Let's talk about vampires.
One of the first things anyone asks when they find out about magic is "are vampires real?" And the answer is yes. Sort of.
Vampires used to live side by side with humans. They were artists, musicians, warriors, poets, incredible lovers... I'm getting sidetracked. Anyways, one day, a war broke out between humans and vampires, and somehow the vampires lost.
They were almost completely wiped out, and even today there are only a few hundred of them left on the planet. Whatever magic brings Shadowkind to earth just stopped bringing vampires over, too, so their numbers aren't increasing any time soon.
Most vampires try to live their lives like any other Shadowkind. Two of them are even Shadowchasers! (Maybe more, it's a big organization.) But some of them just can't get over the whole "attempted genocide" thing. Even though humans don't remember that the war ever happened.
My opponent is one of those people. And honestly, I can't 100% blame him. But I'm still gonna take him down.

Caspian drove through the dirty, broken down slums of River City, singing to himself like he always did when he was alone. "Every turn I take, every trail I track, every path I make, every road leads back to the place I know~" His voice was amazing, that was just one of the benefits of having a mermaid for a mother, but tinged with anxiety. Caspian could count the number of shadow duels he'd been in on one hand.
Sure, he'd won them all, but you only had to lose once. He had heard stories about Shadowchasers who died in the line of duty. Not everyone got to make a heroic sacrifice like Kim's father. Sometimes you were poisoned by an assassin, or eaten by a dracolich, or you just lost a duel to the wrong person.
Death wasn't what scared Caspian. The existence of multiple gods and afterlives were a proven fact, and there had even been a cleric in his mother's clan back in Lahaina who could do real divine magic. What scared him was failure.
But Caspian didn't have time to think about his fears. A pitch black Duel Runner, built to resemble a Harley Davidson, drove right up to him. The driver was wearing a black leather riding outfit with a matching helmet, which he slowly removed. "Hello, Shadowchaser. My name is Noir."
With his bleach white skin and blood red eyes, it couldn't be more obvious that he was a vampire. His hair was short, green and messy, as if he cut it himself, and his face was almost completely devoid of emotion. "I believe you know the organization I work for. And what I'm here to do." He said, matter of fact-ly.
"You're with the Ebon Sun, and you wanna kill me so my team and I can't stop you from... I don't know, blowing up the earth or something." Caspian replied, staring the vampire in the eye. Neither one of them blinked, Caspian out of a desire to win this staring contest, and Noir possibly due to not needing to blink.
"We want to make the world more hospitable for nocturnal Shadowkind." Noir claimed, his voice monotone. "I would expect a Shadow-touched like yourself to understand how harsh the human world can be." He had a threatening aura surrounding him, and Caspian couldn't tell if it was magical or just bad vibes.
"Just because I'm part fish doesn't mean I want to flood the planet." Caspian rolled his eyes. "What's a vampire doing living on an island anyways? The whole city is beachfront property! Are you suicidal or something?"
"Enough jokes. Let's begin the duel." In a flash of purple light, the Ebon Sun medallion appeared around Noir's neck, and streaks of purple flames began to line the street, making it impossible to access the sidewalk. "First one to round the corner takes the first turn."
(Caspian LP 8000 / Speed Counters 0) - (Noir LP 8000 / Speed Counters 0)
Caspian sped ahead, drawing his opening hand. "You better pay attention, Edward, because this duel's gonna be over before you even blink!" He played a card, and his Duel Runner started going even faster than before. "Overboost is a Speed Spell that increases my Speed Counters by 4, but drops them to 1 at the end of the turn. Which is fine by me, since that's still one more than you have."
"Now that I've got Speed Counters, I can play Speed Fusion! I fuse Sea Steel Chain Eel with Sea Steel Piranha! Armored beasts of the abyssal waters, come together and form a creature of prehistoric might! Fusion Summon! Sea Steel Coelacanth!"
