Honeybee - The Head and The Heart
It was a long day for the two of them. Between work and the kids, he knows for sure that they are both exhausted. Most days they just try to get through it. Today was definitely one of those days. Today was chaotic. Allison is crying about something and he watches as Teddy patiently trying to understand why their daughter is crying. He stands in the middle of the living room just unsure of what to do with himself. He could help Teddy make out what their daughter is saying or trying to say, or he can give them space and not crowd the cranky toddler. So he decides to just stay where he was and wait until he's needed. Leo was nearby, quietly minding his own business unbothered that his sister was wailing and babbling incoherently.
"Teddy do you need—"
"Ugh," Teddy just sighs "No. It's fine."
He understands that she's not having the best day either. It's fine. They all have bad days. So he shuts up and sits on the couch, keeping an eye on Leo and the situation in the kitchen. Teddy places Allison on the kitchen counter and levels with her. He watches as she checks her forehead, her neck, her throat.
"I can get the thermo—"
"She doesn't have a fever." He knows Teddy is getting frustrated, but he lets her be. There's nothing he can do that will alleviate the situation. He just observes from afar.
This is something they built. This family. This home. He knows they're far from perfect when it comes to parenting. But they're doing their best.
He has dreamed of a family since he can remember. He's dreamed of a family with her since...longer than anyone else would have thought. Truth was, he always had a crush on Teddy when they were still in the army. He imagined all these different scenarios of them getting together, the way it would feel to hold her and love her and kiss her. Some days his mind would go as far as imagining a family with her. He doesn't want to admit it most of the time, but it had always been Teddy. He felt that he was cheating on Beth, and then Cristina, even with Amelia because Teddy was always in the back of his mind. What would've happened if they got together much earlier in life, before he got into his messy life. Cristina and Amelia didn't want children but he can't help but go back to daydreams about having little Teddy and Owens running around.
So fast forward to years and years later, here they are. Finally on the same page. Two kids. House. A family. They've been more in love than they've ever had. It's a lot of work. They're still working on it. But they made it. They're here.
He thinks about her. About Iraq. About gazing into the stars. She remembers talking about hamburgers, sometimes he remembers more. They talked about life and the things they want when they come home. He talked about having children. She said she wants them too if she ever found the right guy. He thought he could be her right guy but he never thought she loved him then. He wasn't too good at noticing signs that maybe she was also into him, so as a defense, he talked about Beth and having a family with Beth. But in his head, he had these little blonde children with Teddy running around. He vividly remembers Teddy chuckling, interrupting his daydreams, and she'd say 'maybe my kids and your kids will grow up together and we'd vacation together and stuff like that', but deep in his mind he really hoped they'd have kids together. He later found out that she had the same daydreams. It's always been her. It's always been them.
Now he's taken out of the reverie with another wail and Teddy trying to negotiate with the screaming toddler. She eventually gives up and holds Allison closer, who just nuzzles into her neck.
"Did you just wanna snuggle?" Teddy asks, and Allison just nuzzles closer and whimpers. They walk back to living room and walks closer to him. "We have Miss Crankypants tonight" She says to him softly.
He couldn't help but rub Allison's small back as the toddler slowly calms down. "She just wants to snuggle." He checks her forehead too to double check that she wasn't warm or anything. She seemed fine, so he pulls Teddy close and leaves a kiss on her head to alleviate her frustration with their daughter.
He and Teddy had a complicated history. There were doubts and pain and hurt and trauma, but under all that they have this solid foundation of friendship. They have fought and there had been tears and cold shoulders, but they know they've loved each other forever—platonic or not. They cared for each other. And everything boils down to their strong friendship.
From under the stars, sharing their hopes and dreams to actually turning it into reality. No one said it was going to be easy but they eventually found their way to each other.
"Mommy, look!" Leo proudly showing her his little lego tower he's been working on. Teddy looks over and gives him a soft smile.
"Good job, Leo." Teddy says to Leo. She looks back at him with a more serious gaze. "Can we talk? Later? After we put the kids down?"
He doesn't know why this makes him nervous. The tone. The gravity of it all. He can't think of anything they'd need to talk about with such urgency, although sure, there are still a lot to talk about especially when it comes to their situation. So he swallows hard because he's nervous. But he just nods.
"Yeah. Of course. Everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. Don't worry. I'll get them ready for bed—"
"Sure. Uh. Deal with Allison. I'll put Leo down."
"Okay. Don't forget to read the llama book. He's really into that one, but I mean ask him, but he's really into that one right now"
"I got it. Don't worry."
"And he likes sounding out the words so—"
"Teddy" He says, smiling. "I got it."
"Okay." She smiles apologetically. She pats his chest with her free hand and takes Allison to her bedroom.
"C'mon, Leo. Let's get ready for bed."
"I want mommy" Leo says pouting, as he continues to build his lego tower.
"I know, but it's my turn tonight and tomorrow it'll be mommy's turn."
