*Yawn*
It was only 7 am but Midoriya Izuku was standing outside the local mall.
Why you may ask?
Apparently the Aeon supermarket was having a storewide sale for early birds.
So knowing his luck Izuku came as early as he possibly could.
'Only half an hour more…' Izuku glanced at his cracked phone screen.
*Glare…*
'Half an hour more…' Izuku slowly shifted his eyes to the weird blonde guy who keeps staring at him.
He was wearing something that resembled knight armour if a knight came from an 80's disco club.
*Glare…*
And was making Izuku very very uncomfortable, although he did seem a little familiar.
"Ou, Mon ami! La belle demoiselle has arrived!"
"Pardon my french but, what?"
"Oui!" The blonde sparkly smiled.
"Mou, Aoyama-kun! What's the emergen- Midori-kun?" A pair of walking boots and gloves came running toward them.
"Hagakure-san? Wha?" Now he remembered! This blonde dude was from Ochako's class, Ao-Ao… Aokiji? No, Aoyama!
"It seems mon travail est terminé!" The strange boy bowed and took his leave in a trail of sparkles.
"…What?"
Wait, did the previous Midoriya Izuku know this guy? Surely he didn't know everyone in the hero course right?
"Ehe… Don't worry about it Midori, Aoyama-kun is just… Aoyama-kun."
"I…see…" Izuku sweat dropped.
"Wait, what are you two doing here anyway? Isn't it an internship day?"
"Yeah? So what do you think we're doing in a mall, in our hero costumes?"
He was an idiot.
"Oh right, patrolling…"
Hagakure giggled. "And you? It's pretty early, most of the shops aren't even open yet."
"Well…" Izuku pointed to the sign at the back.
"Pfft! Another sale!? It's so like you Midori!"
"Haha, yeah…" So the previous Midoriya Izuku was poor and desperate too!? Such Misfortune!
"Seems like you still have half an hour or so, wanna walk and chat while I patrol?"
While his misfortune sense was screaming 'NO YOU IDIOT HAVE YOU NOT LEARNED!?' Izuku was dead bored after waiting an hour at the entrance of the supermarket, and another 2 waiting for the mall to open.
"Sure, why not?" Because you may miss the sale again you idiot!
After about 10 minutes of mindless chatter, Izuku was starting to worry.
Not just because of the impending bout of misfortune that would keep him from his discount eggs, but because of the awkward state in which they left their last encounter.
Previously Uraraka Ochako and Midoriya Izuku had openly declared their relationship status in front of the whole class. While they may have left things on good terms, Izuku could still feel the palpable tension between Ochako and the other girls in class. Honestly Izuku didn't know where all this was coming from, sure Ochako kept it a secret from them but she still apologised.
Besides, they were all great girls. They were cute and in the hero course to boot, surely it be easy for them to get into a relationship with anyone they fancied. So what if Ochako was the first one to get a boyfriend, she was probably the unlucky one to be in a relationship with the most misfortunate boy in UA, or maybe even Japan. A tear fell from his eye as Izuku was thinking that he might actually be the unluckiest guy in the whole world.
"Hey, what's got you so depressed all of a sudden?" The transparent girl enquired.
"Such Misfortune…"
"Eh!? From what?"
"Nothing… it's just me."
"Mou! You're always doing that to yourself Midori-kun! Stop putting yourself down like that!" The floating gloves shook angrily through the air.
"But it's true! This Midoriya-san can't ever catch a break!" Izuku cried.
"It can't be that bad."
"Just the other day I tried to throw away an empty can on the floor, but it bounced off the bin and fell into a pond instead!"
"That doesn't seem so bad-"
"But I felt bad for littering so I dove into the pond to grab it."
"…Well at least you're being a good citizen-"
"And then the ducks in the pond started to attack me and ripped my clothes!"
"…Well at least-"
"And then when I finally got out with the can, some middle school kids took a look at me and dropped a 100 yen coin into the can!"
"…"
"But at that point I got so embarrassed I just threw the can into the trash with the 100 yen coin in it!"
At that point Hagakure was at a loss for words.
