"Lalalala, putting up some posters, lalalala~" Star sung out as she hung up a few posters she recently bought in her room to give it that extra flair. Some were of anime, some were of bands, and others were of video games she's grown fond of while on earth. A store at the mall was having a deal on this kind of stuff so Star and Lincoln made sure they didn't miss it while it lasted, and they walked away with quite the impressive haul. "Making my room look more awesome, yeah, yeah, yeeeeeah."
But unfortunately, Star was gonna have to put her poster hang up song on hold as she heard her mirror ringing. When Star looked to the caller ID on her mirror…she couldn't say she was too thrilled. "Receiving Call from Mom!" Her mirror informed her, causing Star's mood to take a quick and sudden nosedive.
"Great…" Star groaned as she set the poster she was about to hang up down and went up to her mirror. She hasn't seen her mom since the incident with Mr. Candle and quite frankly that was a day she would rather forget for multiple reasons. But she knew that ignoring her moms call was just gonna cause more problems, so she just had to smile and get this over with and hope it wasn't gonna last long. Star took a deep breath to get ready for whatever her mom had to say, put on a fake smile, and answered it. "Hey mom, what's going on?"
"Nothing much sweetie, things have been rather calm in Mewni lately." Moon said with her usual regal tone, but there was a hint of satisfaction in her voice. Honestly things really have been going well in Mewni lately. No monsters have been bothering the Mewmans, recent meetings with the other kings and queens have gone well, and that gang of giant rats that have been known for robbing Mewmans passing by their territory have seemingly disappeared. "Things have been quite well here."
"Oh…well that's good to hear." Star spoke a bit slow as she looked around awkwardly. She…honestly wasn't expecting that. She was expecting her mom to call her because something was wrong…or telling her to follow some princess code bullshit. "So, why did you call me then if everything's fine?"
"Well, since you most likely forgot, I'm calling to remind you of a special event." Moon informed her daughter, making Star raise an eyebrow. "The Butterfly and Johansen family reunion is scheduled for tomorrow."
"Greeeat…" Star let out in response. The family reunion. Six hours of her mom's family and her dad's family getting on each other's nerves. Just then Star remembered something she had planned for tomorrow and quickly protested. "But me and Lincoln were gonna have an anime binge party tomorrow!"
"Well, I'm sorry but the annual gathering is tomorrow, and you WILL be there Star." Moon had to resist rolling her eyes at that. Did her daughter seriously think that an anime binge party, she didn't know what it was, but it was probably some childish earth event, was more important than the annual reunion with her and her husband's family? "This isn't up for debate; you're not getting out of this."
"Uuughh...fiiiiine." Star knew she wasn't gonna be able to get out of this no matter what she did.
"Good." Moon nodded in satisfaction; glad her daughter was going along with this even if it was obviously begrudgingly. "I'll be sending a carriage to pick you up at noon tomorrow. Be ready."
And with that the call ended as Moon hung up on her daughter, not giving Star a chance to respond. Once her mom could no longer see her, Star let out a loud groan as she started to glow purple a bit. "Star?" Lincoln's voice came from the hallway below, the Loud boy hearing Star's groan. "Everything ok in there?"
Star let out a sigh as she hugged herself. "No…" She admitted, being honest with Lincoln about how she was feeling right now.
"Oh boy I'm coming in." The hatch to Star's room soon open and Lincoln quickly climbed into the princess's room, and he immediately saw Star was glowing purple. "What's wrong?"
"Sorry…" Star apologized to him as she went to go sit on her bed, Star's body sinking rather deeply into the mattress. "Looks like we're gonna have to reschedule our binge party…"
"Oh shoot really?" Lincoln couldn't help but be disappointed in that. They were really looking forward to that. They finally had a day where nothing would be going on and all his other sisters would be out of the house doing their own things and both his parents would be at work. That kind of thing didn't happen every day and Lincoln and Star wanted to take advantage of that. "What came up?"
"Some event back home." Star answered, disinterest clear in her voice. "Every year the Butterfly's and Johansen's meet up for some big lunch and of course I have no choice but to attend."
"Johansens?" Lincoln rose his brow at first before remembering something. "Oh right isn't your dad a Johansen?"
"Yep…" Star sighed out as she rested her head on her hand.
"Well, hey that doesn't sound so bad." Lincoln said in an attempt to cheer Star up. Sure, it sucked they were gonna have to save their binge party for another day, but a family reunion could be pretty neat. "I thought family reunions were usually fun.
"Not mine Lincoln..." Star told the white head with a frown. There was usually only one thing that could be fun at her family reunions, but it was completely random if it happened or not. "The Johansens and Butterflies don't really get along with each other."
"Really?" Lincoln asked as he sat down next to Star. "Why not?"
"Well imaged if some rich snob had to interact with a dirty crazy person and multiply that by like 15." Star gave Lincoln the best thing she could think of to compare her family reunions with. "That's basically my family reunion."
"Oooooh…" Lincoln let out slowly. That…didn't sound like a good time after all.
"Yep…" Star fell onto her bed and just looked up at the ceiling with a frown on her face. "That's just my family…"
Lincoln looked down at Star as he tried to think of ways to cheer her up. That…was quite the predicament Star was in. Having to cancel there plans as well as being forced to go to an event she really didn't want to go too. Just kinda sucked that she had to do this on her own…or did she. "Well…" Lincoln smiled a bit as an idea came to him. "How about I go with you?"
"Huh?" Star was taken off guard a bit by Lincoln's suggestion, her purple glow vanishing. She even sat back up to look him properly.
"Well if we gotta cancel our plans then I'm free," Lincoln told her with a smile. His entire plan tomorrow was just spending time with Star and, even if they would be doing something radically different, they could still do that. "Maybe me being there will liven things up for ya a bit."
