Chapter 1: A new world

...

Location: Virginia Beach, VA, US

After recovering from the Russian invasion to the US, many coastal cities had rebuilt or were starting to rebuild. The battle of Lower Manhattan was the last major battle before the Russian withdrawal, but small skirmishes still happened until the remaining forces were killed, captured or retreated.

An attempt at returning to normal was made, with many events starting back up. One such event was the Norfolk Greek Festival. Partygoers from all over the state met there for food, music, dancing and celebration of Greek culture. The streets were fairly crowded, with a healthy number of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen among them, on leave.

A rumbling was felt in the area, but nobody paid attention, due to the rumbling and sound from the loud music. The wind seemed to pick up out of nowhere, and it had an epicenter that was focused on the front of the Greek Orthodox church. In an instant, the sky blackened and a thunderous booming was heard in that direction. What looked like a fire of unnatural origin came from the front of the building, shearing off portions of stone and steel. What formed from that was a large gate, and soon after that, a portal opened up inside.

Shortly after the portal appeared to be at full power, men dressed in what looked like old Roman Army gear came through to the parking lot. They looked all around them, seemingly perplexed at the strange sights. The street lights, the music, the pavement under their feet even seemed alien to them. The partiers started to go back to the celebration, thinking the soldiers before them to be part of the festivities.

That all changed when the soldiers formed up with swords and shields ready, then charged into the crowd. Laughs and cheers were replaced by screams and fear at the sight of steel swords running people through. Some of the people grabbed beer bottles from the trash cans and started throwing them, to no avail. Some people picked up rocks and small sections of barricades, but were still no match for the strong and disciplined soldiers.

One of the soldiers turned his attention to a man pushing his children behind him, to get them away from the killing. He started charging but he fell forward as a gunshot rang out, the bullet going through one side of the helmet but not out the other. Several other gunshots were heard and even more of the Roman clad soldiers dropped. The remaining soldiers formed up as the gun wielding soldiers and Marines on leave also formed up. One of the attacking soldiers readied a bow and let an arrow loose, hitting one of the Marines. He stood back up and returned fire with a 9mm, fatally wounding the soldier that shot the arrow.

The other soldiers and Marines fired under their shields, hitting their shins and feet. When they were destabilized and fell over, some of the partiers ran up and started beating them. The soldiers and Marines had to stop them before they killed them. One soldier grabbed one of them and held his knife to the wounded soldier's neck. "Care to guess what happens if you don't talk?" He spat in a cool but terrifying voice.

"I will die before I reveal anything." He replied in pain.

A Marine looked at who appeared to be their commander and knelt on his chest while he started choking him. "You're the commander, right? If you don't talk, all of your men die and you get to watch!"

The Marine looked at the soldier who still had his knife ready. He nodded and the soldier cut the throat of the one he was holding. "Who wants to go next?"

"Fine. I'll not watch any of my men die of anything but combat." He said with a light cough after the Marine stopped choking him. "I am Adventus Caesennius, Legate under the command of one General Tullius. We were ordered through the Oblivion Gate to conquer a new land."

"Oh boy, did you not choose the right land to try and conquer." The Marine replied with a laugh. "Where is this General Tullius?"

"First, identify yourself."

"Staff Sergeant Damien Knox. United States Marine Corps."

Adventus looked at the soldier who had killed the other one with the knife. "And you, the other Redguard. Who be you?"

"What the hell is a Redguard?"

"Warriors of the land of Hammerfell. How do you not know?"

"You're not from around here. That much is certain. I'm Sergeant Foley, United States Army Rangers."

Knox and Foley stood aside and talked to each other for a moment. "Sarge, what do we do with them?" One of the other Marines asked.

"Are you fuckin dumb? Shoot em."

The Legate tried to stand. "No! You said my men would not die!"

"I made no such promise."

After their encounter, the soldiers and Marines were called back into service and were being readied to go back through the portal to respond. "Gentlemen, I assume you know that we've... extracted some intel from the good Legate. He answers to a General Tullius. They are soldiers of what they call the Imperial Legion." Colonel Marshall started. "In all honesty, the difference in the armor, weapons and supposed vehicles should mean that I could send any one of you with a Hummvee loaded down and you'd be fine. But we would like to show the Imperial Legion just what a mistake they've made. Your orders are to attack, destroy, infiltrate, subvert and harass them into submission or destruction. Now go. Their general is waiting."

