Finally, after a while longer Callum's eyes opened.
He looked around studying his surroundings, trying to figure out how he got in this position. He was lying on the floor below deck. The last thing he remembered was -- Oh, right he overheard Rayla's conversation with his brother.
Rayla liked Soren.
He looked to his side and found Rayla beside him, looking outside the window at the lake. She seemed troubled, and quite concerned.
He figured out exactly how he got there, in this situation. He must've fainted after hearing their conversation.
Still, his eyes remained on Rayla studying her features carefully with a smile. He'd never seen anyone so beautiful, even when concerned.
Rayla happened to look back to check on him, and quickly noticed his consciousness. Though he was lying, she gasped in surprise and relief, immediately she rushed on him wrapping her arms around his neck embracing him in a tight hug.
"Callum, you're okay!!"
Callum grinned wider, and he returned the tight embrace wrapping his arms around her waist. Being this close to her, was comfortable. It also meant he could smell her scent. She smelled like lavender and a hint of pine. It was intoxicating.
Rayla pulled back, red as a tomato, realizing she was on top of him, she got off him. He sat up, and just then the blanket that had been placed over him, fell to his lap revealing what Rayla was trying her hardest to avoid looking at.
Suddenly, Callum felt cool air blow against his chest. He looked down and noticed he was, in fact, shirtless.
His cheeks reached a bright red, "Um, Rayla, Where's -- Where's my shirt? Why-- Why isn't it on?"
Rayla responded not meeting his eyes, "Well, I,... um,.. took it off."
Callum pulled the blanket to cover his bare chest, "Why?"
Rayla rolled her eyes as she scoffed, "Have you not heard of loosening someone's clothes when they faint? It's not like, I did it for pleasure."
"Oh."
A long silence followed that statement. Rayla began checking him out especially his upper half, for the 50th time, at least so it felt.
Not paying any attention to where Rayla's eyes were focused, Callum broke the silence, "Um, Rayla, I think, I'm okay, now. Can I, by any chance, get my shirt back? Oooorrr,..."
"Oh! Yeah, Here you go," Rayla squirmed out of her thoughts, and passed him his folded shirt. "I'll just give you some,.. um, privacy, and turn around." She stood and turned around to face the wall as she promised, subconsciously taking a few peeks at him.
"Okay, It's - it's on," Callum informed as he checked her out a split second before she turned back around to face him. She did give him a view.
He attempted to start conversation on the very thing that was bothering him.
"So,.. I,.. You like Soren."
Rayla's eyes widened, "Oh, You heard the conversation?"
"No, I just happened to be walking by and I heard you talking about it. I wasn't eavesdropping or anything, I just overheard it."
To assure Callum that what she'd said was "legit", Rayla added faking a smile, "Yeah, He has,.. um, uh... nice green eyes."
Callum raised an eyebrow, "Green? Soren doesn't have green eyes."
"Oh, uh,.. Brown?"
Callum shook his head.
"Blue! He has nice blue eyes."
"Uh-huh, anyway, uh... well, I was going to tell Ezran that it was time to have Lunch, but knowing him he's already gotten into it. I'm gonna go check on him," Callum replied slightly unsure about the truth of Soren having "nice blue eyes".
"Okay."
"Are you coming? I'm sure, you could use some real food. I don't know much about elves, but I know, no one can survive without actual food. Moonberry doesn't really count as food," Callum smirked playfully.
Pretending she wasn't blushing she returned the look which caused him to blush, as well. She relatively agreed. "I suppose, go ahead, I'll be up in a peck." Again Rayal instantly corrected herself, "A Sec! A sec! You know, in a second."
"Oookay, I'll see you in a sec, then."
Callum went above deck as Rayla put her cloak and her gloves back on. She placed the hood over her head, and followed Callum.
She sat near the captain's quarters, where he was steering. Callum was drawing further away, while Ezran played Zym, and Bait slept more.
Curious as to Rayla's interests, Patrick started conversation as he sailed, "So What's your friend, Callum, like?"
Rayla raised an eyebrow, "How do you mean? You may gain better answers from Ezran. He is his brother, he's known him longer. Why ask me?"
"Everyone has their own opinions, Their own way of viewing things. I already asked Ezran, and I gained an honest opinion. I meant, How would you describe the young fellow? People aren't always what they seem. So I ask the people around them, instead of them, themselves. What's he like?" Patrick smiled as he informed.
While comfortable, amazing, and handsome easily applied to Rayla's mind and thoughts, she refused to say it out loud.
"Callum's not a hypocrite. He's honest, truthful, and incredibly selfless even to a fault. He's kind and brave. He's always willin' to put others needs before his own. I try to tell him, he shouldn't take himself for granted. He cares for others, way above himself. But May I ask, Why, exactly do you want to know this?"
Patrick replied without hesitation, "Well, when I return home my wife, Helen, enjoys it when I describe the people I sail across this lake in vivid detail. That way I can help her invision them, what they look like and their personalities. She would be delighted to hear and invision what you're like. Please, describe your friend, further and maybe, dabble into appearance. I may be able to see, but I am not very descriptive, so I commonly ask passengers to describe one another."
"Ohkay, Well, Callum's modeste," She chuckled to herself before continuing, "He has light lime green eyes, thick brown hair, and likes to wear blue, which complements his eyes, quite well," Rayla said in small sighs, and stopped to clear her throat.
"How long have you known him? Earlier you claimed Ezran's known him longer."
"Um, Yeah. But we've been travelin' together for about 2 and 1/2 Months. We met shortly before startin' our journey."