"Are you sure?" Star really appreciated Lincoln's offer, but she didn't want him to drag himself to her boring family stuff when he could be doing something else a lot more fun. "You don't have to. You can just hang out with Hekapoo or something."
"Star I'm not gonna let you handle this alone." Lincoln told her firmly with a smirk as he put a hand on her shoulder. "Besides this is a family gathering right? As far as I'm concerned, we're family so I'm going with ya sis~"
"…Hehehehe." Star found herself smiling and laughing response to this. Well, if this was how it was gonna be then she'd be happy to bring him along. "Alright bro~"
"Well time to get baking then!" Lincoln suddenly said as he stood up and began to dust his hands.
"Baking?" Star questioned, what was that all about?
"It's only proper manners to bring something to a gathering Star." Lincoln explained to her. Since he was gonna be a guest to this whole thing we wanted to provide something to the whole thing and hopefully make a good impression on both sides of Star's family. "Besides there's this new cookie recipe I want to try, it's gonna be a Lincoln Loud original!"
"Oh yeah guess that makes sense." Star nodded in understanding before leaping off the bed with an excited grin. "But I get to be the taste tester~!"
"Just as long as you don't eat everything like last time." Lincoln told Star with narrowed eyes. The last time he had Star as a baking assistant…he had to do everything twice for obvious reasons.
"It was one time!" Star yelled at him as the two excited the princess' room.
"And one time I don't intend on letting you forget," Lincoln told Star with a teasing smirk.
THE NEXT DAY
"You think this'll be enough?" Lincoln asked as he and Star walked out of the house with each holding about 4 tins full of Lincoln's cookies. Took pretty much all day yesterday to bake all of them, as well as guarding them from his sisters, but it was all worth it. "I don't know how many people there's gonna be."
"Relax dude you did fine, I'm sure both sides of my family will get at least one and they'll love them." Star reassured the white head with a smirk. Like she said she got to be his official taste tester and she could say without a single doubt that they were absolutely delicious! "Well the chariot should be here to pick us up in about ten minutes aaaaaaand…whaaaaaaat?"
Both Star's and Lincoln's attention was grabbed by none other than Lana who was walking away from where the trash cans were…looking a bit beat up. "Lana are you ok?" Lincoln asked his younger sister with a concerned tone. "Looks like you got in a fight!"
"I, uh, sorta did actually." Lana answered as she pointed to where she just came from. "Went into the garbage to get those stale chips Luan threw out. But there was this huge rat inside trying to take them too! Showed him though! Haha!" Lana then held up the bag of chips she was referring to and happily started to munch on them.
"…Gross." Star said as Lana went back into the house. And so, after waiting about ten minutes a large portal opened up in the front yard and out from it came a fancy looking carriage being pulled by…nothing. "Welp, rides here. Let's get this over with."
"Pretty fancy considering we're just going through a portal to get there instantly." Lincoln couldn't help but wonder what the whole point of this was when they could just arrive there in a second by foot considering that, well, they were going by portal. "And what the heck is even pulling it?"
"Well to answer your first question it's really more of a status symbol." Star explained to Lincoln as one of the whole points of royalty was showing how much 'better' and more 'high class' you were then everyone else. And that including fancy showings like this when they really wouldn't needed. "And to answer your second question…invisible goats."
"Baaaaaaa!" Lincoln heard coming from in front of the chariot they were on.
"Ok then…" Lincoln just accepted the answer. Honestly at this point, compared to everything else he's seen, invisible goats were pretty dang normal. "Welp, onward goats it's only like ten feet to Mewni."
"Baaaaaaa!" The goats let out as they started to pull the chariot forward and into the portal. It literally only took a few seconds for them to go through the portal and into Mewni.
"Alright we're here." Star announced as she hopped off the goat.
"I'll never understand rich people." Lincoln shook his head as he got off the chariot pretty much immediately right after he got on. "Oh, uh, no offense."
"Meh, none taken I'm with you on this." Star told Lincoln with a shrug before looking forward and letting out a sigh. "Welp, there's my family."
Lincoln then looked to where Star was looking and saw an incredibly long table that looked to be split in two. Sitting on one half of the table were what looked like a bunch of stereotypical stuck up royal folk wearing clean and perfect outfits with knights and servants by their side, sitting on the other half of the table was what looked like a bunch of barbicans wearing fur clothes and all of them carrying a weapon of some sort and looking like they haven't bathed in weeks at best. "They…look like interesting people." Lincoln constantly kept looking back and forth between the two halves of the table and the difference was like night and day. "Man you really weren't exaggerating with how you described them."
"Told ya," Star let out as just stared at her two families. It was only gonna be a matter of time before it all started. The Johansens pigging out like there's no tomorrow, the Butterfly's have their servants and knights literally do everything for them while making those annoying sipping sounds, and eventually it all breaking down into a huge argument that lasted through out the entire thing. Star could only hope they were lucky enough for that to happen otherwise this thing was gonna be a massive drag for both herself and Lincoln. "Hopefully this'll go by quickly."
"Ah Star." Star then let out a small groan as her mother walked up to her, keeping her usual regal tone, look, and posture even when it was her daughter she was talking too. "Good, I'm glad you came."
"Yep, wouldn't miss it for the world..." Star muttered as she looked away from her mother.
"Hello there queen Moon." Before Moon could comment on her daughter's attitude Lincoln stepped up to the queen of Mewni and properly greeted her. "Nice to see you again. Star invited me to come, hope that's ok."
"Oh, well…I suppose so," Moon was a bit surprised to see Lincoln here. Normally only the two sides of the royal family were allowed to attend the reunion and Moon should follow tradition…but maybe Lincoln could help handle Star's little attitude problem she was having right now. "But what might I ask are in those tins you brought?"