"Gomenasai."
Izuku simply sighed. "Maybe if I did have a quirk it would just end up being 'Extreme Misfortune' or 'Luck negation', something along those lines…"
"Eh? Isn't your quirk your right hand?" Hagakure was confused.
"Ah, no it's not. It seems like it, but I got tested by Recovery Girl. Not a single strand of quirk DNA in me."
"That's strange, doesn't your hand give off like radiation or something?"
"No, I've got tested for radiation too. The only real way to prove that it's there seems to be just constantly using a quirk on it, by all other accounts it shouldn't exist."
"But it does."
Izuku nodded.
"That's strange."
Izuku sighed. "Tell me about it, I should put it on a card. Midoriya Izuku: Unlucky Boy with strange hand, at your service."
"Sounds kinky."
Izuku deadpanned.
"Sorry, I've hung around Mina for too long."
"Speaking of hanging around…" Izuku looked around. "Where's Aoyama-san? Shouldn't you both be taking the same patrol route or something?"
Hagakure sighed. "Yeah…" Izuku understood her just from that sigh alone.
"But it's not that bad. Mina got paired with Yoroi Musha this week, and Aoyama-kun got the week before that, so next week's probably my turn to learn something from him."
"Oh, neat!"
"But for now, it's just you and me…" Hagakure slowly trailed off.
Izuku raised a brow. "Hagakure-san?"
"Hey Midoriya-kun…" Hagakure spoke in almost a whisper.
"Yeah?"
"C-Could you do me a favour?" She sounded quite nervous.
"Umm, sure I guess?"
"Great! Come'ere!" Hagakure grabbed his left arm and dragged him toward the… wait is that the girl's bathroom?
"H-Hagakure-san?" Izuku nervously sweated.
"Just trust me!"
"That's a lot of trust!"
Hagakure halted in front of the entrance. "Wait here!"
"R-Right…" 'Oh, thank god!'
A minute or so later Hagakure came out wearing a cute pink and blue striped singlet, alongside a pair of short shorts.
Wait where did she even get the clothes from?
"Ano… If you don't mind…"
Izuku couldn't see her face but he could just tell she was staring at his right hand.
"Ah! Sure, here you go." Izuku held up his right hand to her.
"Thanks!" Hagakure grabbed into his right hand and the invisible power of Imagine Breaker showed itself.
*BREAK*
As well as Hagakure Tooru.
It was as if she appeared out of thin air, the floating clothes no longer looked as empty as they did before.
"Hehe! Thanks Midori!" Hagakure happily giggled, as she whipped out her phone to take a better look at herself.
She had big round eyes with bushy eyelashes and messy light blue hair. All in all she honestly looked-
"Adorable." Izuku blurted out.
"Eh? EH!?" Hagakure exclaimed, blushing for the first time since… since…
"Ne, ne Midoriya-san!"
"Ah?"
"Go on a date with me!"
Midoriya Izuku was walking back to his dorm room after an exhausting day of classes, when this invisible girl suddenly came up to him.
After the brief respite of the sports festival, Midnight was merciless in her assignment deadlines. Well, Izuku could have planned his time better in between training and taking care of Eri, but he didn't think he need to take her class again after the festival was over. But unfortunately for him, he lost and Shinsou Hitoshi took that spot in the hero course instead.
So while Izuku was being crushed by the weight of his homework, this transparent girl was crushing on him.
"Listen uhh…"
"Hagakure! Hagakure Tooru!"
"Right… Listen Hagakure-san, I'm a little… preoccupied at the moment."
"With what? I mean you didn't get into the hero course, so there's nothing going on that front."
"Ghk!" A direct attack!
"It's because I didn't get into the hero course that I'm buried beneath 5 tons of art history homework!"
"Art history?"
"Yeah, that one class I took because I liked to draw and thought it would be fun, but the professor just so happens to be a massive M."
"M? You mean Midnight-sensei?"
"That's right! First she gave me an essay on minimalistic design in hero costumes! Then a 800 word report of an interview with a hero student! And I have to get it done by tomorrow! How is this Midoriya-san supposed to get that done in…" Izuku checked the time. "16 Hours!? And where am I supposed to find a hero student in that time!? Everyone went back home for the sports festival break except for me!"
