Chapter 4
Arizona Robbins had not left her mind since the moment she had met her. Another port, another tour, another mission, another bunch of new recruits to train, that is what life has always been like, or at least what it was starting to feel like, yet the blonde constantly seemed to find her way in there.
Before all of this, when everything was okay in the brunette's world, she had made plans with her fiancé that one last tour and then the two of them would retire, she would use up all of her life's savings and put them towards a restaurant while Erica opened a clinic and did consults.
One last tour and that was it. They would be home.
Sadly, her fiancé didn't make it back. Erica was in the army and she was a surgeon rather than a soldier but one of the bombs were aimed straight for the clinic and with that, it took her life away and along with it, her future. Who does that? Why would someone bomb the clinic? To make sure that the job was done? That they weren't happy with injuring the other side they wanted to kill them, to make sure that the job was done.
She remembered the day like it was yesterday, she had gotten a letter in the mail. Callie knew that only her fiancé had her postal address, so it had to be hers, but turns out. It wasn't Erica who had written the letter for her. She remembered opening the letter as the spouse of a significant other in the army. Callie was officially on duty so she couldn't even cry, she had to put on a brave face as she read the letter and then went back to work.
After her shift was done she finished dinner with her co-workers, laughed with them, sang some songs before retiring to the bed where she hugged her pillow and cried herself to sleep.
Suddenly, all her plans about retiring went out the window. Her life savings were still in the bank as she drew up a will to give half the money to her sister Aria's daughter and half of it to the widows and widowers of the defense forces. It was not like they needed money. Both Callie and Aria were heiresses. Their father was a business mogul and each had an account to a giant inheritance to their name, but Callie wanted to contribute to her niece's future anyway she could.
The brunette almost smiled bitterly. They had planned it all, hadn't they? Erica was going to throw a dart on a giant map and wherever it landed, they were going to move there and start their lives together, after getting married of course. What is it that people say? Tell him your plans and he'll destroy them all. However, Callie was still a believer. She had to be, it was the one thing that her Abuela had given to her, her rosary that she still used when she felt like praying, but it was more for meditative purposes than the actual act of praying.
Callie still had her ring, not too sure of what to do with it, she thought about just burying it, but she couldn't part with it. At the age of twenty-four, she felt like a widow. Yeah, they were not officially married but Callie couldn't help what she was feeling. Even though it had been two years since the event, she wasn't sure if she was healed. Or if she would ever heal, she just learnt to deal with her pain better.
She had promised herself not to get attached to anyone after that, she didn't know what she would do if she lost someone.
Suddenly, she was pulled out of her day dream by a knock on her office door.
"Yes?"
"It's Sergeant Robbins, Captain." What did he want from her?
"Come in," she said as she looked up from her work. "What is it?"
"I got a letter from home."
Callie smiled. She remembered the days her ex-fiancé sent her letters, they really seemed to lift her up.
"Sergeant Robbins in the Marines we usually open letters at our bunks," she teased.
"I did, this one seems to be for you," he said as he placed the letter on her desk.
That was strange, she was not expecting a letter from anyone.
"Is that all?"
"Yes Captain."
"You're dismissed," she said as she picked up the letter in her hand.
It was neatly folded and had the words, 'Please give this to the Captain.' written on it.
Well, that could be any captain. Curiosity did kill the cat as Callie wanted to know what was in the letter.
Hey Callie,
I didn't exactly have your postal code so I thought while I wrote Danny a letter that I would write one for you too so here goes.
I had a blast the time you were here. Especially memorial day Sunday. Never have I ever laughed so much with anyone. Thank you so much for that.
Also, if this is Danny reading this, fuck off Danny! This letter is not meant for you, didn't you read that it was for the Captain and not the Sergeant? I guess I'll know if Callie replies or not whether you did hand her the letter or not. Till then I'm holding mom's chocolate chip cookies hostage. Knowing you, you must have already gone through the first stash, so give this letter to her otherwise no cookies.
Alright Callie, where was I? I was kind of missing you so I decided to write you a letter and now you kind of do have to reply back, otherwise you have to deal with a cranky Robbins deprived of sweets and trust me, we are not easy to deal with when we are cranky.
I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to an art retreat, maybe something will happen or I'll find some inspiration to paint or draw or sculpt, I don't know yet. I don't want to leave home because mom and dad already miss Danny and I think they miss you too, but this house is killing me. It's too quiet.
What about you? Do you love the sea? I feel like someone who has to stare at the ocean for six to eight months wouldn't enjoy it as much, but then since you are the Captain you would have stopped doing tours if you didn't like being deployed. What is your day like besides ordering around my brother and making his life miserable? He hasn't complained about you yet so don't be too harsh on him. Actually, you should be harsh on him. Did you know he cheated in monopoly when we were kids, he would deliberately give me two hundred dollars less before we started and then steal money from me. The audacity of it all!
