New Beginnings Chapter 4:
"How long do we have to stay in this Kami forsaken tree?" A short white-haired demon said to his companion. His golden eyes glancing towards barrier. He was lazily laying on their tree branch, arms and legs dangling, stomach against the rough bark. He almost thought about sleeping as he was comfortable. However, he'd rather be in his hut on his tatami mat. Not babysitting.
"Quiet your complaints. You understand why we are here." His companion growled. Her raven black hair was braided down her back, touching the base of her spine. Her chocolate brown eyes captured his interest as it always did.
"You do not usually interfere in your visions." He said, mildly interested. She had tried to change the course of fate four times before and sometimes had made the situation worse. A few centuries ago, she had stopped, after being the cause of a couple natural disasters. He hoped he wouldn't be dragged into another scheme that resulted in changing the future for the worse. He snorted in amusement, oracle indeed.
Her aura felt his mild amusement and danced with his playfully. She marveled still at the way they became one. There was once a time she did not believe they could. Most demon kind long since forsaken the mating bond. Rarely it occurred these days, demons too proud to share their life essence with each other. Opting to rut and reproduce with each other, but never fully committing. She briefly wondered if demons remembered what a mate bond was.
"This girl is different. I've never seen one person have this many fate outcomes. I do know if this one stops her before she reaches her destination, the West will fall. I happen to like my home. I'm not about to let that Southern bastard rise in power." She muttered darkly. She narrowed her eyes at him and looked towards the barrier she'd erected. She nearly rolled her eyes as she looked at the hanyou waving his sword towards her barrier. His sword had unusual powers that allowed him to break barriers. She listened to the string of curses as his pitiful tirade continued. She had not met many who could break her barriers. It was always amusing to watch them try though.
"Mate that does not answer my inquiry about the tree. I'm much too old to laze about in this manner." He grumbled, shifting a little. He looked back at the barrier once more, noting the half demon had finally passed out in exhaustion.
He was mildly impressed that the halfling had been attacking the barrier for three whole days without pause. Despite his demon blood he was still half mortal. In his experience hanyous' usually wear down faster than this. His mate's barrier was strong, rendering a full demon spent in a weeks' time.
"Once the Miko leaves the taijiya village, she will get to where she needs to be." His mate answered cryptically. "Not a moment before."
"So, she's not to be with the hanyou is she? Shame." He clicked his tongue. "It would be nice to have such a powerful ally in the family." He mused.
"I cannot see her future mate. It may prove to be the hanyou in the end. I get a sense that it is not to be though. The visions show me a powerful demon. I feel his demonic aura. This hanyou is strong, he may get stronger, yet it is not matched to the demon." She said thoughtfully. "I cannot place the feeling, but it feels familiar somehow."
"You do not know if it a full demon or not?" He inquired quizzically.
"No. I have seen the hanyou to grow powerful in the fate alternatives. He cannot be ruled out completely. It's just a feeling I have."
"Still a shame." He said again and closed his golden eyes. Suddenly he had a feeling there was much more his little mate was leaving out.
"Once she resumes her journey, we must hurry home." His mate said. Her tone had an undercurrent of worry. "Do you believe we can make it there in four days?"
He cracked an eye open at the urgency he heard. He sighed. Of course, they could make it in four days, but it would be rough. He was not the young demon anymore. Although his appearance was that of a middle-aged man, he was ancient. Unusually old for even his kind. While demons did have a long life span it still ended eventually. The more powerful the demon, the longer the lifespan, if they do not get cut down before they reach full potential. Unfortunately, many great demons end up losing life over petty disagreements. Especially in his own bloodline.
"Yes, love, but why the urgency?" he asked furrowing his brows. The breeze tousled his tresses, and he knew he'd be pulled into sleep. When you are old naps are most enjoyable. He felt his mate's warm hand caress his forehead. Her aura was emitting a deep love. He rumbled in pleasure at her touch.
"We have a guest to greet." She said softly but he could feel the satisfied grin, through the bond. Finally, an understanding swept through him, and he allowed himself to sleep under his mate's light touches.