"Umm… actually I'm from the hero course."
Izuku's eyes widened and suddenly realised the opportunity that fell into his lap.
"Please take pity on this Midoriya-san!" Izuku bowed.
"-And that is why I think Midnight's debut costume is a masterpiece, and that she was a genius ahead of her time!"
"And… CUT!" As Midoriya hit the stop button, he let out a sigh of relief as he slumped back into his chair.
"That should at least get me a B for this report." Izuku happily saved the recording on his phone.
Their date for what it was, just became an assignment rushing session for Izuku. And considering he wasn't planning to live after the last one he had, this was already the best date he ever had.
"Alright, just one last paragraph and I'm done with this essay…" It was easy work considering all he had to write about was a pair of gloves and boots, as minimalistic as hero costumes came.
"Great…" Hagakure droned.
"!" Izuku suddenly realised that he just spent the whole 'date' doing his homework, he wasn't being fair to Hagakure at all.
Sure, he didn't know exactly why she wanted to go out on a date with him of all people but all he did was take advantage of that kindness. He would blame his misfortune for every bad thing that happened to him, but this girl was feeling that exact same misfortune right now.
She was misfortunate for asking Midoriya Izuku of all people on a date.
So Izuku put his pen down and stopped feeling sorry for himself.
"Alright I'm done!"
"Wha-What! That fast!?"
"Yeah, I just rushed through it." Izuku lied.
"Great!" Hagakure cheerfully replied.
"So what did you want to do?"
"Ano…" Izuku could see her uniform's sleeves hovering, but inferred that the invisible girl was probably nervously playing with her fingers.
"H-How comfortable are you with t-touching a g-girl you b-barely k-know?"
"Wait what?" Is she asking for…
"T-T-The reason I asked you on a d-date was so I c-could…"
"GOMENASAI!" Izuku did a 90 degree bow.
"Eh?"
"I'm so sorry, but no matter how much of a help you were I just can't do it!"
"Oh…" Hagakure deflated.
"Even so, no matter how sad and desperate this Midoriya-san is, you should do it with someone you truly love!"
"You… You really think so?"
"Of course, I'm sure someone as adorable as you could probably find a hundred-no, a million more guys better than this useless Midoriya-san!"
"I-I'm sure you're exaggerating!"
"Of course not! After all I'm just a virgin!" Izuku shamelessly declared.
"…Pardon?"
"What I mean is that a girl as cute as you could probably find someone better and more experienced than this pathetic Midoriya-san, who has only been on one date that ended in tears and sand!"
"More experien- Oh no no no! That's not what I meant at all!"
"Huh?" Hold on a minute.
"AHH! After that whole tirade, did I just openly admit to being a virgin in front of a cute girl for absolutely no reason!? Such Misfortune!"
"I-It's alright! It's not that embarrassing! I'm a virgin too! A- Oh no, you're right! It is embarrassing to admit out loud! Kyah! For-Forget you heard anything!" The empty sleeves waved around frantically in front of him.
After a few more seconds of embarrassed crying, the awkward duo started to calm down.
Izuku finally broke the silence. "So, what did you actually want to do?"
Hagakure took a moment to steel herself, before reaching over and grabbing his right hand.
*BREAK*
It was like magic. Izuku knew that it wasn't a telekinetic trick, that there was actually a girl moving about in that uniform. But as Hagakure Tooru slowly began to manifest out of thin air, it felt so much more real to him.
"WHOA! IT ACTUALLY WORKED!" Hagakure gleefully cheered.
"Mirror! Is there a mirror anywhere!?" She scrambled.
Izuku quickly whipped out his phone and switched to his camera app.
Hagakure snatched the phone out of his hands and stared at the screen.
"Oh my god…" A tear fell from her eye.
"I-I never thought I'd e-ever be able to…" *Sniff* Hagakure placed a shaky hand over her mouth.
