler's set card lifted up. "This gives all my Beast Warriors 300 attack points, but one of them gets an extra 700 points on top of that!" Horse Prince flexed his muscles as his attack score increased to 3200. "Next up, Gift of the Martyr!"
Cardinal turned to look at Horse Prince and nodded, before vanishing. "This gives all of Cardinal's attack points to Horse Prince, which makes him just strong enough to beat your King!" The Synchro produced a sword made of blue flames and charged forward, slicing King of the Skull Servants in two.
"I banish Wight Baking to revive him!" Velvet growled. The King returned, his attack lowering to 4000.
(VLP 3500) - (TLP 3800)
"Draw!" Velvet's voice had become harsh and older sounding. "I activate Card of Sanctity! Now we both draw until we have six cards in our hands." She drew four cards, while Tyler drew six. Velvet held one of her cards in the air dramatically, as black energy seemed to be absorbed into it.
"From the deepest depths of the netherworld comes the embodiment of death and decay! I summon the No-Eyes Wight Dragon!" King of the Skull Servants turned its head to the sky and let out a blood curdling scream. It collapsed, and the ground erupted, purple light flooding the laundromat.
The thing that crawled out was... Well, it was a skeletal dragon. Hard to describe it any other way. Four clawed legs, fangs the size of swords, one massive horn on its head, and just enough flesh to cover its wings. The thing seemed to radiate dark energy, and had wispy ghosts flying out of its eye sockets. (ATK 3500)
"I activate its effect, go Negative Energy Flood!" The dragon opened its mouth and a mass of glowing, wailing ghosts flew out, swarming the Fire Formation Tensen card and reducing it to dust. The temperature seemed to drop by at least ten degrees. "By returning one banished Skull Servant to my graveyard, I can banish one of your spells or traps."
"And I'm not done! I activate Cursed Scream of Corruption to send two more Wights from my deck to the graveyard. Just to be safe." Velvet's necklace seemed to glow when she used these cards. "Are you ready to be consumed by darkness, Tyler~?"
"Can I get a second option?" He gulped, stepping back until he was almost in the ring of fire preventing him from escaping.
"No." No-Eyes Wight Dragon opened its fanged maw and blasted Horse Prince with necrotic energy, causing him to age rapidly until he was just a skeleton in armor, which collapsed. "And now for my dragon's second effect! I destroy him and summon a regular Skull Servant from my deck!" The massive dracolich exploded, splattering the walls of the mausoleum with green ichor. A simple skeleton in a tattered purple robe stood where it had been. (ATK 300)
"I don't get it..." Tyler said, the fear starting to leave his body. "His attack points didn't even go up."
"It doesn't matter how many points he has, because thanks to my dragon's effect, if Skull Servant damages you, you lose 1000 life points for every Skull Servant in my graveyard! And I've got more than enough to finish you off!" Velvet laughed. "Attack with... huh, I never thought I'd actually have to attack with this guy. What do I call it? Oh, who cares!"
Skull Servant, looking a little confused (if that was possible for a skeleton), ran forward and raised his sharp, bony fingers. "This duel's not over yet!" Tyler played a card, and a fireball shot down from the ceiling to intercept the attack. "I summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Scorpion!"
The fire shaped itself into a scorpion, and then became a man. He was handsome, wearing armor similar to the other Fire Fist monsters, and in his hands was a bronze, twin-forked spear. (ATK 1000) "Since you attacked me when I didn't have any monsters, I get to summon Scorpion and end the battle phase."
Velvet twitched, as if she was going to explode. "You... you ruined by moment!" She screamed. "Now how am I supposed to end this dramatically?!"
"I don't care!"
"Fine! I set this and end my turn." The albino girl fumed. She could feel her mistress growing impatient, and knew that she had to win quickly, or else...
"Great! Time for a change of scenery." The Field Spell slot on Tyler's Duel Disk opened up, and he placed a card in. Half of the mausoleum vanished, replaced with a stone fortress on top of a mountain. It was a welcome sight after a duel filled with grim imagery.
"I activate Fire Fortress Atop Liang Peak! And because that counts as a Fire Formation card, I can summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Panda from my hand!" A burly warrior in heavy armor ran onto the duel field, drawing a sword from his waist. (ATK 2100) "And I use his effect to bring back Rooster!" The effeminate warrior reappeared, looking smug.
"And Fire Fortress gets two counters, because I summoned two Fire Fist monsters!" Two torches lit up across the stone pathway. "It's gonna get a few more, because I overlay Rooster and Scorpion to Xyz Summon Lion Emperor!" The two monsters vanished, replaced by a tall, masculine warrior wearing elaborate, colorful armor, which included a lion-like mane. (ATK 2200)
"And I'm hardly done! I activate Fire Formation - Tensu! So I get to summon twice per turn, as long as one of them's a Beast Warrior." A new monster joined the armored warriors, this one a wolf in yellow combat gear (ATK 1600) "I'll go with Coach Soldier Wolfbark, and then sacrifice him to summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Swallow!"
This Fire Fist wore blue armor, with large shoulder pads, and wielded two flaming green swords (ATK 2000). "But before I do anything else, Mystical Space Typhoon tears down your Mausoleum!" A tornado ripped across the room and blew Mausoleum of Wight off the field, allowing Fire Fortress Atop Liang Peak to cover Velvet's half of the field as well.
"When he's summoned, I get to set a Fire Formation from my deck. And I'll activate it right away!" Tyler pointed, and his card lifted up. His three Beast Warriors raised their weapons, which were seemed to burn even brighter. "Fire Formation Kaiyo! So all Beast Warriors gain 300 attack, and inflict piercing damage! Attack!"
Lion Emperor drew his sword and struck down Skull Servant. The fire that radiated from his blade flew off and hit Velvet, causing her to scream. Swallow attacked the set monster, which revealed itself to be Necro Gardna.
"I activate Necro Gardna's effect!" Velvet cried, before Panda could attack. The Dark Warrior appeared before her, and she took a moment to catch her breath. Her hair and dress were singed, and her glasses were almost completely shattered. She threw them on the ground, grasping her pendant.
"It's my turn." The pale girl drew a card slowly. Her Ebon Sun pendant began to glow, and so did the cards in her hand. "I activate Ebon Key! Now the duel is over!" The same key shaped obelisk that had saved Zalam descended from the ceiling, hitting the floor and momentarily blinding Tyler with violet light.
(DRAW)
When he could open his eyes again, Tyler was alone. Velvet was gone, and aside from the multiple burn marks on the floor, walls and ceiling, there was no trace of her or their duel together. He wasn't sure if he was disappointed, or relieved.
He pulled out his phone and saw the message Kim had sent everyone. "Damn it..." He sighed, at least no one had lost yet.