"Oh, these are cookies I baked for the occasion." Lincoln explained as he opened up one of the tins he was carrying and showed off the cookies he baked for the reunion. "Didn't want to just show up empty-handed so I made all these for ya."
"Well thank you." Moon gave Lincoln a small smile as she gestured some of the servants to come by and take the tins off of Lincoln and Star's hands. Well Lincoln was at least polite and thoughtful. "That was very kind of you Lincoln."
"Hooray! More food!" Suddenly River ran up to the two of them and, thankfully after the tins were taken from them, wrapped the two of them up into a hug. "Hahaha! It's good to see you two again!"
"Heheh, good to see you two dad," Star smiled as she allowed her father to hug and toss her and Lincoln around a bit. Well she did at least enjoy seeing her dad so aside from having Lincoln here that was a nice plus to this whole thing.
As River was greeting the two in his own River way, Moon took out one of Lincoln's cookies from a tin before the servants took them away. While she had no doubt that the Johansen's would happily inhale them down no matter how they tasted, she wanted to make sure that her own relatives would enjoy the cookies given their own refined taste. So Moon inspected the cookie for a few seconds and, after seeing that it looked well baked with no burnt spots, held it up to her mouth and took a bite of it.
"…!" Time almost seemed to stop for Moon as she tasted the cookie. So many feelings suddenly rushed through her, and memories flooded back in her head. Happiness, sadness, and most of all pure nostalgia. "…This…This is…" Moon had trouble forming the words as she looked at the cookie in her hand for a few seconds before looking to Lincoln as River let him and Star go. "U-Um…Lincoln?"
"Yes ma'am?" Lincoln asked as he stretched his back out a bit once he was free. River really liked giving incredibly tight hugs didn't he? And that was just with one arm!
"Did you…bake these yourself?" Moon had to know the answer to that question. There's no way these could be what she thought they were…right?
"Sure did!" Lincoln grinned and confirmed this with pride in his voice. "My dad taught me a lot about cooking and baking, and I wanted to try making my own recipe!" Lincoln's eyes then widened as he saw the face Moon was making. Did she not like them? "Is something wrong? Ah dang it did I use to much sugar?"
"N-No. It's not that. It's just..." Moon once again found herself being stumped for words. It was so hard to get herself focused right now, especially with the taste of the cookie lingering on her tongue. 'It's... a coincidence right? But why then…'
'Does it taste like my mother's recipe?'
"Just…what?" Lincoln asked with a small frown. He worked hard on these and he'd hate to see them go to waste if no one liked them.
Star however looked at her mother strangely. Especially to the look on Moon's face. It was an expression Star's never seen from her. "Mom you're uh, making a face there?" Star pointed out as Moon turned to her daughter. "What's with the face?"
"I-It's nothing." Moon cleared her throat and quickly gained back her normal composure before gesturing for the servant to take the cookies to the table. "Thank you for your generosity. Star you two can take your seats."
As she walked away Lincoln let out a sigh and kicked a small pebble that was on the ground. "Darn…" He said in a disappointed tone while looking down. "I guess she didn't like them."
"Aw, don't worry about it." Star sent Lincoln a supportive smile as she patted Lincoln on the back. "My mom doesn't like a lot of things, don't take it personally or anything."
"Yeah I guess so…" Lincoln supposed Star was right. Based on what Star said about her mom she had…high taste to put it lightly. The two then went over to the table and looked over it…and found no free seats anywhere. "Um…where are we supposed to sit exactly?"
"….No…" Star's eyes widened as she slowly started gritting her teeth. No chairs left at this table…then…that means…but she was 14 for crying out loud! "She can't do this…!"
"Excuse me, Princess Star and Mr. Loud." Suddenly a servant walked up to the two teenagers and bowed to them. "Allow me to show you two to where you'll be sitting."
"I swear if it's where I think it is…" Star growled out and-
"Gooooooo!"
"Bababa!"
"Brbrbrbr!"
"…Well this is humiliating." Lincoln deadpanned as the servant, who was recovering from a punch to the gut, had directed Star and Lincoln to the kids table were all the toddlers of both families were gathered up. "Ok the kids table was actually pretty fun…when I was a kid, but now this is just plain embarrassing."
"UGH! Tell me about it!" Star snapped as she slammed her fist down on the table. Even after obtaining the wand, taking on Ludo on his army many times, stopping Toffee, sort of, and getting her wand back after using the whispering spell, and so much more…SHE WAS STILL SENT TO THE DAMN KIDS TABLE AT THE REUNION! "I'm 14 already I shouldn't be sitting here with the babies!"
"Baba!" One of Star's baby cousins let out as they tried to reach for Star.
"Keep your filthy baby hands off me!" Star glared at her baby cousin before scootching away from them, as far as she could anyway given how small the table was. "I hate this!"
Before Lincoln could say anything the toddler next to him ended up spitting up a bunch of mushed up corn. "Gross…" Lincoln cringed as he tossed the piece of corn behind him. "I just lost my appetite."
Just then some corn mash was thrown onto Star's face as one of her little cousins started playing with her food. This caused Star's temper to flare as she took out her wand as her body started to flicker purple and her wand glowed green. "Woah Star," Before Star ended up snapping and causing a scene Lincoln quickly put a hand on her shoulder to try and calm her down. "Deep breaths, deep breaths."
"Ugh….." Star let out as she huffed and puffed heavily, trying to keep herself under control and not have her mom see her strange purple powers. "Why can't I just sit at the adult table already? Not like they're any better."
