Paper Rings - Taylor Swift

Owen and Teddy sit on their couch just relaxing after a long day. Leo curled up right next to Teddy, fast asleep, but they want to spend a little time with the kids before putting them to bed. Teddy's hand rests protectively on her son. Allison is content and asleep and drooling on Owen's chest. His on hand on the baby's small back, rubbing it.

"Teddy, we're engaged" Owen says, smiling. His free hand reaching out for hers and gives it a squeeze. Earlier that night, before heading home he asked her to marry him.

Teddy intertwines her fingers with his. "We are. Owen Hunt proposed to me."

He kisses the back of her hand. "Did you imagine this too?" He asks, chuckling.

"I didn't, and definitely not with your mother's ring. This is… beyond anything I could ever imagine."

"I have."

She laughs. "No you haven't."

"I swear, I have. I imagined something more romantic than doing it in an on call room, but I just wanted to do it right then and there."

"You know it doesn't matter where you do it. I'm not one of those people who needed a grand proposal"

"I know you'd hate that."

"You've been carrying the ring in your pocket for months?"

"Yeah. I wanted to do it right away but I was afraid it wouldn't be enough. There's so much to make up for"

"You know that's not important to me right? I want to be with you, yes, and we have our family and I'm happy but I don't want you to do it out of obligation"

"No, it's not that. It's just… it's something that should have happened a long time ago.'

"The on-call room was perfect, Owen. Everything is perfect. It probably wouldn't be as special if it happened a long time ago." She leans her head against his shoulder and plays with Allison's little fingers. "This is perfect."

Owen leaves a kiss on top of her head, breathing her in. "It is."

"Will you tell me the story? Of the ring?" She says sleepily. It's late but she's cherishing every moment of the day. "So it's your mom's?"

"Yeah it's my mom's. Also my grandma's. It's been in the family for a long time."

Teddy sighs jokingly "That's a lot of pressure. I'm not really the… fancy ring type."

"It looks good on your finger."

"And your mom gave it to you?"

"Yeah. My dad's mom gave it to my dad to give to her. It's a Hunt thing."

"And your mom picked me? Out of all your wives."

"She hasn't been crazy about the others" He says with a laugh

"But it's a Hunt thing."

"I don't get to decide who my mom gives her possession too." He says smiling at Teddy. "All I know is when Allison was born she gave me the ring and told me to propose to you and told me the story of the ring. She also said she's been waiting for this moment."

"Would you have proposed if she didn't give you the ring?"

"Yeah, of course. I would just need to buy a ring"

"I'm sure you have an engagement ring guy by now"

He laughs "Thank god my mom gave me a ring. It would be embarrassing to call my ring guy again"

Teddy smiles and sighs "Owen, is this real?"

"Yes. Are you changing your mind again."

"No. Not even a little bit. I love you. I want to marry you."

"Me too."

"Owen, if you were gonna propose though, when you imagined it, how would you do it?"

"Backyard. String lights. dinner. Something romantic like that."

Teddy smiles. "I like the on-call room better"

"Bye ring" Teddy said pouting as Owen locks the heirloom ring in a safe in their house.

Owen just laughs "It's still yours… You just need to.. not wear it daily. Remember when you had to sift through—"

"Don't say it, Owen. Let's just forget this happened."

Owen doubles in laughter. "I just.. I can't. This is a good story. Come on."

"It's good now because Leo is fine! It could have been bad!"

Owen chuckles and leans in to kiss her on the forehead. "But it wasn't. You have to laugh. It's hilarious"

"Mom is not going to find it hilarious. Please do not tell her."

Owen just laughs again "It's so good. How are you not laughing!"

"Because I almost hurt Leo! He could have choked!"

"Babe, he's a kid. They put things in their mouth. Shit happens. He's fine."

Teddy just buries her face in his neck "I'm a terrible mother"

"You're doing your best"

"Am I?"

"Yes."

She sighs and finds Leo. She gives him extra love and snuggles because she truly felt awful. He seems to be find and has bounced back.

"I'm sorry baby" She whispers in his ear.

"Teddy. He's fine. See? He's back to his normal self!"

"I—I've never been around children before. I just dont know what to do with them. How do you know what to do? And what to say? Don't get me wrong I love them both so much, but I've been failing at being a mother. At being… a… fiancé…" Teddy says, freaking out.

