Chapter 14 "Skonn"
My son's attachment to earth woman Amanda Grayson was impermissible. Nor did I understand it. Long ago, I decided that humans were emotional, unpredictable, irrational, and unintelligible beings with whom I did not want to interact. I had contempt for them in general. Fortunately, my profession did not require much interaction with them. Sarek's, however, did, but I would not have imagined that it would have led to this outcome.
Vulcans greatly value honor and duty. Nevertheless, I could not comprehend why my youngest son, Sarek, wouldn't follow it when it came to remarriage. He should follow his family's wishes for him to remarry a Vulcan woman. Although my son's first marriage to T'Rea was unsuccessful, there was no reason to let that halt him from mating again. It was highly illogical.
Despite its fallacy, Sarek did blame me for the collapse of his first marriage because I arranged it. It was most logical for me to find a mate for him that would benefit both families. There wasn't a way for me to predict that T'Rea would want an annulment fourteen years into the marriage because she wanted to enter kolinahr. Sarek's displeasure was due to imaginary embarrassment and a proverbial black mark on his character, and no amount of reasoning from me seemed to eliminate it. He had rejected any notion of remarriage for almost seven years until now with Amanda Grayson?
Ben Walker first alerted me of the enchantment between Sarek and that woman after his wedding. The Earth's sub ambassador to Vulcan had noticed signs of mutual affection between the two in his interactions at the Embassy.
One month ago, I wanted to speak to Sarek about my search for a suitable bond-mate, a Vulcan, for him and stopped by his office in the early evening. As I waited, a Vulcan working in the office introduced the sub ambassador from Earth to Vulcan, who happened to visit. After the assistant left Sarek's office, Mr. Walker slyly remarked with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes,
"The Ambassador seems to have made a connection, Sir. I am sure you are happy."
Raising an eyebrow, I Requested clarification.
"He and Miss Grayson seem particularly well suited for courtship. Congratulations," Mr. Walker responded, feigning innocence. Evidently, he enjoyed relaying information that would shock me. Walker also didn't mind being deceitful.
"I am not aware of any courtship," I coldly responded, clasping my hands behind my back and wringing them in extreme perturbation. However, I did not outwardly display any emotion because that would be illogical.
"Even though Amanda chose the Ambassador over me, I wish them all the happiness in the world. She and I were supposed to marry, our families agreed even. Amanda fell in love with your son, and I guess he did the same with her."
Even though Vulcans are to remain calm at all times, I felt my mouth drop as Mr. Walker persisted in giving me these additional details,
"The Federation promoted me to be the Ambassador to the Tellurites. However, I wish to say goodbye and congratulations to your son before I leave Vulcan for good tomorrow. Live Long and Prosper, sir."
"Congratulations on your promotion, Mr. Walker," I answered, but I could barely return the greeting to him with the influx of information.
"My son 'in love' with Amanda Grayson of all people. She is a meek and unintelligible human," I disbelievingly questioned myself. Back and forth, I paced the room for four-point-nine minutes before deciding that I was too furious with Sarek to speak to him at present.
Before my shuttlecraft left, I peered out of the window. I saw Sarek enter the Embassy with Miss Grayson in the distance, but they could not view me as I was too far away.
Her two light pink lips were turned up in a smile like most humans, and I saw my son's hand affectionately grasp hers. The look on his face displayed a fondness for that lady. Consequently, my stomach felt like it turned upside down, and I felt nauseous.
I heavily reflected and meditated on the situation with Sarek and Miss Grayson. My son never mentioned it in our interactions, but we rarely saw each other. His responsibilities as Ambassador kept him preoccupied continually.
Besides, I certainly did not know how to broach the subject, nor did I have the solution. I hoped Sarek would logically conclude that Miss Grayson was ill-suited for him. Moreover, Mr. Walker seemed vindictive when he relayed the information to me joyfully..
All that changed until my sister T'Pau disclosed privately to me that Sarek and Miss Grayson were courting, and I realized the true gravity of the situation.
Now I had to confront her.
What's the conversation between Skonn and T'Pau going to be like you think? Any thoughts?
