She - Elvis Costello

It was her eyes that caught his attention first. They were green and they are attention grabbing and they glistened in the desert sun. He remembers standing far away enough to observe her. She had her head down, and just behind him someone yells out "Altman!". Her head snaps up, her gaze over his shoulder, those green twinkling eyes. It piqued his interest. Who is this person. What is she doing here. He was in a complete daze. Any thought he had prior to seeing her eyes were all gone. He watches as she walks by and makes her way behind him to the person who called for her.

"Teddy Altman. She's one of our new battalion surgeons." Dan Mooney says, elbowing him jokingly.

"What?" He asks, confused. Unsure of what Dan was saying to him.

"The person you're drooling over. Her name is Teddy Altman. She will be working with us. As a surgeon. She is a surgeon. Who we will be working very closely with. Was that clear or do I need to explain it slower"

"Shut up" He says chuckling "I have Beth"

"I don't know why you're bringing up your fiancé right now. All I'm saying is there's a new person in the team" He was smirking. Owen knew he had been caught zoning out on this Teddy Altman person. "Come on, let me introduce you"

"Okay, I guess" He tries to act nonchalant.

But before they could get to her Sergeant Teller comes in with a coronary dissection—it was a coronary dissection. doesn't matter what Teddy says about this if you ask her side of this story, okay, maybe it was a CABG—point is, they didn't meet formally until after surgery, when he got to witness this beautiful, skillful, badass woman perform surgery. She was bossy and cool and funny and so many wonderful things and he just knew she will be someone special in his life.

He knew then. He's even more sure now. He looks up and watches her. He can't help it, but a small smile creeps on his face. This is real. This is happening. This feels different. This feels…right. She smiles back at him and time moves slowly. He's done this before. Twice before. But it never felt like this. This feels so much different.

He had no regrets or qualms or any second thought about inviting her to move to Seattle and work with him. They were a great team. She's a great surgeon, a great teacher. He brought her in to mentor Cristina, sure, but he mostly wanted to have her nearby. She was his comfort blanket. So when she said "yes! Yes! I'd love to!" Owen felt excited. More excitement, more emotion than he's ever felt….ever. He looked forward to seeing his best friend and having her nearby. On her first day she found him in the ER after her meeting the chief and gave him a gentle shove—something she loved doing. 'The chief offered me a temporary contract to feel it out!' She beamed at him. Excited about the beginning of a new chapter for her. He smiles at her and shoves her back 'You'll love it'. His pager beeps and he glances at it and smiles. 'Ready for your first trauma?' 'Oh fuck yeah'

Seeing Teddy in action was a treat. He'll never get tired watching her. He watches from afar and lets her run the trauma. She looks up at him, those eyes, they get him every time. She smiles in appreciation. He nods and lets her work.

He wants to give her the world. Give her everything she could ask for. He owes her that much. She was the one who stood by him through everything. That outweighs any ugly thing in this world. She is his person. His one and only.

He looks at her as she gets closer to him. She looks immaculate in her white dress. It was simple and elegant, just like her. Her hair perfectly framing her face.

When he went to Germany, in her kitchen, he stares into her eyes. Her eyes were confused and searching for answers. 'So for the first time... you and me.." She blinks at him. That hopeful gaze. That soft smile. He'll carry that with him. 'There's nothing standing in our way'. Okay, that wasn't completely true, turns out, but that doesn't matter because they got through it. Germany was a big part of their story. It was important and they got through it.

He is the luckiest man on Earth. To have her. To hold her. To get to know her.

No one else in this room mattered. It was just him and her. Their eyes staring into each other.

She gets to him and she excitedly grabs his hands and gives them a squeeze.

"Hi" She says giddily.

"Hey" He says.

He has imagined this day a million times, a million different ways. There are so many things he wants to say. Things he vows to her. But there are never enough words to describe how he feels.