Do you know when you'll be back? I know you just left but you must get like a weekend off or something once in a while? Right? I mean you could pop by and I could show you around? Not that you have too, I know you are too busy but I just miss you a bit, like a tiny bit.
Also, can you give me your actual postal information? I don't trust my brother and I'm pretty sure that he has already read this letter so I'm going to avoid saying personal things about myself that he has no business knowing about.
Daniel Jacob Robbins Junior, next time mom tells me to send you cookies, I'll be sending them to my stomach instead. That is what you get to be the nosy little… um you know what Callie doesn't need to know the things I call you, I feel like she would scold me for it? Or punish me? Isn't that right Callie? ;P
Eagerly waiting for your reply,
Arizona Robbins,
Miss Robbins since you seem to prefer that.
Callie couldn't help the giant smile that took over her face. She could totally picture Arizona having a giant smile on her face as she wrote to her, almost similar to hers.
Callie searched her drawers for a fresh paper and pen before writing to her. She knew that it took two weeks for the letters to get here and about a week or two till she got her letter so she didn't want to waste any time.
Hello Miss Robbins,
You should know by now that my preferred name for you is Sugar lips and the night we spent together certainly confirmed that, but I'll stick to Miss Robbins, if that's more comfortable for you, but only for the sake of the letters.
Your letter made it safe and sound to me, although if it had come with the said chocolate chip cookies I would have liked it better. I guess I can take you over my knee for that later, or do you think such a crime deserves a harsher punishment?
I have attached my postal code with this letter but be warned it takes about two weeks for me to get your letters so make sure if you send something, it's secure and packed accordingly. Trust me, the sight of ruined food is the worst thing that could happen to anyone posted out here.
Also yes, my full name is Calliope and no you are not allowed to call me that. No one knows about it and I would like to keep it that way. It was tough, you know, growing up with that name, but what can I say my dad had a thing for Greek mythology and I had to spend years getting bullied because of it. Well, look at me now! I dare them to say a thing or two to me. I wouldn't take them over my knee, that spot is meant for you and you only ;P
Do I like the sea? Yes and no. I was born and raised in Miami so water was always home to me, my parents had to pry me out of the water because I refused to leave it. Even when my skin got pruny and raisin like, I would insist that I wasn't done and then Papi would have to carry me out while I cried my eyes out. Those were some fun times, huh? I assume you were named after the battleship and not the state? Did anyone else in your family serve apart from your dad and brothers or is your family patriots from the very beginning? Sometimes the sea can get a bit monotonous but ever since I became Captain, I have been locked up in my office and I haven't gotten much time to go on the deck. You know what? Today, I might go walk around for a bit during the day. It's been a while since I did a surprise check, maybe spook some contraband and said chocolate chip cookies from Sargent Robbins? Man, now I really want some cookies.
I don't have a sweet tooth I don't, but it's been a while since I had something indulgent you know? Like the cookies we have here? Nope, I would rather go without than take one bite, all the more reason for you to send me some. Since my infinite supply of sugar is taken from me, my lips aren't covered in Sugar and I don't like that.
About free time? I'm not really sure, I mean I get time off but it takes a day to leave and get there, and then another, and before you know it, half the time goes in traveling or on flights. I'll try to make some free time and now that I have your address, maybe I'll pop by when you least expect it.
Just don't be drunkenly making out or sleep with girls trying to recreate how I made you feel that night. Actually, the making out part? I don't mind. Silver can never compete with Platinum Sugar lips, we don't play in the same league. But please don't get into much trouble. I would like to go one moment without having to shove water down your throat. Chocolate sauce on the other hand? The things I could do to you with it.
I'm happy that you started working on your art, whatever it is that you decide to do, draw, paint, or even grab a few cans of spray paint and do some graffiti on the side of random walls. I believe in you and I know that you will do great. Just don't get caught. I won't be able to come and bail you out. The art retreat should do you good, maybe get a little sun? You are pale enough to pass for a zombie, your body on the other hand… I guess I will let your mind do what it does best and wonder about the things I could do to you!
Maybe I could send you something to cheer up your day just like you did? But be warned we don't have much here apart from some salt water I guess? But that's an awful present.
Miss Robbins, I like that you love your brother, but to give him a harsh time so that you could feel better about yourself… I'm on board! Maybe we could prank Sargent Robbins when he least expects it? What do you have in your mind, Sugar Lips? Also, since I'll be doing most of the work, I expect payment in the form of brownies? And that is in addition to the cookies that were once promised.
Thank you so much for writing to me, it made my day.

A/N: Did anyone notice a little nugget I left in the chapter? Or was I too discreet? Leave a review on what you think it is and I'll confirm it in the next chapter. Actually, there are two little nuggies. One in this chapter and the other one started since chapter one and has continued since.
Thank you so much for reading.
