Chapter 6

The day seemed to go on forever and yet it only felt like a couple of minutes had passed. Arizona loved the warmth she got from the brunette, the playful touches when she saw nobody was watching them. She liked how the Captain would lean in and whisper something absolutely dirty in her ear and how she would try hard to retaliate but almost fail immediately and try to stop the blush from spreading too much on her face. She knew that that was what Callie wanted, which was what made her want to take her to her room and have her way with her. It was something that was long overdue anyway.

It wasn't that Callie was the only who did the torturing, she tried to level the game but there was just no beating the Captain, she was a sailor after all she had probably played this trick on a millions of people, millions of women… or men? Or both? She wasn't sure what Callie identified as. They never came to that part of the conversation, it was always pretty flirty between them and she really liked that.

Like right now, the boys had gotten a nice fire going on the beach as the sunset made the Miami air feel a bit chillier. Arizona had two marshmallows which she had stuck on a stick as she roasted them in the fire. Her back was resting against the brunette's front ever so discreetly that it made it look that they were just friends sitting a bit too close but with the towel that Callie had on her shoulders the arm that was thrown across her waist was hidden to all. The tan hand that was lazily draped on her waist would suddenly dip to her highs or made its way to her belly as she drew patterns with her fingers, igniting her skin. All in all it felt like heaven and hell at the same time. But she enjoyed her company nonetheless.

The blonde tried to remove the marshmallow on the stick with her bare fingers but immediately recoiled as the hot marshmallow almost burnt her skin as she shook her hand in pain.

"Careful Miss Robbins," she heard Callie whispering into her ear as the arm around her waist tightened. "Let me see." she requested.

The brunette took her fingers into her own hand before blowing on them. They were slightly red but it didn't look like any damage had been done. "Here," she said as she took her fingers into her mouth, immediately cooling them, but lighting her whole body on fire.

It was the sexiest thing watching her even though she had no intention of turning her on. Well maybe a little. Soon enough the brunette took out her fingers and inspected them.

"Does that feel better?" Callie asked.

The blonde was speechless, how do you respond to that after witnessing one of the sexiest things that has ever happened to you? So she resorted to nodding. She watched Callie grabbing some chocolate and a gram cracker bar, sandwiching them around the hot marshmallow before offering it to her, to taste it.

She leaned forward and took a bite as her face morphed into a giant smile.

"It's so good you should try it," she replied as she took the smore from her hand and offered it to Callie.

She watched the brunette reaching forward and rubbing the melted chocolate from the corner of her lips before bringing her finger to her own lips. "There's somewhere else I'd rather put chocolate on." The brunette whispered before liking the chocolate that had dripped on her own fingertips.

Arizona turned to the rest of the group. "Anyone wants more drinks?" she asked as she got to her feet, but it was more to get Callie alone than actually getting people drinks.

"Seriously Arizona, that's like the tenth round now!" April said as she looked up at her.

"Relax, we are on break!" she replied, before looking at Callie and offering her hand to her so she could help her carry them out.

"Actually Captain, I got this round" Danny said as he got up from his seat and walked towards Arizona.

Both the women couldn't help themselves as their faces fell when the Sargent offered to help out his sister. Nonetheless, Callie nodded as she watched the Robbins siblings leave.

"What are you doing Arizona?" Danny asked.

"What?"

"Do you think I don't see you flirting with the Captain?"

"Stay out of it Danny."

He grabbed Arizona by her elbow causing her to stop. "No, you stay out of her business"

"With all due respect, what I do is none of your business."

"None of my business? You don't get it do you?"

The blonde was confused. "You know nothing about her! Hell, I don't know anything about her!"

"So?" She asked.

"You are unreliable, you sleep with women left and right, you are unpredictable, you are still mourning Tim and-"

"I didn't know today was going to be a billion things wrong with Arizona day!" she scoffed.

Danny sighed. "What I'm trying to say that it's tough being on tour and thinking what your girlfriend is doing, or who she is sleeping with and-"

"Danny, we are not dating, we are barely friends. I have no idea where all of this is coming from."

"Do you think I'm blind, that I can't see the two of you flirting?" He asked.

Arizona scoffed. "This is not your problem, stay out of it!"

"Arizona, she's broken! She doesn't leave her office, she doesn't say a word beyond assigning tasks to people. She is not ready for Hurricane Arizona!"

The blonde crossed her arms, "Hurricane Arizona?"

"You obliterate everything in your path! You have a tendency to not care about people-"

"Don't you dare!"

"The people you sleep with!" He finished his sentence. "There's a lore going around about how she lost her entire family, that she used to be married or engaged or something and lost them on duty."

This got Arizona's attention. The Captain was married? Or well, she was in a relationship that meant deep enough to go to that stage with someone?