Star then pointed to all the chaos happening at the adult table and…yeah things were pretty hectic there. All of the Johansen family were eating like total slobs with corn kernels flying everywhere, some ending up in other's drinks, and some members even having multiple corn cobs stuffed in their mouths. And the Butterfly's…weren't even lifting a finger. They were having their servants feed them and lift their goblets up to their lips with them making a very irritating sipping noise causing some of the Johansen's to stuff corn in their ears so they wouldn't have to hear it.
And just as quickly as the lunch started both sides of the family started to argue heatedly with each other, the only exception being Moon who tried to help restore peace. "There's no need for any of this," Moon tried to tell everyone in a calm and civil tone. "I just want e-"
"You Johansens spoiled my appetite like you spoiled the Butterfly family tree." Moon's aunt Etheria yelled at the Johansen family with a glare.
"Oh here now," Moon spoke up a little louder to avoid things escalating further than they already were. The last thing she wanted was for that to happen today. "Let's put a stop to this. Tut-tut."
"Your neck ruffles are choking off the oxygen to your brain!" River yelled at the Butterfly family members with a fierce look.
"Yikes, you weren't kidding." Lincoln knew his family could certainly get into arguments, but this was way bigger than even his own family arguments.
"Yep…" Star looked unamused at first…until a smirk came to her face. "But if we're lucking it can lead to something fun~"
"Like what?" Lincoln couldn't see anything fun coming from this. "A mauling?"
"You'll see~" Star's grin only grew as she watched the argument heat up even more. "Considering how things are going now it's looking pretty likely~"
"River!" Moon yelled harshly at her husband for his little comment about her family.
"You li-oh!" River quickly cut himself off after his wife yelled. He could see she was upset, at both him and their feuding families, so it was time to step up and be the responsible king that he was. "Yes, of course, of course." River cleared his throat as he stood up on the table to get all eyes on him. "Now, now. There's no need for all this back and forth about who's better than who. We're all royalty, as you know. There is a way we can settle this petty dispute like the civilized people we are."
"…Huh…" Considering what Lincoln has learned about River after getting to know him…he certainly wasn't expecting him to make a speech like that. "Well that's-"
"With…FLAGS!" Suddenly River yell out a battle cry as he pulled out a flag with the Johansen symbol on it from…somewhere and rose it up into the air.
After River brought his flag everyone else at the adult table, sans Moon, all cheered as they revealed to have their own flags as well with their respective family's symbol on it. "Oh dear…" Moon face palmed as both families, and the knights and servants, left the table to go get ready for the incoming game.
"Woohoo!" Star cheered as she sat up from her table with a big smile on her face. "It's happening!"
"Uh, what is happening exactly?" Lincoln asked in a confused tone.
"It's flags Lincoln!" Star told Lincoln as she pulled out her own flag with her own symbol on it. "The one good thing about these reunions!"
"Wait did you have that flag the whole time?" Lincoln asked as he pointed to Star's flag which he swore she didn't take with them when they got ready to go. "Where the heck were you keeping that?"
"Hehehe, woman's secret my dear brother," Star told Lincoln with a mischievous grin making the Loud boy roll his eyes. "And besides it's simple, all you gotta do is get your flag up the hill first." Star then pointed at a nearby large hill.
"Oh I get it, it's like King of the Hill." Lincoln smiled as he quickly made the connection. Flags just seems to be Mewni's version of that classic earth game, nothing to complicated. "Man it's been a while since I played King of the Hill it was so much-wait a second that's the hill everyone's going towards isn't it?" Lincoln deadpanned as he turned his head towards a large mountain with tons of obstacles from a snowy area, a volcanic area, a rocky area, and a few more stuff like that. "How is there a snow area and a volcano area next to each other?"
"Kind of the kettle calling the teapot black huh Linc?" Star asked with a smirk as she briefly glanced at each of Lincoln's hands.
"…Ok touché." Lincoln nodded at Star after a brief moment of silence.
"Anyway, the winner of Flags gets to look down on everyone until the next time we play!" Star explained to Lincoln with a giddy smile as she twirled her flag around. "So come on Lincoln! Now we can actually have some fun at this thing!"
But as Star was about to run forward towards where her other relatives were lining up to start the game of Flags. But before she could she ended up bumping into her mother who was quick to take her daughters flag away. "No way." Moon told Star bluntly as she held the flag out of her daughters reach.
"You can have it back after the match," Moon firmly told her daughter, leaving no room for argument. "But you won't be playing Flags today."
"Why not?" Star quickly started to glare at her mother. First she gave her no choice but to come here, then she sits her at the kids table despite the fact she was 14, and now she wouldn't even letting her play flags. "You played Flags when you were my age."
"I did a lot of things you won't be doing." Moon said with a sigh. She knew she was doing what was best for her daughter, but she also knew Star wouldn't understand if she tried to explain it, so she was simply gonna have to put her foot down with her daughter like she usually did when saying no to Star about stuff. "Flags is just too intense for you, you aren't ready for it."
"To intense?" Star sounded offended when her mom said that. She's handled plenty of intense stuff in the last several months alone! "Compared to everything else I dealt with I find that hard to believe mom."
Moon let out an annoyed huff as her daughter continued to argue with her about this. "Well I'm sorry but my decision is final." Moon told her daughter sternly as she began to walk away. "Now please just go and help your little cousins chew their corn."
"….Grrrrr!" As Moon left Star was gritting her teeth hard enough to create sparks as she started to glow purple again, brighter then earlier when they were at the kids table. "Shes…so…!"
"Star just calm down-" Lincoln tried to reach out to Star and cool her temper, but it soon become clear Star wasn't in the mood for that.
"I am not…a little kid anymore!" Star yelled out as the ground started to crack under her feet as her glow intensified. "She is SO INFURIATING!" Star then stomped on the ground causing the area around them to shake a little bit and for the ground to crack up even more.
