The Ancients:
For the uninitiated, parallel to mundane existence was an entire hidden society. Magical England was essentially a little enclave that existed within the United Kingdom. This society was self-contained and had little interaction with the mundane world. These people were born with a rare gift.
These people could use their thoughts to manipulate reality.
Harry Potter was unaware of his membership within this genetically gifted group of individuals. He was also unaware of how his birth had been engineered. The intention of his grandfather had always been for him, Harry Hadrian Potter, to surpass the rest with raw strength and potency in his bloodline.
It had been argued by 'Wizarding Royalty' with more welcoming views of 'Magical Commoners' that the new blood being brought into the magical world, would secure the longevity of the gift. The majority had argued otherwise – the contamination of the gift could only occur as they integrated the commoners' blood. Of course, these names were not the established conventions. Perhaps 'pureblood' and 'muggleborn' were better substitutions for ideas like 'Wizarding Royalty' and 'Magical Commoner'. These ideas were somewhat analogous to England's somewhat functioning Peerage system. Naturally, the 'muggleborns' were considered inferior to the 'purebloods' and the idea of who bred with who to produce children was a hotly debated topic.
Fuck the Wizengamot was a view that Charlus Potter had often expressed – He did not consider the magical world to be detached from the mundane world, and he had often campaigned against discriminatory practices, in the latter part of his life. However, the Wizengamot who was culturally similar to the Victorian era House of Lords preferred policies that favoured their immediate economic interests. Also, anything that allowed them a power trip was also deemed appropriate.
Purebloods with much milder views were often the exception, but such was the view of Charlus Potter, as the Head of House Potter. According to him, constant inbreeding purely between magical folk would lessen the ability to channel magic. While the ultra-right-wing types accused him of having no proof, Charlus casually observed that pureblood children were now fumbling with spells that were much easier with the older generations. Charlus had begun to notice such an issue in their lineage based on historical accounts, and he dared to risk losing the recognition of some of the "Sacred Twenty Eight", a group of politically powerful purebloods, to fix the impending issue. He had been lucky that his son James was fairly powerful, but what about ten generations down the road?
He wondered about the long term survival of House Potter.
So, what could Charlus do, to fix the impending issue with the Potters? He would do nothing, as he eventually got an arrangement that would please him, in any case. His fears were put to rest by his son James.
Charlus had initially planned an arranged marriage for his son, with a foreign pureblood witch of his choice to fix the issues with the bloodline. The progeny of this union, would surely test his theory? If the latent power of his grandson was truly large at birth, perhaps the knowledge could stay within the house, and the Potters could pick up desirous traits from new bloodlines? Yes, Charlus mused – this would be beneficial, and perhaps they could even embrace the newer things that had come about in the muggle world?
Charlus was open to any idea that conferred an advantage to his lineage. After all, his lineage were warriors first, and anything else later.
Rambunctious James Potter already had other ideas, and they were coincidentally in the same vein as his father's long term goals - So Charlus allowed the boy to exercise his choice. James during his time at Hogwarts (the premiere magical secondary school of England) only had eyes for a single muggleborn witch, Lilly Evans. At first, Charlus wondered if it was merely a crush - but James never seemed to give up, after chasing her for seven years. One day, he inquired as to the talents of this particular witch, after it had been established that James had managed to score a single date with her in Hogsmeade.
When Charlus began to hear tales of Lilly's prowess as an intelligent and talented witch, he knew that this could be the opportunity of a lifetime. Better yet, instead of a marriage contract that obligated James to perhaps an amicable union at best, and murder as the worst possible outcome, his son would be one of the few wizards to also enjoy what he and Dorothea Potter nee. Black had shared and treasured - A marriage that was the result of genuine love. Many Magical researchers (Unspeakables) had commented that the union of a man and a woman in love, gifted the child with a better connection to Magic, and this was surely desirable.
Charlus decided to meet the young woman and found himself laughing at her trademark brand of deadpan but insulting humour. She even went as far, as to insist that perhaps Charlus was an 'old dog' that could learn new tricks and that he was not set in his ways, to consider her worthy of conversation. He supposedly possessed a 'modicum of sensibility, as a grumpy oldtimer.' Such statements could be considered insults, and yet Charlus adored the girl for her brutal scalding comments. She was brave and she had a backbone. Perhaps she was quite intelligent, but it seemed that she was utterly fearless in her convictions. These frank conversations continued as Lilly began to share more of her ideas and her personality as the time passed, and she became a regular at Potter Manor.
Charlus openly welcomed Lilly into his family, and he became his favourite daughter. Sometimes James, wondered if he was now the second fiddle. As Charlus began to discuss magic with Lilly, it became apparent that she was a consummate genius and that her ideas would one day change the world. Some of the questions posed to him by Lilly were so deep and insightful, that he found himself contemplating them late at night. His grandson would receive the benefit of both muggle and magical education if Lilly's mind was the result of the process.
