As the trio continued their journey, Callum found himself overhearing the same he'd started hearing Rayla repeating to herself, recently.
Rayla led in the front with Callum following closely behind, and Ezran, Zym, and Bait followed behind Callum admiring their new, unfamiliar surroundings.
Callum couldn't bring himself to admire anything around him, except the view walking closely in front of him. He couldn't help, but notice everything about her.
He noticed the way, Rayla's outfit conformed to her figure, perfectly. He noticed that she wore two more shirts over her first, and wasn't sure why exactly. He would surely get to the bottom of it, at some point. Callum observed the way her hair moved with every step she took, the fact that her hair had been lengthening from when they first started, and Rayla didn't find it a priority to cut it.
He thought about how nice it would be to run his fingers through it, but he relatively pushed those thoughts away. He observed the small bits of skin Rayla's outfit revealed. He checked out her figure, even if it wasn't accentuated much, his green roamed her from her figure, to her behind, to her legs, the way her mid-thigh length boots conformed to them perfectly, accentuating their size and shape, to the very way she walked.
He'd been so caught up with observing the "view" that he failed to notice Ezran catch up to his pace and observe where exactly he was looking.
Ezran was rather fond of the idea of Callum and Rayla having romantic interests for one another, a lot more than the idea of Callum and Claudia. He knew, Callum was previously interested in Claudia, but wasn't the fondest of them. He didn't necessarily approve of them anyway, sure he'd tease Callum about his crush, but that didn't mean he liked the idea. Besides, he wanted someone who would at least acknowledge his presence. Even if Claudia was romantically interested in Callum, she didn't seem to acknowledge his importance, in Callum's life. Rayla cared for them both. Not for just Callum or just he himself. She acknowledged him as a person, which he appreciated. But either way, the thought of Rayla and Callum together excited him, he figured this would be interesting along with incredibly fun.
He smirked, and silently giggled to himself before declaring, "Callum, you know you're not subtle, like at all. She's gonna catch on sooner or later."
That quickly snapped Callum out of his thoughts he looked at his little brother to find him staring at him with a mischievous smirk, "Huh? I wasn't -- I wasn't -- No, of course not."
Ezran was fighting himself to not burst out laughing, "Callum, I'm not three, anymore. I think, I can tell when you are checking,..."
"SSSHHHhhhhhhh!!!!!! I was not!" Callum interrupted clasping his hands on Ezran's mouth.
Ezran grabbed his hands to pry them off from his mouth. "Callum, It's not like she can hear, see?" He forwarded his arms in front of himself gesturing to the elf leading them, but seemingly zoned out by her thoughts.
"It - It - it's not like just because she isn't looking at us she can't hear," Callum retorted in disbelief.
"Fine," Ezran rolled his eyes, "But seriously stop denying it, and you won't get very far if you're not subtle which clearly you're Not!"
The five carried on in their travels in silence aside form the occasional noises from Zym, until they stopped for a food break. While Ezran tried struggled to feed Zym and Bait who kept running around, Callum and Rayla ate in silence with the occasional stolen glances at one another. But they both did watch Ezran with amused smiles.
Rayla had successfully stolen glances at Callum and vice versa, but as she attempted to glance again, this time Callum caught her while trying to do the same. Instantly, Rayla turned away pretending she didn't know, she was blushing an insanely bright red.
Callum once again placed his hand on her shoulder. Man! He seemed to really like touching her. But this time she squirmed out of his gentle grip. "Rayla, you've been awfully quiet, and quite distant, What's going on?"
There it was, Callum's voice again, his tone, soft and sweet. His presence and general being like home, only no home she'd ever known.
Sha wanted to tell him so badly, but there was that part of her that "knew" that it would make things worse. "I've just been thinking about a lot of things, like what'll happen when Zym is delivered to the Dragon Queen, and the war ends. What, then, You know?"
Callum's eyes shifted to the ground. He didn't think about that, she was right. She was likely to go home, and them the same. His eyes lifted again to meet hers, "Yeah, but don't worry. We'll figure something out."
There he was, lifting her spirits again, making her feel comfortable again. She this time pushed her worries, aside. She chuckled, "Yeah, so when do you think, Ez will be finished feedin' Zym and Bait?"
Callum smiled wide, "Honestly, probably when we stop them. While we wait, I remember you said that you didn't know your parents, very well. Is there, maybe, anything you remember about them? You know, positive things."
Rayla sighed but relatively smiled, "Well, they left when I was four. There are few things, I remember about them. Like, my dad would take me to small meadows to have picnics and my mother would tell me stories of when Xadia was one united country. When humans and elves were peaceful with one another. They, actually, didn't want me to fall into,.. well, their line of work. They would have been furious to find I took on trainin' to be an assassin. Still, they were sure that peace could never befall Xadia and the human kingdoms like it did once. Looks like I'm provin' them wrong."
"Wow! if it hadn't been for what they'd done I would've loved to meet them. I'm sure, Ez would, too." Callum exclaimed happily.
For a few moments, they gazed into one another's eyes without interruption, that was, until Ezran noticed and decided to break the moment, "Um,.. Hey, Guys."
He swiftly caught their attention by speaking. They looked to him, then to each other before immediately turning away.
Rayla sat up straight, and cleared her throat, to fill the awkward silence, "Um, yeah, Are you finally done playin' with Bait and Zym?"
"Uh, yeah. I've been done for over five minutes what exactly have, you two been doing?" Ezran lifted an eyebrow at Rayla's comment.
Callum quickly responded, "We were just,.. talking,...about.. stuff."
Ezran shot Callum a blank look, and Rayla broke the small silence, "Well, since you're done, we should probably get goin'. It won't be day forever." She stood and helped Callum stand, as well.
