Home - Blue October
Teddy has a bad feeling about a lot of things lately. Amelia Shepherd's sudden disappearance and Link groveling around the hospital makes Teddy a little crazy. Not that she thinks Owen is betraying her, because he hasn't. She doesn't even think that Owen suspects anything, which makes her happy, but… there is still this fear that Amelia's baby is Owen and Owen will pick Amelia. That feeling will never go away, she knows this. She just keeps burying it deep down. But today? Today is…. Today, the feeling is heavier. It weighs on her.
She runs outside to catch her breath. To feel the snow. To let the cold air fill her lungs.
"Hey" She hears behind her. She smiles before she turns around. Despite any anxiety or fear she's feeling, she will always melt at the sound of his voice.
She turns around and the heavy feeling lightens up a little. His smile. Standing behind her holding up two cocoas. He hands one to her.
"How did you find me?" She asks, little smile playing on her face.
"I couldn't find you inside so it only means you're out here. It's snowing."
She just nods and smile. Her sneakers kicking the snow around.
"You okay?" Owen asks, stepping closer to her.
She looks up at him, with a sad smile. "Yeah… just a lot on my mind"
Owen pulls her into him and wraps his free hand around her. "Want to talk about it?"
His warmth. The way he presses his cheek against her. HIs sturdy arm around her.
"It's nothing. It's just busy. I'm trying to quiet my mind. You know how it is. With the trauma we see everyday. She's… She was just protecting her wife and she ends up running her over… it's just… things in my head. Just swirling."
Owen pulls away and tilts her chin and looks into her eyes. He wipes the snowflakes on her cheek and leans in for a kiss.
"I love how much you care. But that was a freak accident. Things like this happen. But she's okay now. They're going to be okay." He always knows what say. Even when he's the one thing that drives him crazy and anxious, he's also the same person who can calm her down. It's not his fault she's anxious. Not really. It's just her mind betraying her. She just gives into his hug.
"It's a scary world out there, Owen."
He chuckles "I know, but I got you."
She pulls away and gives him a kiss. "I love you"
There was something romantic about the snow. The way it falls around them. The way his free arm is wrapped around her waist. Hand on the small of her back, pressing her close to him. She pulls away eventually. The smell of chocolate from their breath.
The snow in the desert? He did that for her. Whenever she doubts Owen's love for her, she just goes back to that thought. He made it snow in the desert. It was for her. It had always been for her.
She hasn't seen him for the rest of the day. She's been in the OR saving lives, distracting herself. Her anxiety is a little down, but it's there. Lingering. She asks Maggie Pierce is she's just crazy, and Maggie says she's not and she's terrified but she tries to calm down. It will be okay. She has nothing to worry about. She will be fine. It's fine. She will be okay.
Her spiral was interrupted by her phone. She smiles as she reads "Teddy! Snow day! Want to go sledding?"
She chuckles and responds. "Yes! :)"
She can picture him looking at his phone, smiling like a little kid. She also feels giddy.
She gets home and he's already there waiting for her. He already unearthed the sled from the garage.
"The kids are still with mom. I figured we can make it a little date night." He says when she walks in. She puts her bag down and walks to him and wraps her arms around him. He holds her close and gives her a little squeeze. "We can go to the park, I'm sure it's empty by now. Maybe grab some pizza after?"
Teddy just looks at him and leans in for a kiss. He holds her close and presses her against the wall. "Let me go change." She says when he pulls away.
"Hurry"
She laughs as she wiggles out of his embrace.
Even with all her fears and anxiety eating at her every day, she still feels grateful that Owen is there. That she is with her best friend. That they're building a home together.
"Okay, this is a little too steep" She says.
"You scared?" Owen challenges her.
"Oh you did not just say that. I'm not scared."
"Well let's go then."
"How did you even find this place?" Teddy asks looking around. They were alone in the middle of the park. In the calm after the blizzard. It was night time and the streetlights and the moonlight illuminated them.
"I've been going to this spot to sled since I was a kid." He says beaming at her "And when the kids are a little bigger we're gonna take them here every snow day."
"No our kids are not going down this hill. It's too steep."
"No it's not. It's fine. I'm fine. Megan turned out fine."
"No."
"Okay maybe not in the next eight years but… eventually." He says "Now get on the sled. I promise. It's not that steep. And it's the most fun."
"Fine"
She trusts him. She she gets on the sled. And he gets behind her. And he has his arms around her. And she feels safe. She leans back against him and he gets close to her ear.
"Ready?" His warm breath against her ear.
"Yeah"
And off the went down the hill. And they laugh and they have fun and she feels okay. She feels safe. And for that brief moment she forgets about her doubts and her fear. They get to the bottom of the hill and they laugh. And they laugh until they couldn't breath. They roll off the sled and they lay in the snow for a while, laughing, hear head on his chest. He rolls her over and gives her a kiss.