"Star you need to cool it!" Lincoln yelled at Star. She needed to get herself under control before anyone noticed them.
"I AM COOL!" Star snapped at Lincoln, causing him to flinch and back up.
Meanwhile Moon let out a sigh as she went back to her chair. "And she wonders why she's still at the kids table…" Moon muttered to herself as she heard having a hissy fit, and a loud one at that.
Star, after venting some more which resulted in the ground below her and Lincoln being torn up even more. "She thinks I can't handle flags huh…" Star said as she glared at the spot her mother was sitting at which had a small tent set up around it. "Oh…we're playing flags alright."
Then, without using her wand, Star magiced up a new flag. Only this one was glowing with the same purple energy Star was. "Are you sure that's a good idea?" Lincoln asked with a bit of an unsure tone. While he didn't agree with Moon on now allowing her daughter to play or sticking them at the kids table, considering the state Star was in…maybe it wasn't the best idea she play right now.
"Oh you better believe it is!" Star said with intimidating determination as she pointed the mountain they would be playing Flags on. One look at Star's eyes showed Lincoln she wasn't gonna take no for an answer. "I'm gonna play, plant my flag on the top of the hill, and prove my mom wrong!"
"Well…" Lincoln let out a sigh. No way he was gonna convince Star against this. The best he could do was go along to make sure that "If you're planning on going. Then I have to make sure she doesn't suspect anything." Lincoln's hand then started to emanate with a cold mist.
"Hm? You got a plan~?" Star asked with a grin, though it seemed this one had a bit of wickedness to it.
Yep, been practicing making stuff with my ice." Lincoln explained as he held his hand out and got ready to make something that should hopefully keep the queen from catching onto them. "Yep, been practicing making stuff with my ice. Hopefully it'll be enough to fool her until the games over."
"The game will commence when all participants are at the ready." At the very bottom of the large and dangerous mountain, the Butterfly's and Johansens were all lined up and eager for the game to start. Meanwhile the Moon's top butler Manfred was sitting on a highchair and was overseeing everything. "This year certainly looks to be quite the event."
As Manfred was talking Star and Lincoln managed to sneak into the crowd as things were still getting started. Only one thing seemed to be a major problem…Star was still glowing purple. "Hey, um, Star…" Lincoln whispered to Star, trying to address the issue. "You're…still glowing purple."
"It doesn't matter Lincoln." Star firmly told Lincoln as she glared further. She couldn't care less if she was glowing purple right now. "We can deal with it later, what matters is making it to the top before anyone else."
"Right…right…" Lincoln sighed again, hopefully Star's focus on her goal will keep that state of hers under control. "So wait if both of your families are playing against each other then whose side are we on."
"Our side duh," Star told Lincoln as if it was obvious. She then gave a small competitive grin as she grabbed Lincoln's shoulders. "In fact, we're gonna claim this hill for all the Louds!"
Lincoln winced as Star grabbed his shoulder. She obviously didn't realize her current strength right now because it felt like she was attempting to break his shoulder blade right now. "Y-Yeah sure…" Lincoln's fake enthusiasm seemed to have fooled Star as she let go of him. Lincoln was only growing more unsure about this.
"Here's to another spirited game of Flags," Manfred spoke up again as everyone, sans Lincoln, looked at him impatiently. Why won't he just start the game already?! "Now as per tradition I must explain the one important rule of flags."
"There are no rules!" Many of the adults yelled as they started urging Manfred to get on with it.
"…No eye-poking." Manfred informed everyone, with a few adults letting out disappointed sighs. "But other than that…" Manfred then took out a small golden gun with a fuse on it, the butler quickly lighting it as the adults grinned eagerly. "Ready…set…Flags!" The fuse then finished burning making the gun shoot, signaling the start of the game of Flags.
All the adults cheered and yelled as they wasted no time and charged forward, raising their flags up high as they prepared to do whatever it takes to make it to the top first. No matter what. "Alright Star, leave this to me!" Lincoln grinned as he thought of an idea to get them an early lead. While he was still worried about Star, maybe if they started laughing and having fun she would calm down and go back to normal. Then they would really start having some fun with this game. "Ice Thruster!" With Star hopping on top of Lincoln, the white head aimed his right hand forward and created an ice pathway in front of him and with his left side he generated a thruster flame that pushed the two forward, the ice pathway making it so they had a perfectly smooth and straight ride forward.
"Alright!" Star grinned wildly as she held onto Lincoln tightly. Once again she didn't notice just how tight she was holding onto him as Lincoln winced and nearly lost focus on what he was doing. "Eat our dust losers!"
"Come on Star be a good sport about this." Lincoln lightly scolded Star for her words. The last thing he wanted was for her to act like Lynn during this whole thing. "Let's just try and have fun ok?"
"Less talky more winy!" Star yelled as she pointed forward.
"And both families are at the course." Manfred provided commentary for the event as he watched it all with his opera glasses. "The Johansens take an early lead, but the Butterflies are making up the slack."
When they reached the mountain Star and Lincoln were forced to stop their Ice Thruster since they actually had to start climbing up the mountain. Despite Lincoln's best efforts it seems both families had some real speedsters on them as there were some either already beginning to climb up the mountain or they were already at the mountain. "I won't lose…" Star said with a fierce glare as she started expertly climb up the rough rocks at great speeds. "I won't lose this!"
"H-Hey! Star wait for me!" While Lincoln has certainly gotten more athletic since meeting Star, getting his powers, and fighting monsters and such, he couldn't exactly say he was climbing-up mountains level of athletic. "I'm…almost there!"
"Oh, here, my dear boy." Suddenly one of Star's uncles walked up to the rock Lincoln was on and lowered his hand to Lincoln with a kind smile. "Allow me to assist you."
"Hey, thanks." Lincoln smiled as he took the man's hand.