Location: The road due south of Whiterun, near Honningbrew Meadery

The Soldiers and Marines loaded onto the gun trucks and headed through the portal. It almost seemed to be teleportation, with how quickly they went through to the other side. Once on the other side, they quickly established a basecamp. People from the nearby meadery came out to look at the strange things coming back through the portal. While they were establishing their post, they started to feel the ground shake. They looked northeast and saw what they could only describe as a giant. Several others came from the front of the city and ran up to the giant's position and started shooting arrows at it, as well as lunging forward to swipe at it with swords and block with shields. Sgt Foley stepped up and aimed his rifle with grenade launcher up at the giant, followed by firing a grenade at its shoulder. The round weakened the giant enough to make it take a knee, while the others finished it off.

A lady approached Foley and stowed her bow. "You have some strange garb. And that weapon of yours, does it cast spells like a staff?"

"Uh, yes. It's called HEDP. That's not the only thing it does." He answered. "Who may you be?"

"I be Aela the Huntress. I am from the Companions. We have a residence at Jorvaskrr mead hall in the city here. May I ask what your purpose is here?"

"I am under orders from my leaders to not tell anyone. Sorry. Anyhow, is there any place nearby that we could procure rations and the like?"

Aela seemed to perk up at the question. "Of course. Enter the city and the first place on the right is the blacksmith. Straight down the path is the market, where meat, fish, fruits and vegetables of all kind can be found. There's also Belethor's, which is the general store right by the market. If you seek a warm bed and strong drink, I would suggest the Bannered Mare inn."

"Well, I thank you for your time and the information. we don't know how long our stay will be, so having provisions is an important thing. One more question. What is the currency here?"

"Septims. Commonly referred to as just Gold. Which is, as the name implies, what the coins are made of."

"Again, thank you. I must return to my troops."

Foley returned to the almost complete basecamp and addressed his soldiers. "Guys, the city right here has food, supplies, and of course, alcohol. Once we get some gold, we can go see what they're all about."

"Sarge, how are we supposed to get gold? That shit's expensive. Like almost two grand per ounce." Cpl Dunn commented.

"The lady I just spoke to says that their currency is gold. Stands to reason, we may have an easier time getting it here than in our world. For now, let's get some-" Foley was interrupted by a loud sound, seemingly due south of their position. "The hell is that?"

"Uhh... looks like a..." Dunn started.

"Ramirez, get that stinger and see if you can hit that thing."

"Yes, sir." Ramirez answered, grabbing the Stinger Missile launcher. He took aim, and when he heard and felt the prompt, he fired the missile.

Location: Helgen.

Several prisoners held by the Legion were in the city of Helgen for their executions. One man went on his knees before the chopping block and decided to get one last quip in. "My ancestors are smiling at me, Imperial. Can you say the same?" He asked, just before the axe fell down.

The next man, a seemingly unknown man, was also queued for execution, even if he wasn't on the list. He also went to his knees before the chopping block. Just as the executioner was raising the axe, a dragon with scales as black as coal dropped down onto the roof of the building next to them, interrupting the execution. The Dragon reared up and was about to breathe fire, but was also interrupted when an FIM-92 missile slammed into it, ripping open its shoulder and causing it to spew its foul blood all over.

The missile knocked the dragon from his perch. In the confusion, the remaining prisoners fled. The dragon spoke angrily in an ancient and powerful tongue. He spat fire all around, seemingly to cover his retreat. The imperial soldiers started shooting arrows at the dragon, to little effect.

Once almost everything in town was on fire, the dragon took off to mend his wounds. The prisoners would make their escapes and would flee to the countryside.

"Haha, got his ass!" Dunn cheered.

"Good shot, Ramirez." Foley said.

"I guess fire breathing dragons don't fare so well against heatseeking weapons." Ramirez laughed.

Foley looked up and saw the dragon flying away. "Dammit, I thought you killed him. Oh well, maybe next time."

"Yeah, see how he likes a Javelin next time." Dunn laughed.
