The Rangers were all sitting in the canteen on the Grid Battleforce base, having their breakfast ahead of another day. Zoey was doing some work on a tablet while she chewed on a bagel, while the others were discussing something.
"What do you think Zoey?" Devon asked her.
"Hmm?" She asked, looking up. Devon just sighed.
"You've not been listening, have you?" He asked.
"Sorry, I'm just a little busy." She told them.
"Study?" Nate asked.
"No, not this time. I'm a little behind on the laundry." Zoey grumbled. "The number three machine broke down last week and it's taking the engineering team ages to fix it. I've got a backlog that'll take at least a week to clear up, and that's even if they finish it today."
"Yeah, it sucks that Commander Shaw expects us to actually do these token jobs." Devon agreed. "Do you know how many lightbulbs there are in the Zord Bay? 1,372! I know because I've replaced every single one of them!"
"Come on, it's not so bad." Ravi said cheerfully. "In fact, I think today's going to be great!"
"Yeah, I mean who wouldn't love a job where they get to work out all day?" Devon answered sarcastically.
"You do seem in a really good mood." Nate observed, seeing the look on Ravi's face. "What's going on?"
"Yeah, I think we could all do with some cheering up." Devon commented. "Go on, spill it. What's happening?"
Ravi looked around, like he was ensuring the coast was clear, before reaching into his pocket, pulling out a little box. Zoey immediately dropped her tablet.
"Is that...what I think it is?" She asked him. He had a bright grin on his face as he nodded.
"The jeweller finally finished it." He told them. "I've spoken to Ben and Betty, and come lunch time, I'm finally going to ask Roxy."
"That's great, man! Congratulations!" Devon said, reaching across and slapping his shoulder.
"Hey, she's not said yes, yet." Ravi chuckled. "Don't tempt fate."
"I don't think it's really tempting fate; she's going to be thrilled! She'll say yes for sure!" Zoey assured him.
"I really hope so." Ravi answered. "She's not really that great in the mornings, but I told her I'd meet her here for lunch, and I've already arranged with Ben and Betty to set the mood."
"Ben and Betty?" Devon asked. "Aren't they working night shift?"
"Yeah, but they said they'd help set everything up." Ravi responded.
Zoey's communicator bleeped.
"You're go for Zoey." She answered.
"Zoey, it's Joanne." Joanne told her. "I just got word back from the team, your number three washer is finally back online."
"Thanks, Joanne." Zoey said as she shut off the communicator, gathering her things. "Well, that's my cue. Make sure you let me know when this is happening, OK? I really want to be there when it does!"
"I will." Ravi assured her.
As the Rangers started to leave, Roxy came into the canteen, seeing them all heading out.
"Hey there, I thought you were going to lie in." Ravi said as he saw Roxy.
"I just couldn't settle." She told him.
"Well, do you want something to eat or...?"
"I think I'm good." She told him. "I just don't want to hang around in the room right now."
"OK, but we're still on for lunch, right?" Ravi asked her.
"Yeah, yeah, absolutely." Roxy answered him. "Nate, can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Oh, right, I guess." Nate said as he sat back down. Roxy just looked to the others as they all left, making sure they were all on their way out before she looked back to Nate. "So, what can I do for you?"
"Nate, there's something I really need to do, but I need you to keep it quiet." She told him. "I'm calling in that favour from when I found your computer..."
"Roxy, you don't need to do that, I'm happy to help." Nate told her. "So, what is it?"
"There's something I need done, a test." She told him.
"A test?" Nate asked. "You're studying in your spare time?"
"Not that kind of test." She clarified. "It's a medical test..."
"Is everything alright?" Nate asked her. "I could take you to the med bay! I can call Ravi..."
"No, and definitely not! Not yet!" She rushed out. "Look, it's not something I want to go to the med bay about, not until I talk to Ravi, but I was hoping you'd have something in your lab that could help."
"Well, it depends what it is." Nate assured her. "But if you're sick, then the med bay really would be the best..."
"Nate, it's not like that." She told him. "I'd like you to do...a sonogram."