"Wait don't!" Star looked back and tried to call out to Lincoln. But it was too late as suddenly the man's servant, who was somehow stuffed inside Star's uncle's sleeve, fell out with his hand being the one Lincoln grabbed with both falling back down the mountain.
"Oh! By my troth, you most surely ate it on that one." Star's uncle said with a more taunting tone as he turned around and shook his but at the Loud boy. "Smooch my royal hindquarters. Hahaha, toodles!"
"Let go of me!" Lincoln yelled as he tried to pry his hand away from the servant, Lincoln forcing himself to kick the servants face to free himself. "Geez! What the hell was his deal?"
"That's how Flags is played Lincoln, you never let your guard down." Star came up to Lincoln, her purple glow intensifying after seeing Lincoln get caught in an obvious trap and cause them to fall further behind everyone. "Now come on! We need to go faster now since you slowed us down!"
Lincoln glared at Star a little as she quickly turned around and started to go forward again. "Well sorry for now knowing how this game works!" Lincoln could tell this was negatively affecting Star, he didn't want to admit it to her but…maybe her mother was right about her not being ready to play this game.
As the two advanced up the matter they ended up running into Star's uncle again…who was stuck a bear trap. "Prithee," He tried to get the attention of Star and Lincoln. "May I accept some assistance?"
"Nope!" Lincoln yelled as they ran past him.
"Woe sakes." The Butterfly uncle let out. "I have not the choice but to gnaw off my own fibula."
As Star and Lincoln continued on Star seemed to only grow more intense. Her breathing got heavier, her glare got fiercer, and her purple state showed no signs of going away. "We're going into the rain zone!" Star yelled as she and Lincoln looked forward and saw a part of the mountain that was under a constant heavy thunderstorm.
"This mountain makes no sense!" Lincoln yelled as he and Star went into the rain. But as they did Lincoln's eyes widened as he noticed something. As the rain drops hit Star's body they instantly evaporated on her body and turned into steam. "Woah…" Lincoln didn't realize how much Star's body was heating up due to her magic but it was easy to see now that she was unintentionally creating a small cloud of steam around herself.
As they were going through the rain zone, Lincoln noticed the true violence of this game on display. One of the Johansen's was seen rolling down the hill at other alarming speeds. As Lincoln was about to try and catch him Star grabbed his hand and forced him to jump up and dodge, leaving her relative to continue rolling down the mountain.
"Out of the way old lady!" One of the Johansens yelled as he and a fellow family member were catching up on Star's great aunt Etheria. Etheria took a few seeds out of her pocket and threw them towards the two Johansen's and, once they hit the ground, they instantly sprouted into large thorny vines that wrapped the two Johansen's up before burying them underground with two flowers sprouting in their place.
"Hey! What did she just do?!" Lincoln yelled in complete shock. Ok, he could perfectly understand family squabbles, that was taking it way to far! Even if Mewmans were tougher then humans. "Star we gotta help them!"
"They can help themselves Lincoln stop worrying about it!" She yelled at Lincoln in an irritated tone as she grabbed his wrist tightly and ran up the mountain. They were getting closer and closer to the top and she wasn't about to turn back now! Besides this just means the competition will be thinned out. "Now come on! We can't let her get too far ahead!"
"Ahahahaha!" One of the Johansens yelled as he rose his flag up into the air, attracting a bolt of lightning to him. The lightning coursed through him before he slammed his flag down into the ground and causing the ground in front of him to crumble, break, and start a rockslide.
"Star this is crazy!" Lincoln yelled as his eyes widened at the incoming rockslide. "We need to go back now!"
"…I'm never going back," Star said through her teeth as she rose her hand. Purple electricity started to course through her arm before going up to her hand, coating it with intense energy. "Thunder Breaker!" Star then brought her hand forward and fired a massive laser of purple energy at the incoming rockslide. Lincoln was briefly blinded by the power Star showed off, but when he could see again and looked forward and saw all the rocks completely gone, disintegrated into nothing.
And Star was already making her way back up, leaving her behind. "This is bad…" The longer Star stayed in the purple state the more unhinged she was coming. And with a game that seemed to encourage intense violence like this one…that was a combo forged in hell.
Star, now on her own, made it past the rainy area and into the snowy area. As she ran past one of her relatives she grabbed them by the hair to toss them back down the mountain, further thinning the competition she would have to face. And as she stepped through the snow the white powder around quickly started melting due to the energy Star was radiating with.
"Raaaaah!" Letting out a battle cry, River emerged from the snow right in front of Star and swiped his flag at Star like a fencing sword, but his daughter easily caught it with a single hand. River grunted and tried to pull his flag away before stopping and realizing that it was his daughter in front of him. "Star. Look at my girl, all grown up and playing Flags." River smiled at his daughter, who didn't seem to react at all to him and started at him…rather eerily. "I didn't even recognize you, say what's with that purple color you-ACK!"
Before River even knew it…his daughter struck him. Gripping his flag hard enough to break it and using her other fist to strike her father right in the gut and knock all the air out of him. "Out…of…my…way!" Star growled out as a rather psychotic smile appeared on her face. "Haha…AHAHAHAHA!" Star then grabbed her father's arm and tossed him over his shoulder, sending him back the mountain as she continued to make her way up.
River screamed as he flew through the air and down the mountain, he clenched his eyes shut as he prepared for when he would hit the ground but luckily someone came to his rescue. "I GOT YOU!" Suddenly Lincoln, who had witnessed the entire shocking event, jumped up and caught River before he could fly further down the mountain. Lincoln landed safely on his feet and was quick to set River against a nearby rock and looked over him. "Holy crap! Are you ok?!"
