One of my earliest, happy memories is tearing open a small, rectangular Christmas present and finding a brand-new copy of A Link to the Past. It was the very first video game that I ever owned. My father got it for me, because a friend had told him that "It was a video game that did not rot children's' brains. It challenged them with puzzles, riddles, and tricks. And it had a wonderful, moral story of good vs. evil and how a young man can make a positive difference in the world, even against overwhelming odds."
But I do not cherish this memory because it was my first video game. I cherish it, because of the hundreds of hours my father and I spent playing it together. I wasn't very good at figuring out some of the puzzles, or trying to deduce what a boss' particular weakness might be. Dad was always the best help for these things. And so he would sit in his armchair – while I sat on the floor playing – and he would quietly watch; offering a little advice here or there, when I was getting completely frustrated.
This book is dedicated to my father. We didn't always see eye-to-eye on things… but you taught me to appreciate a good adventure, and to always pay attention to the little details.
Here follows: The Legend of Zelda: The War of Imprisonment - the tale of the worst tragedy in Hylian history and yet, life still found a way to carry on.