"Hm, Pardon me, I jumped to the conclusion that, you'd known one another for years."
Rayla wished, but unfortunately not, "Oh no, we haven't, not yet. If there is a yet," She mumble the last sentence. "How exactly gave you the assumption we've known each other that long?"
"You seemed to know him, quite well. Both of them. Of course mainly the older one. I could barely read him," Patrick explained honestly.
"It's not hard to read Callum and know the kind of person he is. I knew, the moment I looked into his eyes. It's just somethin' you know."
Patrick shrugged, "So what is this journey all about, anyway?"
"Okay, This is soundin' more like bein' nosy than curiosity."
Patrick shrugged again, "Fair is Fair, I suppose."
The rest of the time was spent in mostly silence.
In no time, they reached shore.
The trio began gathering their few belongings and necessities with extra supplies Patrick lended to them. Patrick soon left to get back to the wheel, so that the wind wouldn't steer them away from shore.
Bait taught Zym to sneak past everyone up to above deck to find more food. Ezran left to find them, he knew they could get into loads of trouble. He unintentionally left Rayla and Callum alone gathering the rest of the supplies.
It was picking at Callum, all he could think about was Rayla's "interest" in Soren whom he was nothing like. It nicked and picked at his brain, like a leech to flesh. He couldn't shake it.
He was nothing like Soren.
Soren was strong, confident, tall, somewhat smart, but incredibly skilled, and he was 10x better looking than Callum could ever be.
Soren was everything, Callum was not.
And Why wouldn't Rayla be fond of Soren?
He could even offer more for Rayla than Callum could.
Soren was "Captain of the 'Crown Guard'". Callum was just a boy whose now deceased mother had married the King.
There was a long silence as they gather supplies, and a gazillion thoughts raced through Callum's head. He couldn't help but wonder what things would be like when peace was restored to their lands. What would happen between them? And more importantly What would happen between she and Soren.
Even though it hurt him more than a thousand stab wounds to the heart, he finally brought himself to speak to her about it, "So,... Rayla, about your crush on Soren."
Rayla's face went bright red, Callum just reminded her of that stupid little fib that he just had to have heard. Callum assumed her blushing was just her reaction to Soren's name or something gag-worthy like that. But she really liked Soren and that's what mattered the most, not how he felt about it. He shouldn't have a say in who she should have interest in. She was free to like whoever she wanted to. And he wanted to make sure she was happy, even if that meant seeing her with someone else. Still, he continued, "If-- When you see each other again, are you going to tell him or..." It pained him to ask.
Rayla instantly turned to look at him and replied, "No! No, no, Of course not. Why would I?"
Quickly she had to remind herself of the fib that covered the truth, way too well. She had to find a reason why not.
"Um,.. I... well, None of us left on good terms. He and his sister, Claudia, betrayed you -- Us! And tricked you and Ezran, without regret," She said in explanation. "Besides, he probably doesn't like me back. I'm an Elf, remember? There isn't the slightest chance any human would be interested in me -- because of what I am," She hesitated, stopped, and resumed. Her explanation wasn't all false. She just passed her self consciousness off as an excuse for her species.
Callum rubbed the back of his neck, "Um,.. well, he-he might. I mean, when they were with us he seemed to like have you," He thought to himself all the times he'd caught Soren looking at Rayla with interest along with when he checked her out. It aggrivated him to see or even think about it to no end. But then again she was beautiful, how could someone not take interest in her.
"Wait, Really?" Rayla looked up once again in disbelief. Not at all happy to hear it, let alone believing someone actually liked her.
The last thing he wanted to say was that he'd seen Soren look at her with interest, but it would make her happy to know, "Yeah, I'd seen the way he looked at you. Not that I was paying lots of attention to it."
He sighed.
Rayla's attention reverted to Callum who she'd noticed didn't sound happy at all. She worried why.
"Callum, what's wrong?"
Rayla must've closed her eyes for less than a second, but the moment she opened her eyes, their surroundings became murky, and he relied not sounding bothered anymore, "Everything is perfect, because,... I love you, Rayla."
Instantly after she heard those words, she let out an almost high pitched scream. Their surroundings became clear again, and Callum gasped at Rayla's sudden uncharacteristic action.
Ezran and Patrick raced down below deck to find a panicked Rayla.
"What's wrong?!!" Callum, Ezran, and Patrick called out simultaneously.
Reality hit again, and Rayla was unsure how to respond, "Uuuuhhhh,... I... thought, I saw somethin'," She excused realizing what had just happened was just some sort of daydream.
The three looked at her with unsure, narrowed eyes.
Callum broke the weird silence, "What exactly did you see?"
Instantly Rayla responded, "It doesn't matter. We're all packed, let's just make out of here!"
She realized her mistake once more, "I mean, get out of here. Let's make out -- Get out of here. Yeah."
Patrick's eyebrows raised as he imagined what she'd said. He saw the way she looked at Callum. He knew, where her interests lied.
Ezran shuddered at the imagery, "Make out?"
Callum twiched thinking about who she liked. Before, he had no reason to think that she mean that with anyone, but now that he knew who she liked.
"You know, what I meant. It was a stupid, little wordin' kiss-take, MISTAKE!!" Rayla shouted as she stomping above deck with some of their supplies. Her frustration was finding its way out. This whole predicament was driving her crazy.
Letting her cool off slightly they waited to followed and the three of them de-boarded the ship and said their farewells.
Patrick sailed home, and they continued on.