"A sonogram?" He asked, before suddenly his eyes opened wide and he started flailing. "A sonogram? As in...you're..."
"Nate, please, keep it down!" She begged him. "I'll go to the med bay, of course, but I just haven't been resting too well lately and I wanted to make sure things were alright before I told Ravi and then once he knows, of course I'll go to the medical bay."
"But you told me..."
"I told you because I wouldn't even know where to begin trying to work anything in your lab." She told him. "If I could, I would have liked Ravi to be the first to know, but I just want to be sure. Can you keep this to yourself?"
"Alright." Nate sighed. "Come with me, I'll just need to set some things up."
Roxy reached across, hugging him tightly.
"You're the best, Nate!" She answered him. "So, should I follow or...?"
"Give me about half an hour to get what I need set up." He told her.
"I'll be there then." She assured him.
As he left, Nate just gulped, feeling his chest tighten. He had worked with classified information and technology for years, but there were times he was incredibly uncomfortable with secrets.
Elsewhere on the base, Ben and Cole were in the gym. Ben was never much of a gym body, that much was pretty obvious from his build, but like everyone else on the base, he needed to pass health tests and physical exams, and liked to make sure he was able to keep up when he needed to.
Cole though was something of an Adonis on the base, with the kind of build, and chiselled features that could land him on the cover of magazines or on a catwalk if he wanted to try something other than military service, and had him with a number of admirers on the base. Of course, there was only one person he had his eye on.
"Come on, Ben, come on, just two more reps!" Cole called out, encouraging Ben in his workout. "This is a personal best, come on, just one more, come on!"
Ben had to admit that there was a little bit of an appeal in going to the gym now with Cole. He couldn't believe his luck when he found out that Cole was into him. He'd kept a part of his life hidden for so long from everyone, his friends, his colleagues, his parents…even his sister had been taken a little by surprise when he finally told her that he was gay. It was something he had difficulty in being open about because the Burkes had a long family history in the military, with his dad being a decorated and accomplished General.
Ben and Betty were something of black sheep in the family to begin with. It wasn't that they didn't try, they were both more than eager to serve, having been brought up with the military since they were born. Even Commander Shaw often said that if everyone on the base had half the will and determination that the Burke twins had they would have an army that would destroy virtually any enemy in a matter of moments. Of course, they did lack some key skills and talents, but they more than made up for it with the fact they were willing to help out in any way possible. Ben had always hoped that he would make his father proud of his service, but the fact he was more of a career gopher than anything else on the base made him wonder if his dad would ever be able to be proud of him. He worried that telling him the truth about himself would give him one more reason to be ashamed of him.
Ben let out a huge cry as he lifted the bar bell for the last time, placing it up on the rack. Cole applauded and helped him up off the bench.
"That's my boy, two hundred and ten pounds!" He complimented him. "Dude, you're almost up to what Ravi benches!"
"I think you're exaggerating." Ben chuckled.
"No, I'm serious, you were killing it there!" Cole told him, kneeling in front of him, putting his hands on his shoulders. "You've increased your personal best by almost fifty pounds in a month, that's amazing!"
"Yeah, well, I've got a pretty amazing coach." Ben replied, pulling himself off the bench and into Cole's arms. Betty just groaned.
"Guys, seriously, do you need to?" She asked. "I'm the biggest Ben/Cole shipper on the base, but seriously, the PDA is a little distracting when I'm working out."
"Sorry." Cole answered. It was a little awkward at first, Betty had liked Cole, and thanks at least in part to Roxy's encouragement, she had done everything she could to spend time with him in the hopes of catching his eye. She'd been completely oblivious to the fact that Cole was gay. It did sting a little finding out that Cole was into her brother, but now that she knew that truth about Ben and saw how happy Cole had made him, she was able to look back on the whole thing a lot more philosophically. "Come on, let's hit the showers. If you two want at least some sleep before you do that thing for Ravi, you should probably get going."
Just then, Ben's phone bleeped. He went over to it, picking it up.
"What's up bro?" Betty asked him. "Another admirer?"
