Chapter 20
The two stood there in silence as they looked at each other, trying to take in the news that they had been hit with. Was it real? Was it actually happening? There were a million-thought going on in both of their minds. The blonde felt her phone buzzing and, in her rage, she pulled it out of her pocket and threw it across the floor. Luckily the carpet stopped it from shattering into pieces, but there was still a dull thud as the device met the surface.
"Sugar Lips!" Callie snapped out of her daze.
"That thing… That stupid fucking thing!"
"You need to breathe, come sit down." Callie said as she reached out her arms but the blonde shook them off and started pacing.
"You are going to war, actual war! People die there! People have already died there and lord knows how many more are fighting for their lives," she said as she continued walking back and forth rubbing her temples as she felt an awful headache coming on.
"We have talked about this before, I told you-"
Arizona suddenly spun around to face the brunette. "We should get married."
"What?" Callie had no idea where this is coming from.
"If we get married, then they have to send your body back to me, to your spouse, then I'd get to know if you died and I wouldn't have to keep on wondering what's going on…"
"What are you saying?"
"No, they do this whole thing that if your body is recovered, that is if it isn't blown to bits. These two soldiers come to your house with you know, a letter in their hand. 'The letter' that they make you write in case you die. With Tim, they came to our house. I think his girlfriend stop receiving letters from him about a month ago, but they came to my parent's house because he wasn't married and it was this whole thing about having to call her and seeing her breaking down in our house, hearing my mom crying and dad. He just walked away as if it was a regular day. But we knew because he was their son and my brother, we were his immediate family. So, let's get married, that way I would know.."
This time Callie approached the blonde grabbed her arms and led her to the couch. She made her sit down on the couch before taking her palms in her own.
"We are not getting married."
"But-"
"No, I refuse to get married because the world is going to shit, that I have been called to duty and it ends up being a rushed wedding. I will not sign some paper in a court house and call it a day. I want to be in my uniform, I want you to wear a beautiful white gown. I want to watch you walk down the aisle holding the most elegant bouquet of flowers in your hand. You're going to look so beautiful that I might end up forgetting my vows to you and just end up promising you the entire universe. I want to declare our love in front of our friends and family. I want a marriage."
"You do?"
"I do."
One week ago
Arizona and Callie were taking a walk together when the blonde saw a pet shelter and decided to drag the Marine inside. It was like Arizona was hopped up on candy as she stuck her face next to each cage and greeted the puppies.
"Why don't we get one?" The blonde asked as she looked up at Callie.
"Because you live in a dorm where pets aren't allowed and I live in a penthouse suite, the poor thing would have to wait at least ten minutes before it can relieve itself. Besides, I'm a Marine, I'm barely on land. Who would look after the poor puppy when I'm gone?"
"Why do you have to live on the thirty-third floor?"
"Because I like waking up to a skyline? What kind of a question is that?" The brunette asked.
"Never mind, I forget that I asked you that question," she said before storming out of the store.
"Baby! Wait!"
"What?" She asked angrily.
"What happened? Why are you mad at me?"
"I don't know. Let's see, you just told me to my face that you don't see a future with me, with anyone, anything beyond the Marines."
"Sugar lips, that's not what I meant!"
"You said you didn't want a puppy, a week from now you'll tell me that you don't want to have sex with me anymore and then poof, you'll be gone, back to sea!"
Arizona waited for the brunette to say something, but since she didn't get a reply, she decided to walk on. Callie then grabbed her by her wrist before she pulled her towards her and hugged her from behind.
"I see a house in the future. A nice one maybe five bedrooms, two floors, no carpets though. I see a white picketed fence with a huge backyard."
"What else you see in your future?" The blonde wishfully asked.
"I see a pool in the backyard, lot of grass that would put my back out of commission mowing and weeding. Maybe a couple of chairs on the front porch."
"What about a swing set?"
Callie pretended to think. "Hmm, I was thinking of putting it on the front porch, but I could put in the backyard if that's what you prefer? The kids would love it either way."
"No, I like it on the porch, that way the kids could play on the swing while we drink some coffee."
The blonde smiled as she realized that the two of them wanted kids.
"How many kids would you want?"
"More than one at least. How many do you see?"
Callie tightened her hold on the blonde. "I see three."
"Three?"
"Yeah, our oldest would be a boy. He'd be the star athlete, the humblest person on the planet that was too perky and optimistic for his own good. He would be the one helping me mow the lawn while you got us lemonade. He would be the kind of guy that everyone would turn to for advice, that everyone felt comfortable in confiding. He'd get in trouble because he would be so passionate about social causes, that we would have to talk him down from doing something too extreme, but he'd still join the protests and fight for what's right."
"I like that," the blonde signed.
"The second would also be a boy."
Arizona turned around in the tan arms before circling her arms around her lover's neck while Callie held her waist.
"Two boys? That sounds like a nightmare for us."
"Yeah, but he'd take after you. He'd be the creative on who would just want to paint all day and hide behind his sketchbook. The two of you could spend years discussing crayons, paint brushes, pencils and all the wonders of the art world. Every week the two of you would have your one-on-one time as you toured the new art gallery that just opened up. While the rest of the kids and I would go bowling or get some ice cream."