"Babe you didn't do anything wrong. Children put anything in their mouth. It's fine."

"Don't tell your mother."

"I won't. But she won't judge you I promise."

"Don't tell Megan either. She's already salty she didn't get the heirloom ring"

"She doesn't care. She already has her own ring"

"She's just gonna laugh" She says. Owen laughs again. "Owen it's not funny" She tries to hold her laughter as she holds Leo close to her "Okay fine it's funny now, but it could have been bad!"

"I know, I know. You're right. It could have been bad."

Teddy pulls away and looks at Leo. "Leo." Leo snaps his head and looks at his mom when he hears his name "I'm really, really sorry."

"Weddy" He just responds and puts his little hands on her her face.

Teddy just looks at Owen with her big teary eyes. "I love him. And he swallowed my ring."

Owen smiles, heart melting. "He loves you too. And he's fine. And one day when everything calms down, maybe we'll even let you wear the ring on the days you're not working"

"I love the ring, Owen."

"I know. And it's yours now. It's all yours."

"I'm sorry about today."

"Teddy. It's okay. It's really okay."

"I'm so glad we finally found the time to celebrate you two and your engagement" Evelyn says as she puts the food on the table. She sits by Teddy and holds her hand "The ring looks good on you, Teds" She says.

Teddy smiles politely and looks at Owen, who is stifling a laugh, "Thank you. For the ring. It's… beautiful."

"DOn't you just wish…" Evelyn starts with a mischievous smile "Leo could tell us how good it tastes"

Teddy fake pouts and laughs in defeat "Owen!"

Owen couldn't help but laugh "I didn't tell her! I did tell Megan though. It was just too funny."

Teddy hides I her hands embarrassed. "I'm so sorry."

"Teddy, sweetheart. The ring is yours. I don't care. It's funny."

"You wore that thing through a war. Owen grandma wore it through a depression. I've had it for a week and my son swallows it. I'm—I don't deserve that ring."

"You are still a great mother, Theodora. And you deserve that ring. You've always been a part of my family for decades. I secretly have been saving that ring for you. Glad you two decided to get together."

"You're not mad? About the ring"

Evelyn laughs. "Oh honey, it could have been so much worse."

"Told you." Owen says

"Owen once swallowed one of those little part of some action figure. I don't even know how it happened. I don't think I ever told you that" She says pointing at Owen "He was choking for a while, I had to give him the Heimlich. Oh, I felt awful. But these things happen."

"I did not know that." Owen says

"I never told anyone. Not even your dad." Evelyn says shrugging "My point is, it's fine. Leo's fine. The ring looks good on you."

"I'm not allowed the wear it. Only on special occasions" Teddy says bashfully.

"Well, yeah that's probably for the best. You're a surgeon. You're an overworked mom with two very small kids."

"Owen got me this necklace instead." She says showing off her necklace with the initials around her neck.

Evelyn leans in and looks at them with a little smile. "Well, isn't that special?" She says "I'm really happy that you're together, Teddy. I don't think I've expressed that to you both."

Teddy smiles, feeling happy and grateful and welcome to the Hunt family. She's always felt like a part of the family, but now it's official. She feels giddy and excited. She can't wait to marry her best friend.

"Now eat before the food gets cold." Evelyn says.

Teddy stands in the middle of the dance floor. Owen's arms around her waist. Her arms around his neck. He holds her close as they sway to the music. Here, There, Everywhere by the Beatles is playing.

"We're married." Owen whispers in her ear.

It's a wedding she didn't imagine she'd every have. In font of their friends and families and colleagues. It was perfect.

There were twinkly lights all over. Her dress, long and strapless. Him in his tuxedo, looking as dapper as ever.

"I'm married to Owen Hunt" She says back. Pulling away so she can look into his eyes.

"This… This is perfect. You.. You are perfect."

"Best wedding you've had?"

"Oh hands down. You?"

"Naturally" She says with a laugh.

"The ring really does look beautiful on you."

"Heirloom ring or not, Owen…this is all perfect. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you"

"I know."

"I'm glad you flew to Germany."

"I'm glad I knocked you up"

They share a laugh. She leans her forehead against his as they sway to the music.

"Nice song. Great pick." He says with a chuckle

"It's a skill."

"You're Mrs. Hunt now." He whispers.

"Finally" She responds.