That's when it dawned on Izuku, Hagakure Tooru wasnt just any invisibility quirk user. She was a mutation quirk user, a mutation quirk which people are normally born with.
This was probably the first time in her life, Hagakure Tooru had ever seen her own face. Cute messy light blue locks decorated big round eyes, it was truly a shame no one wasn't able to see this adorable look of hers without the help of an misfortunate boy's right hand.
And how truly misfortunate was he to be born quirkless, if he had the privilege of being able to look at his own face, no matter how plain every single day. Yet another thing that he took for granted was something that this girl couldn't even obtain without this impossible power of his.
Maybe that was the real reason her hero costume was only gloves and boots, maybe it was the spiteful thought of not needing anything else in a costume when she would never be seen by anyone.
*Sniff* "S-Sorry about breaking down like that Midoriya-san…" *Sniff* "I-I just…"
Izuku gave her a kind smile. "There's nothing to be sorry about Hagakure-san, it's just a shame that no one else besides this Midoriya-san will be able to see this adorable side of you."
Hagakure blushed. "Thank you…"
An idea sprung in Izuku's head. "Or can they?"
"Hmm?"
With his phone's camera still on the selfie setting Izuku snapped a picture of the blushing maiden's face.
"There you go! Now everyone will be able to see!"
Hagakure stared at the picture with the widest smile on her face.
"Do you mind if I take a few more? I'll send the pictures over to my account of course."
"Sure! Take as many as you need, that way you won't need this unlucky Midoriya-san's hand the next time you want to look at yourself."
Hagakure suddenly paused and looked down at the right hand she was currently holding.
"Right…"
Sensing that something was off, Izuku asked. "Is something wrong?"
"It's just… I was hoping that we make this a more permanent arrangement?" Hagakure's face turned redder than it had ever been.
"Of course! Anytime you want, just give me a call and I'll negate your quirk for you." If Izuku could alleviate another girl's suffering by simply touching her with his right hand, he would gladly do it.
Her brows furrowed. "T-That's not what I meant!"
"Eh?"
"W-Would you consider…umm…h-h-handholding as an 'us' thing? "
An 'us' thing? What was she implying-
Izuku realised what she was asking for, there was no mistaking it this time.
Hagakure Tooru was asking to be in a relationship with him.
To be in a relationship with the bastard who did not treasure anything he had.
To be in a relationship with the idiot who would mess up anything he put his mind to.
To be in a relationship with the boy whose sole value was in his strange, unexplainable right hand.
To be in a relationship with Midoriya Izuku.
But was it truly worth it? Sure, she was incredibly cute and the relationship would benefit the both of them, but what kind of relationship would it truly be?
While Izuku truly wanted for Hagakure to be able to look at herself in the mirror every day, every morning when she woke up like everyone else did. Was that worth the struggle of being Midoriya Izuku's girlfriend?
He was an idiot who both failed the entrance exam and lost the sports festival.
He was a complete mess who couldn't get his priorities straight and did his homework at the very last minute.
He was plain on the outside and completely disgusting on the inside, instinctively calling every bad thing that happened to him 'misfortune' when he truly did not know the meaning of the word. Not while he was able to look himself in the mirror every morning of every day.
Was all that worth the joy of being able to look oneself in the mirror?
Or did she think that he was the only one that could ever be with her because of his right hand?
And so he gave her his answer.
"I'm sorry, but no."
"Eh!? N-No no no! I'm not asking you to have sex with me or anything! I just-"
"No Hagakure-san, I'm sorry but I won't date you." Izuku clarified.
"…Oh."
Hagakure finally let go of his right hand, her adorable face vanishing into nothingness.
"I-It's a-alright Midoriya-san you d-don't have to feel bad about it. I-I ju-"
*BREAK*
Whatever words Hagakure had for him quickly vanished as her face appeared once again.
Her adorable face that was covered in nothing but tears.
"Y-You k-know, i-it isn't such a bad thing being i-invisible after all!" Hagakure messily wiped her face. "A-At least no one can see me l-look like this." *Sniff*
Izuku gave Hagakure a moment to let her feelings out before telling her…
"I'm sorry."
