OBI-WAN
"Is there nothing that can be done?" Obi-Wan asked the nurse. He and Qui-Gonn were sitting in a small waiting area in the hospital wing of the Palace on Naboo. Queen Amidala stood opposite them, looking out the tall windows. Obi-Wan had gotten to his feet after hearing of Thalia's condition.
"She is going to live. She will make a full recovery, but this is the price." The nurse said calmly. "While the blast was mainly a flesh wound, it did do some internal damage. We repaired what we could and she will be able to live a normal life. But she will never be able to conceive a child."
For about the thousandth time that day, Obi-Wan rubbed his hand against his jaw.
Thalia loved children, she was a teacher, and he'd seen how good she'd been with Korna.
"Does she know?" He asked and the nurse nodded. "Can I see her?"
"She's resting." She replied curtly, but at Obi-Wan's pleading face she sighed and gestured for him to follow her.
He followed her into the first room on the left. He paused in the doorway when he saw Thalia lying on the bed, her hair folded neatly beneath her and with a white sheet tucked under her shoulders so her arms were free to lie on the mattress.
Behind him, the nurse stepped out of the room and Obi-Wan moved slowly to sit in the chair beside Thalia. She was asleep and looked so peaceful. At this point he didn't care. He reached out and took her hand, clasping it between both of his. In the jumble of fingers, he brought her hand up to his lips and pressed them against her knuckles.
"I have failed you." He began gripping her hand tightly. "I am so incredibly sorry. I lost sight of what was important. I lost sight of my mission." Obi-Wan chuckled slightly, knowing how foolish he was probably about to sound. "You were always so much more than a mission. Master Yoda has always said that there's nothing wrong with feeling certain feelings and that it's only natural. But I have never had to face such feelings before, and I am unsure of what to do. I know what I should do, but I don't know if I am strong enough to do it."
Obi-Wan watched as slowly, a tear made it's way down her cheek. Keeping both his hands around her's, he lent forward and pressed his lips to Thalia's cheek, her tear wetting his lips. He hovered by her face for only a short moment before sitting back in the chair.
"I don't know if you can hear me. I'm not even sure I want you to hear. Perhaps it's for the best." Obi-Wan sniffed. He clutched her hand to his chest and rested his forehead against her should, sighing heavily. "I am so sorry." He breathed, before shaking himself and placing her hand back against the mattress. He got to his feet and took one finally look at Thalia before leaving the room.
Unbeknownst to him, Thalia had heard everything.
