Will had left Emmy with the others while he had gone to see his brother, the conversation was playing over and over in his head.
Before Will could put his sister down Connor had come out. Will was now way more anxious than before.
"How's my brother?"
"Jay…" He stopped taking a breath. "Jay has a long road ahead of him, one of the bullets nicked a small part in his midsection. We managed to remove it and control the breathing. He lost a lot of blood we had to transfuse during surgery"
"But he'll be alright?"
Standing outside his brother's room he looked inside and saw his brother laying in the bed fast asleep. Quietly going in, Will had taken a seat by his brother and grabbing his hand, a tear had fallen from his eye.
"I need you to wake up Jay. Please. I need my little brother. Come back to me kid. I need you. Emmy needs you. You're so much more of a fighter than I ever was. I've already lost mom. Dad is dead, the others took him out while getting Em back. We need you Jay, you're the glue that holds this family together. We can't lose you"
The redhead wanted to desperately hear his brother's voice but instead he heard the machines beep. Out in the waiting room, Emmy was asleep as she laid across two chairs. Antonio had covered her with a jacket. None of the Intelligence team had left the hospital. Jay was one of their own and his family was their family. They didn't care how long it would take, they wouldn't leave him.
After what seemed like forever, Emmy had finally awoken and she rubbed her eyes and smoothed her frizzy brown hair back. Antonio had sat beside her and handed her a bag of food and something to drink.
"Thank you," Emmy said softly.
"You're welcome. Your brother's going to be ok. He'll pull through. That kid is tough and one of the strongest people I know" Antonio told her.
"It was my fault"
"No sweetheart it wasn't"
"Yes it was. If.. If I had just said something. Anything. Then Jay wouldn't have gotten taken, he wouldn't have gotten beaten or shot"
Emmy was rambling and hadn't realized it, her breathing was picking up and she had been crying. The senior detective knew the young girl was going into a panic attack. He had taken her hand and guided her somewhere calm and quiet. He brought her to a spare office and closed the blinds, Emmy was crying and gasping for air.
"I….I can't…..breathe… I…I can't….breathe" She sobbed.
"Emmy, try and calm down. Relax. Slow deep breaths" He softened his voice, not trying to upset her further. "Slow breaths. You're safe, you're alright"
"I…I'm safe…I….I'm alright"
"That's right. Emmy, I'm gonna ask you a couple questions. It should help. What is it you feel?"
"Wha…What?"
"Tell me what you feel"
"I…um… your hand. It's soft"
"Good. That's good. What do you smell?"
"Lavender. Kinda like an air freshener"
"That's it. You're doing good. What do you hear?"
"Us. We're talking. Other than that it's quiet"
"Last one. What do you see?"
"A table. The chairs. Windows"
"That's good. You did good. Keep taking slow deep breaths"
Emmy had done as she was instructed and did the breathing exercise before she knew, she was finally calm. Antonio had gotten her some water and she had slowly sipped it.
"Thank you. How did you know how to do that?"
"My sister is a paramedic and I've often helped Jay come out of his when he had them"
Emmy still felt too ashamed to look at him as she had kept her head down and he had gently taken two fingers and lifted her chin up so his dark chocolate brown eyes had met her ocean blue eyes. Her eyes were red from crying, he used his hand to wipe the moisture from her cheeks.
"Emmy, what happened to Jay wasn't your fault. You couldn't have known any of that was going to happen"
"I should have told them the truth. I.. I was scared. I didn't think they'd believe me. Dad said they wouldn't"
"It's understandable to be scared but if we don't know we can't help"
The door to the small office opened, Hank and Will had walked in. Emmy glanced between them and then her eyes had locked onto her brother.
"I have a lot of explaining to do. I know. Just know, I'm really sorry for everything" She started not taking her eyes off her brother.
"We'll discuss that later. But for now, Jay's awake"
Without another word Emmy bolted from the room and went to Jay's room, she ran down the halls looking in every one till she had found her brother. Jay was awake, wincing in pain. The eleven-year-old ran in the room and jumped on the bed jostling it and her brother and hugged him with all her might.
She had accidentally hit against where he was shot and he let out a cry of pain. Emmy moved back some. "I'm sorry"
"It's ok. You have to be careful I'm sore" Jay told her.
"Are you going to be ok?"
"I survived worse than this. I'll be just fine"
"I'm sorry Jay"
"This wasn't on you"
"It might as well have" She had put her head down.
"Em. Emmy, sweetheart look at me"
Slowly she lifted her head and glanced at him, she felt him taking her hand and rubbing his thumb across her knuckles.
"You're a kid, you were scared. I understand. He threatened you. That doesn't make any of this your fault. I'm not mad at you"
"I'm sorry"
"Come here kiddo"
She carefully climbed to her brother and wrapped herself around him, Jay held his young sister close brushing and smoothing her long hair back. Looking out the window Jay had seen their oldest brother and watched on. They knew Emmy did have a lot to say but that could wait. For now they could focus on being a family.