"It better not be." Cole chuckled. "I just got out of the hospital wing, and I don't need stressing over competition putting me back in there."
Ben though didn't answer. He just looked a little shaken.
"Bro?" Betty asked.
"It's from dad." He told her. "It says he's coming to the base later this week."
"Oh, that'll be nice." Betty answered cheerfully. "It's been a while since we've had dinner together."
"It…um…" Ben started to stammer. "It says that he heard I'm dating someone. He said he wanted to meet them."
Betty and Cole just looked to him.
"Ben?" Betty asked him.
"I'm…" He started to say, before heading off out of the gym. Betty went to Cole.
"Are you alright?" She asked as he gathered his workout gear.
"I did know that Ben wasn't out yet." Cole admitted. "I know a lot of this is kind of new to him."
Betty did appreciate Cole's patience with her brother. A lot of this was still new territory for Ben, and Cole had assured him that he was willing to be patient and let him take his own time in getting used to things. He cared about him enough to be prepared to let him get used to the idea of a relationship, but Betty couldn't help thinking it still had to sting a little that he hadn't even told General Burke yet.
"Ben's just nervous, he's always been kind of a daddy's boy." Betty assured him. "I'm sure once dad comes over, he'll be able to talk."
"Yeah." Cole sighed. "Anyway, you should get going. I'll clean up here."
Betty just nodded and gathered her gear, opting to head straight for her dorm to shower there. She needed to be ready later in the day for Ravi's surprise.
Speaking of surprises, in the lab, Roxy was standing in a machine, while Nate did some work on a nearby computer. She looked a little nervous, though that was understandable.
"Nate, this doesn't look like any of the scans I've seen on the television." She told him.
"The proper machines are in the medical bay; I could get access to them but not without other personnel being there and maybe figuring out what we're doing." He told her. "This is something I use to detect internal anomalies with the Rangers. It's a little…stretch of what it's supposed to do, but with the right parameters, I should be able to get it to serve the purpose."
He continued with the scans, noticing that Roxy was more than a little apprehensive. She had only admitted to him that she was pregnant because she needed him to perform the scans, but other than that, as far as he knew, she'd been dealing with the pregnancy by herself up until now. He and Zoey were always careful, and they were taking things slowly, but he couldn't help thinking what they would do if it was Zoey in that situation. He didn't get the impression that this was something Roxy had planned for.
"Alright, just a few more adjustments and I think I'll be able to…" He said as he worked with the computer. He started to back away from it. "…and that's perfect! OK, Roxy, I just need to ask you to stand as still as you can for about a minute or so."
"You have met me, right?" She asked nervously. Nate just laughed in response. It was no secret that Roxy was an active and playful person.
"I'm just making a little recording that should allow you to see it." Nate told her. "Alright, and…that should be enough. You can exit the machine."
Roxy stepped out of the machine while Nate worked to clear up the footage as much as he could. She came over to him, just as he got the screen ready.
"Are you ready to see it?" He asked. Roxy took a deep breath.
"As ready as I'll ever be." She answered. Nate moved aside, letting her stare at the screen.
"Now, don't be too disappointed if you can't figure out everything right away, these are pretty difficult to…"
"Oh my God." Roxy gasped. "That's our baby."
"It's coming along really well, it's looking healthy and growing normally." Nate assured her. "I don't think it'll be too long before you're showing."
"Is that the head?" She asked him.
"Uh…the other end actually." Nate told her. "Alright, looking at this, there's the heartbeat and there's an arm."
"My God." She said again, smiling brightly. "That's really…that's really our baby."
"I can make a copy of this for you to keep." Nate assured her. She just nodded.
"I think Ravi will really want to see this once I finally tell him." Roxy said, running her fingers over the screen. "Thank you, Nate."
"Anything to help." Nate answered.
A little later in the day, Nate was sitting in the canteen, waiting for the surprise. Ravi had arranged with Roxy to meet her there, where he was planning to propose to her.