"Wasn't that fun" He says.
"So much." She says, wriggling from under him and gets up "Let's do it again. Race ya."
He stays in the snow, laughing. She knows he's going to let her win. But that's okay. She needed this win.
They went down the hill a few times. Until they were both tired, mostly from laughing. She can't remember the last time she had that much fun.
They pick up the kids from his mom's house and then picked up some pizza on the way home. Owen decided to get two pies. Teddy tells him it's excessive but Owen pointed out how she mentioned she's starving and when she says she's starving it usually means she can finish an entire pie by herself.
They put the kids to bed, thankful that they didn't really wake up during their little trip from their Evelyn's house to their own little cribs. They change into cozier clothes and they turn on the fireplace and put on a record. Owen grabs them some beers and they sit by the fire and eat. As much as they love their kids, it's nice to have to have some alone time.
"Thank you" Teddy says "For today."
"Did it help? With the swirling?"
"So much."
"Whatever you're swirling about, I'm here, you know that right?"
"I know. Thank you." She smiles at him, reaching for his face and caressing it gently. She can feel him admiring her. And it feels good that she finally has him. That she's finally the one he's looking at like that, with such love and adoration in his eyes. "So you used to go there a lot? Did you used to bring girls up there?" She teases
"Not really. I haven't been there since high school." He laughs.
"Why not?"
"I don't know. I just.. Beth, Cristina, and Amelia…. They're not like you."
"What? Childish and —"
"Fun." He says laughing "I don't know why or how you bring out my playful side. I cannot even remember what I did for fun before you."
"That's sad…"
"Right?" He says "Since we got together, we've been biking, hiking, playing catch…. I just… thinking about it now, I don't remember what I used to do when I wasn't at the hospital"
"Me neither to be honest. I also can't remember the last time I ate this much pizza and drank this much beer"
"This is so much better."
"I agree." She says "Can we bring the kids tomorrow? Not to that very steep hill… just… maybe the bottom of the hill or something" She laughs. She's going to get them to love the snow as much as she does. They're going to start their kids young
"Sure. No steep hill. Not until they're at least 8" he promised. Teddy just smiles. She leans in for a kiss. She doesn't care if she tastes like pizza. This is love. This is true love.
It's both their day off and Teddy is already excited about going back to the park, but this time with the kids. She bundles Allison up in a cute little parka. Leo is also all bundled, his curls poking from under his beanie.
"Owen, they are too cute." She says squeezing Allison a little tighter. "My little caterpillar."
Teddy puts Allison down on the snow, and the little girl curiously looks at the snow and then her mother. She looks at her brother, who was definitely enjoying the cold ice. Her little lips curve into a pout but she carefully touches the cold surface. She looks at her mom again and her dad and her lips quiver and she starts to cry.
Teddy stands by Owen and sighs "She hates it. My own daughter hates snow."
"Teddy" Owen says with a chuckle "She's a baby. She doesn't hate snow. She just doesn't know. Let her figure it out."
Leo on the other hand rolls around and then he gets up and tries to hold the snow between his covered little hands.
Owen and Teddy just watch their kids carefully. Owen takes a few pictures, he's been obsessively doing that lately because he thinks they're both growing up too fast and he needs to document their every move. Teddy finds it adorable.
Leo instinctively makes tiny little snow balls and hands it to his crying little sister. Allison stops crying and grabs whatever Leo was offering her and she looks at it curiously.
"Ever wonder what's going on in her mind right now?" Teddy asks Owen
"She's thinking why we just left her sitting in a pile of powdery ice"
"Our daughter hates snow. We have to give her up" Teddy jokes
"I'll drive us to the nearest fire station" He says, deadpan.
Teddy laughs "We're awful." She says as she picks Allison back up. Allison just cries again and wiggles and reaches for the snow.
"Okay see maybe she likes the snow." Owen says
Teddy puts her back down again and she babbles at Leo, who just just hands her more snow.
"Cute" Teddy says.
Owen crouches down and makes a snowball and hands it to Allison. Teddy tears up as Allison's eyes sparkle in amazement as she takes the snowball from Owen. He makes another one for Leo. Leo stares at it for a second before taking a bite.
"Oh no no no" Owen says chuckling. Teddy just laughs.
She finds it amusing watching the kids and him. He really wanted this. This is all he wanted in life. It was picture perfect. Owen. The kids. The snow. She takes a picture. Owen looks happy, truly happy. She's completely in love.
She knows whatever happens with Amelia's baby, they'll figure it out. If the baby is his then they'll figure it out. They love each other and they'll figure it out. She has to trust that he loves her and he will always choose her, their family from now on. There is no one standing in their way. Not anymore. They will be okay.
imagine i rewrite season 16 with random one shots and we wont have to deal with stupid characters. #justiceforteddy