Finally, Harry was born at a Muggle hospital, because of the ongoing war between Lord Voldemort and Wizarding England at large. A single touch from Charlus confirmed his suspicions easily. Harry had enough power to be a Battle Warlock – one of the most feared types of combatants that the magical world could produce. His grandson would be powerful enough to rival the Pottarius fighters of old, as long as he immersed himself in the house magic. This was something that had not occurred in many generations – James was fairly powerful, but his strength had come from a mixture of Black and Potter blood. Members of these great magical houses had never been married in history, and Charlus was now happy that his grandson would build upon the blood, that James had inherited.
Just one marriage had rectified the issue. The new mandate was simple – all Potter men would marry whomever they loved, as this would truly preserve the lineage. Little did Charlus know, that this experiment would serve his grandson well in the tumultuous times ahead. While the boy under the Dursley roof had little idea of the latent power within himself, he tried his best to endure his living conditions, as the abuse continued.
Greater entities were busy at work, and they were observing intently. From the galactic perspective, the self-imposed separation between these societies (muggle and magical) was merely a complex piece of civilizational engineering. Another experiment was being prepared, as the overlords outside space and time plotted to turn the cosmic machinery of the universe.
Goddess Hecate – Lady Magic became frustrated with the pain that Harry Potter was being asked to shoulder once again, and decided to take deliberate action.
Goddess Hecate, Lady Magic, or Lady-She-Who-Creates had been known by many names throughout Terran history. Often, she was portrayed as the goddess of the earth, a deity of the soil, and the protector of the household. Of course, muggle and wizard alike were not aware that she was merely one of many caretakers of all existence. She manifested anywhere consciousness existed in the cosmos at large and she oversaw all of creation, at least for the Milky Way galaxy. This was a rather large domain containing many decillions of sentients. She looked upon life, and she nurtured it. After all, the threads of fate often chose underdogs to weave stories, that would become a part of the cosmos, for all eternity.
Harry Potter was not the only case on her itinerary. She had many other billions of cases to deal with individually. Something however hinted to her that powers beyond the boy's control were interested in his mundane life. An intuition you could call it – she often wondered why Harry Hadrian Potter, as such a gentle loving soul, had suffered this much as a child.
She was a mother of all things, and mothers did not leave their children in pain.
"Plans within Plans…" she bemusedly muttered. With a heavy heart, Lady Magic made her way to the residence of Lord Time-Space at the Sagittarius A Black Hole, to have a word with her friend.
Lord Time-Space was the custodian of the timeline. He governed the many cyclic aspects of time - the passing of the ages, the future of the stars, and the various realities as the sentients exercised their choices. He had seen the beauty and the cruelty of it all and was never moved by suffering. Stoic was he, in his interpretation of things for such was the domain of the living and the dead.
From dust, life would emerge and through dust, it would return.
Both Lady-She-Who-Creates and Lord Time-Space had been gifted the pinnacle of responsibility. She would bring about life, and he would merely record the information across all of the timestreams as he managed the titanic forces of the universe. The laws of life and decisions that could be influenced by sentients were hers to shape as she pleased, but the laws of nature and reality were his to command and tweak.
The rumoured Illuminators were supposedly a group of Eternals that presided over the multiverse at large – a truly incomprehensive civilization not even bound to time or any other concept. These beings could shape any number of smaller universes to their will, via their proxies. Administration of the mantle of all things fell to the proxies or caretakers, like herself and Lord Time-Space. The Illuminators were supreme, their motivations unknown and hidden. And so, stories played out across the cosmos to turn the gears of the universe. They were certainly turning for the little boy in the Dursley household.
While it was true that Lady Magic had been given a particular instance of the timestream to govern the 'shaping of life', after she set up the necessary cosmic machinery on a planet, most of the events played out for themselves. Lady Magic after starting a civilizational seed on many a world would occasionally nudge various species into her desired pathway. Her visits would take her all over the galaxy over many billions of worlds. The motto was simple:
Touch and go. Touch and go. Minimal meddling, for maximum results.
As Lady Magic shaped life, Lord-Time space would additionally document the history of all things as they occurred – according to him, the actions of the living were tied into the behaviour of that which was physical. Sometimes the atom that could trigger a civilisation ending supernova, could often be traced to the wiggling of a person's toe. Every action, every cascade, every calculation, he calculated again and again. It had become a favourite pastime for both of them to look upon certain events, which would echo throughout the universe.