The monster that appeared was best described as massive and ugly. It was a coelacanth alright, but its scales looked like they were made out of overlapping metal plates, like chainmail, and it was wearing a sports car as armor. It stared at Noir with its blank fish eyes, growling menacingly (DEF 2400).
"When this big guy is summoned, I have to send the top 5 cards of my deck to the graveyard, but for every Water monster I discard this way, you take 400 points of damage!" Caspian snatched five cards off the top of his deck (Deep Sea Diva, Sea Steel Anchor Squid, Speed Energy, Call of the Haunted and Abyss Soldier) and quickly fitted them into the discard slot.
Coelacanth turned around to face the vampire, and opened its mouth, firing three stone torpedo's. Noir barely reacted, swerving to avoid the projectiles. They exploded when they hit the ground, and Caspian knew instantly that this was a Shadow Duel. And not just that, a Shadow Turbo Duel, the most dangerous kind of duel. There was all the danger of a regular Shadow Duel, but you were on top of a motorcycle and had to keep track of your Speed Counters the whole time.
"Is that all?" Noir said, in his usual dry tone. Caspian set a card and signaled the end of his turn, as his Speed Counters decreased and his Duel Runner slowed down considerably.
"My turn, then. I draw." He looked over his cards briefly. "I discard Red Eyes Black Dragon from my hand in order to summon Cosmo Brain." A garish monster floated out of the summoning portal. It was a humanoid spellcaster wearing a red dress, but over that it wore a flowing blue cloak and a bizarre conical hat that covered most of its face. (ATK 1500)
"Nice hat." Caspian quipped. Noir ignored him, and continued with his turn.
"When I summon Cosmo Brain this way, she gains attack points equal to the level of the discarded monster times 200." Cosmo Brain produced a magic staff laden with gems, and its ATK rose to 2900. "Attack his monster!" The Spellcaster waved its staff, summoning a meteor shower which crushed Sea Steel Coelacanth.
"I activate my monster's effect! When he's destroyed in battle, I can banish him and your monster!" The ghost of Coelacanth rose up from beneath the ground, lunging for Cosmo Brain. It sank its fangs into her, dragging the Spellcaster through another portal.
"Hmm." Noir didn't have any other reaction to losing his monster. "I summon Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight." A black armored Warrior leaped onto the field, ready to defend his master. (ATK 1800) "I set two cards and end my turn."
(CLP 8000 / SC 2) - (NLP 6800 / SC 1)
Caspian drew a card, and both men started driving faster, as their Speed Counters increased by 1. "From my graveyard, I activate the effect of Sea Steel Chain Eel! I banish it and Sea Steel Anchor Squid in order to draw 2 cards!" He drew again, before hitting another button on his duel disk.
"Oh. and when Anchor Squid is banished, you take 800 damage!" The robotic looking Aqua briefly appeared, hovering over Noir's Duel Runner, before wrapping its tentacles around him and squeezing. He grunted slightly, but otherwise made no noise. "You're really taking all the fun out of this, you know."
"This isn't supposed to be fun, Shadowchaser. This is supposed to be war." Noir growled, his eyes glowing red underneath his helmet. "Not that you would know anything about that. You Shadowchasers never take anything seriously."
"Clearly you've never met Kim." Caspian rolled his eyes. "I set one monster and banish Sea Steel Piranha from my graveyard to summon Aqua Spirit." There was a burst of bubbles, and the girly sea sprite appeared, blowing a kiss towards Noir. (ATK 1600)
"Piranha's effect activates, taking one of your facedown cards with it!" The toothy Fish suddenly leaped out of the road as if it were water, diving down onto Noir's set card and tearing it into pieces.
"Congratulations, you managed to save yourself from a Fusion Reserve." The vampire snarked. "Is that all?"
"Not yet! I set one more card, and then I activate Speed Demon!" A storm began raging over the two duelists. "You take 1000 damage!" A bolt of lightning went crashing down directly onto Noir's Duel Runner. Caspian looked over his shoulder to make sure his opponent was still alive... or undead, or whatever vampires were.