"Huh? I told you it's fine! I-I don't even know why I said that! Hahaha, I probably wasn't thinking stra-"
"That's not what I'm sorry for."
"Huh?"
"I'm sorry the world made you feel this way."
Hagakure was confused. "A-About what?"
"I'm sorry the world made you feel like you can't be loved."
Now she was really confused. "What? What are you talking about?"
Izuku gave her a serious look. "Tell me, was it really just my right hand that made you come all this way during your break? To sit by and help me with my report for 2 hours straight? To ask me on a date and be your boyfriend?"
"I…"
"I just want an honest answer."
Hagakure slowly looked away from his gaze. "Yes."
"I don't blame you."
"What?"
"I don't blame you for doing all of that. If the reward was being able to see my own face for the very first time, I would dare to call whatever you did an absolute bargain."
If he was in her shoes, Midoriya Izuku would probably go to even greater lengths if he knew that he could finally see his own face. To finally be able look in the mirror and not see nothingness.
"That's why I'm sorry that the world made you think you can't be loved just because you can't be seen."
"T-That's not true!"
"Is it not? Then what would you have done? What if I fell sick and never attended the sports festival? What if I died and never made it to UA? What if this strange power in my right hand never existed in the first place? What would you have done then?"
"There are... alternatives... I… I would have probably got together with someone who could see me in another way… Like someone with an sensory quirk, or a blind person."
"Ok, let's say you do just that. Then what? How many blind people or people with sensory quirks will you date? And how many of them would actually love you for you? But more importantly would you actually fall in love with any of those people?"
"….What's your point? That I'll never be able to find true love? That I'll never be able to be in a normal relationship with this stupid quirk? Or do you just get off making me feel like utter shit? IS THAT IT!?" Hagakure screamed in anger.
But yet Midoriya Izuku retained his calm exterior. "My point is that you're cute. Your eyes, your hair, your face, all are undeniably adorable. But is that all you want everyone to see?"
Izuku let go of her hand, and the girl vanished once again.
"Are you saying that you can't be loved because people can't see you? Or are you saying that looks are the only thing Hagakure Tooru has?"
Izuku cupped her transparent face with his left hand.
"Because you're wrong! There's so much more to Hagakure Tooru than having cute eyes, cute hair and a cute face! Just because you're invisible doesn't mean you can't be loved!"
Hagakure went completely silent, but Izuku knew she was paying attention to every single word.
"So I'm sorry that the world made you feel that way… because you're adorable even when you're invisible."
"…How would you know that? We've known each other for only a couple of hours, we're practically strangers."
Izuku relaxed into a smile. "If a stranger like me can tell, what makes you think no one else would be able to?"
"…"
"So you if you really want to date someone, find somebody you know you like. This Midoriya-san isn't exactly the most pleasant person to be with, so don't put yourself through that unnecessary pain."
Izuku walked over to pack his things.
"Don't worry, I'll send you the pictures later. And if you really want to I'll still gladly lend you a hand, no pun intended."
With that Midoriya Izuku left the adorable girl alone.
"…I'm sorry too."
"Hmm?" Izuku turned back.
"I'm sorry that something made you feel like you'd be an awful boyfriend, Midori-kun!"
The invisible girl giggled adorably.
"Eh?" Midori-kun?
"Midori-kun?"
"Ah!" Izuku snapped back to the present.
"You ok? For a moment there, you seemed out of it?"
Izuku gave her a reassuring smile. "This Midoriya-san was just thinking about how bad at pep talks he is." He chuckled.
Hagakure pouted. "What did I say about, putting yourself down like that!?"
"Hai, hai, Gomen Hagakure-sama." Izuku teased.
"This guy…" Hagakure shook her head.
"By the way, sorry about doing this when you're already taken." She held up their interlocked hands.
Izuku smiled. "I think Ochako-san would understand your... unique circumstances."
"I-If you say so…"
*Ring*
"Oh, hold on a sec!" Hagakure reached for her phone.
"Aoyama-kun? Where have you be- What? Slow down! What do you mean there's a bom-"
*BOOOOOM*