Humanity had been one of the few sentient civilizations, that had been genetically primed to receive the gift of mass-energy manipulation. These species who had been 'genetically primed', would be able to biologically command mass and energy to their will within a limited part of their environment. Humans as the youngest race to receive the gift had named the practice 'Magic' and over the last thirty millennia, they had passively developed the skill. The active development of it had occurred within the last ten millennia, and yet their utilization of it remained somewhat primitive.
Forty thousand years of the gift and the humans were still moving along at the speed of a snail.
The Humans puzzled Lady Magic greatly. Humans were the only civilization that had not achieved faster than light travel and they were confined to their world of origin. Yet the Illuminators had made a special request for this upliftment to occur, aeons ago. Perhaps it was an experiment? It would not be an unheard proposition. She had sadly scrapped the first form of reptilian life on the planet once before, or as the Terrans had called it…the Dinosaurs.
Lady Magic arrived as she fell into the event horizon and slipped into the thirteen-dimensional tesseract and found herself at a small hut, which her friend had chosen to materialize for their interaction, probably out of politeness. After all, these beings did not require physicality or language to communicate. Nonetheless, the equivalent interaction that organics could comprehend could be expressed as follows:
"Good afternoon miserable, come to disturb my afternoon now?" muttered Lord Time-Space in his most passive-aggressive voice. Behind that comment, however, was a certain familiar warmth that old friends shared.
"Causing public unrest is what I do. Afternoon to you too. You know how it goes" replied Lady Magic with a sense of resignation. "I have complaints?" she expressed with a tinge of humour, that coloured her voice.
"Any chance one of them is about a young man named Harry Potter?" he queried, clearly somewhat more alert and even curious.
"One of many complaints I have this afternoon. What is the problem with my boy hmm? He already has too much going on, can he at least get a break?" she questioned, with her voice becoming soft, out of concern.
"He will be getting a decent chance this time around by the order of management upstairs."
Lady Magic folded her arms, raised her eyebrows, and truly began to explain her displeasure as her voice crescendoed to a thundering volume. Her voice was now sharp as the edge of a blade, and her eyebrows were approaching an acutely slanted 'V'.
"The first fluke on that planet was the dinosaurs. I left for a while, only to return after checking in on my work elsewhere. I was asked to clear them out 65 megacycles ago. I restarted with humanoid life and I was told by management to just trickle the mass-energy manipulation rather slowly into their genetic potential. I come back to Terra after visiting Tau-Ceti Major. And now you are telling me that management is directly involved in the boy's life?
DIRECTLY INVOLVED?"
"Woman, I do not make the rules around here, why are you trying to rip my head off?" asked Lord Time-Space.
"Harry Potter is just a young man, and he is trying! Please tell me they are not going to make him suffer more! What do they have planned for him? This is not right….why…"
"Mother Hen, can you calm yourself woman? Let me explain fully and do not cut across before you make assumptions and exhaust me. You act like we have a workers union!"
Lady Magic became silent but the vexation was quite present in her face. Lord Time-Space began his clinical monologue:
"I have seen Harry Potter demonstrate high efficacy and efficiency with dealing with the wheel of time. In the prime timeline, Dumbledore grooms him and he wins the battle against Lord Voldemort. It happens via hidden manipulation, but it works well enough. He marries Ginny Weasley and it is all good. In another timeline, he is rescued by Arcturus Black and is trained mercilessly and given access to his heritage. He wins the day and marries Daphne Greengrass and it is happy ever after. In another timeline, he gets access to a Phoenix and gets involved with Susan Bones. Same theme, he wins the day. The issue at large is that management would like to test the synergistic union of 'the gift' along with traditional materialistic science. In all the other timelines, he takes a purely magical approach to solving the problem. Management is interested in exploring how a more blended approach fares in the long term."
"Is that all?" Lady Magic asked.
"No. Management also wants to see what pathway the civilizational developmental model will take - will he change things for his species going down the road? Many other civilizations get access to the gift when they have already established their identity. Mass-energy manipulation becomes an extra, not necessarily the essence of the species. The crux of the issue is that the magical world does not integrate with the technological world in most timelines, across many civilizations. They stay mostly separate with some overlap. The current timeline of Harry Potter you have complaints about is staggered behind the prime timeline by nineteen years. Your Harry Potter was born on July 31st of 1999, on the cusp of the new millennium.
Management wants to see what happens. Most importantly, the natural laws of magic have manifested predictably for this specific timestream. It can play nicely with scientific development."
"Explain some more – I don't get to decide how mass-energy manipulation plays out as I am a life-shaper. How is it different for this timestream?" replied Lady Magic.
