The following day, the Rangers and Chaku assembled in the Command Centre, all except for Steel and Commander Shaw. They were all sitting around, talking to Chaku.
"So, did you sleep well?" Nate asked him. "How was your room? Was everything…?"
"My quarters were more than adequate, thank you." He interrupted him with a chuckle. "I've spent most of the last couple of years living on a variety of pursuit ships so compared to that, just about anything is like a stay in a luxury hotel."
"Man, I loved camping, but I'm not sure I'd like to go for a couple of years." Zoey commented. "A couple of days with my brothers without the distraction of television and we're pretty much considering options how to murder each other!"
"I'm glad you're settling in." Devon added. "Ryjax might be gone, but we've still got a whole bunch of seriously dangerous weapons unaccounted for."
"And that is going to be today's task." Commander Shaw informed them as she came into the room. They all immediately snapped to attention and saluted her, which she returned quickly. "At ease. As Devon correctly said, we suspect Ryjax's ship is nearby, and if that device he used against you is anything to go by, that means a lot of very dangerous weapons and we want to ensure we get our hands on them before Evox does."
She looked around, furrowing her brows.
"Where's Steel?" She asked.
"Uh, he must just be finishing up his night shift." Ravi suggested.
"Didn't night shift finish about half an hour ago?" Devon asked. Just then, Steel came in, walking slowly, kind of shuffling his feet. He gave a quick salute to Commander Shaw, before sitting in the corner.
"You're late, Steel." She announced.
"I just came off a night shift." He reminded them. "I needed a few minutes."
"To do what?" Ravi asked. "It's not like you need to grab breakfast or sleep or anything."
"I just needed some time." Steel snapped, before looking to Commander Shaw. "Sorry."
"It's alright, Steel." She responded. "Just try not to let it happen again."
"Why am I the only one that's expected to do back-to-back shifts?" He muttered in a low voice as Commander Shaw turned to Joanne.
"Joanne, have you established a search grid?" She asked.
"I have." She informed her, hitting a command. "I've sent a search area to each of your communicators. All going well, we should be able to find the ship before anyone else does."
"All except for you, Chaku." Commander Shaw stated. Chaku just looked at her curiously.
"You don't want me to help with the search?" He asked.
"We wanted to begin the treatments we promised you as soon as we possibly could." She informed him as Meghan entered the room. "I consulted with Meghan, and she believes that she has some ideas that might begin to reverse a great deal of the…"
"I more than just believe; I know I can." Meghan interrupted her. "I've taken a look at the schematics for your implants, most of them are augments to your existing anatomy rather than replacements, so those can be removed quite safely with some surgery which I am more than capable of…"
She looked at Commander Shaw, who had her arms folded and was tapping her foot.
"Oh…uh…I just did it again, didn't I?" She asked. Commander Shaw and the Rangers just nodded. "Commander Shaw, I'm sorry, I'll talk about it at my next session…"
"That's quite alright." She sighed, realising that she had already interrupted, so there really wasn't much point in stopping her while she was on a roll.
"So, the augments should be able to be simply removed, but the things that are replacements like your eye, I should be able to design something that looks a lot closer to your original structures, not to mention the synthetic skin Nate was working on should make the integration almost indistinguishable from the biological components."
"You really think you can make me look like I did?" Chaku asked her.
"I should even be able to match your skin and eye pigment." She told him. "Come with me, we can get started…unless Commander Shaw wants me to have a session with Blaze first…"
"No, that won't be necessary." She sighed, waving them off. As they left, Zoey looked around the others.
"She's getting better." Zoey stated. Devon pulled up a display on his communicator.
"Alright, I'm just going to grab Cruise." Devon told them. "Everyone stay in constant communication."
With that, they all headed out to begin their search.
Meanwhile, in the woods outside of the city, Blaze, Roxy and Kendall teleported in close to the location of the ship. Kendall sighed.
"Alright, the ship is through there." She said, pointing down a trail. "Ryjax didn't exactly hide his collection, so you should find it pretty easy to see all the weapons you're looking for."
"Not so fast, slave." Blaze said, putting his arm around her. Kendall rolled her eyes. If it wasn't for the compliance collar, she could at least try and escape, but Blaze and Roxy were taking full advantage of the fact that she couldn't disobey them, no matter how much she wanted to. "Why don't you go and get them?"