The black Harley Davidson seemed to be driving all by itself, with no rider in sight. Caspian assumed he had won by default, but there was a feint squeaking noise, and looking closer, he saw something small flying over the bike. A bat!
The bat transformed back into Noir, landing perfectly on his Duel Runner and gripping the handlebars to keep himself on track. "That could have hurt."
"Hey, that's cheating!" Caspian objected.
"Show me where in the rules it says I'm not allowed to turn into a bat." Noir replied.
"Fuck you! I end my turn."
"Then it's my move." Noir's Speed Counters rose to 3, while Caspian's became 4. "I activate Red Eyes Spirit to Special Summon Red Eyes Black Dragon from my graveyard!" The massive, bone thin Dragon made famous by Katsuya Jonouchi rose onto the field, roaring and flapping its wings (ATK 2400)
"I activate Aqua Spirit's effect, your dragon is switched to defense mode and can't attack this turn!" Aqua Spirit blew a cloud of bubbles at Red-Eyes, forcing it to kneel. "And I chain Full Throttle! I get an extra Speed Counter every turn!"
"It doesn't matter if you have 4 counters or 44, you won't defeat me." The vampire played another card, his own copy of Speed Fusion. "I fuse Gearfried the Red Eyes Iron Knight and Red Eyes Black Dragon in order to fusion summon Red Eyes Slash Dragon!"
"Oh crap." Was all Caspian had to say. The two monsters were absorbed into the fusion vortex, replaced by a much larger dragon. This one was more muscular than the vanilla Red Eyes, with much larger wings, and was covered in armor. Silver and black metal with blood red orbs decorating its body. It had massive blades attached to its arms, making its silhouette that much more intimidating. (ATK 2800)
"Attack Aqua Spirit!" Slash Dragon raised its bladed arms to strike, but briefly paused. "When Slash Dragon declares an attack, I can take one Warrior type monster from my graveyard and equip it to him, granting him 200 more attack." The fusion monster's ATK rose to 3000, as it cleaved Aqua Spirit in half.
The force of the attack went straight through Caspian's monster and hit his vehicle, causing him to swerve to avoid crashing. "I set one card and end my turn."
(CLP 6600 / SC 4) - (NLP 5000 / SC 3)
Caspian drew a card, his Speed Counters raising to 6. Rushed Burial? That's not really helpful right now... At least I still have a monster on the field. Unless he draws a removal on his next turn... But I can survive 3000 damage... He shook his head, trying not to overthink things.
"Hey, since we're here, and only one of us is making it out alive... mind telling me why you hate the Shadowchasers so much?" The redheaded fishblood figured he might as well ask now. "Did we arrest your parents? Your girlfriend? Your boyfriend?"
"I'll tell you, but after that, no more questions." Noir sighed. "I was born 200 years ago in a small Alaskan town. My parents thought it would be a good place for vampires to live. Not too hot, plenty of cloudy weather, lots of space between them and their neighbors. They tried to keep a low profile, never feeding on the same person twice, and going after cattle or blood banks whenever they were an option."
"Then they had me, and I ruined everything. I didn't have any other kids to play with growing up, so I spent most of my time wandering around, chasing wild animals and eating for fun. Which is something no vampire should ever do. I got sloppy, leaving obvious bite marks that healed slowly, and taking more blood than I needed. And one day I took too much. I... I killed someone."
Caspian gasped. He didn't know how he'd live with himself if he had accidentally killed someone. He knew he might have to do it one day, being a Shadowchaser, but that would be a criminal, some dark sorcerer or crime lord. Not a random civilian who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"There were no Shadowchasers in my hometown, so the local Awares took matters into their own hands. One of them found where we lived, and... they set our house on fire, with all of us in it. I was the only one who managed to escape." Noir punched his Duel Runner, breaking off one of the handles. It went flying, shattering the window of some nearby store. "I flew to the nearest city to ask for help, but the Shadowchasers were useless!"