"Magic in the prime timeline was rather odd with random zero-point matrix fluctuations manifesting in unusual ways. Food could be duplicated infinitely, raw materials could be conjured from nowhere, energy requirements for spells were random, spells had no cost to cast, you can enlarge objects without consequence, things could stay weightless forever? I wondered who would have been the first to transmute mass directly into energy, but we are lucky such a thing did not happen. Why, it would have been interesting to see Terra blow itself to bits. The prime timeline was disgusting – I am a man of order and logic and I found dealing with that madhouse reality taxing. However, the simplex-duality-reconciliation equations required that instance of the universe to behave exactly in that manner. This time, I was given a certain brand of primordial consciousness to mould into physical matter, and for this instance of this universe and the mass-energy manipulation is so stable and ordered, it merits investigation." answered lord Time-Space.
"So, because you can, and because they ask, we must do it. You and your little rulebooks. Argh, give me a quick reminder of what is going on here, I haven't been here a while. I just started looking at cases yesterday, and the boy popped up."
"In short, technology is somewhat ahead, but the social circumstances are much different. British schools still use the 11+ exam, the traditional tripartite grammar school system continues to be king, Goblins are willing to use guile if necessary, salaries are different, social circumstances for people are different, some individuals are slightly older or younger - I mention these things because you must plan around these adaptations. Some events happened earlier and some will happen later than expected. It is not my business to look upon mundane history and examine the behaviour of the material lifeforms if I am not committing the events to living history, but I would prefer if we both got a top-tier evaluation for our work here. Management is directly observing this instance in particular. Please see the records listed for the quaternary Holtzman Timestamp" replied Lord Time-Space
Lady Magic touched the records and acquainted herself with the documentation.
"Well grumpy, this is interesting" she replied.
"Yes, it is. Essentially, different enough from the prime timeline for your subject to possibly do wonderful things, but some of the same themes are revisited. I am explaining this to you because I know you love when underdogs win the day. Management upstairs believes Harry Potter has the right circumstances to begin creating constructs that leverage both traditional 'science' and biological mass-energy manipulation, particularly in this timeline."
"As I feared, they have a personal interest in the boy! I thought it was a general interest in the Terran civilization at first. No this is not right. He is a boy, not a piece of meat." Lady Magic complained. The last time she had spoken to her friends who were responsible for the Pegasus and Andromeda Galaxy, they had mentioned similar experiments. Young civilizations were not sufficiently prepared, and it resulted in catastrophic destruction. The killer novas were so prolific, that it resulted in the various galaxies taking on the appearance of Terran Swiss cheese in those particular timelines. As she gathered her resentment mentally, Lord Time-Space continued…
"The decision has already been made. Harry Potter will be provided with the tools to do well but not necessarily the initiative. The effort will have to come from him. His Lord Voldemort is older and more experienced. As we are both aware of the request, your job will be to provide the tools of your choice and I will merely provide documentation to management about the boy's performance. So, let us see how efficient you are. I have already set a rather unique stage after all."
Lady Magic closed her eyes for a split second, before examining Harry Potter closely. She had decided on a rather unconventional approach, but it worked out…he could possibly change human history. She committed herself to her plan of action.
"Better prepare yourself then. He is one of the many individuals who you should never count out" Lady Magic replied with a certain finality. "In fact," she thoughtfully pondered, "I think I just might know the two things he needs. I can say that providing just these two tools will allow him to gather the rest of the facilities that he needs by himself."
"My my, already you have evaluated the situation. That would be an unprecedented amount of efficiency concerning your response time. And only two things, truly minimal meddling for maximum results. You will be the talk of the local thirty galaxy cluster for this galactic spin. I hope you are aware that while I am curious, I am not emotionally invested in this case. No favours from me, for the boy." Lord Time-Space explained.
"So, what will you be giving him?" he queried as he pulled out his notepad and pen, to begin recording his observations.
"Keep being a grump. Just watch Harry beat the odds. I am going to give him a good bird. A trusty lightning phoenix and a good teacher who is invested in him at his school. Simple things, but effective things. And if I win this out, I want a garden world to create life - that planet that orbits right outside your house, I suspect that silicon-based organic life can thrive on the energy given off an accretion disk. Some real prime goldilocks zone real estate there. I should be ready for my garden world in a standard humanoid kilocycle."
"Fine you are on, miserable twat" Lord Time-Space replied. It was at this moment that Lady Magic enlisted the services of Ms Priya V. Singh. She was a Hogwarts alumnus who had left the magical world out of victimization, and she would nurture Harry Potter out of his childhood pain into his final form:
A Techno-Battle Mage.
He would rain death on the magicals who had supported Lord Voldemort during England's last Wizarding War. Harry Hadrian Potter would make them tremble in fear, when he combined both disciplines, or at least so she suspected. Lady Magic also knew of a young female lightning phoenix in Norway that would be up to the job of providing him with companionship and the necessary mobility to get her plans into action. She provided the young phoenix with the location of Harry Potter and commanded her to fly to the young wizard.
The famed Storm-Talon lineage was going to make its mark in Wizarding England.