"But the ship is right through there." Kendall pointed out. "And there's a lot of weapons, it'll take hours if only one person is unloading them…even if I did have both hands!"
She held up her hand. As a demonstration of the collar's power over her, Ryjax had ordered Kendall to break two of her own fingers with a lump hammer. She had done what she could to address the situation, making a makeshift splint for her fingers out of what she could find in Scrozzle's workshop, but it would be some time before they properly healed.
"Yeah, but Ryjax was a pretty paranoid guy, so we're sure he's got some kind of gnarly and probably deadly security system." Roxy said, putting her arm around Kendall as well, stroking her cheek with her finger. "You wouldn't want anything to happen to us, would you?"
"Perish the thought." She grumbled sarcastically. "So, you think I can get through his security?"
"You're smart, you'll figure it out." Blaze stated, patting her on the back as they started to walk away, leaving Kendall to her task. "We're just going to enjoy this lovely day for a bit. We'll be back soon."
"Ciao." Roxy added, waving as Kendall walked towards the ship.
Back in Grid Battleforce Headquarters, the real Roxy was sitting in the Mess Hall, reading something while eating out of a large packet of crackers when Ben and Betty showed up. She jumped in fright as they sat down and hurriedly whipped away what she was reading.
"Hey, someone's jumpy." Betty commented. "What are you reading?"
"Uh, nothing too interesting." Roxy said, tucking it away. "What are you two doing here? I thought your shift finished ages ago."
"Yeah, but we can't get to sleep right away after the shift." Betty told her.
"Crackers at this time?" Ben asked, pointing to the packet. Roxy just shrugged.
"I'm hungry!" She told them.
"But you have oatmeal right here." Ben said. "You've not even touched it!" Roxy's lip curled in disgust.
"No thanks." She responded. Ben just shrugged, moving it towards himself.
"Waste not, want not." He said as he started to eat.
"So why did you order it if you weren't going to eat it?" Betty asked.
"I just…my stomach isn't feeling that great." Roxy told them. "I was fine when I came down earlier, but I just sat down and the smell makes me…yeah, no thanks."
"Your loss." Ben said through a mouthful. Roxy just looked between them, before gathering up her things.
"I think I'm just going to…go back to my room." She told them. "Catch you guys later?"
"Later!" Betty called out as Roxy scurried away. "Man, everyone is so weird today. Did you notice Steel was in kind of a mood all night?"
Ben just looked at her and shrugged.
"No, of course you didn't." She responded.
In the Command Centre, Commander Shaw and Joanne were co-ordinating the search.
"There's nothing out here." Devon called in.
"Nothing here either." Ravi added. "Man, Ryjax might have been a brute, but he was good at hiding his stash."
"We need to find that ship." Nate reminded them. "If Evox gets his hands on that collection first, there's no telling how much harm he could cause."
"I'm heading Northwest, but I'm still not seeing…" Zoey started to say, before tailing off. Her search area took her out deep into Pine Ridge Forest. It had been a long time since she'd seen anything other than trees, so it was a little unusual when she finally saw another person. "Guys, I think I've found something."
She started to make her way closer. The person seemed to disappear from sight for a moment, before appearing again a little while later. She was carrying weapons, and seemed to be just appearing and disappearing from nowhere. It was only as she got closer, she got a better look at her. She came out from the trees.
"Kendall?" She asked. Kendall looked up from her task, seeing Zoey.
"Zoey!" She called out.
"What are you doing here?" Zoey asked, before looking down at the weapons on the ground. She looked between them and Kendall, pointing between them wordlessly. Kendall held up her hands defensively.
"Zoey, it isn't what it looks like." She told her.
"So, you're not gathering dangerous weapons from the ship of an intergalactic criminal?" Zoey asked. Kendall just sighed.
"OK, so maybe it's a LITTLE what it looks like." Kendall rushed out. "Zoey, you need to get out of here."
"Kendall, why are you doing this?" Zoey asked. "Why are you stealing alien weapons?"
"Zoey, Blaze and Roxy are around here somewhere, they could be back any minute!" Kendall told her.
"You're working for Blaze and Roxy now?" Zoey shrieked.