"I didn't know…"

"All I'm saying is, be careful. She probably expects more than you can give to her right now," he explained.

The blonde nodded. "We umm, we should get drinks," she said before walking to the bar. She was not sure what to do, but she knew Danny had a point, Callie was a stranger to her.

The two of them grabbed each grabbed a bucket full of beer and made their way out.

Arizona thought that they were just playfully flirting with each other that it was nothing serious. She didn't know that Callie was looking for commitment or well, something deeper. She was not ready for that. Danny was right, she was still mourning the loss of her brother and making sense of what she wanted from her art and if she wanted to continue when she felt like she had absolutely no motivation. She was not ready to take on having a girlfriend in the Marines. She was not ready for a relationship when she didn't know what she wanted to do in life.

But fuck! It felt so good! She remembered that the day Callie's letter arrived would be the best day ever! She would read the letter a million times and then some. It felt like she was floating as if she could almost hear her voice as she read her letter. It was a shame that she had to stop, stop before things got too difficult.

As the Robbins siblings appear with the buckets. Callie moved to make space for Arizona but then she took a seat opposite from her. It felt almost as if she was trying to run as far away from her as possible. She shook that feeling off. After all, she was hogging too much of her time today and she was here to take a break with her friends. It wouldn't be nice if she completely forgot about her friends and spent absolutely no time with them. She saw a shiver go up the blonde as she took a sip of the ice cold beer. Callie slowly got up and draped her towel on Arizona's shoulders.

"I don't need it," she responded.

"No, it's okay, take it. I feel pretty toasty."

"Serious Callie, I'm fine." Arizona replied before turning to her brother.

That was strange. Almost since the first time they exchanged letters Arizona has been calling her Calliope almost exclusively. Either there was something that was seriously bothering her or that she was being reclusive because of her friends around her, but again that didn't seem the case but she decided not to think too much about it and just move on.

Suddenly, Callie heard the familiar ding on her phone. She picked it up and saw that it was a text from her father.

'Can we talk?'

The first thought that popped into Callie's head was that how did he know that she's back? And soon that was followed by how much did he know about her.

She quickly excused herself from the group and decided to dial her father.

"Hey Papi, is this urgent?"

"Mija, you are in Miami and you didn't even bother telling me? When did you get back?"

"I'm not here for long, it was an impulse decision so I'm not here for long, I'm just taking a small break," Callie had still not forgiven him for the things he said to her after she came out to him. But Carlos was trying to be better and she respected that. It didn't make things magically better, but she was trying and so was he.

"How are you Calliope?"

"I'm doing good, I'm okay I guess?" She looked back at the group and saw the blonde looking at her "Listen Papi, I have to go, I'll talk to you soon okay?"

"What about Christmas Mija? Will you be coming home?"

Callie sighed. She did have some leave saved up for Christmas and yes it had been a while since she saw her parents or any of her family really, but then did she want to see them?

"I don't know."

"We miss you, all of us and it would be lovely if you joined us!"

Callie scoffed. "Are you sure all of you miss me?"

"She means well Calliope she is just-"

"I don't care Papi, you heard the things she said to me! I just can't! After all of that, I'm not strong enough to sit through another one of rants of her calling me an abomination and- and unwomanly and unnatural."

"She needs time, that's all" her father tried to explain.

"And a Christmas dinner would magically make it okay? The captain could feel her anger rising despite how much she tried to control herself.

"Calliope-"

"I gotta go. I'll think about Christmas and let you know okay?" she sighed.

"Take care Calliope."

"Yeah, bye," she said before cutting the phone and walking back to the group.

"Everything okay Captain?" Danny asked as she took her seat.

"Just about"

April and Teddy got up from their seat as they both stretched out "We are going to call it a night. Thanks for the drinks Callie and thank you all for your service."

The three Marines tipped their drinks before the girls started gathering their stuff.

"I'm going to go with them, make sure they get to their rooms," Jackson said as he walked to their rented house with them.

"I think I'm going to go with Sargent Avery, Arizona? You want to join us?" Danny asked as he indirectly indicated to his sister to take a hint.

"Yeah sure."

Callie knew something was up with the siblings. She knew Danny and he was never this way.

"Good night, you guys! I'm going to spend some more time here."

"Do you want some company?" Danny asked.

"No, I'm good," she replied before she looked at Arizona.

The blonde seemed to be avoiding all forms of contact ith her. Something was clearly bothering her. She just wanted to know what but it was clear that it wasn't possible with her brother around.

"Actually, Miss Robbins? Could I borrow your phone?"

"Umm sure."

Callie quickly called her own number on the blonde's phone before saving it. She knew that Arizona wasn't tired and maybe she could get her alone later and talk to her properly.

"Here you go," she said before handing it back. "Good night." she said before turning towards the sea.