"I want to go bowling too!"
"Then we'd stay indoors maybe watch trashing reality show together."
"Hmmm, I liked that better. What about our youngest? Would we have three boys or would it be a girl?"
"Our youngest would be a girl."
"Yay!"
"She'd have the both of us wrapped around her pinky finger. She would be the daredevil and often get into trouble, but with the help of her brothers she would be an unstoppable force of nature."
"Just like me?"
"Just like you," she agreed. "She would insist on getting a puppy and we would give in and get one for her birthday."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, or there would be war and I get called in and die on duty."
Arizona lightly hit the brunette's arm. "What are the chances that we go to war?"
"Slim, but definitely not none."
"Those odds sound good to me."
Arizona suddenly lunged forward in the brunette's arms wanted to wrapped herself up in the most comfortable place she knew.
"Will you be able to write me?"
"I think so, they might not be the best at delivering them, but I promise I'll write to you."
"And you'll be honest with me? You will tell me if you get to hurt or wounded?"
"Sugar lips I cannot share such information."
"Calliope! I want to know how you are doing!"
The brunette gently nodded as she ran her fingers through her lover's hair. The two of them could hear Arizona's phone buzzing but no one seemed to care at the moment.
"Ummm… can you take my niece Thalia to Disneyland? We promised her that we'd go next week so could you go with her?"
"Without you?"
"Yeah…"
The blonde pulled back to look at the Latina. "We can push it and wait for you to come back and then we can all go together. She would understand."
It was as if the fact that she could die suddenly started sinking in her head. The brunette had never seen death, apart from her fiancé dying. But she had just gotten a letter. She never saw destruction, the loss of lives.
"Promise me you'd still go if-"
"Calliope no."
"She likes you Arizona. She needs this, if she cannot have me. I'd rather she has you in her life fulfilling all the promises I made to her."
"But you are coming back."
"I am, but this is just… I want her to not morn, she's too young for that."
Arizona nodded. Just then the blonde's phone went off for the millionth time.
"You gotta pick up that phone."
"What could possibly be more important?" The brunette shrugged.
Arizona walked over to the place where her phone landed to see Danny's name on the phone. Fuck! She forgot about her brother. She immediately hit the call button and put it on speaker
"Did you get called too Danny?"
"Yeah, they booked me a flight in the next three hours."
"Three hours! You cannot leave. I need to hug you Danny you cannot just go."
"Are you with Captain Torres?"
But before Arizona could answer the brunette spoke up.
"Sargent Robbins, I will make sure Miss Robbins gets to Michigan before you leave."
"How? Even if she left for the airport now, what are the chances she finds a plane that leaves for Michigan?"
"I'll handle it."
"Captain, I'm almost scared to ask, did you get called too?"
"Yeah, I have a bit more time to get my things in order."
The line was silent for a while. "I… God save us all. I'll see you at the airport Arizona." Danny said before he cut the call.
The brunette risked a look at the artist who had tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I have a jet that's here, I can make sure you get on it and land in Michigan before Sargent Robbins leaves."
The blonde nodded. "Please keep him safe."
"Of course, I will."
"I-I mean it, I cannot lose him too. I cannot bury another one of brothers."
Callie nodded before she held her in her arms and hugged her tightly, almost trying to sear it in her brain about how it felt to be with her. "I'll call a cab for you."
"What about you, you won't be coming with me?"
Callie licked her dry lips. "I have a few things to take care off. I have to visit my dad, my sister before I leave. But you, you need to head to the airport right now."
In that moment, Arizona was torn. She had to go see her brother, but if she left, she wouldn't be able to see off the Latina. That this was it.
"You cannot stay back here for me Sugar lips, he is your brother, you need to be with family right now."
"This is so not fair."
Callie ran a shaky hand through her hair. "I ummm, I need you to move on. Don't wait for me."
"What?"
"You should live your life. I want you to graduate, to find love, to marry someone and raise a family with her."
"But what about our house? Our children? The white picketed fence, the swing and the pool?"
"I want all of that for you."
"I want all that with you."
"Sugar lips, you cannot wait on me and put your life on hold. If it's meant to be, it will happen, but I don't want you give up your life for me, okay?"
The blonde nodded before she stood up and started making her way to the door. Every fiber in her being.
"Wait," Callie said before she pulled her into her arms and kissed her hard on her lips. She wanted to tell her so much about so many things about her feeling and emotions, in that one kiss, she wanted to kiss her in a way that would make up for all the days she would be away. She wanted all the happiness in the world for the blonde even if she couldn't be part of the said happiness.
As the need of air become evident, the two of them pulled apart as they rested their heads together.
"If I wasn't leaving right now, I would tell you that I love you."
"I would tell you that I love you too."
A/N: So… how are we feeling about this? I think I have it figured out how I want to do with the story, but any and all suggestions are welcomed. Thank you for reading and reviewing. Do you want a bit of a time jump or do you want to read about Callie with her family and Arizona with hers as they said goodbye to each other?