"I'm…I'm fine my boy…" River coughed a bit as he clenched the spot Star struck. He was proud that is daughter was finally participating in flags, but he certainly wasn't expecting that from her. "I've suffered worst, just…caught me off guard is all.."
"…She's not herself…" Lincoln said in a serious tone as he stood up and glared at Star as she made her way further up the mountain. This was worse than he thought. The Star he knew would never do that to her father, she just wouldn't. He had to knock some sense into her. "I need to catch up with her, right now. You stay here and rest."
"But Lincoln…" River began before letting out a few coughs. "This is Flags I can't just-" River was cut off again. But not by his coughs, but by the look on Lincoln's face. It was clear he was both serious as well as desperate, so he conceded. "Yes, very well then. Good luck my boy, I'm sure you'll be able to get through to her."
"Let's hope so…" Lincoln said quietly before running back up the mountain.
"Keeping going…keep going…keep going!" Star repeatedly told herself as she made her way up the mountain more and more. Lincoln was far behind her now…but that's fine. She didn't need him weighing her down. She could make it to the top first on her own just fine! Then her mom would see she is ready for Flags and that she was ready for the adult table! She'll show her if it's the last thing she does.
She soon came across the volcanic area of the mountain which consisted of a lake of lava with many small rock platforms across it that a few of her family members were jumping across. As Star began to jump across the platforms she was suddenly confronted by her uncle Heartrude who was still trapped in a beartrap and was being carried by a new servant. "You've been a stone in my poulaines for too long, my incorrigible little niece!" Heartrude yelled angrily as he glared at her niece. "You're about to abdicate the throne!"
Heartrude then tried to strike Star with his flag, but Star easily blocked it as she gave her uncle a look that was a mix between crazed and completely pissed off. "GRRRRRRR!" Star's growl could be compared to a vicious beast as she looked up at her uncle. Her glow intensified greatly as she shouted as loud as she could. "BACK OFF!"
"GAAAAHHH!" Both Heartrude and his servant yelled as they quickly covered their ears and fell to the ground, luckily not landing in the lava. As Star shouted waves of purple energy were released from her mouth, making her uncle and his servant quickly start hearing bells and even the area around them shaking and the lava greatly rippling. "My…My ears!"
"Tch!" Star clicked her tongue. She immediately began making her way through the lava lake again now that the little distraction was out of the way.
And Lincoln arrived just in time to see it all. "This is nuts! Someone could die!" Lincoln yelled as he looked over the lava lake. Ok, the family members attacking each other aside the mountain wasn't so bad. A rainy area and a snow area were pretty easy to deal with, but a freaking lava lake?! "Gosh this is insane, why would anyone play this damn game?!" Lincoln then aimed his right hand at the lava lake and was gonna put an end to it before anyone could get hurt. "DEEP FREEZE!"
Firing an intense beam of pure ice magic at the lava lake, Lincoln gritted his teeth as he began to cool down the lava into stone. In a matter of about half a minute, the lava lake was gone, and it just looked like a field of stone. As soon as the job was done, Lincoln grabbed his knees and began panting after using up a bunch of his energy to do that. "Alright…thank God…" Lincoln muttered as the Johansen's and Butterfly's who were still on that part of the mountain looked around in confusion over what happened to the lava lake. After resting for a bit, Lincoln ran over to Heartrude and his servant to look them over after their little confrontation with Star. "Hey, you guys ok?"
"Uuuuugh…" Both groaned out in pain as they moved their hands away from their ears…and revealed thin trails of blood leaking out of them.
"Oh God…" Lincoln muttered at the sight before looking up and seeing where Star was, glaring at the back of her head. "That's it…this stops now!"
"Everyone…GET OUT OF MY WAY!" Star yelled as she ran forward past the former lava lake, growing faster and faster with each step as she encountered many of her relatives already there and desperately fighting each other to make it to the top. As Star shouted, similar with her uncle, she released waves of purple energy that stunned everyone and made them cover their ears. While it wasn't as bad as with Heartrude and his servant, who were right in front of Star, it did leave them completely vulnerable. Star rose up her hand and started forming an orb of purple energy in her hands. "Chaos Destruction Sphere!"
Star then threw the sphere on the ground right in front of her. What resulted was a massive purple explosion completely engulfing the area. Star's relatives screamed as they were sent flying from the blast. When the smoke from the explosion faded Star was revealed to be completely undamaged, with only smoke emanating off her body. "Hahahahaha!" Star let out a rather psychotic laugh as she walked forward, the tip of the mountain in her sight. "No one in my way now!"
"That's quite enough young lady!" Suddenly appearing in a bright flash of light…was none other than her mother, Queen Moon. But her appearance was drastically different, her skin was now blue and her hair was a darker shade. She had six arms and on her back were a pair of large blue butterfly wings with an elegant pattern on them. On her head was a pair of long antenna that were tipped with diamonds and her eyelashes grew longer too.
This was Moon's butterfly form, a state where a Butterfly's magic was truly at it's peak…at least that's what Moon thought. But as she examined her daughter she could feel the pure raw magic energy radiating off her…and how that power was clearly affecting her daughter. "Star…" Moon called to her daughter with widened eyes. The magic energy Star was radiating was almost making it hard to breath…and whatever was going on with her daughter was clearly dangerous. It was magic she's never even seen or heard of before. "What's going on? What happened to you?!"
"What's happened is that I proved you wrong!" Star yelled with a wicked grin as she walked up to the very tip of the mountain, rose her flag up high, and with a single powerful thrust stabbed it into the ground. Claiming victory over the mountain and the game of Flags. "Hahahahahaha! See mom I told you I could do it! This was nothing! I'm queen of the hill! Ahahaha! Hear that everyone! It's all mine!"