"Do you know what they told me? That they would look into it. And they never got back to me!" The vampire's voice was halfway between crying and screaming. He gripped his remaining handle bar tightly, trying to keep his emotions under control. "So I took matters into my own hands. I went back to my town and asked every Shadow I could find if they knew anything about the crime. And eventually I got a name."
"Unfortunately, my parents' killer had left Alaska all together, so I had to chase them across the country. Eventually I made my way here, to River City, and met Mama Killa. She told me she could make this world a better place for Shadowkind like myself, so we wouldn't have to live in isolation, so we didn't have to rely on humans!"
Caspian paused, trying to think of the right thing to say. "Look, that sucks, it really does, but... how do you know she's telling the truth? This Mama Killa... she could be using you, like Dartz and the Knights of the Orichalcos. Her real goal could be completely different from whatever she's told you!"
"You don't know that!" Noir hissed, baring his fangs. "Now take your turn!"
"I have to pass, I can't do anything right now." Caspian sighed.
"Then it's my move!" The vampire drew, briefly looking at the card and grimacing before turning his attention towards his opponent. "I activate my trap, Castle of Dragon Souls!" His set card lifted, only to stop halfway through.
"I chain Sea Steel Riptide! I send Chain Eel back to my graveyard and your trap is negated!" Caspian's own set card transformed into a tidal wave, which crashed down over Noir's field, shattering his trap. The vampire hissed as he was drenched in water, doing his best to shield his cards.
"Hey, a little saltwater is great for your skin!" Caspian teased. "And you need all the help you can get, you look like you haven't seen the sun in centuries! Oh, wait, you haven't."
"That isn't funny! Slash Dragon, attack his facedown monster!" The fusion raised its claws and sliced the hidden monster in half, which was revealed to be a turtle with a metallic shell. "I end my turn."
(CLP 6600 / SP 8) - (NLP 5000 / SP 5)
Caspian drew, his Speed Counters rising to 10. He was outspeeding Noir by a lot, but it didn't matter much when his opponent had card advantage.
"I play Rushed Burial, which lets me send Sea Steel Swordfish from my deck to my graveyard!" A card shot out of his deck, and he quickly discarded it. "Next, I activate Fixed Race! So I draw until I'm holding 6 cards, but my Speed Counters are cut in half!" Caspian filled out his hand, slowing down until he was behind Noir.
"I hope those cards are good ones, because you won't be getting another turn." The vampire growled.
"They are! I activate my second Speed Fusion, fusing Sea Steel Thorn Starfish with Abyss Warrior! Creatures of the metal ocean, come together and make way for the heavy armored beast of the deep sea! Fusion Summon!" The fusion vortex opened up, releasing another tidal wave that flooded the street. The purple flames that prevented either duelist from dismounting seemed to keep the water from hitting any stores, interestingly.
A massive crab wearing a tank as a shell descended onto the field. "Meet Sea Steel King Crab!" (ATK 2600)
Before Caspian could say anything else, a message appeared on his Duel Disk. The Ebon Sun have an escape clause for Shadow Games. End the duel ASAP It was from Kim. He nodded, understanding that he needed to speed things up (no pun intended).
"King Crab gains 200 points to both scores for each of my banished Water monsters, so it's time to slice up that dragon of yours!" King Crab's ATK rose to 3200, and it seized Slash Dragon with both claws, squeezing the life out of the Fusion monster. "I also activate the effect of Sea Steel Angelfish! My monster gains ATK equal to your monster's ATK for this battle only!" King Crab doubled in size as its ATK became 6200, slicing Slash Dragon in half.
The Fusion monster's destruction caused an explosion that sent Noir flying. He struggled to regain control of his Duel Runner, almost crashing right into the shadow barrier. Flames lapped at his bike and suit, covering him in soot. The vampire screamed an inhuman scream, a mix of fear and pure rage.