"Not by choice!" Kendall told her, tapping her collar. "Ryjax kidnapped me a couple of weeks ago! He put this on me! I have to do whatever they say…"
"A compliance collar!" Zoey gasped, noticing the collar. She could vaguely remember Vargoyle's clone wearing one when Ryjax had him attack them. Kendall just nodded, showing them her hand.
"He made me prove it works by making me do this with a four-pound lump hammer!" Kendall told her. "Get out of here, get the others, they…"
"I think you've said quite enough, don't you slave?" Blaze asked as he arrived. Kendall immediately fell silent. Zoey pulled into a guard as he and Roxy approached. "Well, well, well. Looks like the Rangers have finally caught up."
"Is this all of it?" Roxy asked. Kendall shook her head.
"There's more still inside." Kendall told them. They both glared at her. "Hey, I told you, I'm working with one hand here! You're the ones that decided to leave a one-handed slave to unload a ship by herself."
"The other Rangers are bound to be on the way." Blaze stated. "Go unload the rest of the weapons! I'll deal with…"
"No, wait." Roxy said, an evil smirk crossing her face. "I have a better idea."
She put her hands on Kendall's shoulders and leaned in, close to her ear.
"Slave, why don't you kill the Yellow Ranger for us?" She asked, before looking to Blaze and winking. "That should give us plenty of time to gather the rest of the weapons, don't you think? Have fun you two!"
"Wait, don't…don't do this!" Zoey begged as Roxy waved and they both headed into the ship. "Bitch! Um…Kendall, please…"
"I'm sorry!" Kendall responded as she rushed forward, throwing a kick Zoey's way. Zoey was barely able to get out the way, but she wasn't so lucky with the second attack, which knocked her feet out from under her, sending her to the ground. She looked up in time to see Kendall lifting her foot high above her head, bringing it down in an axe kick. She rolled out of the way just before it hit home.
"Great." She muttered. "This just became a whole lot harder!"
In another part of the city, Nate and Steel were just heading to their transport vehicle when Nate tried to call in.
"Zoey, we're coming to your location." He told her. "Zoey? Zoey, come in!"
He didn't get an answer, but he could hear what sounded like a fight going on in the background. He and Steel got into the transport vehicle.
"Floor it!" Nate told him as he got onto his comms. "Guys, I just tried to reach Zoey, it sounds like she's in trouble!"
Back at the ship, Zoey was finding out that Kendall was every bit as deadly in combat as she was with her mind. It didn't help that Zoey didn't really want to hurt her, but after a while, she was starting to wonder if she'd really have much of a choice.
Kendall bore her to the ground, twisting her arm painfully up her back. She could already feel her shoulder hyper extending, threatening to tear straight out. She grunted and tried to struggle to relieve the pressure, but Kendall was on top of her.
"Kendall, please stop!" Zoey begged her. She was stunned as Kendall let go and started to let her up. She started shaking out her arm, trying to get feeling back into it.
"I'm sorry!" Kendall said for what felt like the thousandth time.
"You just…let go." Zoey stated. "What gives?"
"You asked me to stop." Kendall pointed out. Zoey just looked confused. Kendall tapped the compliance collar. "If there's one thing, I've learned about this thing it's that I have to do what I'm asked to, but people have to be VERY exact about what they ask me to do."
"Roxy told you to kill me." Zoey stated.
"Yes, but she never told me not to accept any orders from you." Kendall told her. "So, when you asked me to stop…"
"You stopped." Zoey concluded. Kendall just nodded. "I wish I'd thought of that sooner."
Just then, they heard an alarm. Zoey looked to her.
"What's that?" She asked.
"Know how I said you have to be REALLY careful about what you ask me to do?" Kendall asked her.
"Yeah?" Zoey asked in response, not liking the sound of where this was going.
"They asked me to get the weapons out of the ship. They didn't want to risk setting off the security system so they got me to do it thinking I could disarm it." Kendall told her. "What they DIDN'T do was tell me I needed to LEAVE it disarmed! I turned it on between trips just in case they got overconfident and tried to take anything from the ship themselves."
"Which means…"
"Which means now is a good time to duck!" Kendall responded as Blaze and Roxy ran out of the ship, carrying what few weapons they could in their arms. They all threw themselves to the ground as the ship exploded.
