Emmett was bored.
Rosalie was out on a shopping spree with Alice, Esme had gone into town, and Edward was sulking in his bedroom like he loved to do. Carlisle, of course, was at work.
So that left him with no one but Jasper.
Jasper, who was sitting in the living room reading what Emmett knew to be his third book of the day. The airplane on the cover reminded Emmett of the one thing Carlisle had strictly prohibited him to ever bring up.
That his newest brother could fly.
Hell, he had even gotten in trouble for almost crashing into an airplane.
But Carlisle had banned him from bringing it up, both because he didn't trust Emmett wouldn't do something reckless, and also because Alice had told them that Jasper's ability to fly was diminishing.
But Carlisle wasn't here.
And he was bored.
That's how Emmett ended up approaching Jasper with the greatest idea ever.
-Sup bro.- Emmett greeted him with a grin. Jasper looked up at him, narrowing his eyes suspiciously. He was no doubt wondering what all the excitement and giddiness was about.
-Can I help you?
-I'm going into town. Want to come with me?- Jasper frowned at him for a moment before returning to his book.
-No thank you.
Jasper had expected Emmett to leave him be after that, but instead the giant man plopped down right at his side, his huge arm draping over Jasper's shoulder.
Now this was odd.
-Come on dude; it will be fun.
-No.
-Please?
-No.
-Pretty please?
-No, and that's it. Take Edward.
-But he's in one of his moods; I don't want to go out with a dude who will do nothing but dampen the mood.
Jasper ignored him.
Emmett huffed and leaned against him. He kept on pushing against him until he was on top of him, crushing him against the couch. He felt Jasper tense for a moment before relaxing once more.
-Jasper.- Emmett whispered close to his ear, and when he was ignored, he blew air into his hair.
Once again, he went ignored.
Jasper's gaze was fixated on the book, refusing to look at him. Emmett eyed the page for a moment before deeming it too boring and going back to applying more pressure against Jasper's side.
Not even when he put his elbow in Jasper's ribs did he get a reaction from him.
-Dude, seriously? Come on; I'm not asking for much.- Emmett protested as he started to shake him.- I can be very persistent, you know?- He threatened, pressing their foreheads together when Jasper turned to look at him.
-Emmett, what do you really want?- Jasper asked, giving him an exasperated look. He was feeling rather on edge, despite how much he was fighting to keep calm. But Emmett was too close for comfort; the only reason he hadn't lashed out by now was that he was constantly reminding himself that he wasn't in actual danger.
Emmett was just being Emmett.
-You can fly, and I heard there's going to be a lot of fog... With your ability and my brain, we can do something a thousand times more fun than staying here all day.
-I don't think Carlisle would like that.
-He doesn't have to find out.
-But-
-Come on man. You can't tell me it doesn't sound tempting.
Jasper didn't answer; the truth was that he did find it tempting. Part of him missed feeling the wind hit his face, of leaving the ground beneath him and watching the world from above.
Be in the one environment where he didn't have to watch his back.
He had utter control of his surroundings when he was above the world.
Above the battlefield.
So he ended up yielding.
-Fine. Now get off me.- He told him, unable to keep himself from smirking when Emmett's excitement and happiness bled all over him.
Emmett got off him, a wide grin on his face, feeling rather pleased with himself as he watched Jasper leave the book on the table.
-So? What do you have in mind?
-What do you think about becoming a cryptid?- Emmett was quite pleased to see the light smirk his wonderful idea got him.
-What kind?
-A flying one of course. In fact, I don't see why we can't work with something new. What do you think of being a flying Bigfoot?
-Where are we gonna get a Bigfoot costume?
At Emmett's look, Jasper couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.
-Why do you have a Bigfoot costume? No, scratch that, I don't wanna know.
-So? Are you in?
-Sure; why not?
Emmett grinned even more before rushing upstairs to get his masterpiece on.
Jasper went to get a scarf to hide his face. Just in case.
Just in case.
God, he should have known not to go along with Emmett's games, let alone when the length of time he was able to stay in the air had shortened so much over the years.
~~~~~~~~
Emmett was living his best life as a flying Bigfoot.