"I set one card and end my turn." Caspian hoped he could end this soon.
Noir drew his next card and immediately played it. "Angel Baton. I draw twice, then discard once." He did just that, setting another card on the field. "End turn."
Caspian drew a card and pursed his lips. It was Tears of a Mermaid, the card Kennedy had given him. But now wasn't the time for sentiment. "I attack you directly!"
"I chain Necro Fusion!" Noir's set card lifted, and a darker version of the fusion vortex opened up. "I banish Supay and Red-Eyes Black Dragon from my graveyard to summon Red-Eyes Shadow Dragon!" Two monsters appeared. The classic normal Dragon monster, and some kind of demonic mask with large horns and fangs. They merged together, forming... a shadow.
The monster looked like a silhouette drawn with ink, still dragon shaped but bleeding darkness from its wings and tail, anything you could consider an "edge". It made no sound, and simply hovered there. (ATK 3600)
"When my monster is fusion summoned, all other cards on the field go to the graveyard!" Shadow Dragon spread its wings, which combined and expanded into a black hole that sucked all of Caspian's cards into it.
"I activate Sea Steel Squall! I send Coelacanth back to my Extra Deck and deal you damage equal to half your monster's ATK!" Caspian tried to activate his trap, but it seemed to do nothing. Shadow Dragon grew even larger, its ATK rising to 5400.
"My Shadow Dragon can negate any effect that would deal effect damage, and increase its ATK by the same amount." Noir explained. "Now end your turn."
"Lolo Kanapapiki haole!" Caspian swore. He set one card and signaled that his turn was over.
(CLP 6600 / SC 7) - (NLP 400 / SC 7)
"I draw." Noir didn't even look at the card. "Shadow Dragon, attack directly!" The Fusion opened its mouth and fired a beam of pure black energy. Caspian tensed up, expecting his body to erupt with pain like he had been hit by lightning or set on fire (both of which had happened to him before), but instead, he felt... nothing.
A concerning nothingness. Like all five of his senses had shut down for a second, and then suddenly turned back on. He quickly ran his hands over his body, making sure everything was still there. Eyes? Nose? Mouth? Ears? Yes, all there, and all very sweaty from stress and the fire that surrounded him. He breathed deeply.
"Do you know why I use Red-Eyes monsters, Shadowchasers?" Noir asked. "Because the name 'Dracula' means 'dragon'. These cards represent the pride I have in my species, and my hope to bring us back from extinction. But this monster..." He gestured to Red-Eyes Shadow Dragon. "This one represents the void, the nothingness that awaits me if I fail." He set one card and signaled the end of his turn.
Caspian decided not to make a joke for once, drawing for his turn. "I use the effect of Sea Steel Chain Eel, and banish it, along with Sea Steel Swordfish, to draw 2 cards." He sighed in relief, he had almost all the cards he needed to turn this duel around. "Sea Steel Swordfish's effect lets me search for a low level Sea Steel monster and add it to my hand!"
"I chain Dimensional Barrier!" Noir hit a button on his Duel Disk, a glowing orange barrier circling around Caspian. "You can't Fusion Summon this turn! And if you summon a Fusion Monster from somewhere else, their effects are negated!"
"You know, I was going to suggest you surrender and my team could help you find your parents' killer and bring them to justice, and then maybe we could get you a lighter jail sentence... but now? I'm gonna destroy you." Noir couldn't see Caspian's face, but the Hawaiian man was giving him a death glare that would make the actual Dracula proud.
"I activate the effect of Sea Steel Mermaid!" Caspian slid a card into his discard slot, and there was a spray of seafoam, accompanied by melodic singing. "By banishing another card from my hand, I can special summon Sea Steel Mermaid!"
The seafoam parted, revealing... well, a mermaid. She had silver scales, long blue hair, and tanned skin. In place of the usual seashell bra, she wore a full metallic breastplate, and she carried an anchor the size of her entire body. (ATK 1600)
"You mermaids really like looking at yourselves." Noir rolled his eyes.