"SLAVE!" Roxy screamed in anger. Kendall got up, making her way over to her, at which Roxy seized her by the throat. "What did you do?"
"I armed the security system between trips." Kendall told her. "In case someone else tried to steal weapons while I was unloading."
"Yeah, that's a likely story." Blaze said as he grabbed the re-animiser. They heard a roar of engines coming their way. "The Rangers are almost here, quick, grab something and let's get out of here!"
With that, Roxy grabbed the first thing that came to hand, a large, dark sword, and grabbed Kendall in her other hand, before they all teleported out. The Rangers arrived, finding Zoey just starting to get her bearings.
"Zoey, what happened here?" Nate asked her as he helped her up.
"My least favourite androids." She told them. "There's something else, they have Kendall."
"Kendall?" Devon asked. "The Dino Charge Ranger?"
Kendall had helped him some time back, when they discovered that Mayor Daniels was being infected by Evox. She had helped refine the split emitters to be able to separate him from Evox. Zoey just nodded.
"They're controlling her with a compliance collar." Zoey told them. "She doesn't have a choice."
"We have to get her back." Devon agreed. "But first, we need to secure these weapons."
"I'll say we do." Ravi agreed as he picked up a silver staff. "Do you know what this is? This belonged to Lord Zedd, the Emperor of Evil!"
"And this belonged to Sledge." Nate added, picking up a blaster. "Ryjax had that re-animiser. With all of these things…"
"He could have brought back some of the worst beings that ever existed." Devon answered with a shudder. "Alright, let's get this lot loaded up and then we can figure out how we're going to get Kendall back."
Meanwhile, in another dimension, the Dino Charge Rangers were all gathered the lab. They had been searching for Kendall ever since she had been kidnapped, but with no success. It had taken some time, but thanks to the resources at their disposal, between Anton Mercer and Prince Phillipe, they had concluded that Kendall was no longer on Earth.
Matt was keeping his daughter occupied, soothing her as Anton worked on a computer.
"I think I finally found a match." Anton announced. "I've found an energy signature that matches Kendall's Energem in another dimension."
"Another dimension?" Tyler asked.
"Yes, kind of an alternate timeline where things aren't exactly the same as they are here." Anton explained. "After she told us she helped out those other Rangers, I figured it was worth checking other dimensions. It seems like whoever took her has taken her back there."
"So, let's go and get her!" Matt stated.
"It's not exactly that easy." Anton told them. "If nothing else, we can't afford to send everyone. If someone's already attacked us in this dimension, we can't take the risk they won't launch another attack."
"Well, that's not much of a problem, there are ten of us." Riley added. "If some of us go, the rest can stay here in case we're needed."
"I'm going…"
"Matt, I understand." Tyler interrupted him. "But, maybe it's best you sit this one out."
"I need to go and get my wife back!" He replied.
"We understand." Koda said as he came to him. "But, think of Claire. She no have mother right now. Her father should stay here."
"But…"
"Koda do anything for Taku." Koda interjected. Taku was his son. He had been fortunate enough to find a kindred soul, a woman who loved him in his girlfriend Alessandra. Together, they had a son, who Koda had opted to name Taku after the young brother he had fallen into a glacier trying to protect back in his own time. He had found out afterwards through cave paintings that Taku had grown up to become the leader of his tribe, a great and strong leader, and he wanted to honour him by naming his son after him. "But would not leave him with no parent. We bring Kendall home."
"Alright, but bring her back safely." Matt conceded reluctantly. Tyler just nodded.
"Alright, I think four of us should go." Tyler said, trying to weigh up his options. "Koda, you're the best tracker, and you and Ivan have the most experience in going to times and places you aren't familiar with."
He looked around the others, trying to weigh up his options. He eventually looked at Chase.
"What, me?" He asked.
"You're the hot shot, right?" He asked. "The rest of you, stay in touch. We'll call if we need you."
Anton typed some commands into his computer, opening up a portal.
"Alright, here goes nothing!" Tyler said, taking a deep breath as he steeled himself. "Come on guys, it's about to get wild!"
With that, the chosen four all stepped through into the unknown.
A/N: Sorry about the long hiatus, there's been a lot going on here. I'll try to get the next chapter out a lot sooner. Hope you enjoyed it.