She squeezes his hand, bringing him back to the present. He clears his throat, thinking about the vows he wrote, neatly folded in his pocket. He suddenly doesn't want to say those words because the words he wrote were rehearsed. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But he wants it to be real and genuine. Because this is real. This is genuine. This is it.

"Teddy" he starts and lets out a chuckle. He couldn't help it. She was beaming giddily in front of him, looking immaculate. And he cannot collect his thoughts because she is so goddamn beautiful. She's gone through so much and has dealt with so much, but they're here. They made it. "Teddy…" He clears his throat to mask the emotions he's feeling. It's indescribable. Something he's never felt since… probably since their daughter was born. It was and overwhelming joy. But he's not going to cry. Not before Teddy, who was happy and very ecstatic, but will be caught dead crying in front of people. "When we first got together, it was snowy and perfect and we were in bed and I said 'isn't that what they say, you should marry your best friend'… and you gave me that look. That look you always give me when you're ready to banter. I've seen that look and I've seen that face countless of times, because you have been my best friend for a many years, and I'm sure many lifetimes before. And you responded so wittily and I panicked and that derailed everything. Okay, that's not a good way to start my vows, I promise I wrote a really good and well-written one. I don't know why I'm going off-book" He's sweating now, but whatever because she just squeezes his hand again and urges him to continue. "I panicked then because I meant it and it meant a lot. And I knew I was just getting out of a marriage but I also knew I wanted to marry you and be with you for the rest of my life. And I don't want to go back to the past and re-live all my detours, but now that we're here, you're here by my side, I vow to love you and spend every single day of my life giving you everything and more. I vow to make up for all the years I wasted, or rather, writing other stories, but all those experiences led me here. To this. With you. With our kids. And despite all the detours, we wouldn't be us without any of the hoops we had to jump through. It made us stronger. It made us better. It made us appreciate each other more. So Theodora Grace Altman, we're here. We're at the beginning of another chapter. A new one and an infinity more to go. And I vow to love you and hold you and be there for you in this lifetime and the next and the next one after that."

He stares into his eyes, green and glistening. Lost in them. Whatever he said may have been the cheesiest words he's ever uttered but he meant every single word. He will live by every single word.

She is holding into his hands tightly. And she lets out a little laugh. He knows she gets a little shy especially with everyone watching. He's glad they're doing this in front of everyone they know.

"Owen" She starts, clearing her throat just like him, and blinking away the tear threatening to fall. "I also wrote something but if you were brave enough to go off-book, I guess I can be too." She chuckles and scrunches her nose in that cute little way she does "And I'm hoping to keep this short because there are a million things I want to say and promise to you but I wouldn't know how to articulate them, but I do know, and I do promise that I will show you and make you feel every single one of them. You have already given me the dream. We've seen each other in our best and in our worst. And you were right, people say that you should marry your best friend. A best friend, its true definition, I think, is that friend you value the most. The person you first call. The first person you tell your good news to. A person who makes you feel at home. A person who will stick by you when you are worse than your worst, and you're better than your best. So yes, spend the rest of your life with that person. Build a family with that person. You are my best friend, Owen Hunt. And I vow, to you and our kids, to give you all my unconditional and everlasting love. To make you feel how good and happy you make me feel. It doesn't matter what comes our way now, I know we'll get through it together. You make the impossible happen. You make it snow in the desert. You get me snow for Christmas. You make me feel like I'm worthy of good and happy things. I love you. I cherish you. I promise to love you for better or for worse."

He smiles at her. Looking at her adoringly. Forgetting that about seventy five of their close friends and family are staring at them. It's just the two of them in the room.

He vaguely hears "you may now kiss the bride" because he was too consumed by her. By her eyes. By her smile. He pulls her in and cradles her face and kisses her for the first time as his wife.

She pulls away and laughs. "You imagined this too?" She whispers, leaning her forehead against his, the tips of their noses touching tenderly.

"I imagined this too" He whispers back.