Of course their take off hadn't been the smoothest, and both of them had ended up crashing into a dumpster, but jumping off the roof of a store had worked rather well for them.
There were still some small hiccups in their flight, and despite Emmett's requests to go faster, Jasper had refused. But hey! They were flying .
And Emmett was finding it to be one of the best things ever, even more so considering he was 100% sure a human had seen their silhouette in the fog.
He couldn't believe he had heeded Carlisle's warning for so long when such a gift was living under the same roof as him. Flying . This time, a flying bigfoot would make history.
Next time-
-Bro, I know I said not too high so our silhouette could be seen, but isn't this a bit too low?
-I can't go higher.- Jasper was doing his best here. He didn't need Emmett to tell him they were too low, of course he knew they were flying dangerously low.
In fact.
It could be his imagination but he couldn't go higher.
No.
It wasn't his imagination.
He couldn't go higher, and attempting to do so was only causing him to drop them lower and lower.
Like a car running low on gas in a cartoon, the hiccups in his flight got worse and worse and-
-We should land now.- Jasper informed Emmett as he tightened his grip on him in an attempt to find his balance in the air once again.
He failed. Miserably.
-A bit more.
-No, we need to land now, or-
-Watch out!- Emmett's shout came too late as a building came out of nowhere from among the fog.
They crashed into a pillar and dropped down onto a roof that had no chance of holding up when their marble-like bodies collided with it. Falling right through the ceiling, they crashed into an altar. Water spilled everywhere, and candles went flying, catching one of the drapes on fire.
-Oh shit!
Both Emmett and Jasper were quick to grab the now-wet tablecloth on the ground and use it to hit the drape in an attempt to extinguish the fire.
But the fire wouldn't go out.
-S' not dyin'!- Jasper cried.
-I noticed! Hit it harder!- Emmett shouted as the fire began spreading even more.
-'M tryin'!
-Try harder!
-What is going on here?!
The sudden shout caused both brothers to snap their heads towards the voice.
And it was at that moment.
As the Father's glare was upon them
That realization dawned on them.
They crashed into a church.
-Run!
Emmett had already climbed out of the window before Jasper could even process his words.
-Come on!
-Stop right there!
Jasper grabbed Emmett's hand and let him pull him out of the church.
Still.
He wasn't expecting the sudden flare of pain on his leg as he touched the ground outside, and he had to bite back the urge to let his legs buckle as he ran after Emmett.
The human's shouting could be heard behind them, growing further and further away.
Running was an absolute nightmare since his jeans kept rubbing against the skin of his injured leg, making the pain even worse, and the more he ran, the more he noticed his leg wasn't the only thing hurting; his arm and left side hurt too. His hands.
It reminded him of how the sun on his skin felt, but rather than just stinging, it actually hurt. Way too sensitive. And it was burning.
By the time they reached the house, Carlisle and Esme were waiting for them on the porch, looking far from happy.
-Where have you two been?- Carlisle questioned them, his arms crossed over his chest, and Jasper could feel his and Esme's disappointment and anger.
-Uh... Running in the woods?
-Father Kinley called; want to try that again? Where were you?- This time Esme was the one who asked, her face dangerous and her voice full of warning.
-We were-
-It was an accident.- Jasper cut in before Emmett could think of another lie. If he had learned anything from his past, it was that avoiding telling the truth, or even just stalling, would only lead to an even worse punishment.
Carlisle and Esme's stern looks fell upon him, and Jasper had to bite back the urge to duck his head in submission.
-I was flyin' and lost my balance. The pillar came outta nowhere, and I crashed into it... The roof couldn't take our weight, an' we fell right through it and onto the altar... There were candles, an' one of 'em must have rolled towards the drapes. We were tryin' to put the fire out when the human appeared...
-And why were you flying?
Jasper didn't answer, but Emmett's costume gave Carlisle and Esme a good idea of what this had all been about. Carlisle pinched the bridge of his nose.
-Upstairs. Now. I want you to go directly to your rooms.- Carlisle's voice was stern as he ordered them inside, and as he watched them walk past him and Esme, he could have sworn he saw Jasper limp for a moment.
Odd.