"Star! That's enough!" Star and Moon looked back and finally arriving at the top of the mountain was Lincoln. The Loud boy was breathing heavily as he glared at Star, it was clear every second she was in the purple state was getting worse. He needed to bring her back to her senses before it was too late. "Look at you! You've gone nuts! Do you even realizing whats going on right now!? You hurt your own family!"
"Well that's just flags for ya! Hahaha!" Star let out the laugh of a madwoman as she stared down at Lincoln. "Don't hate the player hate the game!"
"Star…" Lincoln muttered as he looked the princess over…it was like he couldn't even recognize her anymore.
"Now that's quite enough young lady!" Moon yelled as she glared down at her daughter. She had no idea what was happening, but you can bet she was gonna find out later. But first she needed to get her daughter to calm down. "Sleepy time mist!" Moon then clapped each set of hands together and started rubbing them before sending a blue mist at Star. She used this spell when her husband just refused to sleep, this could knock just about anyone out.
SLICE!
SLICE!
But Star didn't get the chance to breath it in as suddenly a magic purple scythe appeared in her hand. "Scythe of Sorrow!" Star yelled as she twirled her scythe around before meeting Moon's eyes…and charging right at her. "Here I come!"
Moon gasped as Star sped at her, practically becoming a purple blue, but the queen was able to react quick enough as swords made of blue magical energy formed in her upper hands and successfully blocked the incoming attack. "Star! What's gotten into you?!" Moon gritted her teeth as she struggled a bit to hold her daughter off. She had a lot of brute strength to her, but that seemed to be it. "That's it young lady! We are going to have a long talk about this later!"
Moon then tried to use her other four arms to restrain Star but suddenly all her wrist were caught as Star suddenly grew an extra four arms, now matching Moon's six. "What?!" Moon yelled in complete shock. This…This should be impossible! She was already stunned that Glossaryck was teaching Star how to dip down at only 14, but now it seemed she was unlocking the butterfly form as well! But before Moon could question further purple electricity sending surged through Star's hand and shocked her. "AAAAAAHHH!"
"How's it feel old lady?!" Star yelled with a giant psychotic smile on her face as smoke came from Moon's body. "Now let's see how you like this!"
"FIRE ARROW!"
"GAH!" Star suddenly let out as she released her hold on her mother as she was hit on the back with an arrow of fire. "L-Lincoln…" Star muttered as she looked back and saw Lincoln pointing his left index and middle finger out here while breathing heavily.
"Enough Star!" Star grunted as suddenly all her arms were wrapped up in whips, restraining her. Her mom was panting heavily, but it was gonna take more than that to bring her down. "You've done quite enough young lady!"
"Grrr! Grrr! Grrr!" Star repeatedly growled as she struggled to try and free herself. "LET ME GO!" Waves of purple energy were once again released from Star's mouth as she yelled and though Moon grunted loudly in discomfort, she was able to take it.
Purple energy then flared from Star in great amounts. The top of the mountain beginning to crumble around her and Moon struggling to hold her daughter and it seemed that she was about to break out…until…
"STAR!" Suddenly Lincoln come up from behind Star and hugged her tightly. Though her magic was intense, she was able to hold on to her tightly. "YOU NEED TO STOP RIGHT NOW!"
"NO!" Star yelled as she struggled even more. "I SAID LET ME GO!"
"No!" Lincoln yelled back as he continued to hold onto the princess. "I'm not letting you go!"
"GRRRR!" Star gritted her teeth as hard as she could, but she still couldn't get out of Lincoln's hug or her moms whips.
"Star please! Just calm down!" Lincoln desperately pleaded to Star. "You can stop now! Please!"
"Grrrrr!" Star growled again, but it was less intense. Even her magic started to simmer down.
"Star. You can stop. It's over." Lincoln spoke to Star in a gentler tone. Holding her more softly and made it feel like an actual hug. "You don't have to do this anymore. Please." Star seemed to calm down further and she started breathing heavily, as if she was out of breath. "You've won. You can stop. Just…please stop."
Star's breathing then calmed down as Lincoln started to softly stroke her hair, as if he was reassuring her. "...L...Lincoln?..." Star whispered as she looked back. She was finally hearing his voice.
"Shhhhhh...it's okay..." Lincoln told her softly as he continued to stroke her hair. "Everything is ok. I'm here. I'll always be here."
"Wha…what happened…" Star asked as she started to look around, her vision getting blurry. "I-I can't…"
"It's ok." Lincoln told her with a smile. He was finally getting through to Star. "It's ok now. I got you."
And finally, Star stopped glowing and she went back to normal. Her shirt was torn up, but it was an easy fix and she simply slumped down in his arms, physically and mentally exhausted. "...I'm...so tired..." Star said in between breaths.
"Sleep Star. It's okay." Lincoln told Star as Moon's whips disappeared, and he was able to carry her. "We'll talk when you wake up."
"O….Ok….." And with that, Star fell asleep in Lincoln's arms. "Zzzzzzz…"
"Oh Star…" Lincoln sighed out as he looked over the sleeping girl in her arms. He can only imagine what it was like for her to go through that.
"Lincoln…" Lincoln flinched as he looked forward. He knew this would be coming, but he wasn't ready for it. Moon flew down and narrowed his eyes at the boy as well as her sleeping daughter. "What was…that?"
"…..It's a long story." Was all Lincoln could give for now.
Heheh, pretty intense huh?
Me and Petrus figured this would be the perfect chapter to show the Purple State on full display and show almost everything it can do and how unstable it truly is.
Plus now Moon and River now know about it so that's really big.
Although this always was an episode of the series I did enjoy despite it not exactly being plot heavy so it was fun to work on and make my own twist for it.
So make sure you favorite, follow, leave a review and stay tuned for a chapter me and Petrus have been looking forward to for a LOOOOONG time...
