Chapter 1: Carl's Outburst

"You're making a mistake! He didn't rape that girl!" Carl Clinton yelled in the middle of the squad room, furious.

"Mr. Clinton, you need to calm down," Fin responded as he watched the tall, broad man pace back and forth. He ran his hand through is dark hair before turning back to Fin.

"Not until you release my father."

"That's not going to happen."

"He didn't lay a hand on that girl."

"Your father is being charged. He's going away for life."

"I'm telling you he's innocent."

"Then have him take it up with his lawyer," Olivia intervened, backing up her detective. "I know it's hard to hear but the evidence against him is overwhelming. Your father is guilty."

The man stared at her for a moment, his blood boiling in anger. He looked from Olivia to Fin, before his eyes trailed over to Amanda and Kat who stood behind them at their desk. Carl took a moment before he looked back at Olivia and shook his head, took a deep breath, and relaxed his shoulders.

"You're going to regret this," he said calmly.

"Is that a threat?" Fin shot back at him in a defensive tone.

Carl smirked and shook his head before he turned and left the precinct without another word.

Fin turned to Olivia and sighed as he saw her expression. She didn't have to say anything, he'd worked with her long enough he knew what she was thinking. He understood someone's need to protect their family, but how someone could so blindly defend a serial killer when the evidence was stacked against them was beyond him.

Earl Clinton was guilty, and there was no doubt in their minds of the fact. Over twenty rape and murder cases matched his M.O, and they could positively I.D. him to at least twelve of those victims. Fin had sat in the interrogation room with his Captain, and Clinton didn't even try to lie. Every picture they showed him, he just smirked – as though he was recalling his encounters, enjoying it, reliving it.

"You're going away for the rest of your life for what you did to these women," Olivia had said to him, hatred in her voice.

Earl had just smiled at her, "I wouldn't count on it."

Fin held his composure but wanted nothing more than to smack the smirk right off his face. He could tell Olivia was using every ounce of restraint to do the same. He seemed so confident, so cocky. Fin couldn't wait until his day at court. To see his face when the reality set in that he was going away for life would be priceless. He could never understand the arrogance of these psychopaths. He hadn't an ounce of remorse of fear in him. He just sat in the chair smugly.

They hadn't even had time to move him into holding before they left the interrogation room and heard yelling. They made their way down the hall to find his forty-year-old son, causing an uproar. Fin tried to sound as calm as he could, from his years of experience he always approached situations like those with caution. You never knew what someone planned to do. For all he knew, Carl Clinton had brought a gun. To his surprise he just left. His words didn't sit well with Fin though. Although it was just a comment, it sounded threatening. You never knew what someone was capable of.

Fin sighed and turned to the other detectives.

"What the heck was that?" Kat asked, still in shock from the quick but eventful interaction.

"He's convinced his father is innocent," Amanda replied. "Some people are ignorant to reality."

"I kind of feel bad for him," Kat responded. Quick to continue when everyone looked at her, "I'm just saying. You know, you love your parents and hold them in high regard onto to find out they've been murdering people for years? It's a lot to stomach. I get the anger."

"Well, either way you shouldn't be coming into a precinct making threats," Fin responded.

"Good job today everyone," Olivia said as she came out of her office with her coat and bag.

"You too, Cap," Fin responded. "Got any plans tonight?"

"Heading home to Noah," she responded with an exhausted sigh. After these last few days she wanted nothing more than to take a long bath, curl up on the couch and watch cartoons with her son. "How about you?"

"Not much, just looking forward to some R&R," he smirked.

"I think I'll pick up pizza for the girls tonight. Bring them a nice surprise," Amanda responded.

"No Carisi? I thought he was coming to meet you?"

"Naw, he called. He's preparing for a deposition coming up and wants to give the case another look tonight so just me and the girls."

"Well, I've got a date tonight," Kat responded as she stood, "so I'm heading out too."

"Amanda, you coming?" Olivia asked as Fin and Kat stood ready to go.

"You guys go ahead. I just want to finish up this paperwork. Otherwise it'll be hanging over my head," she responded.

"Do you want me to wait to walk you out?"

"No, go home to Noah. I'm fine, I'll only be another ten minutes or so."

"Okay, have a good night. Get some rest," Olivia responded.

Amanda nodded as everyone turned to leave. She sighed as she looked back down and her computer typing. She wanted to get the information into the system while it was fresh in her mind. She sat at her desk for about fifteen minutes before she finally sighed and closed the laptop. She raised her arms and stretched, leaning back in her chair with a wave of relief. She was finally done. She could go home, open a beer, hug her girls, and relax.

She stood and grabbed her coat off the back of her chair and her bag from the top drawer of her desk. She took out her phone to call her sitter to let her know she was going to grab some food then head home for the night.

Amanda popped her phone into her purse as she got off the elevator and headed towards her car. She sighed as she pulled the zipper on her jacket up, it was cooler than she expected. She reached into her pocket to grab her car keys when suddenly she gasped. Dropping her keys and her bag, her hands immediately flew up and grabbed onto the arms that held her from behind. She struggled as she felt a cloth against her mouth. She tried to hold her breath and break free of her assailant but whoever had hold of her was too strong. She kicked her legs and tried reaching back to scratch at his face, hit him, anything that would cause him to release her. As she struggled against him, she began to feel lightheaded. She couldn't hold her breath any longer. Her legs became weak and her arms heavy. She felt her body giving out and her mind fuzzy as she attempted to hold onto consciousness. Suddenly, she felt her body go completely limp as darkness overcame her.