Zoey had been the one to figure out his plan, back when he was able to figure out the pattern of the jewellery store heists. He'd since told the others, saying that he wanted all of Roxy's friends to be there when he popped the question. Ben and Betty were setting up an area of the canteen for the occasion, putting out a fancy tablecloth and candles, along with some old, ornate crockery and cutlery.
Nate was sitting, eating a sandwich as he tried to imagine how things were going to go. He didn't like keeping secrets from friends, but he understood that Roxy needed to be the one to tell Ravi that they were expecting a child. He almost jumped out of his skin as Zoey plopped down next to him.
"Hey there." She greeted him, putting her arm around him. "How's your day been?"
"Oh, it's had its…moments." He said as he tried to avoid the conversation. Zoey just looked over to the table in glee.
"Man, I can't believe Ravi's finally going to do this!" Zoey squealed. "I've been about to burst knowing that this was coming! Do you know how hard it's been keeping this from Roxy?"
"Oh, I think I can imagine!" Nate said a little nervously.
"I just can't wait to see the look on her face!" She said giddily. Devon and Blaze came into the canteen in workout gear, at which she rolled her eyes.
"Really guys? That's how you're dressing for this?" Zoey asked them.
"What? I just got out the gym!" Devon answered.
"Come on, you know how important this is! You should go and get changed!" Zoey admonished them.
"Zoey, it's not a big deal, it's not like it's the WEDDING today!" Blaze reminded her.
"Ugh, you guys, you have no sense of occasion!" She grumbled. "Great, and now you're too late, here's Ravi!"
Ravi came into the canteen, wearing his dress uniform. The others let out a few whistles seeing him.
"Now that is sharp!" Devon complimented him. Ravi just took a twirl.
"Well, you know, I'm only planning on doing this once, so I wanted to do it right." He told them. "Roxy just sent a message to say she's on her way."
"I can't wait to see the look on her face, she's going to be so surprised!" Steel added.
"Guys, she's coming!" Joanne called out from where she was keeping watch at the door. They all immediately scattered and tried to look as casual as possible.
Roxy walked in, carrying a tablet. She couldn't help watching the video over and over. She wanted to have it queued up so that she could show him once she told him. She arrived, looking around for him.
"Hey there!" She greeted him, coming over. "Wow, someone got dressed up! What's going on?"
"Roxy, so glad you made it!" Ravi greeted her.
"Ravi, everyone's here." She noted. "Um…Ravi, I didn't know everyone was going to be here, I really wanted to talk…"
"Please, just let me finish, I promise this is going to be worth it!" He answered as he guided her to the table. Ben and Betty stood by, pouring them both drinks as they sat down.
"Ravi, this is all…" She stammered. "Ravi, I really think we should…"
"Roxy, please, let me go first." Ravi told her. He took her hand gently. "Roxy, you have been the greatest thing that's ever happened to me. You came into my life and completely blindsided me. You're just absolutely amazing, and now, I honestly couldn't imagine my life without you."
"This is it!" Zoey whispered to Nate. "I love surprises…"
"Oh, then you're not going to be disappointed." Nate assured her.
Ravi slipped down off his chair, getting on one knee next to Roxy. He reached into his pocket.
"Roxanne Collins, would you do me the honour of spending the rest of our lives together?" He asked her. Everyone waited with baited breath. Roxy just stared at the ring, unable to believe what was happening. She was so focused on her situation she hadn't seen any of this coming. She took some deep breaths.
"Roxy?"
"Yes!" She answered. "Yes, I absolutely will marry you, but…there's something I need to tell you."
The others were already celebrating as Ravi put the ring on her finger.
"Roxy, whatever it is, I can't imagine it being any better than this." He stated. "You've just made me the happiest…"
"Ravi, I'm pregnant!" She told him. The room suddenly went completely silent. Ravi just stared at her, completely at a loss for words. In the corner, Zoey's mouth hung open.
"OK, I think Roxy's was better." Steel remarked. Roxy put down the tablet, playing the footage for Ravi. He still hadn't been able to say anything.
"Ravi, please, say something." She begged him. He didn't need to. He just got up of his knee, and held her in a tight embrace.