"That's racist." Caspian said flatly. "I activate the effect of Sea Steel Pufferfish, which I just banished. I can summon a Sea Steel monster from my graveyard, like the Angelfish I played earlier!" The new monster resembled a normal angelfish, but it appeared to be made out of silver, gold and copper. (DEF 0) "That ends my turn."
(CLP 1200 / SC 9) - (NLP 400 / SC 9)
Noir drew what felt like his last card. This turn would decide everything... "I play End of the Storm!" Shadow Dragon roared, making sound for the first time in the entire duel, before transforming into a black hole. "Now all monsters on the field are destroyed, and we both take 300 damage for each monster we lose!"
"I don't think so! I chain Tears of a Mermaid!" Sea Steel Mermaid buried her face in her hand and began weeping. Her tears transformed into bubbles and began swarming Shadow Dragon, which returned to its original form. "This card not only negates your spell, it forces you to skip your battle phase!"
The armored mermaid stopped crying and winked playfully at Noir, giggling. "So I'm in this for one more turn!"
"Fine, make your move! You won't beat my Dragon!" The Shadow Game was starting to take its toll on Noir. He still had the Dark Card Mama Killa gave him, but he'd wasted his most powerful Speed Spell, and the only card left in his hand was a low level monster that couldn't finish off Caspian's life points.
"This duel ends now!" Caspian looked at his hand and smiled. "I summon Abyss Warrior!" The monster resembled Abyss Soldier, having a muscular humanoid body but the head and tail of a whale (a sperm whale in this case), but instead of a trident, it carried a pair of golden vajra (bladed, hand held weapons from India). (ATK 1800)
"I activate Speed Fusion! So say goodbye to Sea Steel Mermaid and Angelfish, and hello again to Coelacanth!" The prehistoric fish reappeared, staring directly at Noir with the most malice a fish could muster (ATK 2000)
"It doesn't matter what that thing can do, my Shadow Dragon can't be destroyed by card effects. You'll never get passed it."
"Oh but I can!" Caspian boasted. "Power Baton lets me send a monster from my deck to the graveyard, and give Coelacanth its attack points for one turn! Thanks for the help, Barracuda!" (ATK 2000 - 4200)
"You still don't have enough life points!" Noir was getting desperate.
"Actually, I will! I play Speedy Recovery! I gain 200 life points for each of my Speed Counters!" Caspian was bathed in golden light, increasing his life points to 3400. "Now, attack that Hot Topic dragon with Fishious Rend!" Coelacanth lunged at Shadow Dragon.
"I activate the effect of Red-Eyes Time Wizard from my hand!" An edgy version of another classic monster hovered over the duel field, raising its staff high into the air. "I toss a coin, and if it lands on heads, your monster is destroyed and you take damage equal to its ATK! If I get tails, I take no battle damage this turn."
It all came down to this... Time Wizard transformed into a giant coin, spinning rapidly. Caspian and Noir both held their breath, and the coin landed... on tails.
"Thank Eadro!" Caspian sighed. Coelacanth and Shadow Dragon collided, fading into nonexistence. "Well, looks like you're the one on the ropes now, spooky!"
Noir felt his heart beating... which he forgot it could even do. His Ebon Sun pendant glowed, as did his deck. He drew a card, and played it immediately. "I activate Ebon Key! Now the duel ends in a draw!"
"Cheater!" Was all Caspian could say, before everything turned purple.
(DRAW)
Caspian pulled over and parked his Duel Runner, making sure all his cards were still there. "Better check on everyone..." He pulled out his phone and started texting.
"Who's still alive?" He asked. Kim and Tyler both replied, Sabrina remained silent, and an "incoming text" message appeared for Kennedy, but only for a moment. "I don't like that." The fishblood put his phone away and started driving again, desperate to find his boyfriend before something bad happened.