"Okay" He sighs and skitters to his bedroom.
Owen stops by Allison's door to listen in. He hears Teddy reading animatedly and Allison finally giggling.
He knows Teddy has her fears and reservations about being a mother. She shared with him in the past that she's afraid it's not going to come naturally. She was afraid that all she knows is giving their baby orders and not actually knowing how to talk to them. But what he actually learned is Teddy was a natural at it. She knew exactly what to do and say. There's no handbook or manual on how to do this but the two of them seem to be managing.
He loved having a little sister. He somehow knew how to be a parent just be parenting his little sister especially after they lost their dad. Teddy was an only child. She didn't really know what to do with children—at least that's what she's confided in him. But she still wanted kids. At least two, he remembers her saying decades ago under the stars in the desert. At least two, maybe three. Because they need a buddy. It's awfully lonely to be an only child, she said. She also wished for at least a girl because she 'wouldn't know what to do with a boy'. And here they are, she seems to be getting along just fine with Leo. She knew exactly what to do with him. She loves him more than she ever thought she could. She got herself in this messy situation and somehow Leo is more attached to her than any other adult in Leo's life.
He tucks Leo into his new bed and he sits at the edge of his bed.
"So what are we reading tonight"
"Llama!" Leo exclaims pointing at the book on his nightstand.
"Okay." He says, settling in "Llama, llama, red pajama"
He still can't believe it most days that he gets to live the life he's always dreamt. He didn't think it was written in the stars for him—to ever get whatever he wanted. Turns out he was just looking at the wrong place. It-she-has always been in front of him all those years—those decades. But they're here. He's here, reading a children's bedtime story to their son. She's across the hall reading one to their daughter. And they have forever ahead of them, with many more possibilities.
"Dad—" Leo pipes in, interrupting the bedtime story he's mindlessly reading to their son.
"Yeah?"
"I don't know where Wally is."
Wally. The stuffed walrus. It had to be somewhere around the house. He looks around the bedroom and it wasn't anywhere in sight.
"If you promise to stay in bed, I'll go back out there and try to find him okay? But you can't move. You're already tucked in."
"Okay, promise" Leo says obediently, staying put in his bed.
Owen gets up and scours around the living room. Toys and children's books scattered all over. It was a chaotic night, they'll clean up once the kids are asleep. Wally catches his eye on the dining table. As he approaches it he notices a pile of papers by Wally and Teddy's bag. He didn't mean to invade her privacy but it was just out of curiosity. He takes the pile of papers and he looks over it confusedly and reads it as he heads back to Leo's room. It could be what she wanted to talk about. By the time he reaches Leo's room, he was already fast asleep. He tucks Wally in his arms and Leo snuggles it closer to him with a soft smile on his face.
He goes through the page, re-reading it again as he walks across the hall to Allison's room. She opens the door as he approaches with a soft smile on her face. He holds to papers up to her in bewilderment. He watches her with adoration as her smile gets bigger and cocks her head to the side.
"Really?"
"Yeah" She says softly, closing Allison's door behind her. "What some tea? We can talk."
"Okay"
"Okay"
He looks over it again as they make their way to the kitchen.
"So?" He asks excitedly.
"I want to adopt him. I mean. Right? I love him, Owen. I love him. He's my child too and I already had a conversation about it with a lawyer but obviously it's a little more complicated. She think it's not going to be easy, since obviously we're not married. And—"
"So then let's get married."
"What?"
"Let's get married. We're going to get married anyway…eventually, right?"
"Okay. Yeah."
"You still want to marry me, right?"
"Do you still want to marry me?"
"Of course." Owen says, chuckling. "I've always wanted to marry you. You'll always be the one, Teddy."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
"We'll get married?"
"Yeah."
"And I'll officially adopt Leo and we can be a real family. Like, a real, real one."
"Will you marry me, Theodora Grace Altman"
She laughs as she hands him his tea. "Yeah, of course I'll marry you." She smiles "And this is not just because of the whole adoption thing. I want to marry you because I love you. I'm in love with you. And you're also always been the one."
"Okay, then. That settles that" He says, sipping his tea.
"Okay. And can we do it right this time? The wedding?"
"Of course. We'll take time to plan it. Do tastings and sampling and all the fun stuff."
"Yeah. I promise I'll be more present this time."
He looks at her lovingly. "Thank you" He says "For loving Leo too."
"I love you. And I love our family. And I mean that with my whole heart'
Sometimes long and horrible and chaotic days end with the sweetest notes. They both made the right choice, healing and learning and loving and choosing each other. It's a lot of work but they do it for their family. For their kids. To show them love and that people can make mistakes and learn from them and heal from them.
He leans in and gives her a kiss. His—their—dreams are coming true. His whole world has always been in front of him. They'll eventually officially be a family. The Altman-Hunts. He knows there will be more surprises along the way. Maybe a pet, maybe another kid, maybe… maybe… But right now this will do.
